Tea Room the Ninth: I love rock and roll, put another dime in the juke box baby

1000 replies

MadBadandDangerousToKnow · 16/06/2009 22:20

Welome to the ninth incarnation of the tea room. It's been a long and eventful road, from a tea room overlooking a cathedral garden to a beachside cafe, with a diversion via a yurt. Now - voila - we are in a music lounge. We cater for all tastes and, as this is a tea room of requirement, it manages simultaneously to be many things at once. For some, it is a 70s glam rock disco with a cool boho edge - glitter balls, smoke machine and much wearing of platform shoes and eyeliner. For others, a jazz bar where mellow music is played as cocktails are served. For still others, it's a concert performance of Spem In Allium. We still have a garden, with shady parasols for the summer, and a menagerie of pets. Our membership is international.

The tea room has few rules. Everyone is welcome. But anyone visiting with the sole intention of causing hurt or shouting abuse will be ejected by Mellors, the multi-talented gardener-handyman who (it turns out) is also a guitar wizard and rock god.

Please come in.

Evening all.

Still v. busy at work.

Still busy at home.

MJ and I have been hacking away for the last 3 or 4 days - mine seems to be getting worse. Dh now has decided that he has 'flu' and has sneezed twice this evening and cleared his throat twice. Apparently it lets him off doing anything!!!!

Still no job. And no income support either.

I don't know what I have to do to get him a job!

CMot - sorry you're feeling poorly. A friend works in the health service - she and 15 colleagues were off work ill - got given tamiflu but had tests too - tests indicated that they were negative... a lot of it is going around.

AMBER Yaaayy!!!!

daisy99divine · 05/08/2009 21:44

oh Mistle, sorry to hear about your crap ill DH and his lack of job. It must be depressing and wearing - how are the general finances holding up? Is that why you are having to work extra hard?

UniS I am impressed by your energy. I am feeling inert. I have a muffin top and wibbly arms for the first time really in my life and I am so blue about it it makes me ever more inert.... I think I shall just be a blob for life. Do you think it is too late?

Amber - I shall be thinking of you and your DH tomorrow....the priest hole is ready and waiting with blankets and warm drinks because I know the whole process is stressful regardless of outcome....

CMOTdibbler · 05/08/2009 22:07

MT, its so crap isn't it. Don't know what more to say.

Congratulations UniS - that must be a huge weight off your shoulders

Never too late Daisy. I do need to get some exercise though, and am seriously considering doing the couch potato to 5k thing. But I hate running.

Can I look after the goats on the commune ? I'm good with livestock generally in fact, and can drive a tractor.

My mad mother was watching Midsomer Murders when she was on the phone tonight, and gave me a running commentry on all her friends as they appeared in it (filmed in their town, and all the extras are locals). Off to see them on Saturday , but have evening out on Sunday to mark 12 years of marriage. Our cleaner is babysitting and has left me strict instructions to 'do all the washing and leave me a lovely pile of ironing'

Amber - have left you a stack of 'Geek Weekly' in the priest hole and a thermos of tea.

DS made white choc and raspberry muffins after nursery today, so there are some on the counter

Jacksmama · 06/08/2009 05:44

Hi all, from the land of inundated-with-blueberries! We went blueberry picking today and picked well in excess of ten pounds. I have just taken a marvelous batch of blueberry muffins out of the oven - would anyone like some? Tomorrow morning it will probably be blueberry pancakes, and I may possibly start some blueberry jam before I have to work.

((((((((((((HUGS))))))))))))) to Mistlethrush and Mistlechick and CMOT and I hope you're all feeling much better very soon! -A slap to the back of the head stern look to Mr. MT and a warning to behave himself.

UniS, very excited that your housing situation is going forward. Cheers and happy sorting!

Your Majesty Daisy, don't worry about the royal muffin top. It merely adds stateliness.

Amber, will be thinking of you and Mr. Amber on Friday. Good luck!!

Bolly with some floating (drunken) blueberries anyone?

amberlight · 06/08/2009 07:55

Geek Weekly! My favourite magazine!!
And some washing up! I've missed it.

Have made up a space in the corner for people who aren't feeling very well, and another space for people who need a job in their families and are very fed up. Blankets and duvets aplenty in both. Orders for breakfasts, lunches and afternoon teas can be placed...

UniS · 06/08/2009 08:42

could i have blueberry pancake please, with maple syrup?

teafortwo · 06/08/2009 10:25

Sorry WOT is goin' on 'ere???- Binary watches???? [airhead emotion]

Lovely to see Amber back !!!!

I am back in Paris unpacking, washing and packing again today and tomorrow as we are off to a hidden corner of Turkey to stay with turtles on a beautiful untouched (well so it says on all the websites and snooze papers I did do my research in) beach on Saturday!

Mistlethrush - I really wish you were coming with us - feels like you could do with some zen time too! (((((hugs))))))!!!!

teafortwo · 06/08/2009 10:35

By the way Unis - Milk is completely addicted to her likabike style bike (cheaper copy)... I was thinking about you as she was whizzing along on it a few days ago!!! I think they are BRIIIIILLLLIANT! But... as our wheels expert I am interested to know - what do you think of them?

UniS · 06/08/2009 12:39

I love balance bikes, and so did boy. Now he has his pedal bike he is somewhat disdainful of them BUT he spent a very happy year whizzing about on his before he had pedals and I'm sure that is why he took to pedals so quickly, in about 3 minutes.

I'm going to try doing the supermarket run by bike today, boy on his bike, me on mine with trailer for shopping! Route is mostly bike paths.

Having sent the last two days talking about moving and decorating a "new" cupboard for boys "new room" he is now impatient to move and doesn't want to wait 2 weeks, he wants to know WHEN the man with the big van is coming NOW.

amberlight · 06/08/2009 12:50

Blueberry pancake orders fulfilled, now baking a small batch of fruitcake.

DS's bike has a flat tyre at the moment so he's not getting very far on that. Great for his jogging, though.

Turkey? With turtles? Excellent!

daisy99divine · 06/08/2009 14:42

thanks for the pancakes, I managed to sneak one before you cleared up!

here is coffee

I have been to Going on a Bear Hunt this morning, it wsa excellent fun. I like tots theatre much more than adults

by the way, Tea, are you going to the same place you went last year? I think we first "met" when you and Milk had just been on a dreamy holiday - or did you go to Morocco? I remember thinking i want to go there, and it's what I'm thinking about your present trip - clearly you are the Tea Room Travel Consultant!

Hmm, I am wondering about a balance bike but fear there is too much traffic....

Catitainahatita · 06/08/2009 18:33

Hello Mistle sorry to hear you aren't feeling too good. I hope Mr. MT's jobhunting is still an ongoing affair and not ground to a stop.

Good luck with Mr. A's tests tomorrow Amber, I'll be thinking of you.

Over here Kittenito is more or less recovered from his op. The only thing is he has managed to pick up a nasty cough which appears to be due to flu (it's unlikely to be anything esle seeing as he has been on strong antibiotics since the op). The Dr. says he is to stay away from nursery another week. This is a bit if a logistical nightmare as I have so very pressing/important work commitments next week. I shall see if they can be rearranged or cancelled, otherwise I'm in a bit of a mess.

DitaVonCheese · 06/08/2009 22:36

Thank you for my bunting daisy - I love bunting and made loads of it for our wedding a few years ago. It was my birthday on Tuesday, but I got a bit confused as to whether I turned 33 at the start or end of the day. We had a very nice day and went to the zoo (may be repeating myself here, bloody wine).

All are welcome in the hippy commune though I'm waiting for the lottery win so I can buy a small dilapitated (?sp God I did English but on the wine again ) stately home - goats but no tents.

I would love love love some blueberries - and a foot rub! I spent most of my pregnancy plotting how to get people to give me foot rubs and largely failing. BabyDita is a recent convert to blueberries, having spat them out before (and the lucky little thing gets a foot rub every single night before bed ).

Sympathies to those looking for jobs - would be good here too. DH has one but (five weeks in) hates it with a passion which is horrid to see while I might have seen a job I actually (kind of) want, but it's full-time so I'm enquiring into how flexible they are ...

thumbwitch · 06/08/2009 22:46

just flitting through - thought I'd better update quickly:
Visa - not yet, but will "be finalised shortly"
Tenants - in house, we in Dad's house
MrThumb - still here but leaving next week with or without us
miniThumb - gorgeous but needy (too much disruption)
general: going steadily broke as have no income and all the first month's rent was swallowed up in costs

Our stuff is in Sydney, we need to get there soon before they napalm it.

Lovely to see amber back, good luck tomorrow with MrA's tests

Maninadirndl · 06/08/2009 22:54

I hope I am welcome here. I am a SAHD.

I'm a reformed parent. When the kids are out I jog like mad.

No one who doesnt do our job would have a clue what it is like.

Jacksmama · 07/08/2009 00:43

Of course you're welcome.
The bar is open, what would you like? I am having prosecco with drunken blueberries .

What is a reformed parent? [curious emoticon]

[oh dear] emoticon for whole Thumb-and-menage-moving-to-Oz situation.

amberlight · 07/08/2009 08:01

Oooo no, they're not going to napalm your stuff, are they, thumb?? (hoping this is one of those expressions rather than a little-disclosed bit of the small print of Australian immigration methods...)

Hello Maninadirdl Have a cup of something and a sit down in the distressed armchair after all that jogging.

Morning everyone. Full English available, or a little light fruit and cereal for those watching their weight. Shall try to update you later on what's happened, if I can still talk.

thumbwitch · 07/08/2009 12:38

amber, I am not too sure how tongue in cheek I was being tbh. The reason being that if we aren't there, and our stuff is, it crossed my mind the Australian Customs might think the stuff belonged to terrorists or something - they don't need much excuse to flambé your belongings, I believe. And what's worse, you can't even get insurance against any damage/incineration they might do - it isn't covered!

Obviously this is fairly anxiety-driven - no doubt I am completely over-reacting and it will all be fine.

amberlight · 07/08/2009 13:11

Eek! Hope you packed a large fire extinguisher...just in case

Too hot for hot choc but could cope with a cuppa. Off in a couple of mins.

teafortwo · 07/08/2009 14:34

We are doing the last minute packing stuff for Turkey today.

Amber - I have decided I am defo going to bring a turtle back for you.... you see...

'A tearoom turtle from Turkey' is an alliteration I simply can't resist!!!

Hello again Dita - I secretly put a big birthday cake over there (points to corner of room) for you... but you didn't notice it!!! Luckily it is long lasting so feel free to tuck in whenever you feel a need for CAAAAKE!!!

Manina - thanks for putting in that you are a man straight away I have spent about one month in another chat thread chatting to someone I thought was a very nice lesbian.... turns out she was a he and is actually a very nice Dad!!! We often do a youtube link to celebrate new comers - feel free to link to a few songs you love!!!

TW - I am also very scared for your stuff - but with the ability to see it all from a distance rather than from your 'in the swim' perspective I seriously strongly suspect that all will be absolutely fine!

Unis - lets have a cheeky afternoon glass of something in honour of balance bikes and all who ride them

and JM - lets have another cheeky one simply to life and happiness!!!

  • cheeeeeers!!!!

Whispers... by the way where is.... madbad???? Holidaying somewhere super hot and sexy with Mr Bond or.... was it the you know - straight jacket again???

amberlight · 07/08/2009 16:52

Yippeeeee!!!!!!!

He's ok...

CMOTdibbler · 07/08/2009 16:57

Wooohooo !!!!!!!! Go Mr Amber ! And his happy heart !

I think it may be time to break out the bolly to celebrate this

Catitainahatita · 07/08/2009 18:53

That's great news Amber
Three cheers for Mr. A. !

JM DS goo your postcard today. He liked it very much. he's a big fan of dogs, so the Goofy was right up his street. Thanks very much.

Catitainahatita · 07/08/2009 19:06

Maninadirl I bid you a cautious welcome. The thing is I have had the somewhat unpleasant experience of reading some of your comments on another thread, which could only be described as sexual haressment. Now, I have never spoken to you / conversed with you on MN before (I only read the other thread) so I have no other antecedents to work with, so I make my observations with these in mind.

After having given this some thought, I think I must make the other posters aware of this and at the same time make clear to you that no such comments would be welcome here.

mistlethrush · 07/08/2009 20:14

Hello all, thank you for your kind thoughts. Dh does actually have something - he's gone to bed having had 2 slices of toast... Ds has gone to bed on only 1/2 main course - he's still coughing. I'm hacking away as though I have a 40 a day habit... (which, I hasten to add, I haven't )

Currently finances not too bad (thanks for asking) but they'll be going down hill fast from now on...

TW - hope no napalm involved - and I hope MrTW doesn't have to abandon you to await your visas - but it won't be for that long. Hope living with DF going OK too.

We're doing 1/2 and 1/2 re bicyles - ds still goes like a bat out of hell on his balance bike - but is starting to do really well on the tag along and trying a bit with his pedal bike - not htat we've tried that much!

T42 - hope you have a fantastic holiday. I will try to come and visit in spirit and try to get some of the positive vibes.

I'm really lucky in that I do like my job - its varied, interesting, not always office based - but I'm just rather busy at the moment. And also a bit (not sick) at dh having time with MJ - not that he sees it like that of course. Mind you, if I was home with him all the time, I would probably be having the same problem..........

Manina - you are very welcome - provided that you abide by the rules of the tearoom which are clearly set out at the beginning of the thread. Are you visiting or coming in for a cup of tea or a glass of wine?
