Tea Room the Ninth: I love rock and roll, put another dime in the juke box baby

MadBadandDangerousToKnow · 16/06/2009 22:20

Welome to the ninth incarnation of the tea room. It's been a long and eventful road, from a tea room overlooking a cathedral garden to a beachside cafe, with a diversion via a yurt. Now - voila - we are in a music lounge. We cater for all tastes and, as this is a tea room of requirement, it manages simultaneously to be many things at once. For some, it is a 70s glam rock disco with a cool boho edge - glitter balls, smoke machine and much wearing of platform shoes and eyeliner. For others, a jazz bar where mellow music is played as cocktails are served. For still others, it's a concert performance of Spem In Allium. We still have a garden, with shady parasols for the summer, and a menagerie of pets. Our membership is international.

The tea room has few rules. Everyone is welcome. But anyone visiting with the sole intention of causing hurt or shouting abuse will be ejected by Mellors, the multi-talented gardener-handyman who (it turns out) is also a guitar wizard and rock god.

Please come in.

Unis - sounds good. I think that MJ could probably ride safely on his pedal bike on his own now - but he still needs a bit of confidence. ANd I'm certainly not going to let him ride on hte roads around here on his own - its bad enough with him tagging along! And even then I am really careful about which routes I choose.... Simlarly I'm careful whihc roads I go on myself!

DitaVonCheese · 03/08/2009 22:37

So sorry I have been such a crap tea-roomer of late Things seem to have been very busy and I'm not entirely sure why

UniS · 03/08/2009 22:55

dita, dita, dita, you are letting yourself GO girl. were those carpet slippers you shuffled in in?

DitaVonCheese · 03/08/2009 23:13

Carpet slippers with marabou fluff on the toes

Jacksmama · 04/08/2009 04:01

Well, that's something at least.. marabou trim, how very very and too too!!
Hi llandb, a brief history of JM - I am Canadian, turned 40 this past April, and live in Langley, British Columbia, which is about 45 min east of Vancouver on the West Coast of Canada. I have a DS who is 18 months (he is lovely and scrummy [besotted mummy emoticon]) and a DH (male), and two cats. Everyone in the tea room knows far more about my ladybits than any of my friends in real life - if you stick around I (or someone else, like Daisy) might explain that one ), and for other info about me - I am an avid and addicted reader, love to make jewelry (although with DS around that's a bit challenging), and occasionally work with my hands in the health care profession.
Chilled wine everyone?
I had the most lovely evening of grubbing in my flowerbed. Ahhhh.... therapy!!!

CMOTdibbler · 04/08/2009 11:19

Don't think its the dreaded flu as temp isn't above 38, but I am feeling vile, and am confined to bed as start to wobble if upright. Slept all day yesterday.

My potted history - am 36, a scientist, have DS who is 3, 3 cats with silly names and a DH. I spend far too much time on planes, but occasionally this is good as I get to meet hairy Canadian truckers like JM (whose DS is totally scrummy)

amberlight · 04/08/2009 13:40

...whereas I am Officially of course Not Here At All, which is odd really, since I seem to be posting on the tea room thread. . In real life I'm the MD of a company and a Bishop's Adviser (poor Bishops...), but spend my time behaving in suspiciously autistic-spectrum-type ways, proably because I am. Lovely teenage ds, lovely dh, just moved offices and don't ask how stressful that was. Currently debating why a notice in the bookshop said "Author signing on Wednesday". Do people sign authors a lot? Which bit?!

Hello again everyone. Been thinking of you lots.

daisy99divine · 04/08/2009 14:25

AMBER YEAH!!! how wonderful (not) to see you!

LLandB love your name - much better choice. I seem to have ended up with something which is frankly a bit pervy....

CMOT sorry you are feeling ill

UniS impressed with Boys cycling

MT impressed with your cycling

Dita great to see you and love the slippers!

T42 glad you are having happy country hols - we are away from next Wed and I can't wait! DaisyBloke arrives home Friday HURRAH!

JM how you getting on with bored and listless half sib?

Jacksmama · 04/08/2009 14:30

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!! AMBER!!!!!!
Huh - where did that come from? It must have followed me from Disneyland where CMOT and I recently met . Oh Amber, I am so happy to see you!! I missed you!! Here, have a hug/ supportive pat/ wave in your general direction (whatever works). Can I offer you anything? Tea? Coffee? Bolly? A hammock? A priest hole?

amberlight · 04/08/2009 15:08

Blimeys!

I'd love a hammock and some bolly, but it's a bit early for that. There again...

Goodness I've missed the tea room and its lovely people. Well, all the lovely people all over mumsnet really. But it's been quite a couple of months with the office move and etc.

CMOTdibbler · 04/08/2009 15:18

'Fank you

Lovely to see you Amber - I was thinking of you the other day when I was at this conference and trying to work out what proportion of the nerds were on the spectrum. Quite high is the answer, although I am disappointed that the beards/socks/sandals rate was lower than usual.

amberlight · 04/08/2009 16:02

No sandals?! The consolation is that all the watches would have been properly synchronised...

Jacksmama · 04/08/2009 16:07

I loooooooooooooooove the socks-and-sandals look - so tree-hugger...

amberlight · 04/08/2009 16:27

Not so sure about the false beard myself, though...and those sandals chafe...

CMOTdibbler · 04/08/2009 17:05

lots of radiocontrolled from the atomic clock watches, and I did see a couple of binary watches.

After I was gently dissed by someone 'gosh, you do seem to know quite a lot about x', a customer whom I have been working with on this subject suggested that I needed to up my geek look by acquiring a beard

daisy99divine · 04/08/2009 17:36
Catitainahatita · 04/08/2009 19:06

Afternoon all,

CMOT I've made some lemon and honey for you (lemons courtesy of our tree, honey courtesy of my FIL), paracetamol courtesy Dr. Simi (pharmacy in Mexico who deal in generics, hence "Dr. Simi[lar])

See here for a demo of their mobile publicity. And bear in mind there is a chap here doing it at 45oC.....

for Amber's return! yey!

More for Dita.

Potted history for llandb: British, living in the north of Mexico, academic historian working at a dead end university, one DS (19 mmnths) one bump (6 months or 26 weeks), one Mexican DH and no pets (lots of allergies here).

Currently off on sick-leave caring for DS who had an op on Friday. I'm missing my airconditioned office. It's 36oC in the house at the mo (damn my thermometer, I really shouldn't check... it just makes me feel worse).

UniS · 04/08/2009 19:17

binary watch? do tell, or shall I google?

waves to all and sundry.
dita the slippers are indeed very very too too. Would you mind trying your warmer dressing gown tomorrow, that one leaves little to teh imagination. Boy will be bringing "baby spot" over to you for a drink soon. Was slightly embarrasing when he did that in front of my in laws saying " baby spot thirsty, he need to drink milk from your nipple". Seems I have the boy trained.

A- nice to see you, how are the dogs and Dh.
Signed authors! the mind boggles, may be it was a publisher looking for unsigned talent, like those unsigned bands nights.

CMOT- go to bed. stay in bed as long as you can. SLEEP.

CMOTdibbler · 04/08/2009 19:36

Binary watch

I have been in bed all day, and all day yesterday - promoted to sofa and duvet now. I feel a lot better, until I move..

DitaVonCheese · 05/08/2009 00:16

CMOT glad to hear you are feeling better.

UniS I am always inspired by the girl in the Bell Jar who wears the dressing gown that clings to her with static electricity

Synopsis of me ... I am 33 and 12 minutes (or 33, 1 day and 12 minutes - I am also ever so slightly pissed on sparkling pinot grigio). I have one DD who is 10 months and hopefully asleep and one DH who has a beard and a very silly sense of humour and who does close-up magic in his spare time. When I win the lottery I will buy some land and set up a hippy commune and live out in the hills, but in the meantime get by by growing a few vegetables in our teeny tiny back yard and reading lots of books. Oh, and I'm a northerner who was exiled to the south for a decade and more but recently returned to the glorious north and very happy about it

daisy99divine · 05/08/2009 03:20

LOL at Binary Watch. I was bluffing. On seeing the real thing my chance of reading it is about as high as oooh, I don't know, my being the Queen or something

Best bit about watch - the website name!!!

Dita - I'm not much cop at reading the time, but can I deduce that it is, or was, your birthday?

V-V-V-V-V-V-V-V-V-V-V-V-V-

some birthday bunting!

Jacksmama · 05/08/2009 03:24

I tried to read the Binary Watch description but after a lo-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-ong first day back at work, it made my head hurt... [disconsolate emoticon]

Dita, when you win the lottery, may we join you in your hippy commune? I so want a vegetable garden...

amberlight · 05/08/2009 08:16

UniS, dh is fine-ish. Heart test results Friday which is a bit scary but nevermind. Mr B the new dog is settling in well, though it's still very odd not to have Mrs A and Mrs C in our lives any more.

Hello to everyone that said hello

Daisy, you're not actually the Queen, are you? If so, I'd like to apologise for that small incident last year at the show in which I asked you to give me a hand setting up the trestle tables...

Always wanted to live in hippy commune, as long as there's no tents involved.

Good to see we have someone else who's a fan of Pinot Gigglio. And Happy late Birthday!

Tea's on, though the NMBs seem to have made off with the eggs

daisy99divine · 05/08/2009 17:40

hello!

would love some pinot gigglio

Amber don't worry, my manners are such that I am never - er - offended by my subjects asking for help with tables

but as philip will confirm I am not very well practised with erections

heh ho
I need a lie down

UniS · 05/08/2009 19:45

Hi alll. good news at che z uni tonight, references etc are all good and back with lettings agent, so we can expect a tennancy agreement in the post. We are ready to exchange and the ball is now in our buyers court, they just have to get the deposit to our guys, then we exchange. So it looks like we know where will be moving to and when. At last. now have 2 weeks to prepare boy for moving. oh and sort out all teh 101 things you need to do change of addresses for.

CMOT- car seats really are a bit of mare once kids get to 18kg arn't they. We shall have to get boy a next stage one soon, he's tipping the scales at 17.7kg in light shorts and T shirt. And his shoulders barely fit in, and his eye line is almost at top. and he is 3.5.

Amber. I shall try and remember you with a thought on friday.

Tonight we shall try and tackle the garage/ bike shed. and sort out what is junk and to be binned and what is to be moved. I did teh cellar yesterday night. have already done clothes. and books , well, I took one or 4 to bookcycle shop and came out with 6 different ones which I've slipped onto bookshelves in various places hoping dh won;t notice them.
I need to get some books boxed soon, so I can build book cases out of teh shelves they are on ( currently fixed to wall on brackets).
