The SIXTH Tea Room - Everyone Welcome

Jacksmama · 21/03/2009 00:18

The One Child Tea Room started as a sort of sanctuary for anyone who was a bit tired of the controversy surrounding having one child only, for whatever reason. The topic seems to attract that sort of thing. So we thought we needed a place where a cup of tea and a muffin and a place to sit down and relax was needed - and judging by the number of visitors and regulars, it really was much needed!

The tea room has since undergone a few, shall we say, metamorphoses... it started as a charming bricks and mortar sort of place, with a lovely English garden, a ha-ha in the distance, and wonderful mismatched crockery.

But since the tea room is truly magical, at night, the glitter ball comes out, and booze and sofas canapees are served. During the daytime, there is a stable with (at last count) two horses, Earl and Lady Grey, who appreciate being exercised. We also have (at last count) two guinea pigs, RacingPig and RacingMissPiggy... but since they seem to have been up to no good, that count may increase shortly.

In its most recent incarnation, the tea room became a yurt, and we had Mellors The Gardener show up in buckskin trousers and no shirt (which caused several of the regulars to either fan themselves with whatever magazines were available, or faint prettily, preferably into Mellors' arms), and there seems to have been an errant bison or two.
Oh, and we also had the Naked Mohawk Babies - they were originally cake decorations (for the life of me, I cannot find the link right now) - and they have since taken on lives of their own, adding much amusement to the tea room.

Decorations include cut-outs of George Clooney, Wesley Snipes, and any other hunks of burning love we can think of. Oh, and peace lilies, and (since nothing seems to be able to kill the damn thing) an aspidistra.

For those who are shy of company, or fleeing controversial threads, we have a Priest Hole to hide relax in.

Please remember that the tea room is magical - no amount of Bolly swilled will cause a hangover, allergies of any type mean nothing, so you can eat and drink whatever you like, and if you don't fancy the distressed-looking couch, a brand-new comfy arm chair will appear in seconds.

EVERYONE is welcome, whether you have one child, none, or ten. In fact, one of our regulars is currently pregnant!!

The only strict rule we enforce is no fisticuffs. Anyone who behaves disagreeably will be ejected by Mellors (fully clad).

Most important of all - the tea room is meant for fun and support. It's perfectly acceptable, and in fact, mandatory, to be a little unhinged yourself.

Welcome all!!

(I've had a somewhat trying day so I will leave the crating and moving of china, and the actual shaping of the tea room, to everyone else... I did hear rumours of a spa being added, however, so please, book me in for a pedicure, will you? Thanks!)

I am here but was waiting to read the rest of the bits I've missed before replying - but if you've gone, sorry I missed you, Donk!

How is your Dad doing these days, btw?

teafortwo · 02/04/2009 23:35

Oh no Donk - it wasn't you that sent me to sleep it was JM's cocktail. After all the drinking of champagne earlier... that cocktail made me feel very very sleepy!

I am also finding PolicyWonk's threads, blog and twitters very interesting too.... she is such a star reporter!

Now the sun is starting to show himself now and again I thought this might be useful....

thumbbunny · 02/04/2009 23:41

Ok. Have caught up properly now.

JBM - glad your ladybits are almost in working order again!
I love limoncello - years ago there was a bottle of stuff around called Dainton's Lemon Cut - it was just like limoncello and made excellent "lemonade" when mixed with sparkling water or fizz - got pretty pissed on it one night...

T42 - I get the impression that there are some words that seem to resonate with the very core of our understanding from a very early age - naughty appears to be one of them; Mine, Ouch, Stop, Gentle/y, are some others. There are probably lots more.
Even my mum's cat understood "gentle"!

amber - sorry to hear of your DH's frustration with tests etc. - it is dreadfully irritating, waiting for the tests and then still not being told what the result/outcome definitively means.

RS - sorry about your DH's x-ray result too - hope that turns out to be completely trivial.

MadBadandDangerousToKnow · 02/04/2009 23:59

Thish lemonade ish delishioush. Hic.

teafortwo · 03/04/2009 00:10

Oh Thumbbunny - I like your theory on "words that seem to resonate with the very core of our understanding from an early age". Also I am impressed that you read the post you were commenting on. I wrote it while Milk was leaping about next to me and when I later read over it... I had difficulty understanding it myself! I think you have to replace 'people' with 'person' and then it is easier!

rs - I'm sorry I missed the sentence about your DH - keep us posted it must be really stressful for you, right now!

Amber - I have somehow missed where you are packing to go? Links pleeeeeaaaase to the area so we can all oooohhh and aaaaaahhhrrrr

Donk - That hat took me ages to make please don't eat it!!!!..... too late!

teafortwo · 03/04/2009 00:12

Are you awake???

thumbbunny · 03/04/2009 00:21

lol Tea - perhaps I just managed to get the essence of it while skipping over the actuality of the sentence - I have just had another look and see what you mean!

MadBad - "lemonade" is dam' dangerous, you know! Our Dainton's stuff was before all the alcopops came out but was very like them - alcoholic but you didn't really notice the alcohol, hence the extreme pissedness - especially as it was a lovely drink for a sunny day!

teafortwo · 03/04/2009 00:27
thumbbunny · 03/04/2009 00:35

very artistic Tea! [approving smile]

Donk · 03/04/2009 06:56

Tea - I did NOT eat the hat. It is beautiful!
It will be perfect for summer - it even has holes in exactly the right places for my ears!

And a blue ribbon - my favourite colour.

(As this is the tea room, the beautiful spring flowerw will, of course, not wilt)

Thankyou

amber32002 · 03/04/2009 07:37

Jackbunnysmama, phew! re your check-up and you not being in pain now. And I think a bit of frustration on your part is extremely called-for, too. Goodness me, children are wonderful but that amount of arrghh afterwards is hardly what you were hoping for,eh. Large morning cuppa for you, I think.

Morning everyone. We're not going anywhere particularly exotic so soon after all of hubby's travails (and I can't go by plane thanks to potions I'm taking), so it's the gentle hills of Sussex, near Hastings, for us and friends and our collective three offspring. They'll do teenagery things, we'll partake of the occasional glass of wine and enjoy some history and gardens and sunshine and a really good chat. Might manage a cruise in summer. The one the year before last was brilliant, especially with the mad captain.

As usual, have managed to drift off to sleep in a corner of the tearoom well before everyone else, waking to discover whichever early morning DIY magazine-reading Mellors is attempting today. Seems to be "Camel herding for the Outdoor Adventurer". Not sure you can herd just one camel, to be honest, and it does seem a bit knock-kneed to me so might not need a lot of herding. But as long as it's happy eating its way through the beds and borders next door...(thinking) Oh no! Quick! Herd that camel!!

mistlethrush · 03/04/2009 09:03

Morning all - glad to hear the news JM - must be a great relief. The question is, have you been told 'to do the deed' between the 6 wks date and your checkup? . Its sometimes amazing what Drs expect you to be able to do because you've been told to do it...

Feeling slightly blurred this morning. Have had one of those headaches, but can't take anything, so just feeling unfocused and slightly queasy...

CMOTdibbler · 03/04/2009 12:10

Chebe bread pizza anyone ? Its wheat and gluten free and very tasty.

mistlethrush · 03/04/2009 12:12

That sounds interesting CMot - yes please!

Who was it that had the egg free muffin recipies? Found out this morning that the egg-free boy is going to come to the party and want to make as many things OK for him as poss....

CMOTdibbler · 03/04/2009 12:16

These sound good, or how about these

The recipe I got from JM has eggs - might work with mashed banana instead ?

Racingsnake · 03/04/2009 12:25

Mistle - can you use those head ache strips and gels they advertise on TV? Or there is an accupuncture point you can press on the back of your head just where your spinal column joins your skull, where there is a little sort of inverted V in your skull. A bit of massage around there couldn't hurt. Also, drink lots of water and try massaging your temples. Maybe Mellors has a moment.

Tea - I think it is the parents, not the childre, who have an issue with 'Naughty'. I agree about home/school behaviour maangement. At school I can just fold my arms, look at the class and wait - if I did that at home I would be festooned with cobwebs before Wriggle noticed.

mistlethrush · 03/04/2009 12:37

RS - thanks. Not sure about the gels... Might get one of those cooling things for foreheads though. Do know about the point behind head - does sometimes help, although yesterday seemed almost to make things worse.

Starting to cross fingers about the weather!

thumbbunny · 03/04/2009 15:49

afternoon everyone - am a bit pissed - went for lunch with DH ad DS (DH had a freebie to use up) and DH ordered me my red wine spritzer but managed to order a large glass of red wine, topped up with a bit of soda water. 250 ml of wine! I haven't had that much in one go for ages, not since before I was pg! feeling disticntly tipsy...

thumbbunny · 03/04/2009 15:55

LOOK! Easter smileys!
loving this one

Jackbunnysmama · 03/04/2009 16:44

EASTER SMILEYS!!!!!

Morning all!
I'm glad the Sparkling Lemondrops went over so well yesterday. (Couldn't resist.)

I did manage to get completely pissed on them without even realizing it... they go down quite quickly!!

Mistle, I did ask the surgeon exactly what she meant, and the instructions were "no hanky-panky for another 6 weeks, and then attempt very carefully if I'm up to it, and come back in 8 or 9 weeks". I think she wants us to at least have tried it before I see her again - I imagine she wants to know if there are serious problems.
TMI anyone?

Catitainahatita · 03/04/2009 18:16

Cool smilies!

I have just realised that our Easter holidays begin tomorrow

This is good; and bad. Good in the sense that I have no more classes for a fornight. Bad in the sense that we are hot footing it to DH's village so DS can be christened. I just feel so terrible that the thought of the 3 day journey there and back (I kid you not) in the car is not appealing right now.

And bad in the sense that I will miss you lot! Plus, someone must volunteer to remeber that it is JBM's birthday on 9 April and get Mellors organised with a not-so-surprise bash

mistlethrush · 03/04/2009 21:16

Evening all. I did like the sparkling lemondrops. I must admit that I'm rather partial to Kir Royale too. Although I also discovered that gin takes off some of the sweetness of casis rather nicely too

JM - Drs do get to ask quite a lot of their patients don't they!

thumbbunny · 03/04/2009 22:29

JBM - bit trepidatious, I would think, testing out your newly-repaired ladybits - I know I was quite nervous the first time having conjugals with DH after DS was born (it was a looooong time after, I'd basically forgotten how! ) I wonder how much detail the doc wants on how it went?

Catita - shouldn't you be Rabbitainahatita for Easter? . your 3-day journey sounds horrendous - I'll put you down for a transporter machine when I've invented one, shall I? Need one for getting back from Australia at high speed whenever we eventually emigrate there.

MT - oooh, Kir Royale... - now you've said it, I feel the need for one - by the Power of Tea Room, lo, one appears beside me. Want one too? (what about your Easter name - MistleChick, maybe?)

Racingsnake · 03/04/2009 22:40

Just spent the evening helping my best friend write a eulogy (?) for her mother. Which I will read out at the funeral for her. While Wriggle makes a nuisance of herself and relieves the atmosphere a bit (by special request).

I started to wonder if we should ever have children, if we will put them through this one day.

May have to go and find Justabout to help me ponder things.

thumbbunny · 03/04/2009 22:47

Oh RS - sad for you. Don't get me going on that - my Mum died (far too young) just before my 40th b'day when I was pg with DS - it made me think gosh, I will be 80 by the time he is 40, if I live that long - you can imagine how that made me feel, knowing that by having him so late, he was more likely to lose me at a younger age than I would like.
My mum didn't lose her mum until she was 58 - far more reasonable.
My Dad was 62 when he lost his mum - I'd have to be 102 for DS to be that old!!(if you're following my logic..)
