Tea room the 5th - welcome to the yurt

1000 replies

UniS · 24/02/2009 10:49

Welcome to the tea room. A warm welcome to everyone, whether you have one child, none, or ten. This is a tea-and-muffin or booze-and-sofasorcanapees sanctuary for all. But certain standards of behaviour continue to apply - anyone engaging in fisticuffs will be ejected by George Clooney, ably assisted by Mellors the Gardener.

You have found us- did you like teh slide/ bridge over teh HaHa. Teh priest hole is still available, its just over there.

Mellors and I have erected the yurt, strewn rugs around and good a good fire going in the wood burner. The place is feeling toasty and warm with not a draft to be felt. The kettle is now singing away on the hob. selection of teas for all taste on the shelf along with the hand made by potters mugs. Mellors very ably fitted teh yurt window with a window sill onto which can be placed a selection of pot plants and george.

Can someone sort out RP ( who I think came over with the sofa) and plump up the hay pile for donk.

A Previous incarnation of Tea room may be found here

Blimey, the Yurt has been off my Threads I'm On for days ... but I had to come back.

I've survived taking six 4/5yo girls to the cinema (well, me, DH and one of the other mums who stepped in at the last minute) and then to lunch, visit of the prodigal BiL, and am now gearing up to DD's actual sniff 5th birthday tomorrow.

Still, despite my slight melancholy at the passing of the years, no chance of me being drummed out of the one-child topic - I was accused of looking like at a newborn today, and I have to admit I was.

amber32002 · 18/03/2009 06:10

Photos of the outfit definitely required, CMOT!
UniS, glad you got to your yoga in time.
DontCallMeBaby, good to see you back . Happy Birthday to your DD!!
Morning everyone. Tea and coffee are ready, chickens are re-bedded, horses turned out in the field and the washing up's done. (Phew!)

I've noted that teenage DS may well have a future on the stage... he has the lead role in the Drama this year, & he got to the main speech at the end, forgot what was in it, and improvised a solid ten minutes of lines without anyone (including his drama teacher) noticing that anything had changed .

DontCallMeBaby · 18/03/2009 08:07

Thank you Amber, you're the first person to wish her happy birthday apart from me and DH!

Ha, nice one to your DS! Ten minutes' improv is quite impressive anyway, let alone when you're supposed to be scripted and no one notices! Hee.

Bah, I just followed a link to a story 'Chinese food fights breast cancer' on the BBC website. See, I KNEW it wasn't going to be 'shock news - lemon chicken and egg fried rice really good for you', but I still had hope. Mushrooms (blech) and green tea (jasmine, yes). Oh well.

thumbwitch · 18/03/2009 10:32

Amber - kudos to your DS - that's a true skill! especially when faced with the potential nervousness of having forgotten the lines. Fantastic!

Happy birthday to DCMB's DD as well!

AWWWWWW!!!! ITNG has just come on and DS is doing the finger round the hand thing himself! bless. Haven't seen him do that before - I guess this is the start of the copycat phase?

daisy99divine · 18/03/2009 10:37

Ha Ha Ha DCMB - I think that is why I prefer to read headlines only! I know that duck in pancakes helps no end of ills!

Happy birthday Baby DCMB! I know it is hard to see the year's pass. I was talking to some friends who were complaining that their 23 year old son still lived with them and I told them about my fears I was losing DaisyBoy now that he was doing 3 hours at nursery 3 days a week. They looked at me very !!!

Amber, well done, the yurt looks splendid. Are you going to mend Mellor's the mower's big end or leave it to MadBad? I must find that story about the mowed over buddhist monk it was sort of awful in it's bland detail....

UniS glad you got to yoga. I went swimming yesterday so feeling smug and good.

CMOT yes please to photos in corset, but beware, JM might try to recruit you!

UniS laughed at dominatrix/ fascinator mix up - your spell check knew it was the yurt!

Mistle - any word on the agency/ job?

Donk - how's your dad

Catita - how are you feeling?

need tea after all that love spreading!!

daisy99divine · 18/03/2009 10:38

thumb that is lovely, I always try to do it to DasiyBoy but he says, "no Mummy, it's the little boy/ girl in bed. DaisyBoy not sleeping, he's watching!"

nakedmowhawkbaby · 18/03/2009 11:23

Come on down boys!!!

Let's go out in the sunshine to play!!! Looks like Mellors needs some help with the mower!

nakedmowhawkbaby · 18/03/2009 11:23

BLEEAAH!!!

I don't like ginger. as some of you lot say

RacingMrsPiggy · 18/03/2009 11:26

Catitainahatita · 18/03/2009 12:39

Hi all,
Just nipping in to see how you are doing. Looks like mayhem as usual...

Internet is brken at work so had to get up very early to check my emails before going in

Thanks for asking how I am Daisy. I think a [sick emoticon] needs to be added to the choice. It wen away last week, but now the nausea is back. Yippee.

Must go. See you ladies later.

Racingsnake · 18/03/2009 13:01

Catita, this is the sick emoticon.

RP came for a walk with Wriggle this morning in his bucket. Not sure he'll be going again; don't think I can stand the stress of managing DH, RacingDog, and Wriggle insisting on holding RP's bucket in her feet. Just thought how long it would take to find RP in the hedges along the lane. Now see that he would have reported straight back to us if he had got spilled, as long as MissPiggy were left at home.

daisy99divine · 18/03/2009 14:56

at RS with RL RacingPig problems!

MadBadandDangerousToKnow · 18/03/2009 15:00

I'm just popping in briefly to say hello before going out again on the school run.

Sorry to hear you're feeling , Catita.

I'm at the mental picture of Wriggle walking with a bucket containing Racingpig wedged between her feet. Perhaps it could be the novelty race at the Yurt Sports Day, if RacingMissPiggy (and any other cavie friends) were willing to oblige? On second thoughts, perhaps the Not So Naked Mohawk Babies could ride in the buckets?

CMOTdibbler · 18/03/2009 16:57

Hmmm - I do actually have a fascinator... Although I was going to wear a beady thing round my hair in a bun - but DH pointed out that it might all look a bit strict and I should wear my hair down for a change.

I will get someone to take photos and post them - after my Friday overhaul (gel overlays on nails, hair cut, eyebrow shape all booked) I may look respectable.

Had a nice drive up the M6 today in the sun, and a meeting with a total geek. With strangely hairy ears - couldn't tear my eyes away from them..

I hope that RP and Miss RP are taking precautions. We don't want a yurt full off BabyRPs

I suggested to DH we holiday in a yurt. He was very

DontCallMeBaby · 18/03/2009 18:00

Fly-by posting ... it's the NMBs!

mistlethrush · 18/03/2009 21:32

Evening all, have been in sunny York today - beautiful day, but in a conference all day so didn't see enough of it. Left home this morning in brilliant sunshine and in half a mile was in thick fog. And stayed in fog all the way there... Daffodils out too.

Mistledog has decided to be very companionable and sit on her (our) rug next to me on the sofa, rather than camping out in her basket...

RS - you do know that you can get small harnesses don't you? Got one for the chins but they hated it - didn't persist! Just thought that if Wriggle persisted in insisting on taking Racingpig in a bucket, might stop the worry about removing said pig for hedgerows...

Madbad - it did look a good rumba!

Amber - what a great actor!

CMot - photos please!

DCMB - I'm glad the recommended 6 went OK! How did the birthday go? Just starting to get prepared for ds's 4th birthday party....

UniS - I'm glad that you got to yoga OK - and that you don't have a ghost!!!

(is that everyone?)

DontCallMeBaby · 18/03/2009 21:50

Ah, the six children on Saturday. In the interest of scientifically studying the effects of birth order and siblings (or not) I give you:

DD (only child, obv): bit clingy, ended up on daddy's lap during film, otherwise fine, didn't eat much
Friend #1 (third child, two teenage siblings): barely knew she was there, just looked after herself, although was quite outspoken on car journeys (only three children present)
Friend #2 (eldest of two, toddler sibling): thought she was upset in the cinema, turned out to be absolutely enthralled with film, took two adults to find out what she wanted for lunch
Friend #3 (youngest of two, sub-two-year age gap): a bit under the weather, hence mum came with us, so results inconclusive
Friend #4 (only child, separated parents): very fidgety in cinema, climbed all over the place in restaurant, did a runner while waiting for her mum afterwards
Friend #5 (youngest of two, four year age gap): also fidgety and climby, gave her a lift home, claimed to feel sick in car, didn't like sweets and went on and on about only liking popcorn ...

#4 and #5 were the ones I predicted would be the biggest handful, nothing to do with birth order etc, not even to do with #5 being a notoriously fiery redhead ... just what I've seen of their personalities so far!

I must get round to telling my mother-of-six friend that I am absolutely in awe of her.

The actual birthday has been lovely, potion-friend didn't do anything unexpected this time, they all painted their toenails and managed not to get any on the carpet. I made a rather fab party tea, although I have to admit I ate most of the sausages - I think the kids ate all the cheese-n-pineapples, which was rather disappointing as I was hoping to get some of those (I love cheese-n-pineapple, when I was a bit older than DD I ate 24 at a party and was sick on my bedroom carpet).

UniS · 18/03/2009 22:32

24 chese and pineapples!!!!! You were counting?! I did once work out by experiment that I could eat more milk choc hob nobs than plain before feeling sick. Can;t remember ho many it was tho. I was at a festival at teh time, in teh days of long drop loos so being sick s not an attractive idea.

DH has taken himself off to bed early feeling ickky. Boy had major paddy just before bedtime. I've spent ll afternoon working on event planning and I'M NOT DOING the emergency procedures doc or teh expanded Risk assesment tonight.

so I shall come here and hang out with my netbook on a charmingly distressed sofa for a bit.

I saw a bit of Blue Peter this afternoon - there was a girl on there doing her video diary of what it's like to be one of 13 sisters .

THIRTEEN GIRLS IN ONE HOUSE! With their mum, they have enough for a full game of netball, which they play in the back garden. Their poor dad...

DCMB - imagine taking that lot to the cinema...

CMOTD - looking forward to the pics!

Anyone else for Bolly?

Jacksmama · 19/03/2009 02:11

Holy cow, I am so far behind on reading what you've all been up to, I don't think I'll ever catch up until we've moved into the 6th tearoom!

Did any of us ever think we'd get to six threads?? I don't know about you all, the wider world of MN, while mostly fun and informative and sometimes wonderfully heart-warming, hasn't held my fascination as much as chatting with all of you. Plus, there are never any fights in the yurt - thank God!

We have had a thoroughly miserable week. Jackspapa has been ill with a cold (a real cold, not the man-flu, I'd like to say), and we didn't know if Jackbaby had a cold as well or if it was simply that big nasty molar coming through. He's had a fever, runny nose, has been miserable and crying and clingy - not at all like my usual happy, easy-going baby. Well, tonight I found out why he's been so distressed - he's cutting not one, but at least three, if not four teeth!! A new bottom tooth popped through (he'd only had two) without us noticing - my finger found it a few minutes ago, or perhaps I should say it found my finger , and when I wrestled him down in the bathroom (brighter lights) I saw that the molar has cut through, and the canines on top are just about to.
[dumb-ass mother emoticon] How did I miss that???

So - I have no clue what's been happening, other than that MadBad and Mellors have done the horizontal rhumba or tango... shall now read backwards and catch up.

daisy99divine · 19/03/2009 03:06

Hello JM lovely to see you, yes, the Yurt is fascinating and full of fascinators

Poor Jackbaby - have you tried amber necklace? Has worked a treat with DasiyBoy (I think!)

right, off to bed

anyone seen Tea lately? Thinking of Original Tea Drinkers?

Catitainahatita · 19/03/2009 03:27

Hello - I thought I'd drop by before going to bed.

DCMB: Well done on entertaining 6 children. We'll be presenting ou with a special yurt medal later on.

It seems the NMB are engaged in a cunning plan to achieve world domination from their base here in the yurt. We need to keep an eye on them and their consumption of twiglets and anything else that could be fasioned as a weapon or confiscated at a US airport by a grumpy looking security guard.

Jacksmama Sorry to hear about Jackbaby's teeth. Now they have broken through the gum he'll perhaps feel a bit better.

The goings on in the yurt are such a life line to a more sane world for me (you think the yurt is surreal, you want to live in Mexico for a while ) I tend to get a bit lonely over here, starved of intelligent conversation and pigeon holed as a foreign weirdo

Sleep well ladies

Racingsnake · 19/03/2009 04:07

Wriggle sick all over me at 03.16. Now happily installed with me on tea-room sofa and very ready for a chat about cuddles, tea shirts and flowers. I now have very damp arms and have forgotten to leave out clean pyjamas for me. All nice fresh milk, though, which had barely had time to hit Wriggle's unnards before bouncing back again. That dammed cough!

Love the idea of tny guinea pig harnesses.

Am in awe at the time CMOT obviously manages to carve out to keep 'looking respectable'. (Actually sounds more glamourous than respectable) My greatest ambition at the moment is to find time on the same day to brush my teeth and my hair. Came across picture of myself with infant Wriggle in hospital yesterday and I looked glowing and many years younger. Wish I knew how to get back there ...I absolutely hate getting caught in photos of Wriggle.

Still life is great fun at the moment and I now have an unexpected two free days to enjoy the sun (due to quarantine imposed on us by friends with babies who don't want Wriggle's cough). May go and test drive a car or two, do some gardening, check up on Mellors' progress with potager ...
