Tea room the 5th - welcome to the yurt

1000 replies

UniS · 24/02/2009 10:49

Welcome to the tea room. A warm welcome to everyone, whether you have one child, none, or ten. This is a tea-and-muffin or booze-and-sofasorcanapees sanctuary for all. But certain standards of behaviour continue to apply - anyone engaging in fisticuffs will be ejected by George Clooney, ably assisted by Mellors the Gardener.

You have found us- did you like teh slide/ bridge over teh HaHa. Teh priest hole is still available, its just over there.

Mellors and I have erected the yurt, strewn rugs around and good a good fire going in the wood burner. The place is feeling toasty and warm with not a draft to be felt. The kettle is now singing away on the hob. selection of teas for all taste on the shelf along with the hand made by potters mugs. Mellors very ably fitted teh yurt window with a window sill onto which can be placed a selection of pot plants and george.

Can someone sort out RP ( who I think came over with the sofa) and plump up the hay pile for donk.

MellorstheGardener · 04/03/2009 21:26

You called, Donk?

mistlethrush · 04/03/2009 21:54

Sorry about earlier, don't know what I was thinking of

Sorry about that Mellors

JM - have a good swim

Donk - I hope your hay has survived OK... My mother was a teacher - she ended up doing a PGCE when I was at senior school - she talks of one of the classes where the only way she got a semblance of control was to get them to go out and line up in the corridor, then file back in to their desks... Either that or rely on the rather large girl who would pick the whole (traditional) desk up and drop it on the floor and demand quiet...!!!)

Unis - I hope its a cure!

Donk · 04/03/2009 22:32

Thankyou Mellors
I'm sorry glad you got your trousers back.
(What was Mistle thinking of?)

CMOT - are you around?
Dad has been diagnosed with a grade 3 aplastic astrocytoma.
They haven't done any DNA or cyto analysis (grrr!)

I guess if I want to go see him I should do it sooner rather than later...

thumbwitch · 04/03/2009 22:44

Donk - you sure it's not an anaplastic astrocytoma? Just looked at CRUK website and that's what they call the Grade 3 astrocytomas - they don't offer an aplastic version.

I think perhaps sooner rather than later would be good, but not too immediately.

Amber - I hope you've left that other thread alone - I know what it's like, not only do you feel the need to defend your corner, to instruct until they bloody well get it, and to make sure that they are doing your pov justice (instead of misconstruing even a small part of what you are saying) but you can't leave a point unanswered in case they think they've won! (Or is that just me?)

Evening everyone else as well!

Donk · 04/03/2009 22:46

Ooops - spot the typo!
I really must preview these posts!

MadBadandDangerousToKnow · 04/03/2009 23:00

I need an early night, but before I go I'd like to give Donk an ear rub and this galvanised bucket of tea.

Amber - Have another iced bun. The magical properties of the yurt mean that nobody ever suffers from tooth decay or a spreading waistline, so tuck in!

Goodnight everyone.

thumbwitch · 04/03/2009 23:05

night MadBad

Donk - my Dad has done some supply teaching as well, a few years ago now - he was stunned and amazed at how bad some pupils really were, and not only that but when he sent them to see the Deputy Head or whoever, they just got sent straight back again! No back up discipline whatsoever.

But some of the children, the ones who actually wanted to learn something, really appreciated Dad's "old-fashioned" methods of discipline - at least they got some work done!

daisy99divine · 05/03/2009 00:55

Gosh I think I'm a bit late tonight!

Donk I am so sorry about your Dad. Not much to say really - I don't know as much as The Wise on this thread. CMOT will be back from San Fran soon

MadBad I have had such feminine experiences with DaisyBoy. My favourite. On the bus. "Mummy, what's your other hole for?" ... trying to remember his anatomy lesson....in a loud piercing voice

Amber I rarely venture out of the tea room, it's nice and safe here!

Catitainahatita · 05/03/2009 02:39

Ok Unis. To further the cause of a good night out I'm putting a photo of me on my profile in a real honest to goodness Mexican poncho and hat. I was 8 months pregnant when it was taken but you couldn't tell.

The poncho is varying shades of brown; but Mexicans love colour. Pink houses with yellow rooves are quite comon for example. Its just a cheerful thing they do.

For the rest of you long suffering souls needing some light relief the pic is there to give you all a big laugh. I look ridiculous but DH thought it was great He took the photo originally to cheer my mum up.

I bet Mellors could make th outfit some how sexy though

Racingsnake · 05/03/2009 04:06

Hello, RPig. I haven't had a moment to see you all day. How are you getting on with RacingMissPiggy? Rather too much pushing and squeaking and giggling yesterday, I thought. Concerned that Extremely Fertile Friend Who Knows Everything (and owns five donkeys) may have made a mistake with the guinea pig sexing. She came for a visit at the weekend with new baby, telling me she was already working on no. 3 and 4, as who woud want to be 40 when they had a baby. She didn't seem to remember that I am already 85.

Thank you for enquiries about WS and M.Racing. Last night WS had a temperature of 39 after calpol; very sorry for herself. DH had her all day as I had extra long day at work. He let her sleep all day, which probably explains why she is wide awake at 3.30 am. He is, of course, not awake. No news about lungs.

Mistle, when things get too stressful at home, I secretly administer Bach flower remedies to other family members. Not ethical, I am told, but better than other things I might be tempted to secretly administer when pushed to the limit.

Donk, sorry that yor news appears to be less than encouraging. Very impressed with anyone who does supply at all, let alone with teenagers. That is probably the last thing you need at the moment. Or does it work as a counter irritant and take your mind off your own worries?

Amber, I can never find the threads other people talk about, so I don't really know what you are going through, but I gather that it is something about asbergers(?) I sympathise, anyway, and am glad that the priest hole has appeared again when needed. I don't know anything about the condition, apart from the fact that I have taught two boys with the condition spectacularly badly as I had no idea what i was doing and no advice. We were told they had no concept of others' feelings, which seems strange as they were both quite expert in saying the most hurtful things possible to all the staff and children. They surely couldn't have done that without a good understanding of others. Maybe that was just because they were unhappy at school. I still feel guilty about them.

Glad to hear that Catita's thumb and MadBaby's head are on the mend - as is JM, I hope. We appear to be generally falling apart in here!

Right, I'm off to try and persuade WS to go to sleep.

Happy Christmas to Uni, waves to Daisy, Thumb, DCMB, Tea and all other regulars. Aren't the Baked Babies rather adorable when asleep? (Wouldn't WS be rather adorable if asleep?)

Jacksmama · 05/03/2009 05:50

I don't know what to say - maybe I should pass the tearoom bunny to you for now?

We had so much fun swimming and met another mummy with a one-year-old. Both Jackbaby and I took a nap when we got home - funny how the pool tires out kids of all ages.

Time for bed!

amber32002 · 05/03/2009 06:52

Donk, goodness me re your Dad. Is it easier to know exactly what he has, or more difficult? Hugs for you, definitely.

Good news re the contract, MadBad.

Since people ask, Jacksmama, no-one knows about autism and vaccines for sure. The government says there's not a shred of evidence that vaccines cause it. Some parents disagree strongly. It's all we know.

Racingsnake, yes, it's very difficult to understand autism, even if people are specialists or have children with it. A minority of people with autism are 'badly behaved boys', but because they are so spectacularly badly behaved, people think that's what it is. And of course only the really badly behaved boys ever got put in front of a diagnosing person, so the autism specialists used to think that's what it looked like too.

The great majority of us are quietly eccentric and do our utmost to learn all the rules for being Polite At All Times. (but unfortunately since we can't see/hear 95% of communication - body language, tone of voice etc - we still manage to get it wrong a huge number of times which is very embarrassing indeed )

I guess that if those boys don't realise that rude names hurt, it's why they don't stop doing it. Instead, they just notice the reaction. If saying a rude thing makes someone's face go a funny colour and makes them say things, that's a reaction and they'll do it again to see if the reaction happens again. It's a scientific experiment rather than something malicious, in a way, using phrases heard from other people or off the tele and repeated in different combinations to see which one works the best for getting their face to do strange things. It's not the same as 'knowing how to hurt someone', because they have not the slightest clue that it does indeed hurt. Curious, but true. Needs a specialist to help them make the connection. Teaching us is often very specialised because of the way we see and experience the world, so I'm that you had no help or training given to help you with it. You were entitled to some. This year is autism year in the schools and the government's sending decent resources round (hooray!).

Anyway, sorry about that tangent. Thank you everyone for being there yesterday. I think it was just a reaction to events and I needed a bit of a hand with being sensible.

mistlethrush · 05/03/2009 09:19

Morning Amber - I might have a sandwich at lunch time - they look really good. Would you like a cup of tea? I think it would probably be a good idea to leave that link and the prejudicial posts on it alone today though! Why don't you come and sit on the sofa and watch the sunlight streaming in from the sun room - or you're very welcome to join me in there for some companionable silence (need a bit of quiet - MJ back into 'sound effects' rather too much at the moment).

amber32002 · 05/03/2009 10:00

MT, definitely leaving the controversy alone today, and a nice sit on the sofa sounds ideal . Afraid the egg sandwiches got eaten but there's toast and croissants...

mistlethrush · 05/03/2009 10:28

OOoo a croisant would be very nice thank you, and would go well with tea - another cup?

Perhaps we can persuade Mellors or even the NMBs to go and collect the eggs (while we stay sitting in the sunshine ) and make some more for lunch...

thumbwitch · 05/03/2009 10:38

morning all!

I hope WS is feeling a bit better today, RS!

amber, good to see you out the priesthole and staying away from wind-up merchants. Have some hot chocolate

mistle, hope your DH has a change of luck soon!

we are having a new carpet fitted this morning and I am to admit that I might have measured the room short so might end up having a join in a very bad place (doorway). Am v.v. peed off with self.

amber32002 · 05/03/2009 10:51

Thumbwitch, oh no! Any way you can fill in with an old oak floorboard and call it a design feature??

daisy99divine · 05/03/2009 11:11

Morning all! Just what I need some tea, croissants, a sit in the sun and a chat with friends

Amber hugs to you and glad you are going to Stay Away from others.

Mistle is MJ being loud naughty or just Very Loud in that particular young boy way

Racing your post made me laugh it wsa so brim full of breathless chat!! Hope wriggle is feeling better

thumb nice to see you, rats about the carpet

We are in throws of advertising and interviewing for a new nanny. Crikey it is stressful. I keep getting texts and emails and can't remember which one is from whom...
I feel like Norman Wisdom "The chalice from the palace has the brew that is true" "The vessel with the pestle..."

nakedmowhawkbaby · 05/03/2009 11:15

Here we go here we go here we go!!!!

OK Boys, gently does it! Let's get these eggs up on the side ready for sandwich making!

Righto, come on lads, back to that sauna in the Priest hole! What fun we had!!! You don't think we disturbed Amber do you? She seems quite mesmerised by the flickering fire she could spy by peeping out from the Priest hole and peering through the Donkey's legs!!!!

Bison · 05/03/2009 11:17

NOW, where are those teeny tiny little painted and strangely almost naked mowhawk babies???

I did not enjoy being goaded with those teeny tiny tomahawks. I shall find them, I shall you know and when I do, well watch out is all I can say!!!

Mellorsthegardenerofsorts · 05/03/2009 11:20

Morning my lovelies!

Right, where's that ruddy bison. Come on lad! Let's be having you! We have No Fisticuffs in this tea room, haven't you read the Rules? That extends to Bisons you know! No Butting or Ramming allowed!

nakedmowhawkbaby · 05/03/2009 11:21

HORRAY! Mellors has saved the day!

You can come out now!

Let's go!

amber32002 · 05/03/2009 11:46

There's nothing at all strange about any of the people in this place is there?

daisy99divine · 05/03/2009 11:52

No, of course not, that's why we all feel so at home!
