Picture the scene...

From the edge of every terrace and every step hang brilliantly white stalactites, and you can hear the joyful splashing of the waters of the hot springs as they cascade down over slopes where their flow is impeded only by clumps of oleanders.

Nearby is an oasis of refreshments, in our Pamukkale residence, air conditioned and with white washed generously proportioned rooms, with Mellors at the ready, to offer Turkish Massage to anyone who wishes.

The NMBs are in their element, whereas the bishops seem to have found their speedoes again.

Priest's hole is at the back, in a quiet shaded area, stocked with What Car magazines, Turkish rugs and Turkish delight

stick- I'm not in the south west corner of the county, it would take me over an hour to drive to where you are, I'm about as far from the sea as you can get in Devon.

Devon as a funkier rural Ireland?? I guess in some ways, think Jam & Jerusalem as opposed to Father Ted... Plenty of lentil weaving hippies about if you look for them as well as all the perfectly normal people who work in factories, hotels, shops, schools, farms etc.

stickwithit · 28/08/2011 21:51

Tee you are right, I am lucky to be having a holiday and shouldn't be moaning about the weather. Sorry to hear LCT is having disturbed nights. Do you have any idea why he wakes up? I agree with Thumb though, that by no means all 2 year olds sleep through the night.

I do love Devon, beautiful countryside, stunning beaches, cream teas. Life feels very relaxed here although to be fair I am looking at it through holiday tinted glasses.

AandO hope you manage to track down some slippers. Wednesday feels very early for the start of DS' term, I thought schools usually started during the second week of September Confused.

Thumb, your description Spring emerging where you are sounds lovely. I love that springtime feeling and wish autumn wasn't so close here. What are the seasons like where you are?

Tee2072 · 29/08/2011 07:59

Stick, you are certainly entitled to a moan. I was just moaning about my lack of holiday! But, then again, I don't really like holidays. I like my own bed!

I hope people have nice plans for the bank holiday. Just a regular Monday here with LCT and Mr Tee on their way out the door and me with lots and lots todo!

Here's a Brew and some Biscuits to start your day!

AandO · 29/08/2011 10:57

Oh yes I forgot it was a bank holiday in the UK! But Tee, you will have the bank holiday in Belfast right?

Just read the final few chapters of Charlotte's Web to LittleO. I cried my eyes out! He didn't seem bothered. He is now happily playing Charlotte's Web i the sitting room with his farm, farm animals and a massive plastic spider!

AandO · 29/08/2011 11:00

UniS - It is all very Father Ted around here. I went with my sister to a so called family fun day on Saturday in her small town. I was basically a few stalls, and a bouncy castle. The kids bounced while the parents stood around in the rain, huddling against the cold wind. Miserable! Btw it hailed here a few days back. Yes, hail in August Sad. Anyway, I've never heard of Jam an Jerusalum so don't get the comparison at all Grin, what is it/are they?

Tee2072 · 29/08/2011 11:00

AandO it is indeed a bank holiday. But one that most businesses, including the university where Mr Tee works and LCT's nursery, ignore!

UnSerpentQuiCourt · 29/08/2011 18:43

AandO, not exactly sure which day Wriggle starts, either the 5th or the 6th Blush. Really need to make her a PE bag and start labelling things. Just met some mums at a village fete where I was doing the face painting, who were being totally radical and getting grey socks for their little girls. I have so far refused to buy the socks because they would only be white for the first 20 minutes of their life with us and I am very mean. That makes it harder to do something special for her first day as it is also my first day back. Bleugh.

Wriggle now recovering from a totally heart-broken melt down after I washed off her cute puppy face paint when it was 5.30 and I could not bear her running round barking any more. Bad mummy.

UniS · 29/08/2011 19:42

just trying to find a good episode of J&J to refer you to AO.

The program was filmed in two twons a town about 6 miles from here and the local cheese factory.

UniS · 29/08/2011 19:44
series one ep 1, best credits, future progs rushed them. Every village seems to have a few of these characters for real.
Scout19075 · 29/08/2011 19:55

Hello from holiday. Off to read the news but wanted to share the good news -- one of my Sisters in Law got engaged over the weekend. Grin Celebration Wine anyone?

Scout19075 · 29/08/2011 20:00

Oh, more good news. Despite being slammed by Irene Mom and Dad have had very little water/damage/loss of electricity to their house. Whew.

ComeIntoTheGardenMaud · 29/08/2011 20:01

Yes please, Scout. Shall we break open the Twiglets too?

Lovely to see you, Serpent. I was thinking of you this afternoon when Le Tourbillon came up on my iPod when I was trying to dig out a particularly stubborn fern which had outstayed its welcome in the garden. Be warned - although things may be different where you are - that if you make your child's PE bag you will be marked out as a knit-your-own-lentils eco-hippy. Girl has always been the only child in her class with a homemade PE bag - it seems that even in an area where people have businesses selling homemade bunting, a homemade PE bag is beyond the pale but I don't care.

I never watched J&J but am delirious at the thought of the return of Ab Fab.

amberlight · 29/08/2011 20:04

Scout, hurrah! I'll happily have a Wine. And a twiglet. Been walking round Kew Gardens today with dh and have ended up feeling very Smile

ComeIntoTheGardenMaud · 29/08/2011 20:09

Oooh. I haven't been to Kew for a couple of years. What's good at the moment? ::Looks stern:: And I hope you haven't overtaxed yourself.

Scout19075 · 29/08/2011 20:13

I, too, am in Devon at the moment. It was wet, VERY wet, on our way down and while it hasn't been hot like it has been this week in previous years it's not been terrible, either. Took Toddler onto the beach and in the sea this afternoon. Sea was okay a bit cold to start with until TS got caught off-balance by a wave and after that he wasn't too impressed with the sea. I didn't, however, take him away from the water completely and within minutes he wanted to try again as long as he was holding onto me.

TS is definitely British -- determination to stomp about in the cold sea followed by a good sized scone with cream and jam. He is seriously loving the cold AND cooked breafasts every day and the daily cream teas. He's still teething but does manage breakfast and scones. Wink

Good news on amber's Biscuit. I think, amber, you should write in markers "no, not me" and "yes, this one" on the them so MrSurgeon doesn't get confused. Wink

UniS · 29/08/2011 20:27

ohhh twiglets and cream tea, what a glorious combo.

I made scones this morning, we rounded off lunch with scones, cream and honey. Bliss.

Boy has a home made PE bag, doesn't look tooo out of place in the box. its blue and white check "school frock" material square draw string bag with a small digger patch sewn on to make it more distinctive.

beanandspud · 29/08/2011 20:38

Phew, back from the in-laws. Feeling a bit shattered after a couple of very long car journeys and trying to keep a small person on his 'best behaviour for three days (and avoid breaking antiques and goodness knows what). Was worth it though to see how pleased FIL and MIL were that we had made the effort to go.

Had a therapeutic hour in the garden so now have rhubarb chutney to go with last week's jam.

Amber, it's been years since I went to Kew but it was lovely. Hope you found a scenic bench for a rest!

Enjoy Devon Scout, I have a lot of fond memories of doing exactly was TS is doing.

Tee - did you have a good day?

CMOTdibbler · 29/08/2011 20:42

Mmm cream tea... I will have to make scones again

It was the highlight of our towns calendar today - a fruit based festival. DS enjoyed interrogating people about their vintage cars and then sampling stuff at the farmers market.

beanandspud · 29/08/2011 20:42

Serpent - just read back. We have a few Blue jobs that are exclusively DH's responsiblity (mowing grass, putting the bins out) and a few Pink jobs that are mine (changing beds, cleaning fridge etc.). Most other things are shared. It sounds a bit sad but most of the time it works ok.

I suspect that making a PE bag will almost certainly be a Pink Job!!!

ComeIntoTheGardenMaud · 29/08/2011 20:43

Arf at Scout's ideas for message to MrSurgeon.

::Sets the glitterball spinning::

::Throws end of summer shapes::

Scout19075 · 29/08/2011 20:48

NNNOOOOOO, it's can't be the end of summer already!!

UniS · 29/08/2011 20:54

CMOT - is it that fruit festival time of year already! gosh, only last year we were there with all the nieces and nephews and teddy bears.

I have eaten all teh fruit from my " fruit festival " tree already. it ws yummy. did some garden tidy up today, cleared where peas and broad beans were, need to did it over and get some shallots in I think. Planted a last gasp sowing of lettuce , will see if any come up. Toms are very nice at present and we have far to many runner beans. Sprouts are sprouting and kale is good to cook.

Ahh- must go and roast the rhubarb I pulled today- last of the year I think .Will freeze this lot after roasting.

Scout19075 · 29/08/2011 20:57

MrScout's USA plans seem to have changed (yet again).

ComeIntoTheGardenMaud · 29/08/2011 20:57

There's that feeling in the air, around here at least.

OK, let's pretend we're in California and go riding in .
