Tearoom 25 - Benvenute a Venezia!

1001 replies

thumbwitch · 08/04/2011 00:28

YOu find us this time in a glorious palazzo in Venice, near to St. Mark's square, and on the water. With gondolas and vaporetti in abundance to transport us around to the various sights etc.

The palazzo itself of course has marble floors and fabulous murano chandeliers but aside of that we have the usual distressed chintz comfy sofas, assorted animals, bishops in their corner, priesthole for emergencies and a single solitary aspidistra in a bomb-proof glass cage to protect it from the ravages of a certain Canadian.

All are welcome - drop by for a cuppa, a glass of something stronger and a chat and relax in the safe and kind surroundings here.

Cin cin! Wine

Scout - the 'French school holidays' are staggered. France has three 'zones' (A - C)each having different holiday dates. It is explained quite well here...

about-france.com/school-holidays.htm

Scroll down about 1/2 a page.

The Spring holiday is organised according to pracical dates chosen by education bods not according to when Easter is - I think (and then Easter is simply a long weekend if it isn't in the hols). What else can say? Urrmmm oh yes... and summer holiday is soooo LOVELY AND LONG - YAAAAHOOOO and half terms seem to be always ten days or more!!!

x

Hope this helps!

Brew
UnSerpentQuiCourt · 27/04/2011 18:24

Amber, hoping that the operation is over by now and that they are offering you a Brew.

Was going to rant about our staff meeting today when we were discussing individual children about whom we are concerned and the name of child x came up; very immature, doesn't share, avoids risk taking, not independent, lacks social skills, not popular with the other children.

Colleague A (with 5 children):n He's a typical only child.
Serpent: Actually, he has an older sister.
Colleague B (3 children): But she's much older, so in effect he is an only child.
Serpent: But these problems don't automatically follow. There are many well-balanced, well-socialised only children about.
Colleague A: Where? I've never met any.
Colleague B: (Slowly and carefully, as befits explaining to a junior staff member) Serpent, when a child can't share and has few social skills, that is the typical profile of an only child. That is what they're like.
Serpent: Aaaaaaagh!
Headteacher: Actually, Serpent has an only child.
Both colleagues: We know, but we have to face facts as they are.

Also, on Easter Sunday we went out with SmugMotherOfTwo to a restaurant. Another family with a child of about 2 was sitting nearby. SmugFriend's children immediately went over and started to play with her toys. Child looked anxious. Child's mummy insists that she shares the toys. SmugFriends children start to push her about in her about in her push chair. She tries to peel off their hands. SmugFriend's older daughter tells her off. Small child's lower lip begins to quivers.
SmugFriend: Isn't it funny how mummies even love whiny grizzly little children like that one? Obviously no social skills at all.

However, in view of Amber's news, I realise that a rant about prejudiced and narrow minded mothers of multiples is a great waste of time, and that there are far more important matters.

Tea, I am very envious about the length of French school holidays. Am I right that the school day is longer? (My school does 9.00 to 3.15)

Scout, I don't know how mine became 4! (Although I must admit that I am enjoying 4 more than 18 months, but I would never have believed that at the time.)

MaryBS · 27/04/2011 19:25

Have heard from Amber and it all went well... :)

UnSerpentQuiCourt · 27/04/2011 19:41

Good! Virtual Wine to celebrate ....

Tee2072 · 27/04/2011 19:52

Fantastic news about Amber!

Serp, did you throw your coffee at them?

LCT is asleep. In his own bed. In his own room. By himself........

HerHighnessTheWestCoastLotus · 27/04/2011 20:40

Yay re Amber.
Wine, anyone?

Donki · 27/04/2011 20:59

Hurrah about Amber's news!

Donki · 27/04/2011 21:00

And congratulations to LCT (and Tee)

UnSerpentQuiCourt · 27/04/2011 21:05

Congratulations, LCT!

No point, Tee; that would no doubt have proved that I was deluded about my (only) child. Probably not the worst prejudice held by teachers. What if my child was a traveller, or I was a 'hippy', etc? Black, gay, etc is too obvious for the preconceptions to go unchallenged.

ComeIntoTheGardenMaud · 27/04/2011 21:12

Serpent - You showed commendable fortitude and tolerance. Must be because you have a sibling. [Joke] But seriously, do these supposedly educated and informed people resort to stereotyping the children in other ways? Are all the children reduced to labels? Ugh.

But hooray for Amber, Tee and LCT!

beanandspud · 27/04/2011 21:17

Great news about Amber.

Serpent - I don't know how you stayed so professional. - what narrow-minded comments. I'm not sure I would have been able to keep my mouth shut.

Still on holiday so will join you with a glass Wine. Spent this afternoon at the hospital after stupidly hitting myself in the eye with a key so I am also feeling quite sorry for myself.

UnSerpentQuiCourt · 27/04/2011 21:19

Arnica!!!

Donki · 27/04/2011 21:30

I cheerful moment

Scout19075 · 27/04/2011 22:08

Gosh darn I'm homesick....

Scout19075 · 27/04/2011 22:10

YAY for amber!!!

Good job, LCT! Love, TS.

Serp, I agree, you are much calmer than I might have been.

U5 · 27/04/2011 22:38

Hurrah for Amber, have a Biscuit Biscuit or two.

Working this week. Having to get up early, urrgh. Boy has been back at school 2 days and hes knackered. VVVVV grumpy when collected from CM tonight.

U5 · 27/04/2011 22:49

oopps, random name change, might try it out for size.

oxeye · 28/04/2011 01:12

Serpent you have fortidudinous skills that I have now. Lamping comes to mind!
Amber, yay and well done Biscuit Biscuit
Oxboy back at school, seems very serious and grown up about it and is getting very keen on the Wedding. He has decided he will marry a princess and then One Day Be King....

He has also decided that I must die so OxBloke can marry an unsuitable New Wife thereby affording OxBoy the Wicked Stepmother that seems to be the springboard for so many adventures and tales

I think this shows some admirable Wriggle/Milk like tendencies and makes me quite chuffed....

amberlight · 28/04/2011 08:43

Good morning.

Thank you for the Yays.

It was interesting. For those that haven't seen the FB update on account of us not yet being FB friends, blimey, that was an experience yesterday having the portacath put in. They got me into the room, put the sedative in...nothing. Still wide awake. Put in a bigger dose, nothing at all. It seems sedatives do not work on aspies who are on chemo. Now we know.

So we did a one and a half hour operation using only local anaesthetic. I would describe that as 'interesting' if I had to pick a positive word. Not a lot of sleep 'cos it jolly well hurts, but at least it's in.

I need Brew please. And apologies that I'm not saying anything very useful to people right now - but I am reading it all, honest.

teafortwo · 28/04/2011 14:48

Brew Brew - here I will have one with you, Amber.

Oxboy is 100% DELICIOUS!!!!!

Milk does keep asking us to go away and leave her at home alone because she would really like to live like Pippi Longstocking. I have yet to be asked to die!

We are a bit out of it on the wedding thang. Milk has just understood (thanks to hearing it on the today program this morning) that Wills and Kate are infact REAL. On route to school I showed her an article on them in the free Metro newspaper to reinforce her understanding of this. Milk has decided that she loves them both very very much and wants a mug with them on.

Tee2072 · 28/04/2011 15:34

Afternoon all!

Amber I hope you're okay. I'm not sure interesting is the word I would use!

LCT slept in his own bed until 3am. [proud mummy emoticon] Grin

MrTee and I had a lunch date today as LCT is at daycare and MrTee is off work all week. I, myself, worked half a day today, which is what I usually do on Thursdays! But still took time out for Wegamama and shopping!

Finally a beautiful day here in Belfast so I am hoping LCT spent most of it out in the daycare garden.

amberlight · 28/04/2011 15:44

Yup, I'm always ok thanks. Just in different and sometimes odd ways. Right now it's just 'tired and ok'. Tomorrow it will be 'completely ok' I'd think.

Tea, how wonderful that Milk has decided that she loves them! Bit worried about you trying to eat Oxboy, but I've decided it might be an expression [cgrin]

Tee, yay re the lunch out and shopping!

CMOTdibbler · 28/04/2011 15:57

IME Amber, sedatives are very dependant on your own brain chemistry. They don't work on DH either, but I have an extreme reaction and can't be roused for days.

Just been to look at a car - lovely iridescant blue, Discovery 3 HSE 2.7l with all the toys . Hopefully, it'll be mine next week Grin
