The One-Child Tea Room, version 21... the Hawaiian Islands. Cocktails, anyone?

Welcome everyone to the 21st (!!!) One-Child Tea Room. Not to be misleading, we do have inhabitants who have or are planning more than one! Everyone is welcome.

The usual rules apply: no fisticuffs, or you will be escorted out by Mellors the Hunky Gardener. Depending on your preference, he looks variously like Daniel Craig, George Clooney, David Boreanaz, Gerard Depardieu... I have a feeling we all see something different but whatever we see makes us drool! And considering that this Tea Room is in the Hawaiian Islands, whoever we see is definitely shirtless! :o

Cocktails, non-alcoholic beverages, yummy food that is entirely without fattening effects, and lewd rolls abound in the Tea Room. There is also a full cappucino bar.

This is essentially A Tea Room of Requirement, and we're currently on the lovely sandy beaches of Maui, with beach huts, lounge chairs, cabanas, mango and papaya trees, and of course, lots of coffee directly from Kona.

Pop on in and stay a while. We may all seem a bit mad eccentric but we're very friendly!

Thanks, LaVie! Or do you prefer Techno or Color? I'm never sure....

Tee2072 · 18/01/2011 20:06

Very interesting point of view Techno and Scout. I do see where Thumb is coming from but I also parent, I think, more like you and your husbands. I know my husband takes good care of our son and if he gets a bruise, he gets a bruise, or what have you.

I would be mostly angry that I wasn't told than that it happened.

LaVieEnTechnicolor · 18/01/2011 20:16

I think I prefer Techno (it's what I use myself) because as someone pointed out LaVie could sound a bit like lavvy (not very refined word for a toilet, in case it's not used in the USA) and it's easier to create names for dh and dd.

I don't want to spin the discussion out, Tee, but what Thumb's post stirred up for me were memories of when MissTechno was a roughly similar age and all these issues about differing parenting styles, differing perceptions of risk and how to manage those risks came alive for me. I really do understand where Thumb is coming from. I would be livid about the fibbing and also concerned about the perceived need for fibbing.

UnSerpentQuiCourt · 18/01/2011 20:30

Thumb, I don't want to sound unsympathetic, but since I am the wild, carefree parent (unlikely - I am the world's least exciting person) and DH is Mr H&S and always disapproving, I too have been known to be ... economical with the truth. Although I never actually given a false story. Important thing - they didn't even let MiniThumb wet a hair on his head. They did keep him safe.

Oxeye, Wriggle doesn't really know about new ...

Donki, oops, was quite sure that you were RE, although, come to think of it, that doesn't quite explain your references to laboratories. Hmm

Very envious of all you talented musicians.

Scout19075 · 18/01/2011 20:30

Sorry I've been calling you the wrong name, Techno! Blush

::Wonders: What's the difference between nursery, day care and playgroup?::

Is it too early in the week for cocktails?

thumbdabwitch · 18/01/2011 21:46

Thanks for your thoughts :)

MiniT has been swimming since he was 4m old - he went to babyswimming and we have our own pool here so he is comfortable enough in the water but HATES going under (relic from underwater photography that went on too long). I guess I didn't make the point well - MIl was herself going under water, holding DS above her head - if DH had NOT noticed, they both would have drowned, as of course miniT would have gone straight under when MIL lost consciousness.

There are risks and there are Risks. MiniT gets bumps and scrapes all the time, tis expected, he's a boy! he even gets them when he's with me.ShockWink

But around water, I will not take Risks - things can happen oh so fast. I will not take him into the pool on my own, for example, because I know I am not a good enough swimmer to get to him quickly enough if he jumps in the deep end while I am at the other end. But I am happy for MrT to have him alone in the pool because I know he is a good enough swimmer.

MrT isn't renowned for his fore-thought - there have been several things that have brought me to nervous prostration because of the potential knock-on effects. MIL also seems to have forgotten how different very smnall children are to the teens she last had to deal with. Anyway - no doubt I am being very PFB over it - but the main thing is that miniT is safe and that MrT does now understand my concerns. It won't happen again unless I am there too.

Amazingly, although I should have been incandescent about the lying, and I was angry, I still can't muster the energy because he was so shamefaced, so contrite about it. Bah! what a mess - still, thank God no harm done this time and maybe a salutary lesson for the pair of them.

Techno - apologies here as well for calling you LaVie - I was, in my head, pronouncing it in French so "lavvy" never occurred to me - but am happy to go with your preference. Forgive me if I forget though!

WTF?!?!

UniS · 18/01/2011 22:45

oh oh, the curse of the random strike out. we're all doooooomed, doooomed I tell ye.

Ta for choctail package, just the ticket. I've just had good chin wag phone chat with me best friend.

LaVieEnTechnicolor · 18/01/2011 22:46

Did you use double hyphens anywhere, Scout? They can do straaaange things.

Scout19075 · 18/01/2011 22:50

But, but, you're to double hyphen next to each word.... ::wails: I didn't do that::

Grrr.

Right, medicine, milk, bed. I've noticed a pattern -- if BabyScout doesn't have all of his bedtime milk he wakes up desperate in the middle of the night. I fear he only had half-a-milk before bed.... ARGH.

thumbdabwitch · 18/01/2011 22:53

nope - we've had multi-strike out for at least a week now, if not a fortnight - tis a gift!

LaVieEnTechnicolor · 18/01/2011 23:01

Yes, Scout, if you leave a space between the double hyphens and the first word and then between the last word and the double hyphens, it'll strike out a whole sentence or group of words.

like this

I discovered this by accident earlier this week. Is it a deliberate change, Thumb, or has it always been thus?

thumbdabwitch · 18/01/2011 23:03

tis a deliberate change - you don't need to leave a space it will work just the same without one.

People were asking for it when we got multi-bold and multi-italic.

oxeye · 19/01/2011 00:33

we have multi strike keys?

I have only just got the hand of the Old Ways

Now, since we are being Tecky, I shall pluck uup the courage to ask "what's with the colons ladees?"

and I mean punctuation not irrigation Grin

I do however understand Flying Cocktails well enough

hmm. I am tired and not yet in the swing of work, so also busy and late with deadlines and all I can think about is whether OxBoy has his gym shoes packed for tomorrow. I may have to check

there is a woman asking about training in My Line of Work. I ought to go and respond, but just can't be sort of energised enough to....

right, Abed - up the stairs to Bedfordshire as our Late Great Founder would say Wink

thumbdabwitch · 19/01/2011 00:55

Apparently the :: around things is accepted "action speak" in techno world.

But I don't like it (nor change) so am sticking with . Sorry.

amberlight · 19/01/2011 07:00

Morning all. If someone can pass me a hot drink I'd be grateful. Day of the big tests.

thumbdabwitch · 19/01/2011 08:43

You Will Be Fine - you were for the op, you will be for these tests. Praying for you anyway but You Will Be Fine. :)

UniS · 19/01/2011 10:17

A hanes manual is passed down to teh preist hole.

Morning all. Any one for a bacon buttie to stave off mid morning hunger?

Tee2072 · 19/01/2011 10:35

Would love one, unis, thanks!

amber, what thumb said.

Plans to get out of house early have been scuppered by LCT climbing over his rocking horse and landing on his face. He wore himself out crying and is currently snoozing in my lap. So haircut, for him, moved to after lunch!

oxeye · 19/01/2011 11:24

Amber - best of luck. Dream on the Jag car < prays for a>

Tee poor little man hope he's ok

today Oxboy had his first "don't want to go to school I have tummy ache>
felt mean sending him since he prob does, we've all had a bit of an upset but not enough to stay home hard to assess

I'm off for a driver awareness course to avoid points on licence. I hope they don't ask what I do Grin

UniS · 19/01/2011 11:39

slummy mummy unis has realised that its days and days since boy had a bath. I think I'll stick him bath straight after we get home from school. Keeps being tooooo late to fit one into bedtime routine.

amberlight · 19/01/2011 13:48

Arrgh - tests are mixed results so we are indeed waiting another week for the deciding ones to come back. Consultant (very senior and well respected) would have been sure it was cancer but his needle biopsy thingy says that particular sample of the 2.3cm lump isn't. He either missed with his extensive needle-biopsy-proddings and his many years of experience, or it's something else.
Prayers/thoughts please for 'something else'...
Confused

I've been poked and prodded and filled full 'o holes and it's been quite a morning.
I need tea. Or a hug. Maybe both.
