Tea Room 17 - The Tropical Beach Hut

1000 replies

amberlight · 23/07/2010 14:41

Welcome to the 17th version of the Tea Room. We find ourselves on a tropical beach, with the tea room now in a beach hut on stilts, the waves lapping on the golden sands beneath. Palm trees surround us. Our virtual gardener/beach surfing dude/handyman, Mellors, is here to tend to your every need. He looks like the person of your dreams (male, female or otherwise ). There are of course holidaying Bishops and other leaders of faith, the Camels, the Bison, various guinea pigs, the tea room horses, a life-size cut out of George Clooney, the NMBs (please don't ask me to explain how Mohawk Babies joined us, and a wide variety of other virtual followers. We chat, we relax, we share how life is. All in need of friendship are most welcome. The kettle is on...and the distressed chintz sofa has of course made the journey over. Enjoy.

Hello all: Having been informed of the existence of a Tearoom FB page, I am agog to join, but seeing as I have been AWOL for ages I thought I'd better let you all know that I am a) still alive; b) still wanting to while away my time here with you; but, c) under a horrible deadline (24 October) for an academic project for which I must (by aforesaid date) produce 1 book; 1 database; 2 CDs of documents; 1 detailed financial report.

Aaagh. I asked for an extension because of the pregnancy last year. Nope. Not in the rule book.

Thus I am working hard and have removed MN from my homepages in order not to be distracted. I miss you all, hope you are all well and good, and hope to be back in November. By which time perhaps we can establish ourselves on a spaceship, just for fun.

PS. Spanish is easy-ish, but it has a lot of complicated grammar (but no declensions). There is loads of children's tv in Spanish on Youtube. I know I have watched it. I have no idea how old Baby Scout is, but I expect there is a Spanish version of her fave programme. Watching and listening would really help any classes.

un abrazo (hug) a todos (all)
Catita

meeskamooskamickeyMOUSE · 29/07/2010 15:12

Catita - I sent you a suggestion to join the FB TR - could you just tell me if you got it or if I did it wrong? It's JM btw.
Hope to "see" you soon xox

meeskamooskamickeyMOUSE · 29/07/2010 15:16

Amber - sorry to start the day off swearing but WTF is wrong with some people??? Can we help you in RL in any way?

meeskamooskamickeyMOUSE · 29/07/2010 15:20

Have to get ready for work - thankfully, while busy, today is not as completely crazy as Tuesday. Which I brought entirely upon myself with the exception of an (rather quickly dealt with, thank God) emergency one of my co-workers was having... sometimes it stinks being the boss, when your boss is an inconsiderate bitch and schedules you from 9-5:30 with a measly 30 mins for lunch

Just wanted to quickly say though, was at White Rock beach with JB yesterday and had a blast. Took tons of pics of him on my iPhone, will upload some time today.

(I'm glad we're not abandoning TR 17 for the FB TR )
And I like Catita's suggestion that TR 18 should be a space ship - that would be fun!

ASmallBunchOfFlowers · 29/07/2010 15:34

Lovely to see you again!

amberlight · 29/07/2010 15:40

Catita!!!! Welcome back!!!!!!!!!!

MMMM, no idea what is wrong with people. No need to ride to the rescue - I'm doing OK in getting them to apologise and rethink, but it's just the constant struggle to be treated like a human being.

Ooh I have strange Barbarella visions now!

Glad to see Catita popped back in - I messaged her to let her know about it cos I didn't know how to invite her to it .

So Scout - if you get a request from someone whose first initial is C, then it's likely to be Catita

Am still on a weird plane at the mo - having MN and RL collide again! Most odd. Hairs up on back of necks time all round, I think! But not a bad thing.

teafortwo · 29/07/2010 17:56

We went to see Toy Story 3 yesterday with Milk and Milk's friend.

It is such a rollercoaster of a ride. I laughed really loudly three time, got scared once, sighed longingly twice, cried twice, chair danced once and had to spend a good ten minutes afterwards finding out where Milk's friend had put her 3D glasses and the popcorn...

Buzz somehow along the way becomes a sexy Spanish speaking heart throb. This is all VERY good but left me wondering... in the Spanish film version what language does he speak instead of Spanish? Catita - do you know?

AandO · 29/07/2010 18:00

Wow Tea, that sounds great . I will probably take LittleO to see it on Saturday. I took him to see Shrek (4?) a few weeks back and although I enjoyed the film I thought it was not suitable for a three year old really and won't be taking him to see it again. I think that Toy Story 3 will probably be more appropriate. What do you think Tea? Did you see the new Shrek at all?

teafortwo · 29/07/2010 18:30

We have not seen Shrek... Funnily enough though Milk's friend is a complete classic at getting the wrong idea and rather than standing corrected running whole heartedly with it...

Yesterday she decided that a bandstand was a trampoline, she was a frog who needed kissing and the fountain outside the town hall was a swimming pool that I had to physically stop her from jumping in (this is a running confusion that pre-warning actually adds to).

After the film she said "Thank you for taking me to see Shrek."

Milk went - "But the film we saw was Toy Story."

Milk's friend rolled her eyes. "Perhaps you saw Toy Story but I saw Shrek!"

It depends on your 3yr old and you views, AandO. It does have a fairly dark side to it (the toys end up in a very uncaring playgroup that by night other toys are using as a sort of high security prison [confusion].)

Ontop of that it has a fairly (and very for a 3yr old) complicated and muli-layered story. I think it is good for children's brains to be exposed to complex storylines. I also think that it is the sort of film that anyone can tap into at whatever level they are at. (Kinda like The Simpsons IYSWIM?)

The actual (because there is much night action)'darker bits' didn't seem to bother the girls but I was bothered about them being bothered IYSWIM and I did get my hands ready to cover eyes a few times!

Who I would 100% recommend to go and see the film are the 18 year olds who loved the first ever Toy Story as children and are now packing their bags for uni...

thumbwitch · 29/07/2010 18:37

Oo, I dunno about that, A&O - I've heard it might be a bit much for some little ones. I know miniThumb is younger than LittleO but I'm going to wait for the DVD so I have FFwd control availability, from what I've heard I might need it.

But Tea might think differently?

Scout19075 · 29/07/2010 19:09

I want to go see Toy Story but HubbyScout doesn't want to. I'm thinking of going to one of the CineBabies showings (sound down, lights up) but not sure how BabyScout would be even in a theater like that. Would it be cheeky to go see it while he's at nursery and I'm feeling queasy from the beginnings of my treatments?

UniS · 29/07/2010 19:26

go to flicks while baby scout is at nursery. Much the best option.

Hi All. A large bucket of your favourite cocktail combo awaits you on teh bar. dip in and glug freely.

scout- I have some teeny tiny digger and dumper truck patches for baby scout blanket as a trade. for my contact details either FB message me or googl south west unicycle meets home page and look for a contact e-mail .

Catitainahatita · 29/07/2010 20:42

Ok . Having secretly (I'm hiding from my conscience) looked for the tearoom on FB. I can't find it. Nor can I find the suggestion that Mickeymouse sent me (love the name "hot dog" right back at you, fellow sufferer ).

Do I have the same FB as you lot or is mine a knocked off Mexican version???? HELP SPORTACUS HELP (copyright Kittenito 2010).

T42: I have so far managed to avoid TS3, but I suspect Buzz will either start speaking English -or- carry on in Spanish, depending on the context. When I go, I'll let you know.

ASmallBunchOfFlowers · 29/07/2010 21:07

Catita - If you search FB for the MN tea room, it should materialise. Then you have to grovel apply to Scout for membership. But as she let me in, she's clearly not too rigorous!

Scout19075 · 29/07/2010 21:16

That's what I was thinking. Was feeling guilty, though -- BabyScout is at nursery for six days, during the start of treatment because the side effects are meant to be ugly until I get used to them. So he's going to be with happy/healthy adults and play with other babies while I sleep.

Ooohhh, truck patches! Very cool! I will sew them on BabyScout's blanket at camp. He has quite a collection going for one so young. I will get yours out to you this weekend. I have the Centenary one and an American one to send you.

Bought BabyScout a walking toy today, seeing as he's trying to cruise on the furniture, me, etc. Need to get it set up tonight so he has something new to investigate in the morning.

I could you a soft drink -- would anyone else like one?

Scout19075 · 29/07/2010 21:26

Sorry, crossed lots of posts. Thought I had hit "post" before having my dinner.

I will go in and look at the FB page in a few minutes.

AandO · 29/07/2010 21:33

I looked it up on this website:

www.commonsensemedia.org/movie-reviews

It gives 5 as the age Toy Story 3 should be watched from. It is a really handy website, but very cautious. I thought Shrek 4 was very dark, scenes of ogres chained up and being whipped by bad witches, that type of thing. But that didn't bother LittleO, he thought the scariest part was the dragon breathing fire. I guess those other things might have gone over his head, but still, they are not nice images for him to have seen. Hmm, I'll have a think about it.

When does the treatment start Scout?

Scout19075 · 29/07/2010 21:41

Next Wednesday, the 4th. Blurgh. We're doing taster sessions at nursery on Monday and Tuesday, my friend is watching BabyScout on Wednesday while HubbyScout and I go to the hospital, then BabyScout goes to nursery starting on Thursday for a week and a half(less one day as they didn't have space available). Nervous about the side effects, nervous about leaving BabyScout in nursery, nervous that it won't work. Trying to remain positive! I am a fighter by nature (heck, I wasn't meant to live past the age of 2!) but I feel very flat/defeated for some reason.

AandO · 29/07/2010 21:50

That's not surprising Scout. It's ok for you to feel upset about it.

Is Babyscout a sociable baby? Does the treatment just last the one week? Will you be up and about straight away after that or will it take a while? Will your mom/sister/close friend be around for practical and emotional support? If not, you know we are here, we can do emotional support, and perhaps there are some tea roomers nearby to you?

Scout19075 · 29/07/2010 22:05

Thanks AandO. BabyScout is very social. He's a lovely little boy, really (yes, I am partial, I know). But he really doesn't seem bothered by strangers coming up and talking to him, touching him, etc. He has a big smile for just about everyone. Treatment lasts a year. But the side effects are at their worst the first few weeks. My in-laws are in the Thames Valley and I'm in East Anglia. Not far, but far enough. They have offered to come up on an as-needed basis. As well, so has my unit Guider friend who is BabyScout's adopted Grandma (she's the one taking him while I'm at the hospital as he knows her). We (the three of us) go to camp on the 14th for a full week. Key people at camp know what's going on HubbyScout, Unit Leader Friend and Ass't Leader Friend (who is also unit First Aider) so I can go and hide away if needed. HubbyScout is off from the work the week following camp and then the week after that we're off to Devon for our annual full-family holiday. Lots of people around to help. I'm fortunate that BabyScout is, generally, a happy-chappy baby. I think what's bothering me most about nursery is I used to work in a day care/preschool about 12 years ago (back in the States) and after that experience I swore I'd never put a baby in one if I could help it. I know it's temporary, and I know he won't love me any less for it, but I feel like I'm breaking my promise to myself.

CMOTdibbler · 29/07/2010 22:06

Have you laid in plenty of chocolate pudding Scout ? Tis very good when queasy/sick. Certainly friends who have been on chemo have found it a good food choice

DS scares very easily when films are involved - he wanted to go and see TS3 as his friend had, so we got a DVD of TS2 to see what the result was. He was asking for it to be turned off in under 10 minutes. So no cinema trips yet.

This evening I was regaled with his wedding plans. It started with him finding a penguin ring in his bedroom 'mummy, can you remember where you bought this. Cos I'd like to give one to to tell her I want to marry me'. Then a bit later 'when can I and get married? I can't wait till we're grown up'. 'You have to wear a long blue dress, and you and can be bridesmaids, will wear a big pink dress, and I'll wear a smart suit'

AIBU to be worried that he has it decided now ? He also wanted to know how he and will know when to decide when to have a baby . My attempts at diversion fail totally

Scout19075 · 29/07/2010 22:11

Awww, that's so sweet, CMOT!

Oooh, chocolate pudding. Yummy! It's not chemo but treatments for a blood disorder I was diagnosed with in the final weeks of my pregnancy but surely chocolate pudding is the way to go anyway!

teafortwo · 29/07/2010 22:11

Scout - I am near you from tomorrow night xxx

meeskamooskamickeyMOUSE · 29/07/2010 22:16

Scout, did I miss something? Obviously I did. Treatment for what? Did you tell us? Or are you keeping the "for what" part to yourself? (Which is of course totally fine!)

Hope you'll be ok. ((((((((((((((((((HUGS)))))))))))))))
