Tea Room 17 - The Tropical Beach Hut

1000 replies

amberlight · 23/07/2010 14:41

Welcome to the 17th version of the Tea Room. We find ourselves on a tropical beach, with the tea room now in a beach hut on stilts, the waves lapping on the golden sands beneath. Palm trees surround us. Our virtual gardener/beach surfing dude/handyman, Mellors, is here to tend to your every need. He looks like the person of your dreams (male, female or otherwise ). There are of course holidaying Bishops and other leaders of faith, the Camels, the Bison, various guinea pigs, the tea room horses, a life-size cut out of George Clooney, the NMBs (please don't ask me to explain how Mohawk Babies joined us, and a wide variety of other virtual followers. We chat, we relax, we share how life is. All in need of friendship are most welcome. The kettle is on...and the distressed chintz sofa has of course made the journey over. Enjoy.

oh poor Kittenito that would be such a shame

Scout19075 · 05/08/2010 05:02

Exhaustion + insomnia = not a good combination.

Keeping Kittenito in thoughts and prayers, Catita...

Teas and coffees for those exhausted.

I had 9 days where I was admitted for something - got carted off to a specialist hospital. The trouble there was that, being a non-normal NHS hospital, and one where people were suffering from lack of appetite, weight loss etc - I found it really hard not to put on weight! And that was without partaking of the biscuits at morning tea break and the cake at afternoon tea break... And if you were not on your ward they went looking for you to make sure you had something... Down the line I ended up with tablets that cost £10 each - gave up very rapidly on the ones they tried before that which made my legs twitch - you know the 'falling of a log' twitch you get occasionally when falling asleep - like that every 2 mins or so - enough not to be able to sleep at all! Luckily I have a pharmacist friend who regularly talked me through what it was that they'd given me to try 'this' time!

I could do with losing more than 10% at the moment. And I hate it. But I seem to be able to not lose weight on an unreasonably little amount to eat... To actually average 0.5 - 1lbs loss per week I've got to stick to about 1000 cals, and its so difficult to do that Oh - but if I have a day a bit 'off' I manage to put 3 or 4 lbs on that week....

I don't feel happy with how this morning went. Ds was messing about with breakfast AGAIN. Its the only meal that I really want him to have a good go at - if he doesn't on other meals, its no problem. But why does he have to insist on fiddling with anything he can get his hands on (including his hands), stretching, leaning back on his chair, sticking his arms out, asking questions, telling me things, and messing around with his spoon rather than actually eating it???? It only took 40 mins this morning.

thumbwitch · 05/08/2010 12:59

MT - I don't know but miniThumb is almost as bad at lunch and dinner as mistlechick sounds. He does eat his breakfast ok though - especially his Oatibix, he does love those! He thinks the cranberries are strawberries which helps.

I have to lose weight, I can't bear it any more. I've done another half stone jump (normal for me) in the last month or 2 and I am now teetering over into the next stone - I've already gone over my "I am never going to get that heavy" weight twice, I'm not doing it again! But still no 30 day shred DVD... and no motivation. Someone help meeeee..

Catita - hope Kittenito is ok - ((Hug)) for you all.

Oxeye - re. your question about vits and children - the answer is I actually don't know. If your boy had Ishoos then I would say give it a go - but he is a normal little boy, isn't he? And so long as he eats reasonably well, a good balance of meat, fish, veg, fruit, wholegrains etc. with a full range of colour in the fruit and veg, I would think it would be unnecessary to supplement him. If he is vegan, then supplemental B12 is pretty much necessary. Vegetarian with egg and dairy should be ok; but you might want to consider supplementing with omega 3 fatty acids.

There is a small risk with occasional supplementation - rebound deficit. By which I mean that the body gets used to a higher intake of vits/mins, so allows more of some of them to be excreted - and that this doesn't necessarily stop immediately the supplementation stops. So you get a rebound dip in levels when you stop supplementing. It balances out again after a short while.

If miniThumb were exhibiting signs that indicated to me he wasn't getting his full complement of nutrients, or he wasn't eating properly, I would consider supplementing him. Also if he pooed too much (5+ times a day) I would consider supplementing but also finding a way to reduces that amount of excretion.
HTH!

Catitainahatita · 05/08/2010 16:28

Kittenito is just the same about food, but then he's a general pain to get to do anything that is "necessary" for a little boy's health eg. bathing, cleaning teeth, eating, wearing shoes. I could go on, but I'm sure you all understand completely.

The only thing that I really worry about are his teeth. He has to do it "yo solito" ("me, on my own") and will barely let me brush at all at the end. Am I condemning him to endless dentistry at a tender age???

meeskamooskamickeyMOUSE · 05/08/2010 17:01

Jackbaby's not too happy with me brushing his teeth either but I've been firm enough that he now grudgingly lets me.

Re: vitamins. I've wondered the same and have come to the conclusion that I try to feed JB well enough so not worth the hassle as anything that comes out of a medicine dropper sends him into screaming hysterics. I can hardly blame him. Is it the same in the U.K./ Oz that they do children's medication in such godawful flavours that you practically have to duct tape them into immobility, clamp their mouths open and pinch their noses shut to get them to swallow?

Busy day at work today, may not have time to check in much so (((((HUGS))) to all who need them, esp. Scout and Kittenito. Could do with one myself - I have an app't with the bum doctor in 3 hours (there goes my lunch break ) to find out results of biopsy. That's all I'm going to say, I am trying to cure myself of many character flaws including oversharing. Am still burning with shame that tea recognized me after a name change by virtue of my terrible case of verbal diarrhoea oversharing. Oh, that and the (((HUGS))) - I guess the latter, not so bad... the former... EMBARRASSING!!!

Scout19075 · 05/08/2010 17:29

4M, if you overshared then what the heck have I done?! Don't worry! Hope everything is okay at the doctor!

Cat, hugs from me as well and hope your little one is okay.

Day one of BabyScout's respite nursery seems to have gone well. He beamed at the lead teacher when we walked in this morning so I took that as a positive sign that he was happy. He drank all of his milk, had "very little" of his lunch but it was something he had never had before and in a new place, so not worried/upset about it but ate all of his pudding (yogurt, which he loves, so glad to hear there was something familiar for him), had two naps (only 30-45 minutes, but glad he went down and slept for them!) and had favorite toys. AND they took 10 pictures for me. It took a minute for him to register I was there this afternoon, but then he paid attention and heard me and turned from his toys and beamed -- melted my heart! Very proud of my little man.

Side effects so far not as bad as I feared, but I only started taking everything last night. HubbyScout text me this morning to remind me to take my pills he knows I'm rubbish at remembering until I get into a routine. Have had to email (evil) camp woman to tell her I need to be off-site one day for blood tests and another day (only for a few minutes) to go to the office where the refrigerator is to take medicine. No response yet. MrsGuider has said if the other woman takes any issues with it she'll "put her in her place" strong words from someone who doesn't do confrontation and wouldn't fight certain other things that needed fighting for.

I have started brushing BabyScout's non-existent teeth, in hopes he gets used to the toothbrush. Only once a day, though, to help him get used to it. He likes to chew on the toothbrush I use in the tub, though, but doesn't seem impressed with the one I have for his teeth. Silly Baby!

I am happy with my size, though my shape is a bit funny, despite being 15-20 pounds heavier than when I got married. Have only changed one jeans size since uni (ducks and runs) but the numbers on the scale yesterday shocked me.

Catitainahatita · 05/08/2010 18:49

Don't worry 4M: it's the funy way you do hugs that give you away. Oversharing is another of the TR rules.

Kittenito used to let me brush his teeth. We had a great routine going.... but this has all gone to pot with the "yo solito" attitude. He used to be easy to bathe, he used to eat well.
What can I say?

He's in a full-on "mamitis" phase (it's a Mexican phrase "mami" being "mummy") at the mo. It's got a lot to do with having been at the hospital: he's got scared of going to sleep and waking in the dark, or on his own. He's also quite jealous of Gatita and the bfing. He want to go to sleep with mami too.

Hopefully it will all pass.... the teeth thing may not, but I am not losing hope and teaching him to do it well before lasting damage is done.

meeskamooskamickeyMOUSE · 05/08/2010 19:08

Scout, I waaayyyyy overshared my bum and fanjo issues resulting from JB's birth. More than anybody ever needed to know about me. I'm glad I didn't get turfed out of the Tea Room!!

Catita, why are my (((((*HUGS))))) funny?????

Scout19075 · 05/08/2010 19:45

Catita, how old is Kittenito?

4M, is it enough to make me glad I ended up having a section?

BabyScout refused dinner and only wanted milk, so gave him half a spouty cup/bottle. Then half an hour later wanted to go to bed and had another full (7 oz) bottle. I'm torn between being worried and not.

meeskamooskamickeyMOUSE · 05/08/2010 21:23

Trust me on this - you're not just glad, you're ECSTATIC that you had a section. I only wish I'd had a bloody section.

Do.Not.Get.Me.Started. It will not be pretty. Two and a half years later, I can still get a pretty good rant on.
I'm having a hard time right now because the girl in the office next to mine is pregnant and has chosen to go with the same fucking twat midwife who screwed up my case I had. So in a sense, it's bringing stuff up for me again and I'm having a hard time getting away from it.
Enough about that, I've bored the original Tea Roomers to death with it, so here, how about some Bolly for all who need it?

Why are you sort of worried that BabyScout only wants milk? [thick emoticon]

Scout19075 · 05/08/2010 21:32

I think had BabyScout been allowed to start his own labor he'd have come out very quickly and naturally. He didn't like being induced (got very violent just after my water broke and contractions started in earnest). The pictures of his birth say it all -- "I'm not ready, Mommy! Make them put me back!!!" LOL

Because BabyScout is normally a good little eater. He only had two bites of breakfast and only ate "a little" of his lunch (veggie risotto, which he's never had before and today was the first time he had lunch at nursery). But he was chewing his hand to the point I think he made a finger bleed, so gelled him up and gave him some Calpol and he went to sleep very quickly/easily. Guess it's teeth bothering him -- I wouldn't want to eat if my gums hurt either.

Anyone fancy an ice cream sundae?

UniS · 05/08/2010 21:40

evenig all. abit busy in RL so just a brief pop in tonight. thinking of you.

UniS · 05/08/2010 21:41

evening all. a bit busy in RL so just a brief pop in tonight. thinking of you.

Paid work day today. festival in village all weekend , In laws arrive tomorrow.

CMOTdibbler · 05/08/2010 22:40

Sounds like teeth to me Scout. How about freezing some fruit puree into a lolly for him - cool and soothing.

When I went to pick DS up from nursery today, he and his best friend were sitting in the wendy house, arms round each others waists, nattering. Really cute to see them cuddled up, relaxed like that.

I am about a quarter of my way through nametape sewing on to school uniform. There seems to be a lot of it when you get it all out

meeskamooskamickeyMOUSE · 06/08/2010 01:23

Sounds like BabyScout needs an ice cream sundae. Poor little boo.

oxeye · 06/08/2010 01:26

oh CMOT I sm so sorry I haven't answered your email yet. Iam not in tape naming hell yet becayse Oxboy doesn't start school until January - we don't yet have uniform to put it on! Is best friend starting school with CMOTTiddler too?

Today he announced he wanted to go to a different school [sigh] he is a boy who knows his mind. I have my work cut out to change it round in the next few months

Scout, try not to worry about the feeding. Milk is fine. BabyScout will eat and try things or not. I always let a little bit of new try and then tuop up, yoghurts, grapes, whatever you like

Thumb, interesting about vits., I think I shall steer clear

Teeth - I insist on some brusing after the "have a go hero" bit. Having several tooth brushes help -variety - and we do an orchestra for brushing - up and down like a trumpte, side to side like a flute etc it works for us

4M you have never overshared and I do hope Bum Doc was ok, I feel for you. I am sure it is ahrd with other preggers woman and youjust coming of the ADs and all - can you slip in a little more counseelnig/

Mistle - are you ok?

Catita - I would just give Kittenito as much baby love as possible - I just think ooooo soon he's not going to want to kiss and hug

Scout19075 · 06/08/2010 02:26

We have lots of refrigerated and frozen teethers that sometimes he likes, sometimes not. But the poor little mite didn't even want his yogurt w/fruit at dinner and that's when I knew nothing was going to get in. He woke up an hour ago for his middle-of-the-night feed (usually wakes anywhere from 1-5 a.m.) and only had 4 of his 7, so thinking he tanked up at dinner/bed and just needed a top-up to get him through.

Stupid meds make me drowzy and an insominac at the same time, so when I wake up for BabyScout that's it, I'm done. ARGH.

Catitainahatita · 06/08/2010 03:39

I hope you have managed to get some sleep now Scout.
Another tip on the teething which works with Gatita are carrot sticks kept in the fridge... ice creams etc are a no no over here as in 40 odd degrees it usually has melted all down your tshirt before the child has had any of the benefit.

How are you feeling on the meds?

Kittenito is 2 years 7 months old (tomorrow to be exact).

Oxeye: I'm not complaining about the mamitis really. I secretly like it: usually I'm second best to the adorable papi. It's just that he has to go back to nursery in a week and I anticipate much anguish (he's been away from the best part of a month with all the operation and stuff).

Scout19075 · 06/08/2010 07:53

Yes, thanks, managed to get back to sleep around 4-ish. BabyScout up around 6-ish but back down around 7/7:15, so getting ready for the day.

Will try carrot sticks and frozen fruit. I know he really likes cucumbers as well, teeth pain or not, especially when they're cold, so will need to get some more.

Meds aren't as bad as I thought they were going to be, thanks Catita. I think it's the tired/insomnia that's going to drive me crazy and hope I get to the point where I can sleep again. Sometimes napping when BS does makes me feel worse.

mistlethrush · 06/08/2010 10:37

We got the teethers that went in the fridge - mistlechick found those good - and we had 3 - one in mouth, one being washed and returned to fridge - and one a bit cooler already in the fridge!

Talking of teeth, mistlechick lost his second bottom tooth yesterday. I was really worried when a month or so ago I saw the first bottom tooth coming through as it seemed set so far back from the baby teeth - but that one has moved forwards and is already in line with the baby ones (albeit about 2.5 times as wide - and with lots of bumps along the top too) - the second one is coming through and again looks really far back - but I hope it will just move forwards similarly (and spookily!). He's also got a wobbly top tooth - and again I can see the new one coming up behind. I looked up a thread on here and someone said it was normal, so I stopped thinking I should take him to the dentist for a check! I must say that teeth cleaning was the one thing that we insisted on - didn't always get cooperation, but they always got done - and he worked out that it was SO much easier to cooperate.... Grin

Have a long list of jobs that need doing at the weekend that have to wait until dh is back... Oh - and MiL is coming to stay too...

oxeye · 06/08/2010 12:51

Scout, sounds crazy but we had no teething problems due to wearing amber necklace. May not be your thing

Catita, oh the pang - I have just watched Oxboy going off in the arms of another, lovley Oxpoppins but still I have an urge to run after him and grab him and snuggle and snuggle forever

we went to see Inception - have you seen it? Great film but I howled and howled at the end.... Grin

amberlight · 06/08/2010 12:57

Yup, seen Inception. Weirdly, I understood it Hmm

Too many years spent writing nested computer programs, I expect.

Who's for Soup Du Jour avec les Rolls Tres Lewd?

OP posts:
mistlethrush · 06/08/2010 13:06

Yes please Amber - sounds good - and did I tell you that UniS made special lewd rolls when mistlechick and I met up wtih her and boy - and had a picnic in the conservatory???? Grin

Mistlechick joined me in bed last night at midnight after a bad dream... so I had to go and get his quilt (very thin cot quilt that is still his favourite Blush and the right temperature - unlike his summer weight duvet with the really lovely bright cover.. which is too hot! He's a very cuddly boy too - although we have told him that he should only give kisses on the lips to family members! Grin
