We were eligible for Tax free and 30 free hours. DC just turned 3.
I was made redundant this Mar, DP quit his job this August (so now none of us are in paid employment).

AFAIK there is a grace period for the 30 free hours, we were paying normal rate until this wk (Oct) nursery said the code doesn't work anymore and now they have send us a £2,300 bill for this month (3 days per week PLUS the shortfall for Sep now that apparently we didn't have funding then).

Am I right in there being a grace period for these 30 free hours or will we just have to suck up and pay the below and probably take DC out of nursery ASAP as this is in no way affordable for 2 unemployed ppl!

We are not entitled to UC but DP is on New style JSA (and looking for work but unlikely to find something till 2027 given the current market).

Anyone with any advice would be welcome!

Is the man you call not really a partner your children's father?

Does he pay child maintenance if they are his?

If he's not their father why did you rely on him to fund nursery fees, and why did he stop working when he was paying?

Thanks for asking this.

I can’t work out if her partner/not partner is the Father of the kid.

I hope this is answered.

in Mar this year so it's been a while. Am on a course atm planning to look for work after it finishes in Dec - did try for a few months this year but no luck after sending 40 applications - just got 1 interview (I agree it's not that many so got a way to go).

My only advice is to talk to each and every agency you can until they find you a job.

So he quit his job you got made redundant, both not working but still want someone else to look after you child.

Thats not how parenting works is it.

Haha exactly. Why on earth do you think the tax payer should pay for your childcare when neither of you works?

Lifeispeach · 06/10/2026 16:59

This post is everything that’s wrong with this country.

ProudCat · 06/10/2026 17:00

Debt is a civil matter.

You need to come to some sort of agreement with the nursery around a schedule for paying this debt. If you don't, they can issue against you in small claims and the court will direct the schedule. This will also negatively impact your credit rating.

Essentially, you owe someone money and you need to pay it back.

He is NOT her husband.

They do not live together.

He is not her partner.

He is her boyfriend.

You missed off that he is the kids dad so time for him to step up and look after the child himself or get a job.

Some truth in it.

Children went to nursery in the 60s and 70s when most mothers were sah. They were originally designed for preschool education and preparing them for school.

I think he kind of has to be or why else would she have used his still working until August as why her child should have free hours

and this still happens! Her child will have access to 15 free hours from January. But not now

Given it's now the 6th October, there's a good chance nursery filed the September claim to their local government during Sept and has just heard back that this DC isn't eligible for Sept or Oct. Most places charge a month in advance so OP is now liable for the underpayments in Sept and Oct.

Think they may only be going by her change too as they don't live together. Sounds a complicated situation and depends on the information the nursery was given.

GloryDias · 06/10/2026 17:14

You would have had emailed reminders to renew your code before it ran out, it would have needed renewing before the end of August.

She not clear on anything right now.

I’m aghast at OP’s post.
Are they really saying that they can’t have their child at home because looking for work is a full time job while also saying that they had applied for forty jobs since march???
And they don’t understand that by not living together they can’t both claim for the same situation?
Sorry if I have it wrong, but this poster seems to be living in an alternative universe.
you are either one household living together or you’re assessed on one.
obviously you can’t live in two places and expect to be judged as if you are one singular unit

And who is paying for the running of the 2 households. Sounds very complicated.

Sometimes I really do just come on here for the comments.

whats her DP doing with his days?

Why indeed!

They don't live together and he's not 'really' her partner, she posted.

The amount she owes is because she stopped work in March and the free hours would stop by the end of August or sooner if she stopped work in early March.

It's all online, so she should have understood her obligations but maybe hoped the nursery wouldn't follow up what was owed.

Mumofoneandone · 06/10/2026 12:56

When did the nursery let you know about the additional charges that were being incurred?
Because surely if there's a change, they should alert you straight away, not let you acrue a large debt and then tell you! Could CA advise?

Or maybe, just maybe, feckless parents should take a bit or responsibility and stop expecting everyone else to spoon feed them. How exactly does the nursery know what OP and her partners employment status is? The nursery havent changed anything. OP has had a change in her circumstances it was up to her to find out what the impact would be.

SpunkyOchreSnake · 06/10/2026 17:49

If neither of you are working why does your child need to be in nursery? Surely you can manage to look after her between you?!

Mh67 · 06/10/2026 17:54

Remember if you take child out there is no guarantee they will have a spot a for them when 15 hr funding is sorted. There are huge waiting lists and their spot will.be filled immediately

whatsgoingonhey · 06/10/2026 18:01

So you’ve been out of a job for 6 or 7 months. I don’t understand why your child needs to be in childcare. The government won’t pay, it needs to come out of your pocket.

Exactly. Same as you have to notify child benefit to stop or it’s on you to pay back any overpayments. The nursery is there to wipe the kids’ arses not the parents.

Russiandollsaresofullofthemselves · 06/10/2026 18:05

why the hell would your partner quit when you didn’t have a job? I was made redundant in June and can’t find a new job, if my husband did that I think I would start divorce proceedings!

Toodarktooearly · 06/10/2026 18:17

chirrupybird · 06/10/2026 13:10

Why doesn't he live with you? Running two households with neither of you working is surely foolish, And I agree that if neither of you are working or likely to be working for a while why do you need childcare? Don't most people use it because they are working and can't look after their DC themselves? If you just prefer your child to be in nursery you have to pay.

Edited

So she can get more benefits

Jade9114 · 06/10/2026 18:21

You would still get 15 hours so it wouldn’t be that much surely ?
