I put you on a pedestal, you put me on the pill

New England - Kirsty Maccoll

laurielee · 10/01/2010 16:22

One breaks my body and the other breaks my soul

La Cienga Just Smiled - Ryan Adams

Don't know why I love this so much, but it gets me every time!

mosschops30 · 10/01/2010 16:55

i got soul .... but im not a soldier
(The Killers - All these things that ive done)

While everyones lost, the battle is won, with all these things that ive done
(same as above)

out where the dreams are high, out where the wind dont blow, out here the good girls die, and the sky wont snow
(The Killers - A Dustland Fairytale)

And so we scream from behind the door, say whats mine is mine and not yours, we may have too much but we'll take our chances cos god's stopped keeping score
(George Michael - Praying for time)

LittleWhiteWolf · 10/01/2010 17:58

Havent read every page so I hope I'm not repeating anything!

I am seeing a lot of The Smiths appreciation going on yay!

Anything by Fall Out Boy, particularly:

I'm coming apart at the seams/pitching myself for leads in other peoples dreams/now buzz, buzz, buzz/doc theres a hole where something was

So hum hallelujah, just off the key of reason/I thought I loved you it was just how you looked in the light/ a teenage vow in a parking lot/ til tonight do us part/ i sing the blues and swallow them too

I'm watching you two from the closet/ wishing to be the friction in your jeans

And anything by Joni Mitchell, just to honour both my loves!

I'm a lonely painter/ I live in a box of paints/ I'm frightened by the devil/ and I'm drawn to those ones that ain't afraid

Now its just another show/ you leave em laughing when you go/ and if you can dont let them know/ dont give yourself away

lets have a round for these freaks and these soldiers/ a round for these friends of mind/ lets have another round for the bright red devil/ who keeps me in this tourist town

Oh so so many songs move and inspire me, from dylan to paolo nutini,

but this will always be wriiten in my soul and move me beyond words....

''i heard there was a secret chord
that david played and it pleased the lord
but you don't really care for music, do you
well it goes like this the fourth, the fifth
the minor fall and the major lift
the baffled king composing hallelujah

hallelujah...

well your faith was strong but you needed proof
you saw her bathing on the roof
her beauty and the moonlight overthrew you
she tied you to her kitchen chair
she broke your throne and she cut your hair
and from your lips she drew the hallelujah

hallelujah...

baby i've been here before
i've seen this room and i've walked this floor
i used to live alone before i knew you
i've seen your flag on the marble arch
but love is not a victory march
it's a cold and it's a broken hallelujah

hallelujah...

well there was a time when you let me know
what's really going on below
but now you never show that to me do you
but remember when i moved in you
and the holy dove was moving too
and every breath we drew was hallelujah

well, maybe there's a god above
but all i've ever learned from love
was how to shoot somebody who outdrew you
it's not a cry that you hear at night
it's not somebody who's seen the light
it's a cold and it's a broken hallelujah''

And it doesn't make me sad even though reading the lyrics written down, it has a sadness to it.

And this by the Chillis, especially the last verse....

Can't stop addicted to the shin dig
Cop top he says I'm gonna win big
Choose not a life of imitation
Distant cousin to the reservation
Defunkt the pistol that you pay for
This punk the feeling that you stay for
In time I want to be your best friend
Eastside love is living on the westend
Knock out but boy you better come to
Don't die you know the truth is some do
Go write your message on the pavement
Burnin' so bright I wonder what the wave meant
White heat is screaming in the jungle
Complete the motion if you stumble
Go ask the dust for any answers
Come back strong with 50 belly dancers

[Chorus:]
The world I love
The tears I drop
To be part of
The wave can't stop
Ever wonder if it's all for you
The world I love
The trains I hop
To be part of
The wave can't stop
Come and tell me when it's time to

Sweetheart is bleeding in the snowcone
So smart she's leading me to ozone
Music the great communicator
Use two sticks to make it in the nature
I'll get you into penetration
The gender of a generation
The birth of every other nation
Worth your weight the gold of meditation
This chapter's going to be a close one
Smoke rings I know your going to blow one
All on a spaceship persevering
Use my hands for everything but steering
Can't stop the spirits when they need you
Mop tops are happy when they feed you
J. Butterfly is in the treetop
Birds that blow the meaning into bebop

[Repeat Chorus]

Wait a minute I'm passing out
Win or lose just like you
Far more shocking
Than anything i ever knew
How about you
10 more reasons
Why i need somebody new just like you
Far more shocking than anything I ever knew
Right on cue

Can't stop addicted to the shin dig
Cop top he says I'm gonna win big
Choose not a life of imitation
Distant cousin to the reservation
Defunkt the pistol that you pay for
This punk the feeling that you stay for
In time I want to be your best friend
Eastside love is living on the westend
Knock out but boy you better come to
Don't die you know the truth is some do
Go write your message on the pavement
Burnin' so bright I wonder what the wave meant

Kick start the golden generator
Sweet talk but don't intimidate her
Can't stop the gods from engineering
Feel no need for any interfering
Your image in the dictionary
This life is more than ordinary
Can I get 2 maybe even 3 of these
Come from space
To teach you of the pliedes
Can't stop the spirits when they need you
This life is more than just a read thru

perapera · 10/01/2010 18:39

what about me - well,
I'll find someone
that's not going cheap in the sales
a nice little housewife
who'll give me a steady life
and won't keep going off the rails

take your hands off me
I don't belong to you, you see
take a look at my face for the last time
I never knew you
you never knew me
say hello, goodbye

perapera · 10/01/2010 18:40

You don't own me, I'm not just one of your many toys
You don't own me, don't say I can't go with other boys

And don't tell me what to do
And don't tell me what to say
And please, when I go out with you
Don't put me on display, 'cause

You don't own me, don't try to change me in any way
You don't own me, don't tie me down 'cause I'd never stay

and the rest of 'you don't own me' by Lesley Gore

JaceyBee · 10/01/2010 21:18

'Elvis are you out there somewhere
Looking like a happy man?
In the snow with Rosebud
And king of the mountain'

Written about Elvis obv but I also like to think it could be for Michael Jackson.

Or anything else by Kate Bush really. Also, Kurt Cobain, Bowie and Morrissey are all amazing lyricists.

We should have a worst lyrics thread too - I nominate anything by the cranberries!

CrackersInBed · 11/01/2010 10:35

Feel her body rise, when I kiss her mouth (Sting, Fields of Gold) always sounds so passionate

Well I'll be damned, here comes your ghost again (Joan Baez) just makes me smile

grouchyoscar · 11/01/2010 11:32

Please put your hangs down and stop raising your voice
I would do too if you gave me a choice

grouchyoscar · 11/01/2010 11:33

or hands even

MattBellamysMuse · 11/01/2010 17:47

I love these lyrics:

So I'm there
Charging around with a juggernaut brow
Overdraft, speeches and deadlines to make
Cramming commitments like cats in a sack
Telephone burn and a purposeful gait

When out of a doorway the tentacles stretch
Of a song that I know
And the world moves in slow-mo
Straight to my head
like the first cigarette of the day

And it's you, and it's May
And we're sleeping through the day
And I'm five years ago
And three thousand miles away

Do I have
time? A man of my calibre
Stood in the street like a sleepwalking teenager
No.
And I dealt with this years ago
I took a hammer to every memento
But image on image like beads on a rosary
pulled through my head as the music takes hold
and the sickener hits; I can work till I break
but I love the bones of you
That, I will never escape

And it's you, and it's May
And we're sleeping through the day
And I'm five years ago
And three thousand miles away

And I can't move my arm
Through the fear that you will wake
And I'm five years ago
And three thousand miles away

From The Bones Of You by Elbow.

MattBellamysMuse · 11/01/2010 17:57

Snap mumofmonsters.
My boys refuse to believe that song is not actually called Sleep Twitch.

lurkingdad · 11/01/2010 21:49

My favourite lines because they always bring emotion with them are.

He's Two And She's Four, And You Know They Adore You
So How Can I Tell Them You've Changed Your Mind

Dixie Chicks - You Were Mine

Right away Mary Anne flew in from Atlanta
On a red eye midnight flight

Dixie Chicks - Goodbye Earl

Crying all alone under the stands
Was a piccolo player in the marching band

Dixie Chicks - Travellin Soldier

They probably don't work so well out of context, but within the story of the song they always get me.

MattBellamysMuse · 11/01/2010 21:55

You a Dixie Chicks fan by any chance?

lurkingdad · 12/01/2010 19:25

MattBellamysmuse What gives you that idea?
Dixie Chicks and Kate Rusby on constantly play round here

DramaInPyjamas · 05/03/2010 16:12

Thought I would bring this thread back to life. Love hearing where people get inspiration from. Mines is..

I know I believe in nothing, but it is my nothing.
-Faster, Manic Street Preachers

You'll always find a great quote in a Manics song.

Badinfluence · 05/03/2010 16:25

I love this sort of thread. I've got a 2hr playlist on my ipod of songs that mean something to me in some way. A couple of choice quotes from there are...

And does it make you sad
To find yourself alone
And does it make you mad
To find that I have grown
I'll bet it hurts so bad
To see the strength that I have shown
When you answer the door pick up the phone
You wont find me cause I'm not coming home

  • Not Coming Home, Maroon 5

Things get damaged
Things get broken
I thought we managed
But words left unspoken
Left us so brittle
There was so little left to give
Angels with silver wings
Shouldn't know suffering
I wish I could take the pain for you

Precious - Depeche Mode

Much as I love these lyrics I wouldn't have them tatooed across my back like a girl I saw at their gig the other day!

StarryEyedandLaughing · 14/03/2010 16:59

starry eyed and laughing

chickensaresafehere · 14/03/2010 17:13

I know someday you'll have a beautiful life,
I know you'll be a star,
In somebody else's sky,
Oh why,why can't it be mine.
Pearl Jam - Black

chickensaresafehere · 14/03/2010 17:20

Oh & this, from Audioslave which Chris Cornell wrote about his daughter. . .
Settle down now and sit with me
Let me tell you how this all came to be
A yellow flower with your petals to the air
And flying on paper wings that brought you here
Summer rolls on in the lazy hours
An ether dream way
Of hummingbirds and clouds
Midnight swims in the cool back waves
And you in my arms as it rolls away

Boredofboden · 14/03/2010 17:30

I'd have a belly full of children, you'd have a belly full of drink.

Juliet Turner- Take the money and run.

Bucharest · 14/03/2010 17:40

Don't tell me of love everlasting, and other sad dreams,
I don't want to hear,
Just tell me of passionate strangers who rescue each other, from a lifetime of care,
Cos if love means forever expecting nothing in return,
Then I hope I'll be given another whole lifetime to learn.

Joan Baez. (probably still a bit chinny about Bob binning her)

Boredofboden · 14/03/2010 17:44

It's the same thing night on night
Who's wrong baby who's right
Another fight and I slam the door on
Another battle in our dirty little war

Bruce Springsteen- One Step up

Narketta · 14/03/2010 18:01

I love all of the lyrics in this song its called wonderful by Gary Go.

The person that you were has died
You've lost the sparkle in your eyes
You fell for life into its traps
Now you wanna bridge the gaps
Now you wanna bridge the gaps
Now you want that person back
Uhhh uuuhh

And all your ammunition's gone
Run out of fuel to carry on
You don't know what you wanna do
You've got no pull to pull you through

Say "I am"
Say "I am"
Say "I am wonderful"

Say "I am"
Say "I am"
Say "I am wonderful"

If what you've lost cannot be found
And the weight of the world weighs you down
No longer with the will to fly
You stop to let it pass you by
Don't stop to let it pass you by
You gotta look yourself in the eye

Say "I am"
Say "I am"
Say "I am wonderful"
Oh you are

Say "I am"
Say "I am"
Say "I am wonderful"

Cause we are all miracles
wrapped up in chemicals
We are incredible
Don't take it for granted, no
We are all miracles
