At a risk of sounding rather morbid, what music would you want played at your funeral?

I sadly went to a funeral yesterday and it made me think of writing out what I want, should I die.

There is so much music that means something to me, but what would you want playing at your send off?

I am thinking of:

Al Green - Ain't No Sunshine
Robbie Williams - Feel
Evanescence - My Immortal
Israel Kamakawiwo'ole - Somewhere Over The Rainbow
Westlife - You Raise Me Up

saltire - don't usually like pipes but that is very nice ! I love Flower of Scotland too

MavisGrind · 03/08/2008 13:00

If I still have pre-school age children (you know, Bus/Mavis type interface) I've decided that I'd quite like the carousel music from In the Night Garden as I roll through the curtain. Quite jolly and keeps the kids happy.

MaryAnnSingleton · 03/08/2008 13:01

that's very sweet music, I like it !

cremolafoam · 03/08/2008 13:51

Faure's Requiem, the whole way through, preferably sung live by a choir in a cathedral setting, but I don't think that will ever happen!

Shame, because it is the most uplifting and comforting piece of music associated with death that I know.

ooh was just talking about this on Friday. Mine's all planned.
First will be:

The Killers - All These Things That Ive Done
followed by
Dolly Parton - 9 to 5 (white label dance remix)

at which point everyone will have a boogy, then get trashed on vodka at the party

littleboo · 03/08/2008 18:27

I'd like a gospel choir with Jools holland - "i wish I knew how it felt to be free"

WideWebWitch · 03/08/2008 18:29

Given that I don't really listen to music and never have it on in the house or car my funeral would be silent except for some poetry. I wouldn't mind people singing a couple of hymns I suppose but no idea what.

blowsy · 03/08/2008 18:55

Thanks cremolafoam for the Smetana link! I'm back at school!

MaryAnnSingleton · 03/08/2008 20:36

yes, we listened to Vlatva at school too

Human League - Together in Electric Dreams

I only knew you for a while
I never saw your smile
til it was time to go
Time to go away (time to go away)
Sometimes its hard to recognise
Love comes as a surprise
And its too late
Its just too late to stay
Too late to stay

Well always be together However far it seems (love never ends) Well always be together
Together in electric dreams

Because the friendship that you gave
Has taught me to be brave
No matter where I go i`ll never find a better prize
(find a better prize)
Though youre miles and miles away
I see you every day I dont have to try
I just close my eyes, I close my eyes

Well always be together
However far it seems
(love never ends)
Well always be together
Together in electric dreams

my fav song is al greens lets stay together. Its a song that was out when i got married.Still marriedI think it would freak my hubby and grown up children out as if i died first they would think i was coming to get hubby and take him with me.There are so many songs that i would like played at my funeral that means they would never get away and have the first drink.Still love celines i am every thing i am because you loved me.As i said in previous thread that is special to me so they can decide.i will be looking down on them smiling if they get it wrong.I do like rem every body hurts.Prob not a good song at a funeral hope it would bring a smile to them.

I want 'There She Goes' by the LAs, just as my coffin goes through the curtain - with intructions for everyone to sing it and wave me off.

Also want I'll Be your Shelter by the Housemartins and Dont Get Lost in Heaven by Gorillaz.

At my Dad's funeral we had Time to Say Goodbye sung by Andrea Bocelli. Spine-tinglingly sad. He was carried in to Scotland the Brave on pipes. Cheesy but fitting.

At my Grandad's funeral they were playing his favourite jazz stuff, one of which was 'Who's Sorry Now'. my Mum and her sisters were sobbing and chuckling in equal measure.

Ledodgy · 05/08/2008 08:31

I went to my mum's cousin's husbands funeral. I'd never met him before but they played My lovers gone By Dido and I was bawling!

my lovers gone
his boots no longer by my door
he left at dawn
and as Islept i felt him go return no more
i will not watch the ocean
my lovers gone
no earthy ships will ever bring him home again
bring him home again
my lovers gone
i know that kiss wil be my last
no home his song
the tune upon his lips has passed i sing alone
while i watch the ocean
my lovers gone
no earhly ships will ever bring him home again
bring him home again

Wish you were here - Pink Floyd.

EssieW · 05/08/2008 08:46

nimrod is beautiful, also finlandia so would probably hope someone chose those.

At MIL funeral a month ago we had All you need is love (Beatles) as the final song - was a perfect finish to the ceremony.

The website is a really good idea Quint...

derelicte · 05/08/2008 08:59

Bright Eyes rofl

and nina simone - here comes the sun

Heifer · 05/08/2008 09:05

I want traditional hymes at me funeral not pop songs.

Having had to endure both parents funerals I actually think that having a song that is very personal to them is very hard on everyone else.

My mum wanted to play some country and western at my dads crem (after trad church service) and it was really unbearable having to listen to a song that was so personal to him.

At my mums she just wanted traditional church hymes and it was much easier to endure.

So I will pick something nice, but not something that the people greiving would necessarily link to me.

belcantavinissima · 05/08/2008 09:10

my friend had never forget by take that played at her funeral. i cant heart it now without getting goosebumps and a tear in my eye

ImPinkThereforeImSpam · 05/08/2008 11:10

Vivaldi. Nulla in Mundo Pax Sincera The most uplifting piece of music ever!
