I was listening to 'Way to Blue' in the car today, and thinking: I love the acoustic guitar, and I love the English-folky vibe. But I farking hate Nick Drake's voice so it spoils it a bit.

Anyone have any recommendations?

Also classical acoustic guitar stuff, like the Orange Joooooth thingy.

I theng yew.

The Indigo Girls are worth a listen.

winestein · 27/06/2008 22:01

hey Wissle! How are you? No need to apologise. Poor old doggie might not be with us as far away as next week, in which case I will most certainly need to go on walks with borrowed dogs. Just let me know when you are ready

Oh, I love Ella. I singalong-a-Songbook very badly but with great enthusiasm.

Tell you what, if you can indentify the following track for me I will be forever grateful: doleful female jazz vocal, very deep voice, Christmas record, very slow song with bits of 'Good King Wenceslas' popping up. Was on the Starbucks in-house Christmas selection about five years ago, but whenever I asked the the barristas what it was they didn't know.

LOL at drugs winey. Is your dog unwell?

Scott Matthews - yes someone suggested him, I like that one, will seek it out.

I loved 'Trinity Sessions' - is that the best Cowboy Junkies or are there others?

Can you recommend any Elliot Smith and Indigo Girls? I'm both doleful AND lazy.

ok, it's not folk or classical, but this Lauryn Hill track is spine-tingling as are the rest of her tracks from her MTV unplugged album - try peace of mind or I find it hard to say

don't know if it's your thing, policywonk but I'm loving it at the moment

auntyspan · 27/06/2008 22:09

Have a listen to Angus & Julia Stone.

Quite folky but beautiful lyrics.

hth x

Wisteria · 27/06/2008 22:10

You need Black Eyed Man, track 12 - will try and google it for a clip!

The Caution Horses is lovely as well.

Also try Kate Rusby and Martha Tilston if you like that sort of thing

StrangeTown · 27/06/2008 22:10

Indians/Nomads/Saints.

Can listen to clips here Try tracks 7 & 9.

Wisteria · 27/06/2008 22:10

Passing Stranger (Scott Matthews) is a fantastic album

StrangeTown · 27/06/2008 22:12

Harpo - that Lauryn Hill stuff is amazing, her album is one of my all time favourites, but this is great.

policywonk · 27/06/2008 22:13

I like those Harpo - I'm not a huge soul fan but those remind me of Stevie Wonder.

and policywonk, I reckon the track you're after might be Nina Simone, Little Girl Blue.

Not might, must be!

sorry, can't find a better clip

Wisteria · 27/06/2008 22:16

here I think

policywonk · 27/06/2008 22:18

Oh yes, Indigo Girls sound great. God, this is going to be expensive.

compliment gratefully accepted, policywonk

mawbroon · 27/06/2008 22:33

This is the only one that I have heard and I really like it.

I used to put it on to calm down my 4yo mindee when he was in a mood! Worked a treat.

winestein · 27/06/2008 22:40

Well done Harpo - I was on the trail - if you google Starbucks Wenceslas it comes up with Nina Simone Little Boy Blue - I didn't find that remix though!

Poor, poor Ozzy Bear . It's been a long battle and I can't help him fight it anymore... my dear dog's bladder has ceased to function properly due to neurolgical damage and so the prospect is not good.

PS I saw the Indigo Girls live at one of the music festivals in my yoof. They were Grrreat!

Wisteria · 27/06/2008 22:42

mailed you Wine

(well I haven't actually mailed you any wine obviously)

policywonk · 27/06/2008 22:47

Oh dear winestein, I am sorry. I still remember the day when we had to have our childhood dog put down (border collie, completely nuts). Horrible business. Hope you're OK.

Right, I've just spent £30 on Amazon, including something called 'The Only Guitar Album You'll Ever Need' . Someone hide my wallet, quick.

Wisteria · 27/06/2008 22:48

What did you buy?

policywonk · 27/06/2008 22:53

Indigo Girls, Scott Matthews, Chris Newman, aforementioned Guitar album, full version of Concierto de Aranjuez... think that was it... wanted to buy more but got a bit frightened by how easily I'd racked up £30!

policywonk · 27/06/2008 22:55

Oh and Rodrigo y Gabriela
