Swifties, who would like to join me in the countdown to Life of a Showgirl?

I woke up this morning to a slew of messages from excited Swiftie friends telling me about the new album, I hadn't dared to hope it would be here so soon and now I am ridiculously excited and have my vinyl copy pre-ordered already!
My husband, also a Swiftie, had warned me not to get my hopes up ahead of the release of TTPD last year as he couldn't see how it could possibly live up to her previous albums, fortunately he was completely wrong and I consider it to be among her finest work, one of the best albums I've ever heard! I therefore have no reservations about getting excited about the new album. It will also be the first album since our baby was born, though I THINK she's more of a folklore and evermore girl so she may not be quite as enthused by the possibility of more Max Martin and Shellback collaborations as we are.
Even though we won't be getting Reputation TV now, I hope the vault tracks still see the light of day, when you consider the quality of the 1989 vault tracks just imagine what the Reputations ones must be like! I have high hopes that this new album might have been inspired from work that had already begun on Reputation TV.
Anyway, just wanted to come on here and share my excitement with other Swifties. What are you hoping or expecting from TS12?

I don’t think it’s being a hater to criticise Taylor Swift. She isn’t above fair and thoughtful criticism, she is a grown woman choosing to be a public figure - she’s mature enough to realise that means some people will disagree with some choices. I don’t know enough to determine if the situation with Charlie XCX is punching down, but I don’t think @SoScarletItWas is in the wrong to start a conversation about it. I don’t think anything said has been a bad faith attack, which is sort of how I define hate. With TTPD I felt Taylor went too far by bringing up North in thanK you aIMee, not everyone felt the same, but to me that crossed a line. That’s not to say that Charlie and Kim have always been delightful to Taylor, but people can have opinions as to whether her response was proportional/mature/appropriate… It’s precisely because I’m a fan that I care about how Taylor conducts herself and that I can feel more disappointed when her behaviour feels off to me.

APurpleSquirrel · 04/10/2025 16:31

I’ve listened the the new album on & off since yesterday. I too usually need a settling in period to find what I like. Stand out tracks for me are Ophelia, Elizabeth Taylor & Showgirl. But I really dislike Wood & not overly keen on Father Figure - though I get what she’s doing with it.
Wood I feel is really crass, & considering the age of much of her fan base, a bit inappropriate. Obviously she’s a grown woman, can say what she likes, & it’s all innuendo but that track is just not for me.

@Everlore hoping to get on the TS bandwagon here, which album would be best for a newbie like me??

It was 1989 that I first got into. Then went to Red. DD likes the earlier stuff like Fearless and Speak Now.

You didn’t ask me, but it’s really hard to say as everyone has a different favourite album. For me they’re Red, Reputation, and Folklore. People suggest listening to the Eras Tour playlist as that gives you a taste of everything then listen to the full project of the one you most connect with. That’s not a bad call, it includes hits from each Era but those tend to be the singles and more surface level choices (still great) but not fan favourites and deep cuts which are typically buried within the album. I pick a ballad, a banger, and honourable mentions for each era, which I have put below incase you want to explore based on what this particular Swiftie enjoys 😂😂😂

Taylor Swift 🦋
Banger - Picture to Burn
Ballad - Cold as You
Honourable Mention - Tim McGraw/Marys Song

Fearless
Banger - Change
Ballad - White Horse
Honourable Mention - Fearless/Forever and Always piano version

Speak Now ☔️
Banger - Long Live
Ballad - Back to December
Honourable Mention - Enchanted/Haunted/Last Kiss

Red 🍁
Banger - State of Grace
Ballad - All Too Well
Honourable Mention - The Moment I Knew/Sad Beautiful Tragic

1989 🌃
Banger - Blank Space
Ballad - Clean
Honourable Mention - I Know Places/All You Had To Do Was Stay

Reputation 🐍
Banger - Getaway Car
Ballad - New Years Day
Honourable Mention - I Did Something Bad/Call It What You Want

Lover💗
Banger - Death By A Thousand Cuts
Ballad - Cornelia Street
Honourable Mention - Cruel Summer/Afterglow/Daylight

Folklore 🪩
Banger - august
Ballad - illicit affairs
Honourable Mention - exile/hoax

Evermore 🥂
Banger - no body, no crime
Ballad - ’tis the damn season
Honourable Mention - champagne problems/tolerate it/cowboy like me

Midnights 🌌
Banger - Maroon

I think that, for a total newbie, listening to 1989 would give you a perfect intro to 'pop queen' Taylor, and Folklore is equally perfect for 'introspective poet' Taylor.

Or, do what I did - go on a really long drive, set your Spotify to just play 'Taylor Swift' and see what comes up. Every album is really so different, and her catalogue is so huge, you'll find plenty to love. I wish I was on my discovery journey again!

CornflakeGirlsClub · 04/10/2025 16:47

I love catty, schadenfreude-ey Tay. Some of her best work. Grin.

I think channelling your inner bitch through music / art etc is actually pretty healthy. A huge chunk of the population vent their bile on social media or go around being in-person arseholes …Taylor writes catchy pop songs.

Also - I’m not an obsessed Swiftie by any stretch of the imagination (I’m too old for all that) but I can’t stand the ‘bland, blonde, boring Barbie’ take on her. Lazy. Makes me shake my head and mutter:

Dayummmmmmm….its 7am

😜

SummaLuvin · 04/10/2025 16:48

@TheAlcott I feel the opposite!!! I’m very grateful I’ve been a Swiftie over half my life, the idea of starting to explore her music now would entirely overwhelm me. I have a playlist that is her entire catalogue in chronological order- it’s 280 songs and over 18 hours long 💀

She’s gone abit heavy on the Botox on Graham Norton. I’ve never noticed before.

I thought that too, it made her look different but I couldn't put my finger on what specifically was different

Funny, isn't it? I'm still a new fan really, and it makes me laugh to think that I didn't even know what 'Taylor's Version' meant at the beginning 😆

I was 33 when she released Debut; a teenage country music singer just wasn't on my indie / punk/ alt-rock radar at all...

Wirdle · 04/10/2025 17:04

I've been a fan since red, I love that it still had hints of country. Was too busy during the pandemic for the sister albums so those passed me by and even catching up with those 2 feels overwhelming!

EmeraldRoulette · 04/10/2025 17:07

@NewDayNewColour i'm an original Swiftie and I too would be overwhelmed by trying to start listening to her music. I've been here for 19 years!

I'm going to say start with Lover, which kinda puts you in the middle. And then you can see what you like more. I'm much more of a person than the ballad person.

If you want to start with a music video, I would suggest "The Man" and that gives you an idea of her creative range with the videos. And do watch to the end. None of it will have been a surprise to her fans, but if you don't know her, it might be.

The early stuff is much more sweet and country. 1989 is generally considered the album that was pure pop without country. That's probably still my favourite. But how can I have a favourite in this huge body of work?

I think a lot of people got into her work with Folklore and Evermore. They are my least favourites. I like them, I'm not thrilled about having to try and rank her work. Also the fact that they came out during lockdown may have impacted how I feel about them.

I was 33 when she released Debut; a teenage country music singer just wasn't on my indie / punk/ alt-rock radar at all...

I was 30 when Debut came out, had just had my second baby so was out of the music loop anyway and being a lifelong hiphop fan there isn’t a chance in hell I’d have listened to or cared about her music . The only country I liked was ‘Jolene’. No interest in pop music after the age of about 12.

She sort of wafted around in the back of my consciousness as the girl Kanye interrupted and who had a song called ‘Shake it up/out/off’ or summat…

But people change 😀

Properly got into Taylor last year. Too late for tickets to Eras grrrrrrr

( I also love Olivia R, but draw the line at Charlie XCX I’m afraid…)

My most listened to Spotify playlists over the past year are a compilation of my favourite Taylor songs and an epic ‘Golden Era of Hiphop’ playlist. And I own it. 😆

SoScarletItWas · 04/10/2025 19:21

Karmaisagod · 04/10/2025 15:52

@SoScarletItWas Yes, you are coming across as a bit of a hater. Are you sure you're a fan? I find it interesting how easy people find it to dismiss meanness towards Taylor. Calling someone a boring Barbie and reportedly rejoicing in them being ghosted by your husband's bandmate does indeed say much more about the insecurities of the name caller than anything else. And "Barbie" is well within her rights to issue whatever retort she sees fit, on her own terms and timing. What kind of crybaby fucks around, finds out, then whinges on about lateness or "punching down"? Please.

I’m a fan on my terms, not a blinkered ‘anything an artist does is by default brilliant’ and I’m not moved by TLOAS this far. I’ve defended her to people who say she only writes break-up songs or high school songs (like she needs my defence).

We can all have a conversation about the art and the artist and hold different views, just like we all find different eras that resonate most with us. I’m used to being on my own as my favourite album is Midnights (3am edition) which is when I first really took much notice.

Karmaisagod · 04/10/2025 21:29

I've not said everything Taylor does is brilliant. Remarks about the grace or timeliness of a - by all accounts -thoroughly well earned clap back, and unfavourable comparisons with other artists' clap backs, appear unfanlike to me, as well as unsupportive (given the apparent background in this particular case and, more broadly, all the aggro she's had over the years), and unproductive.

I am happy to disagree with others on this, just as I am happy with many people not liking Wood, which currently remains a firm favourite. But I don't feel moved to comment on anyone's opinions about the songs or album, because I agree that taste and opinions are a completely personal matter.

It is also my opinion that her revenge songs are some of her funniest and most entertaining, and long may they keep coming.

Everlore · 05/10/2025 09:01

So sorry for taking so long to come back to this thread, but, embarrassingly, I forgot I posted it! Here are my comments on the new album I posted elsewhere!
After a busy and exciting weekend of Swiftie events in honour of the release of the new album, I am ready to give my initial thoughts. Since it is quite short, especially for a TS album, I have listened to it multiple times and honestly, I adore it. There isn't a single track that I don't love and several of them are instant classics, I am completely on board with this new era and really cannot fathom why critics have been so negative, I really don't know what they were expecting. There are some sweet love songs and some really sassy songs too and also lovely bittersweet moments like Ruin the Friendship. I think some people have been shocked by the fact the lyrics are a little more sexually explicit than is typical for TS but it is hardly gratuitous and she is a thirty-five year old woman who is at perfect liberty to write about relationships in a mature way if she wishes to. I don't have a problem when Sabrina Carpenter or Chappell Roan do it so why should it be an issue for Taylor?
Anyway, at the moment at least, my favourite tracks on the new album are The Fate of Ophelia, Elizabeth Taylor, Father Figure, Actually Romantic, Cancelled and Wi$hli$t, but, as I said, there isn't a single track on here I don't think is brilliant, truly all killer no filler!

OP posts:
Everlore · 05/10/2025 09:13

My thoughts on the alleged Charli XCX track. I do like Charli, though obviously she is not remotely in Taylor's class for me, and Actually Romantic is only speculated to be about her, but honestly, I have no problem with it. I love the song, I think the lyrics are funny and sassy, saucy but hardly mean-spirited. My lovely husband, who is a fellow Swiftie and I have been in deep discussions with each other and with friends about the album since Friday. We disagreed strongly about TTPD, I have come to view it as ranking amongst her finest work while my husband thinks it is mediocre and over-long. With that in mind, he is much more on-board with the new album. I managed to listen to it before him and I predicted that he would be annoyed by Actually Romantic, I based this assumption on the fact that Who's Afraid Of Little Old Me (a song I absolutely adore) was one of his least favourites on TTPD. He described it as one of the songs where she really had to let things drop because she had won already, so I thought he'd have a similar reaction to Actually Romantic. However, I was pleasantly surprised to hear that he actually loved it, he liked that it was fun and cheeky rather than over-dramatic, his criticism of WAOLOM. We are also both big fans of Cancelled, not a diss track really but rumoured to be about Blake Lively, love the lyrics and it's giving strong Reputation vibes which is always a good thing!

clipboardz · 05/10/2025 09:32

Anyone know when we can buy individual songs?

CornflakeGirlsClub · 05/10/2025 10:13

The Fate of Ophelia is a proper banger. Can’t stop singing it.

Love Father Figure and Life of a Showgirl too, so far.

No bad songs on this album. It’s been a fast grower. Need to give it a rest today, though. My DH is sick of hearing it already 😀

Everlore · 05/10/2025 11:03

Apologies for this epic post, I've been writing down my thoughts on this for weeks in preparation for the new album and this is the culmination!
I am really not sure how to answer the question about where to start listening to TS' back catalogue, I'm not sure that chronology is really the best guide and I think the best starter album will vary from person to person. I truly believe there is a TS album to appeal to most tastes so your best introduction to her music might be best informed by your existing music tastes.
On a purely personal level, I find it impossible to choose a single favourite album. What I have always found so remarkable about Taylor Swift is that she is simultaneously prolific and produces music of a consistently extremely high standard, a very rare combination.
With this in mind, the fact that I consider five of her albums to be perfect, utterly without flaws, is a testament to her incredible body of work as is the fact that there is not one single album of hers that I do not love with all my heart.
The five albums that I consider to be perfection are Reputation, folklore, evermore, Midnights and The Tortured Poets Department. I have arranged these here in order of date released so as not to give any hierarchy to my list as I love all of these five masterpieces equally. Each one is an incredible feat of song-writing and I feel really showcase Taylor's greatest skill, her amazing lyric-writing. In my opinion, she is the best lyricist in pop music history. evermore may have a slight edge over folklore, but I really couldn't call it I don't think. I should also add that I think it is really important to include all of the bonus Midnights tracks from the various editions when considering Midnights as a piece of work, since these are extraordinary too, the same could be said of the three bonus tracks spread between folklore and evermore. It seems silly to pick favourites from any of these albums as I consider them to be flawless. I cannot recommend any of her albums highly enough but, these five in particular, I would recommend to anyone wanting to embark on their TS journey!
Next on my list would be Lover. In my opinion, Lover contains some of the greatest songs TS has ever released, I am thinking particularly Cornelia Street, The Archer, Miss Americana, Death By A Thousand Cuts, I Think He Knows, False God and Cruel Summer. The only reason it ranks slightly below my big five is because it is, perhaps, a little more uneven than them, but still an outstanding album by any standards.
Next comes 1989. Of course 1989 is an unbelievable pop masterpiece,a glittering mirrorball of pop beauty and of course I adore every second of it but, for whatever reason, though it also contains some of my favourite TS songs, it doesn't quite make my top five. Maybe I have just heard Shake It Off and Bad Blood too many times, though they are still great songs. It goes without saying that you must listen to the definitive Taylor's Version of the album with the astounding bonus tracks!
My favourites on 1989 are Is It Over Now?, This Love, Style, I Wish You Would, Slut!, I Know Places, Blank Space, Out of The Woods, Clean, Say Don't Go, New Romantics, Suburban Legends and Now That We Don't Talk.
Next comes Speak Now. Is it controversial that I would place this slightly above Red? Maybe it is, but it is how I feel subjectively about this album which I think is just beautiful. My husband says it is over-long but I don't agree with that. There are some really wonderful songs on here and I think it marks a really pivotal moment in her career. Once again, please make sure to listen to the TV with the vault tracks!
Favourites from Speak Now: Sparks Fly, The Story Of Us, Back To December, Electric Touch, Castles Crumbling, Enchanted, Long Live, Better Than Revenge, Haunted and I Can See You.
Next is Red. It goes without saying that I love Red, probably the album that catapulted her to global stardom before 1989 made her a bona fide superstar. It is only a little below Speak Now for me because Speak Now just resonates more with me for some reason.
Favourite tracks on Red: All Too Well (10 minute version, naturally!), Holy Ground, The Last Time, Red, Starlight, Forever Winter, Girl At Home, Message In A Bottle, Begin Again, We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together and The Very First Night.
My penultimate choice is self-titled debut. I think this is an utterly delightful album full of charming songs. As I've said previously, I think TS is a peerless lyricist and, even though the lyrics on this debut, released when she was sixteen, are less sophisticated than her later efforts, I maintain all the hallmarks of Taylor's lyrical genius can be glimpsed here. It's just a really lovely album to listen to.
My favourite tracks on Taylor Swift are I'm Only Me When I'm With You, Should've Said No, Picture To Burn, Our Song and Tim McGraw.
Last, but definitely not least, is Fearless. I obviously love Fearless, not quite sure why it's slightly below the debut for me. No good reason really. It also marks out Taylor as a distinctly pop artist. There are still some country trappings but they are far less prominent than on debut.
My favourite tracks on Fearless are Love Story, Mr Perfectly Fine, The Way I Loved You, I'm Only Me When I'm With You, Hey Stephen, The Other Side of The Door, Fearless, Forever and Always, jump Then Fall and Come In With The Rain.
I'm not sure where The Life of A Showgirl will rank yet, I need to spend some more time getting to know it but, so far, I'm loving every second of it! It took me a while to properly become acquainted with TTPD, all thirty-one glorious tracks of it, and now I consider it amongst her best work, so I have high hopes for TLOAS!

OP posts:
TheAlcott · 05/10/2025 11:53

@Everlore, I salute you, great posts! Your album listing matches mine, actually. I adore Speak Now and it's definitely above Red for me, and Fearless is my least favourite - or rather the record I reach for less often than anything else. But I agree, it's all testament to the incredible consistency of her songwriting, even when genre-hopping.

As I thought it would, TLOASG has really begun to settle into its groove for me. It's a really fun, sparkly, slightly silly (but also really clever), loved-up, hooky, danceable record. And God knows, we could all do with some of that these days.... Brava, TayTay!

well, I mean, the fact that it's called Elizabeth Taylor. Probably some historical links. I really love the line "be my NY when Hollywood hates me". But the Elizabeth reference is probably part of showbiz lore that I don't know.

I suppose the obvious comparison with Taylor Swift is that Elizabeth Taylor had a lot of partners (married 8 times I think?) and there was a lot of press interest and speculation in her love life.

Portofino is where Richard Burton proposed to ET one of the times (she married him twice).

I think the “tell me for real do you think it’s forever” is like she’s wondering did ET think all her relationships were forever. Is TS comparing herself to her, thinking “at the time, I thought they were all forever, did ET think the same”

White diamonds was the name of ET’s perfume line. And she was known for a large jewellery collection, including Cartier.

TS also referenced ET in “Ready for it” with the line “you can be my jailer, Burton to this Taylor” (not a great endorsement, she married him twice but also divorced him twice!)

Also the “all my white diamonds and lovers are forever, in the papers, on the screens and in their minds” is how all her relationships are recorded for perpetuity, people linked to her forever (another similarly with Ready For It where she says “touch me and you’ll never be alone”). Something a lot of people remember about Elizabeth Taylor is just that she married a bunch of times, including twice to the same man. That’s what’s lasted in people’s minds.
