Daughter says musical instruments are for men in pop music - how do I prove her wrong?

My daughter play a the guitar and electric guitar.

I was trying to think of really good female electric guitar players to act as role models and actually struggled (my bad). Men however, Clapton, Hendrix, Marr etc. The list goes on. In fact when I watch bands it always seems to be be men on supporting instruments generally.

Modern pop music seems to equate women with good looks/sex appeal/ singing and there isn't much variation. Taylor Swift, Sabrina Carpenter , Arianna Grande, Tate McRae etc. etc. However the more heavy weight bands in pop cukture, The Beatles, Stones, Queen, Bowie are all male.

I am now seeing classical music as the genre where you have true gender equality and opportunities so I am trying to get my daughter to see at least a classical concert for this reason (as well as the music being brilliant). Am I wrong in this view??

Watch Taylor Swift's Eras concert on Disney before you write her off. Also absolutely nothing wrong with being pretty and talented. Ariana Grande plays French horn and piano as well as having an impressive vocal range. Sabrina Carpenter plays guitar, ukelele, drums, piano and bass. Tate McRae plays piano.
I would say before labelling young pretty performers as just sex appeal, take some time to find out how they developed their craft. Equally singing is using the voice as an instrument and takes years of hard work to hone.

Christine McVie was singer, songwriter, musician, and for several years the only woman in Fleetwood Mac. She did a lot of the heavy lifting for the band in that period even though she didn't want to be the frontwoman.

Declan McKenna’s guitarist is a woman

chapel Roan’s band are all women ( her lyrics are a bit spicy depending on your DD’s age)

Blarn · 31/12/2024 08:54

Also Beyonce has an amazing group of women playing instruments for her live shows.

It's a shame they don't show this side of themselves more though

Taylor plays piano and guitar, Conan gray had an all female band on his latest tour, six the musical has an all female band on stage,

mitogoshigg · 31/12/2024 08:57

Anyway Taylor Swift plays guitar live on stage and plays piano as does lady gaga. Crucially the most successful female artists are involved in production and write.

Taylor does though, it's just society that writes them off for being attractive

squashyhat · 31/12/2024 08:57

Country and Americana are great genres for female musicians, although many are of course not as well known as Taylor Swift! Sheryl Crow, Sarah Zimmermann from Striking Matches, Kezia Gill...

Everlore · 31/12/2024 08:59

Taylor Swift plays both guitar and piano and writes her own songs, some of my favourite sections of the Eras tour film are where she's performing the acoustic sets live, just her voice and guitar or piano, just magical.

RabbitsEatPancakes · 31/12/2024 09:07

White stripes and Babyshambles both had female drummers.

Checkthemeaning · 31/12/2024 09:08

I'd like to recommend Aldous Harding who is incredible. Also Amy Winehouse was on stage with her guitar a lot during the Frank era.

Sharlene Spiteri plays both guitar and piano and is absolutely phenomenal.

Enko · 31/12/2024 09:14

There was all.female Danish Rockband called "Shit and Chanel" (later Shit & Chalou as Chanel threatened to sue) they did some amazing songs but I think all in Danish. Could.be worth her looking them up though.

Two of the members Anne Linnet and Lis Sørensen have had huge success in Danish music industry are both household names.

Superfrog3 · 31/12/2024 09:15

I think you're daughter is right there are a lot less but that doesn't mean she can't do it. Gender stereotypes and roles are changing all the time and the limitations on women are always changing, if your daughter wants to be a pop star who plays the guitar I'm here for it and she should follow her dreams! Plus then my daughter/ possible granddaughters has an idol to follow 💖

BloodyHellBob · 31/12/2024 09:15

Not sure if Sheryl Crow has been mentioned yet, she plays guitar.

Sheila E is an amazing drummer and singer who collaborated and toured with Prince.

Tori Amos is a great pianist.

They do show this side - regularly. It's the media that doesn't so if you're only going to skim these artists you'll miss it entirely. Taylor swift has a guitar for all her early stuff, an acoustic set in her Eras tour and plays in some of the others sets on that tour too.

Also the 4 bands you've listed for pop culture are from 40 plus years ago too so it looks like you're going back to the past for male inspiration as well 😂😂😂

cossette · 31/12/2024 09:19

Slightly left field - but get her to check out YouTube videos of the musical SIX. They have a band on stage and it is always female only. They have drummer, bass guitar, guitar and keyboards.

CrashThere · 31/12/2024 09:19

The Beatles, Stones, Queen, Bowie are all male.
Average age?
