I'm a big fan of Midnight Oil, which I've rattled on about many a time.
Also like INXS, The Saints, Goanna, Redgum, Paul Kelly, Spy vs Spy, Men at Work (mainly for Colin Hays voice). Recently discovered Alice Sky, William Crichton and Missy Higgins.
Who else might I like? I'm more into rock than ballads and whilst Kylie is great at reinvention, she's not quite my thing.

There are soooo many from the 80s/90s which are a similar vibe to the first few on your list. Noiseworks, Icehouse, Angels, Hoodoo Gurus, Divinyls come to mind. Silverchair too. Gosh I could go on and on!

ImBoilingJackie · 11/11/2023 13:22

I'd forgotten about Icehouse. Please do keep recommending!

Amyl and the Sniffers, based in Melbourne. Very punk feel, absolutely banging live. The singer is Amy Taylor who totally goes for it.

(I hate the name a bit, but love the band iykwim.)

Hunters and Collectors, Powderfinger

Lds1 · 11/11/2023 14:02

Airbourne

trashcansinatra · 11/11/2023 14:16

Powder finger, Alex Lloyd, Ben Lee, Killing Heidi. Not so rocky, but if you like Missy Higgins you might like The Waifs (they are one of of all time favourite bands)

ImBoilingJackie · 11/11/2023 15:41

This is great, thank you all. I do have one song by Amyl and the Sniffers on a Spotify playlist, but loads to expand on.

I saw Baby Animals live at the Corner Hotel last weekend, they were still amazing.

Porridgeislife · 11/11/2023 15:46

Jet is worth a look.

theyoungishman · 11/11/2023 15:50

TastesLikeStrawberriesOnASummerEvening · 11/11/2023 15:58

I've heard of them, but not listened to them. I know MO fans often reference them so will definitely take a listen.

I listened to them a lot when I lived in Oz. Triple J radio station is great for new Australian music.

Can I tune into triple j in the UK? I think there used to be triple M in the nineties, which I listened to whilst travelling in Aus.

Try the abc.net.au website and see if it allows you to click through to JJJ to listen either live or stream past shows.

It's all very current music though, you won't hear a lot in the style of the bands you mentioned in your OP. It's also indie/alternative whereas the bands you listed you liked are more mainstream. The Double J station is Triple J for Gen Xers Grin

Each year Triple J produces a Hottest 100 list which you should be able to listen to on Spotify if you want to go back to a different era. It's not all Aus music, but you'll probably find some stuff you haven't heard before.
