Broken's Grade 4 Piano Thread

Broken11Girl · 10/07/2017 01:50

Hello! I felt I was making the general music chat thread all about me, so would move my ramblings to a thread of my own. I may be being egotistical. Advice, support and Wine / Gin / Brew from the lovely musical ladies I already talk to and anyone else appreciated and much needed!
I played the piano (and clarinet) as a kid/ teen, never felt like a natural musician, especially pianist, but loved it. Got grade 5 clarinet (on second attempt Blush ) I returned to piano in April on my cheap Argos keyboard, and had the insane ambitious idea to do grade 4. Said exam is on Thursday.
I used a piano in my local community centre for a while but had to get an actual piano. I have terrible credit Grin but the credit union finally agreed to a loan and my digital piano came home about 3 weeks ago.

I have struggled, quite honestly, to the point where 2 weeks ago my teacher felt I didn't know the scales, lacked regular pulse in my playing and basically wouldn't pass. Last week, much hard work later, she was amazed quite impressed and feels I will definitely pass. I was all set to continue practicing my ass off.
However, the headphones broke off in the jack of my piano, and despite trying everything on YouTube, and raiding Robert Dyas, I can't get the broken off part out. I will be phoning the unnamed for now company in the morning to see if they can repair or replace look out for an angry AIBU if not.

I really needed the couple of days' practice, so very Sad right now. I did some silent scales practice, thanks for the idea Alexandra, and have been using the old keyboard for now - lucky I hadn't got around to selling it.

Scales are now there after Cote-like many hours of practice. I was quite discouraged by how much harder it is to remember them all as an adult opposed to a teen, but have got to the point where muscle memory kicked in now. Some of them are a bit slower than the recommended speed, some I can do faster, as long as they're correct and have a pulse...guessing the examiner won't sit there with a metronome and mark me down for going slightly less than minim=52.

Aural is my weakest point. I can do the clapping and features stuff but can't sing. I mean, literally can't. I heard someone describe it as not knowing how to play the instrument that is their vocal cords. I have improved, have been trying to sing along to anything, whatever I put on cds/ iTunes, even TV theme tunes my Family Guy after a Wine is amusing and belting out tunes from Les Mis, all to my cat's disgust. I have made progress, can more or less carry a tune with someone to sing along to. I have all the apps and can sort of do the sight singing, may not get all the notes but am not miles away, but the singing back a phrase still eludes me. I think I will just accept I won't do well - by my calculations it's still possible to pass without passing aural. as you get 7 marks just for having a try. I'm also useless at sight-reading, but will try to just keep going and make up notes if necessary to keep the rhythm.

Pieces - Haydn's minuet and trip from Sonata in A flat major, Ninette's Musette by George Nevada, and Uzbuna by Bruno Bjeliniski. The Haydn is probably the best. Ninette's Musette is the most challenging, with pedalling and generally, but have worked hardest on it - after all the struggle, it's probably my favourite now. Uzbuna is fine, love it as it's quirky and bouncy, teacher even said it was full of life.

I have been dealing with a lot including physical and mental health issues and music has been such a sanctuary.

Nerves are my main worry, going to try to go in there and even enjoy it Shock whatever happens, I'm glad I did it, despite my many complaints indicating otherwise.

So down.
I will fail unless I pull it out now with little over 3 weeks to go. I don't have the energy. Grade 5 piano is probably too challenging. I'm not getting enough clarinet time in. There's the stupid little exercises (mini pieces) for piano and orchestral extracts for clarinet and the aural, although free from singing, is demanding.
2 exams was a stupid idea.
Wondering why tf I did this.

Broken it's a very tall order to do two exams in one session - I'm not surprised you're fed up. How about postponing the G5 piano to next term? After all, you're doing this for you!

Broken11Girl · 04/03/2018 23:08

It is. I'm feeling a bit better now after a lot of work. I am indeed doing it for me, so won't stress too much, can only do my best.

Just over a week to go, eeeeeek.
Feeling very wobbly again.
Still struggling to get piano pieces mistake-free. Only just added ornaments (Scarlatti) and pedal (the other two). The stupid little mini pieces called technical exercises should die I can stumble through. Scales are pretty good. Aural is ok.
I'm doing much less work for clarinet although a grade higher, pieces fine although need more practice with accompaniment, having rehearsal with accompanist on Weds. Orchestral extracts ok, one has evil rhythms, dotted minim tied to quaver then sextuplet then quaver then dotted semiquaver AAAARGH but can almost sightread the other two. Not worried about sightreading. Aural ok, watched great video on YT explaining hearing modulations earlier.
It's a lot to learn, anyone who thinks Trinity is earlier can f off.

Easier

Feeling overwhelmed with exams and everything else in my life. Want the next week and a half to be over tbh. Sad

Just listening to said extract with evil rhythms and realised I was trying to play it more than twice as fast as necessary - no wonder I struggled GrinGrinGrinAngrySadWine

Bet that's a huge relief! You're doing great - good luck with the rehearsal.
Don't think Trinity is easier at all by the way - I looked at their syllabus!

Broken11Girl · 22/03/2018 02:40

Thanks Loose.
Accompanist is lovely. Rehearsal was terrible, couldn't get the rhythms.

Exams were terrible.

Examiner was lovely, very interactive unlike ABRSM ones who sit stonily, we had some chats. I hope he felt sorry enough for me to pass me but doubt he could justify it.

Piano:
Scales - meh, mostly fine, odd little stumble and am not sure I followed the instructions as to legato or staccato, p or f etc correctly due to nerves.
Exercises - luckily didn't get the fast fiddly one, just about adequate but some slips.
Probably just passed this section.

Piece 1 - super definite fail. Had to restart. Missed bits, hesitations, errors. I had worked so hard on the ending but messed up the finger pedalling.

Piece 2 - too slow, the odd stumble, realised horrifically I got a rhythm wrong.

Piece 3 - probably the least awful but still hesitations

Musical knowledge - so most of the questions were easy, what key is the piece in etc (you are asked about your pieces btw), style and period which you can choose your favourite piece to talk about which was the Scarlatti. So I started to go on about how he was a contemporary of Bach but his music is very different and examiner said they were born in the same year, as was Handel, which was my pet fact that I was about to say! So I just agreed but he probably thought I was faking.

Aural - definite fail, I got the time signature wrong (they give you a copy of the piece later) said 4/4 but it was 3/4 Aaaaargh Angry grade 1 kiddies can get that right. Cadence I am fairly sure I was right but paranoid he misheard a perfect cadence as imperfect. No idea about the changes to the piece (you get a copy), total guess.

Clarinet:

Piece 1 - the odd tiny stumble or note didn't quite come out, Angry at myself as it was the best piece and I played it fine when practicing

Piece 2 - not bad until the end, even more furious at myself as I messed up the ending which is a long high trill, somehow got the wrong notes - like maybe a 5th too low - have never done that before, must have placed a finger wrong but no idea how - unlike some other instruments you don't generally get over or undertones, just a squawk or nothing if you do that Confused no idea what happened.

Piece 3 - probably least awful, hesitations and the highest note didn't come out despite having done so perfectly when warming up. (Equally the high trill at the end of piece 2 would have had I actually played it).

Orchestral extracts - awful. Examiner mentioned that one was from Beethoven symphony 4, then hummed a bit and I didn't recognise it, wasn't the theme I think of but should've just agreed, think I looked blank as he joked it must be his singing. Then he informed me that Fürst Igor means Prince Igor, I said I didn't know that Hmm who is so ignorant. Anyway, I barely got through either.

Aural - maybe ok. Time correct this time, dynamics and articulation I know were ok, other features obvious but true (I said quite fast tempo and can't remember what else). Modulation no idea if I was right. Confident of one of the 2 changes.

So utter mess. Awaiting news of fails.

Well you were very brave to do one exam, let alone two! Fingers crossed you get pleasant surprises!
I'm sure it went better than you think.Cake

Broken11Girl · 30/06/2018 13:38

Done with all this. I'm terrible.
Sad

What's up Broken?

Broken11Girl · 25/07/2018 07:22

Just fed up. Don't feel I'm a good musician. I hear of people getting merits and distinctions, but I can barely pass...if that...had some bad results. Sad

OP posts:
NeverEverAnythingEver · 27/07/2018 20:12

I missed this post.

I don't think it should be about exam results. Do you enjoy playing? If you do, continue. If you don't, drop it.

I never did very well in music exams either but I love playing. I don't care what the neighbours say ...

NeverEverAnythingEver · 27/07/2018 20:13

But I am sorry you are feeling down. Sad

LooseAtTheSeams · 28/07/2018 06:54

Definitely don't let exam results spoil your enjoyment. Ignore the exams. The best I ever manage is a pass and if I do one more exam it will be the last one!

CoteDAzur · 30/07/2018 22:14

I was terrible in the last exam I did, as well. I came to a complete stop after some fumbled notes and just went to the end of the piece Blush

I'm sure you weren't as bad as that!

(The second piece was good so I passed. Miserably.)

As never said, it's all about whether if not you enjoy it!

Broken11Girl · 10/08/2018 00:49

Aw thanks all of you, feel a bit better knowing I'm not the only one. Flowers
Cote yup that's pretty much what I did in one of the pieces in my recent g5!
I do enjoy playing. Have been playing lots of pieces since my exams. Am not putting myself through it again any time soon.
