Broken's Grade 4 Piano Thread

Broken11Girl · 10/07/2017 01:50

Hello! I felt I was making the general music chat thread all about me, so would move my ramblings to a thread of my own. I may be being egotistical. Advice, support and Wine / Gin / Brew from the lovely musical ladies I already talk to and anyone else appreciated and much needed!
I played the piano (and clarinet) as a kid/ teen, never felt like a natural musician, especially pianist, but loved it. Got grade 5 clarinet (on second attempt Blush ) I returned to piano in April on my cheap Argos keyboard, and had the insane ambitious idea to do grade 4. Said exam is on Thursday.
I used a piano in my local community centre for a while but had to get an actual piano. I have terrible credit Grin but the credit union finally agreed to a loan and my digital piano came home about 3 weeks ago.

I have struggled, quite honestly, to the point where 2 weeks ago my teacher felt I didn't know the scales, lacked regular pulse in my playing and basically wouldn't pass. Last week, much hard work later, she was amazed quite impressed and feels I will definitely pass. I was all set to continue practicing my ass off.
However, the headphones broke off in the jack of my piano, and despite trying everything on YouTube, and raiding Robert Dyas, I can't get the broken off part out. I will be phoning the unnamed for now company in the morning to see if they can repair or replace look out for an angry AIBU if not.

I really needed the couple of days' practice, so very Sad right now. I did some silent scales practice, thanks for the idea Alexandra, and have been using the old keyboard for now - lucky I hadn't got around to selling it.

Scales are now there after Cote-like many hours of practice. I was quite discouraged by how much harder it is to remember them all as an adult opposed to a teen, but have got to the point where muscle memory kicked in now. Some of them are a bit slower than the recommended speed, some I can do faster, as long as they're correct and have a pulse...guessing the examiner won't sit there with a metronome and mark me down for going slightly less than minim=52.

Aural is my weakest point. I can do the clapping and features stuff but can't sing. I mean, literally can't. I heard someone describe it as not knowing how to play the instrument that is their vocal cords. I have improved, have been trying to sing along to anything, whatever I put on cds/ iTunes, even TV theme tunes my Family Guy after a Wine is amusing and belting out tunes from Les Mis, all to my cat's disgust. I have made progress, can more or less carry a tune with someone to sing along to. I have all the apps and can sort of do the sight singing, may not get all the notes but am not miles away, but the singing back a phrase still eludes me. I think I will just accept I won't do well - by my calculations it's still possible to pass without passing aural. as you get 7 marks just for having a try. I'm also useless at sight-reading, but will try to just keep going and make up notes if necessary to keep the rhythm.

Pieces - Haydn's minuet and trip from Sonata in A flat major, Ninette's Musette by George Nevada, and Uzbuna by Bruno Bjeliniski. The Haydn is probably the best. Ninette's Musette is the most challenging, with pedalling and generally, but have worked hardest on it - after all the struggle, it's probably my favourite now. Uzbuna is fine, love it as it's quirky and bouncy, teacher even said it was full of life.

I have been dealing with a lot including physical and mental health issues and music has been such a sanctuary.

Nerves are my main worry, going to try to go in there and even enjoy it Shock whatever happens, I'm glad I did it, despite my many complaints indicating otherwise.

Grin

Practise as verb. Like advise and advice.

buggerthebotox · 13/07/2017 10:58

.....unless you're American, in which case it's practice as noun and verb. I think.

Welcome to mumsnet, user.Grin

buggerthebotox · 13/07/2017 10:59

broken will you feel brave enough to let us know how it went?

user1469270520 · 13/07/2017 18:53

Thanks Never - oddly, I am ok with advice/advise (or at any rate when I'm wrong I don't realise). I just don't find it easy to work out when practi*e is nouning or verbing though. I may go with Bugger and claim I'm being American-like Grin. I'm hoping Broken's success will convince me!

Really I'm just filling time until there's an exam update. I've ordered the G4 music and scales, which should come tomorrow. I'm feeling less enthused about doing an exam now, but will see.

user1469270520 · 13/07/2017 18:55

So obviously end of 1st para should be at end of 2nd para. Aaarrgh!

Broken11Girl · 13/07/2017 21:58

It was terrible. SadSadSad

To start, I woke up with 15 minutes to leave at a push, rushed to the station, would just have got my train but it was delayed anyway. Plan was to get a taxi. No debit card as idiot me used it online last night. Had just enough cash on me for train fare. Nice train staff man (sorry, my brain is mush). No money for taxi and late train meant me running to the exam centre, in the heat, and arriving late, tomato coloured and pouring sweat. So much for the elegance I had envisaged. Thankfully they had let the girl meant to be after me go, so I had time for a drink of water. I didn't really recover though. Being so flustered and nervous did for me.

Scales - first was B flat, have spent ages practicing, know the left hand E flat is finger 4, what do I do.. some were ok...totally messed up D minor contrary motion.

Pieces, had to restart the first two, were still slips in all of them but I did keep going. Little memory of them tbh.

Sight-reading was surprisingly ok, just ok though.

Aural I knew would suck, got confused as to to which note I was meant to be on in sight singing, actually know the piece played as I've played it (in grade 3 book I have, Czerny study in A flat) but still got the f $^&in time signature wrong Hmm and claimed it has a happy character, um Hmm

So yeah. I messed up everything. Sure I failed. Off to cry and drink GinWine

Oh I'm sorry Broken Sad but maybe it wasn't as bad as you think? Nobody is perfect at these exams, you know. Everybody makes mistakes.

Broken11Girl · 13/07/2017 22:07

Examiner was very nice, clearly sorry for me. He said 'Well done' at the end but think it was more in a slightly patronising 'aw bless' way than actually well done.

Thanks Cote! Wait and see I guess.

Oh Broken! Sorry to hear you had a tough time. Bad luck with the journey there. Sad Fingers crossed while we wait!

buggerthebotox · 13/07/2017 23:16

Fingers crossed. When will you hear?

LooseAtTheSeams · 14/07/2017 00:06

Broken I'm so sorry to hear about the horrible journey but I'm sure you did better than you think. I'm glad to hear the examiner was nice - that was my experience, too. I hope you're treating yourself to something nice after going through all that! CakeWine

Broken11Girl · 14/07/2017 18:11

Thanks all.
I think results take about a week.
I did indeed treat myself to some Wine and chocolate

I'm sorry to hear it didn't go as well as you hoped. Sounds like given the circumstances you did well to get through it at all. I know it won't help to be told it probably wasn't as bad as you feared, but I'm sure you've remembered all the bad bits only.

A week's not such a long time to wait (if you have enough wine to help dull the wait). Are you going to enjoy playing anything in particular while you wait?

Broken11Girl · 18/07/2017 02:23

Thanks.

The wait is killing me Sad yup plenty of Wine

Playing the Czerny study in A flat, Handel's air in B flat, both of which are grade 3. Bach's Invention #1. Scarlatti's capriccio in g which may be on the Trinity grade 5 list but ironically I'm probably finding the easiest.

Arrgh! I keep checking here for an update. I have bought the G4 books but haven't opened them...
Hopefully tomorrow will bring good news!

CoteDAzur · 21/07/2017 09:40

Me, too! We're rooting for you, Broken Smile

LooseAtTheSeams · 21/07/2017 11:35

Good luck Broken!
DS2 did his G4 just before you, I think, but no result yet. On the other hand his teacher has been known to be on holiday when the results come in, leaving us with weeks of suspense!

CoteDAzur · 24/07/2017 19:31

Any news, Broken?

Broken11Girl · 24/07/2017 19:48

Update: my result was online today.

I PASSED!

Just barely, think 100 + single digit number, but I did it!

Barely is not relevant, a pass is a PASS. Well done, especially with everything that happened before and on the day. You must be so pleased! Congratulations!!!

Yay!!!!

Broken11Girl · 25/07/2017 02:03

Thank you both!
