Broken's Grade 4 Piano Thread

Broken11Girl · 10/07/2017 01:50

Hello! I felt I was making the general music chat thread all about me, so would move my ramblings to a thread of my own. I may be being egotistical. Advice, support and Wine / Gin / Brew from the lovely musical ladies I already talk to and anyone else appreciated and much needed!
I played the piano (and clarinet) as a kid/ teen, never felt like a natural musician, especially pianist, but loved it. Got grade 5 clarinet (on second attempt Blush ) I returned to piano in April on my cheap Argos keyboard, and had the insane ambitious idea to do grade 4. Said exam is on Thursday.
I used a piano in my local community centre for a while but had to get an actual piano. I have terrible credit Grin but the credit union finally agreed to a loan and my digital piano came home about 3 weeks ago.

I have struggled, quite honestly, to the point where 2 weeks ago my teacher felt I didn't know the scales, lacked regular pulse in my playing and basically wouldn't pass. Last week, much hard work later, she was amazed quite impressed and feels I will definitely pass. I was all set to continue practicing my ass off.
However, the headphones broke off in the jack of my piano, and despite trying everything on YouTube, and raiding Robert Dyas, I can't get the broken off part out. I will be phoning the unnamed for now company in the morning to see if they can repair or replace look out for an angry AIBU if not.

I really needed the couple of days' practice, so very Sad right now. I did some silent scales practice, thanks for the idea Alexandra, and have been using the old keyboard for now - lucky I hadn't got around to selling it.

Scales are now there after Cote-like many hours of practice. I was quite discouraged by how much harder it is to remember them all as an adult opposed to a teen, but have got to the point where muscle memory kicked in now. Some of them are a bit slower than the recommended speed, some I can do faster, as long as they're correct and have a pulse...guessing the examiner won't sit there with a metronome and mark me down for going slightly less than minim=52.

Aural is my weakest point. I can do the clapping and features stuff but can't sing. I mean, literally can't. I heard someone describe it as not knowing how to play the instrument that is their vocal cords. I have improved, have been trying to sing along to anything, whatever I put on cds/ iTunes, even TV theme tunes my Family Guy after a Wine is amusing and belting out tunes from Les Mis, all to my cat's disgust. I have made progress, can more or less carry a tune with someone to sing along to. I have all the apps and can sort of do the sight singing, may not get all the notes but am not miles away, but the singing back a phrase still eludes me. I think I will just accept I won't do well - by my calculations it's still possible to pass without passing aural. as you get 7 marks just for having a try. I'm also useless at sight-reading, but will try to just keep going and make up notes if necessary to keep the rhythm.

Pieces - Haydn's minuet and trip from Sonata in A flat major, Ninette's Musette by George Nevada, and Uzbuna by Bruno Bjeliniski. The Haydn is probably the best. Ninette's Musette is the most challenging, with pedalling and generally, but have worked hardest on it - after all the struggle, it's probably my favourite now. Uzbuna is fine, love it as it's quirky and bouncy, teacher even said it was full of life.

I have been dealing with a lot including physical and mental health issues and music has been such a sanctuary.

Nerves are my main worry, going to try to go in there and even enjoy it Shock whatever happens, I'm glad I did it, despite my many complaints indicating otherwise.

Broken yay! You did it!!! Very well done and richly deserved!
And to be fair to DS2's teacher, she did check the system this time and he passed too! Much happiness!

TheCrowFromBelow · 25/07/2017 17:20

Congratulations! Well done you.
How's the piano now have you got it fixed

buggerthebotox · 25/07/2017 17:24

Well done broken. Hope you're celebrating. Wine. A pass is a pass is a pass. Are you intending to carry on?

Broken11Girl · 25/07/2017 22:26

Thanks all!
Indeed, copious Wine was had.
Loose well done and congrats to your DS!
Piano isn't fixed yet, company being useless. Hopefully they will collect this week.
I might carry on totally didn't YouTube grade 5 pieces enjoying some easy pieces right now.

Broken good luck with getting the piano sorted asap! Do carry on - it would be nice to have company while I struggle on with my G5 pieces. (Really need to practise a lot this summer!)
It's important to have fun as well, though!

Broken11Girl · 27/07/2017 03:35

Are you taking g5 in the autumn/ winter, Loose? ABRSM? I had a look at the scales and Shock
Fun definitely important. I'm enjoying the Bach (Petzold) minuet, Czerny study and Handel's Air in B flat, just because they're relatively easy, so can actually play them well after relatively little work...The Bach invention is another matter bastard
Company are finally sending packaging for the piano, so should have replacement piano baby soon.
I may have just drunk shopped online for music too...Grin Classics to Moderns, all 3 volumes of levels 3 and 4. Can't fault books that range from Bach to Einaudi though, sure will spend many happy hours.

OP posts:
LooseAtTheSeams · 27/07/2017 08:19

Broken definitely not that soon! I am a very slow learner - although believe it or not I think I've finally got my head round the scales! I reckon you and my 12year old will be taking grade 5 before I do.
Your drunk shopping sound positively inspired - I'm off to check up on those.

NeverEverAnythingEver · 27/07/2017 14:22

Congratulations Broken! Smile

Broken11Girl · 27/07/2017 19:39

Thanks Never! Smile

I don't know Loose, I doubt it. I'm definitely not rushing into grade 5. I'll work on a lot of pieces to consolidate my technique, there must be gaps, bits I've forgotten or never covered as a teen (didn't want to do grade exams as well as GCSEs, and teacher was a bit too kind tbh).
Drunk shopping is great not for my finances though Grin The Encore, Best of grade and Hours with the Masters also look good, next payday maybe. As for free music online, I've downloaded the ubiquitous Czerny op 100 and a couple of other sets of studies, Bertini studies, Clementi studies and op 36 sonatinas.

My music arrived Smile had a content evening playing through. Pleased with how my sightreading ability and ability to work out fingering have improved.

My grade 4 books have been opened!
Things are really busy at the moment but I locked myself away for an hour late last night to play them through.

Broken11Girl · 29/07/2017 22:50

Yay aren't we cool eh, rocking Friday nights Grin Which pieces are you going for?

I got in soaked and consequently in a terrible mood, straight into pjs, heating on and practice. So a glam Saturday night too.

Added Ayre by Jeremiah Clarke, and Bourree in G major by Handel to my list. And little Prelude in C (939) by Bach. I'm lacking the motivation to complete pieces really, happy messing around skipping between pieces.

A box arrived for my (ex) piano. Neighbour took it as I was out, sweet guy but elderly and not really with it, said oh I have your piano...I had a moment of wondering if they had sent a replacement already before realising they wouldn't. Box weighs next to nothing, how he thought it contained a piano Confused Grin
Will pack it up tonight, hopefully new baby will arrive before too long.

OP posts:
LooseAtTheSeams · 02/08/2017 12:28

Broken oh no, just an empty box! Never mind, you're a step closer - bet you can't wait until the replacement turns up!
Cat got me out of bed early yesterday morning. For some bizarre reason I decided to do my piano practice after feeding him rather than go back to bed. Not necessarily the best time but a lot more peaceful!

Broken11Girl · 03/08/2017 00:57

I so can't wait! Box is a start. I found bubble wrap in the convenience store 5 minutes down the road, after all the worrying, love little shops that stock everything.
Definitely bizarre Grin I'm more of a night owl. Cat knows better than to try to get me up early. She does sit and yowl at me when I'm playing and she feels I should be paying attention to her Grin

OP posts:
Broken11Girl · 03/08/2017 03:43

This is great Grin

OP posts:
LooseAtTheSeams · 03/08/2017 19:08

Grin my cat likes to get under the keyboard and round my feet and occasionally walks across the keyboard!
Keep us updated on the new arrival/replacement!

Broken11Girl · 07/08/2017 19:44

Certificate arrived! Smile

Comments on marksheet are accurate meeeeeeaaaaaan. So annoyed with myself, know I could've done so much better. Sad

OP posts:
Broken11Girl · 08/08/2017 01:13

Suffice to say the words hesitancy, messy, imprecision and unsafe appear Sad - I think - handwriting appalling, why the marksheets can't be online or at least typed in 2017 I don't know.

OP posts:
TheCrowFromBelow · 08/08/2017 05:14

You passed! That's all you needed to do.
You had quite a lot against you so now you know what you need to keep working on. Although I'm intrigued by the "unsafe" what were you doing Grin

Broken11Girl · 08/08/2017 06:23

Thanks. I know right, it's not as if I um, draped myself over the piano or something, tempting as it was... Grin I may be misreading, his handwriting is terrible.

OP posts:
Broken11Girl · 08/08/2017 07:16

It was referring to the singing back parts of the aural - as I said, I can't sing, maybe I attracted the local foxes.

OP posts:
LooseAtTheSeams · 08/08/2017 08:39

It doesn't matter what he wrote - you have the shiny certificate! You are officially beyond grade 4!
Annoying about the handwriting and you're right - seeing how long it takes them to send out the results, some typing or decent handwriting seems only reasonable!Smile

Broken11Girl · 12/08/2017 03:38

True Loose, I do have a shiny certificate! I need to buy a frame and put it on the wall Grin Exactly, waited 3 weeks for the sheet not to be able to read it. Lots of opposition to typing on abrsm forum, join the 21st century ffs Hmm

Update: piano is being collected on Monday.

I'm working hard on the keyboard. Returned to Mozart's pretty and fiddly sonata in C major K545, which I learned as a teen and attempted again a while before starting the g4 pieces...struggled and particularly could not get the motif of the Rondo bc co-ordination between hands...I can do it now! Grin and apparently it's grade 6 Shock that said, it's still challenging, so that makes sense, nothing wrong with a challenge piece.
Am revisiting Piano Fruit and other simple pieces, learning some from my shiny new books, all good.
