Broken's Grade 4 Piano Thread

Broken11Girl · 10/07/2017 01:50

Hello! I felt I was making the general music chat thread all about me, so would move my ramblings to a thread of my own. I may be being egotistical. Advice, support and Wine / Gin / Brew from the lovely musical ladies I already talk to and anyone else appreciated and much needed!
I played the piano (and clarinet) as a kid/ teen, never felt like a natural musician, especially pianist, but loved it. Got grade 5 clarinet (on second attempt Blush ) I returned to piano in April on my cheap Argos keyboard, and had the insane ambitious idea to do grade 4. Said exam is on Thursday.
I used a piano in my local community centre for a while but had to get an actual piano. I have terrible credit Grin but the credit union finally agreed to a loan and my digital piano came home about 3 weeks ago.

I have struggled, quite honestly, to the point where 2 weeks ago my teacher felt I didn't know the scales, lacked regular pulse in my playing and basically wouldn't pass. Last week, much hard work later, she was amazed quite impressed and feels I will definitely pass. I was all set to continue practicing my ass off.
However, the headphones broke off in the jack of my piano, and despite trying everything on YouTube, and raiding Robert Dyas, I can't get the broken off part out. I will be phoning the unnamed for now company in the morning to see if they can repair or replace look out for an angry AIBU if not.

I really needed the couple of days' practice, so very Sad right now. I did some silent scales practice, thanks for the idea Alexandra, and have been using the old keyboard for now - lucky I hadn't got around to selling it.

Scales are now there after Cote-like many hours of practice. I was quite discouraged by how much harder it is to remember them all as an adult opposed to a teen, but have got to the point where muscle memory kicked in now. Some of them are a bit slower than the recommended speed, some I can do faster, as long as they're correct and have a pulse...guessing the examiner won't sit there with a metronome and mark me down for going slightly less than minim=52.

Aural is my weakest point. I can do the clapping and features stuff but can't sing. I mean, literally can't. I heard someone describe it as not knowing how to play the instrument that is their vocal cords. I have improved, have been trying to sing along to anything, whatever I put on cds/ iTunes, even TV theme tunes my Family Guy after a Wine is amusing and belting out tunes from Les Mis, all to my cat's disgust. I have made progress, can more or less carry a tune with someone to sing along to. I have all the apps and can sort of do the sight singing, may not get all the notes but am not miles away, but the singing back a phrase still eludes me. I think I will just accept I won't do well - by my calculations it's still possible to pass without passing aural. as you get 7 marks just for having a try. I'm also useless at sight-reading, but will try to just keep going and make up notes if necessary to keep the rhythm.

Pieces - Haydn's minuet and trip from Sonata in A flat major, Ninette's Musette by George Nevada, and Uzbuna by Bruno Bjeliniski. The Haydn is probably the best. Ninette's Musette is the most challenging, with pedalling and generally, but have worked hardest on it - after all the struggle, it's probably my favourite now. Uzbuna is fine, love it as it's quirky and bouncy, teacher even said it was full of life.

I have been dealing with a lot including physical and mental health issues and music has been such a sanctuary.

Nerves are my main worry, going to try to go in there and even enjoy it Shock whatever happens, I'm glad I did it, despite my many complaints indicating otherwise.

Dear me:
Squeeze the corners of the mouth in
Keep tongue high
Use enough breath
Do not bite
Clarinet rests on the lower lip
Hold clarinet out enough
Hmm

OP posts:
Broken11Girl · 21/11/2017 03:47

Today's lesson: if I feel my sound has turned to crap, check my reed hasn't been displaced to the side Hmm

OP posts:
Broken11Girl · 21/11/2017 03:54

Might see if the Kozeluch is on EBay etc. Not buying new have spent enough money on music lately
The Vanhal is growing on me. As I said, it is high though. Starts on a high C Hmm that said, it's getting better at coming out. I do feel g6 is the right level, while I'm really consolidating at g3-4 on piano. Which is great. I will actually record Piano Fruit and the others soon Grin
Downloaded the ABRSM examples and feel the piano is really drowning out the clarinet, whose exam it is?! Oh yeah, I will need to hire an accompanist if I'm going to do it, Shock

Had a fit of festivity and downloaded a ton of Christmas carols. Eric Kuhlstrom's album is lovely, wish I had time to do all of it.
Will record the 3 pieces plus my g4 pieces which I've kept going soon. Also a couple of others, the Bach Invention #1, and Clementi op 36 no 1 and Kuhlau op 55 no 1 which I keep messing up because they have the same motif Hmm
Also for a New Year challenge, Debussy's The Snow is Dancing which is beautiful although difficult...chances of me learning it while still seasonally appropriate, low to none. A challenge is good though. I'm learning so much from all the pieces Smile
Going for grade 5 (Trinity) at some point in 2018 and should really be working harder on the pieces...will do in the new year.

Broken11Girl · 13/12/2017 07:06

Oh and I've figured out the time to several carols by ear Grin proud. Just learning the arrangements. I'm adapting them my self as necessary, small hands etc.

Deep breath. Here I am:

OP posts:
Broken11Girl · 02/01/2018 23:30

I am aware the first bit is wimpy, there are some hesitations and notes that don't quite come out clearly, the ornaments in the middle are crap and the fast run at the end is messy.

OP posts:
Broken11Girl · 02/01/2018 23:33

And the pulse did fluctuate.
I can play it better, the nerves got to me.

OP posts:
Broken11Girl · 17/01/2018 04:05

Do I enter for the exams or not?!
Definitely Trinity.
I have just over 2 months.
Piano g5, I can pretty much do the scales although staccato needs a lot of work. Done some work on the pieces but they're still very much challenge rather than 'comfortably my level' - but gods, my g4 pieces felt impossible with far less than 2 months to go.
Clarinet g6, cba doing more scales so going for orchestral extracts, chosen pieces, virtually sightreading all except the tricky moments, keeping in time with the accompaniment, oh and finding an accompanist will be the issue.
Much prefer the aural tests with Trinity. No singing. Should be fine.
Sightreading piano not required until g6, clarinet piece of cake...why am I a reader with clarinet but a memoriser and looker with piano, that's weird tbh.
Will go for musical knowledge for piano, nothing I don't know or can't Google, Wikipedia page on the composer should do it. Obv I've already done that and can describe the pieces, and um I know the key each is in and what the dominant and subdominant keys are.
All are lovely pieces btw.
Can't believe I'm doing this...Grin

Broken11Girl · 17/01/2018 04:13

Can't believe I forgot to say this...
I REACHED A NINTH IN LH on the piano!
Right on the edge of the keys, but I did. I'm only 5ft0.
Go me! Grin

Hello, I've not been on your thread before, hope you don't mind me joining in.

I say enter for the exam. I always found that once I had that deadline, the motivation was stronger and suddenly the practice all fell into place and things came together.

treaclesoda · 17/01/2018 04:15

You reached a ninth? I have tiny hands and can only do an octave. I'm very jealous!

Broken11Girl · 22/01/2018 07:15

Hi. Sorry for the boast! I couldn't do a ninth before, my hands have kind of stretched out, can separate the fingers more iyswim. I couldn't physically reach more, my thumb and little finger are practically straight out at nearly 180 degrees to get the 9th and on the edges of the keys. So it can be worked on. Are you playing now?
Thanks for the exam enabling Grin I think you're right, the deadline is motivating. No reason I can't be ready in 2 months if I pull my finger out.

I think Trinity grade 5 piano and 6 clarinet are go Shock
Piano pieces are slowly getting there, lots of time yet. Grade 5 level pieces are definitely notier but I've been learning slowly alongside the other pieces. Scales I can do already - ahhhh, the bliss of not having the huge workload you do with ABRSM.
I don't even know which pieces I'm going for with clarinet Grin ordered Chanson de Matin by Elgar as love it but it has a high G Confused oh well, I can work on it. It's not easy as you can't really pinpoint stretch or co-ordination as you can with piano, mouth muscles just don't work that way, you need to relax, not that I'm saying tensing up us good with piano. Relatedly, I haven't been in at a reasonable practice hour much, especially if I'm working on high notes. It's the accompaniment that's stressing me, Trinity book hasn't come with a CD or download, and also sorting an accompanist for the exam. .

OP posts:
Broken11Girl · 30/01/2018 05:35

Having said that, I could probably find the pieces on YouTube to practice with. Think you can adjust the speed? Anyone know?

PollyPelargonium52 · 30/01/2018 05:41

I can recommend warming up daily with the scales at grade 4 level it will boost technique in the long run. You can always just aim for grade 5 as many people stop there. I went up to the ALCM diploma but that was just me. It was during childhood and I was totally encouraged by my parents it is so much harder as a working adult and when we are older etc.

You deserve a hobby and it is always good to have a goal.

With aural just try your best that is all you can do.

It sometimes helps to listen to the pieces e.g. on youtube to get a good idea of the tone and expression side to the pieces. That way you won't just become a technician instead of a musician!

You may even find you get a breakthrough. A lot of this is confidence and effort.

Good luck and do let us all know how you get on.

Broken11Girl · 05/02/2018 08:27

Thanks Polly. Yes I warm up with scales, mix of the g4 ones and Trinity g5 reqs, also the 'easy' keys 3 octaves. I also do Hanon exercises.
I've listened to all my pieces on YouTube obsessively a lot Smile

It is so much more difficult as an adult. I find I have the understanding but my fingers don't always obey Grin My stubby fingers are never going to get to g8 piano, I think g5 or 6 will be my limit. Who knows with clarinet - without blowing my own, um, clarinet Grin, I was surprised how much of it came back and how quickly compared to piano.

I have my banking app open to pay for the exams right now... ShockGrin

Broken11Girl · 05/02/2018 09:40

Oh FGS done. I don't think I'll bother.I'm clearly a useless musician.

OP posts:
Broken11Girl · 06/02/2018 06:25

Blush Grin after that, I had a much better day. Sometimes progress comes in spurts.

OP posts:
Broken11Girl · 06/02/2018 07:06

Oh FFS Trinity don't have such modern conveniences as online entry! And my laptop has died so no way to print the entry form, or fill it in - my tech skills don't run to that anyway. Gaaaaaahh. Memories of g4. MY TECHNOLOGY HATES ME. THE WORLD HATES ME.
WHY AM I DOING THIS?!

OP posts:
Broken11Girl · 07/02/2018 07:01

I'm not doing well health-wise. Getting worried I won't be ready or able to get there. Wondering if I'm being stupid.

OP posts:

A month to go.
Eeeeeeek Shock

OP posts:
LooseAtTheSeams · 20/02/2018 08:37

You can do it! Smile

Broken11Girl · 21/02/2018 21:52

I don't know Sad

Accompanist sorted for clarinet anyway.

Love Elgar's Chanson de Matin but it goes so high which I struggle with. I might go for the Finzi piece which I'm meh about but doesn't have that risk.

OP posts:
Broken11Girl · 22/02/2018 02:57

Actually the Finzi is growing on me really don't want to tackle the stupid high G in the Elgar it's quite pretty.
