What good or even just decent music can I get my 4.5 yr old into so that I can avoid boyband shite in the house?

I have heard from another parent that the little girls (yes R and Y1) in the school she is going to start in September are into JLS and One Direction Shock

The things we play at home which she likes, apart from nursery rhymes, are the Vaccines (yay), Hugh Laurie (ho hum, DH's music), and Duran Duran Blush

I have tried bands with female singers and she doesn't like them (liked a few Garbage songs, that's all). But my music collection is not extensive and mostly consists of 90s grunge.

Please please please can someone recommend something that she may like, that she can play to school friends in a year or so to FIGHT the JLS/1D takeover?

If you can think of anything with a female singer you get extra points Wink

Thank you.

You're fighting a losing batle Im afraid . The music doesn't matter, its what they look like. It does help if they can dance to it.

MrsMcNulty · 15/07/2012 12:04

Noooooooooooo I will not give in. How on earth can 4/5 year olds care what teenage boys look like?!

Oh. I thought you meant 11 year olds.

passivehoovering · 15/07/2012 12:07

Hmmm, DP is in charge of music in this house, so not totally sure but dd (3.5) seems to like The Cure, caterpillar and Lovecats. A little bit of Hendrix. You could try the Beatles, work up from Ob la di, octopussys garden and yellow submarine. Al Stewart " year of the cat", we like cats! She has a thing about buddy Holly. We also play all about eve, but dc doesn't really like female singers either, so moved onto Sisters of mercy.

wannabedomesticgoddess · 15/07/2012 12:09

It stems down from any older siblings and then spreads like wildfire through the rest. It has very little to do with music and very much to do with whats "cool".

I think its one thing you are just going to have to ride out. :(

SoozyWoozy · 15/07/2012 12:09

My DD 8yo refuses to listen to boy-bands... she has always said she likes real music, so it has to have real instruments!!! So we have a little girls who appreciates classical music and musicals. Its not everyone's cup of tea but there are several pieces she loves, like Peter and the Wolf and another which is almost a story of the orchestra.

Might be worth exploring with your DD?

cocolepew · 15/07/2012 12:09

I brainwashed my 2 with Blondie, Ska and Stones.

cocolepew · 15/07/2012 12:10

Unfortunately DD2 loves JLS. I've had to take her twice to see them.

MrsMcNulty · 15/07/2012 20:38

Hmmmm thank you all, I am still going to try to fight this one...

I will try the Cure actually, Love Cats was on in a shop the other day and she commented on it. But I was hoping for something a bit more up to date to play at home so I can brainwash her and her friends in a year's time and fight the boyband pap/drivel!

Like the idea of getting her into real music, will try that one too.

coco I am sorry you've had to see JLS twice, that sounds hideous.

It was traumatising, I didn't realise teenagers could scream so bloody loud Shock

redlac · 15/07/2012 20:42

My DD likes alongside one direction shite Foo Fighters, Abba, Queen, The Vaccines, The Black Keys, and her favourite song at the moment is one by Mull Historical Society. however, try as I might she flatly refuses the listen to the God that is Morrissey

redlac · 15/07/2012 20:44

Oh what about Paramore? My dd loves Haley and her orange hair

drjohnsonscat · 15/07/2012 20:44

My DCs like the Monkees, Kool and the Gang, Ian Dury (hit me with yr rhythm stick), Abba. Am thinking of trying some 60s girl bands - Da do ron ron type of thing.

ifeelloved · 15/07/2012 20:46

Don't give in. It's worth it.

Dd1 (8) asked to have white stripes the other day on her iPod. She also likes elbow, depeche mode, Mumford and sons, kasabian, kings of leon, ting tings oh and dolly Parton!!!!

Avoid anything to do with x factor and capital radio and you should be safe!

baskingseals · 15/07/2012 20:46

rolling stones

i love house and rave. the dc hate it. so we compromise with the rolling stones and maybe a bit of fleetwood mac and the jacksons, everybody loves 'can you feel it'

even taught them a few disco moves Grin

CharlotteBronteSaurus · 15/07/2012 20:46

dd1 has just turned five, and likes the Flaming Lips, Arctic Monkeys, Hot Chip and Vampire Weekend. Basically she likes anything with a daft/interesting lyric: "like a monkey with a miniature symbol" or "Go into business with a grizzly bear"

CMOTDibbler · 15/07/2012 20:47

My 6 year old likes the Rolling Stones, Queen, Metallica, AC/DC amongst other stuff, but tbh his most listened to CDs (in the car) are the Glee ones. My theory is that its a mix of stuff which is totally radio edit so I don't mind him singing along.

TheTeardropExplodes · 15/07/2012 20:48

Dolly Parton
Kate Bush
Joni Mitchell
Florence and the Machine
Adele
Lady Ga Ga

baskingseals · 15/07/2012 20:49

sorry just seen you mentioned a female singer

Nina simone i can sometimes get away with. billy holiday definitely not.
what about a bit of Supremes?

CharlotteBronteSaurus · 15/07/2012 20:49

careful with gaga
it is a bit uncomfortable to hear one's 4yo sing "i'm bluffing with my muffin"

baskingseals · 15/07/2012 20:50

not forgetting the queen of soul herself - Aretha Franklin

crumpet · 15/07/2012 20:52

ELO currently going down well here, along with Erasure

NorbertDentressangle · 15/07/2012 20:53

Over the years our DC (now aged 8 and 12) have loved : Supergrass, White Stripes, Elbow, Kaiser Chiefs, Subways, Nirvana etc.

Currently they both love Jack White's Blunderbuss! (as do I!)

cocolepew · 15/07/2012 20:54

Others DD, 10 y o, likes are GaGa, Cher Lloyd Hmm, any dance crap on MTV usually with inappropriate lyrics, Cheryl Cole.

Good stuff she likes is Foos, Black Keys, QOTSA. Abba.

DD2 is 14, she likes Muse, Stones, Blondie.

MrsMcNulty · 15/07/2012 20:54

Wow wow I love you all, some excellent ones here, that I can play without crying! And female singers too, I am going to listen to a few online and order some!

I am so fighting the boybands, they're not even swoonsome boys just horrid cheesy ones. Now Simon Le Bon back in the day Wink

She really really loves the Woo Hoo song from the Kill Bill soundtrack best of all, I need an album full of nuttiness like that to add to my anti BB fighting kit.

Thank you sooooo much Thanks
