What good or even just decent music can I get my 4.5 yr old into so that I can avoid boyband shite in the house?

I have heard from another parent that the little girls (yes R and Y1) in the school she is going to start in September are into JLS and One Direction Shock

The things we play at home which she likes, apart from nursery rhymes, are the Vaccines (yay), Hugh Laurie (ho hum, DH's music), and Duran Duran Blush

I have tried bands with female singers and she doesn't like them (liked a few Garbage songs, that's all). But my music collection is not extensive and mostly consists of 90s grunge.

Please please please can someone recommend something that she may like, that she can play to school friends in a year or so to FIGHT the JLS/1D takeover?

If you can think of anything with a female singer you get extra points Wink

Thank you.

sorry....meant to add that unfortunately they have also liked complete and utter crap stuff like the Cheeky Girls, JLS etc so its impossible to eradicate all that but you can at least introduce some good stuff.

I cross posted with loads of you here and am too busy laughing at CharlotteBronteSaurus's post to type fast so will probably do so again. But I am so grateful, I am old and tired and need inspiration to go buy some new music. I can't even get her into the craziness that is Muse.

My 4 year old likes The Partridge Family Blush. We sing along with David Cassidy very loudly in the car!! Blush Blush Blush

BedHog · 15/07/2012 21:02

CharlotteBronteSaurus you have to be careful with Bruno Mars too, as I found when DS started doing pelvic thrusts and then took his trousers down in the middle of Debenhams while singing about 'really nice sex' at the top of his voice! Blush

My kids really don't care for any of the 90s grunge I play at home, sadly. DDs like the Bratz "Rock Angelz" CD (was a gift) which is ... Hmm... It is girl band shite in my eyes but I suppose at least it's a band?? Am just trying to talk myself out of this one here... sigh They also like TATU's All About Us which is also girl band stuff but it's got a "rock" feel to the song... Could have been worse. I'm glad they aren't into boys at all so non of that around here!

tigercametotea · 15/07/2012 21:06

non of that boyband crap around here I mean

coansha · 15/07/2012 21:08

my 2 dd's were brought up on the doors, the beatles, the clash, marvin gaye, barry manilow(dont laugh they loved it) abba, bay city rollers, madness, the cure, blondie, the rat pack, mr buble(ok mums sad choice) BEP, both loved all james bond songs, joe jackson, elvis costello, U2, modern too adele, rebbeca fergusson, emeli sande, pixie lott, maverick sabre....

iklboo · 15/07/2012 21:08

DS has suddenly got into disco/funk. I have no idea why or how. But he's still a sucker for a bit of Foo Fighters, Stranglers, Clash & Cee Lo.

MrsMcNulty · 15/07/2012 21:09

That's OK BedHog mine likes my 1970 TOTP album (now I am giving my age away) and we belt out "Something" X-factor/pub-singer stylee in the car Blush

My 2 year old is currently into samba carnival music because of the film Rio which I like my self. He also likes Tinie Tempah though so you can't win everything Grin

tigercametotea · 15/07/2012 21:09

And I credit Just Dance 1, 2 and 3 for introducing songs of bygone eras to my DCs. Who'd have thought they'd like Kungfu Fighting and Born To Be Wild? Grin

babyicebean · 15/07/2012 21:29

Eldest loves Queen
Middle has a major thing for anyting Brass Band
Youngest adores musicals and knows most of the words to 'Master of the House,Do you hear the people sing?' and 'Empty chairs at empty tables' from Les Mis with the ocasional rendition of 'Phantom of the Opera'

ifeelloved · 15/07/2012 22:06

You think bluffing with my muffin is bad. What about having a 3 year old pole (hanging on to a pole on the tube) dancing signing hit me baby one more time.

Or in ikea singing at the top of her voice 'Doncha wish your girlfriend was 3 like me, Doncha!). Wrong on very single level!!!!!

TheSurgeonsMate · 15/07/2012 22:12

Google spare the rock spoil the child.

Not a recommendation as such, my dd too young, but seems relevant.

BenderBendingRodriguez · 20/07/2012 21:34

Try Robyn for quality female-led Europop. My 3yo loves her (as do we all). He also likes Mariachi El Bronx, some Queen (Bicycle Race was a hit with him), Girls Aloud, Abba, a bit of Slayer and a bit of jungle Grin

ifeelloved my friend once saw a little girl of about 4 trailing after her mum singing "I'm horny, horny horny horny" at the top of her voice. She said mum looked exceedingly embarrassed.

BenderBendingRodriguez · 20/07/2012 21:36

At that age I liked the Police, Blondie, Turning Japanese by the Vapours, and Disney songs. HTH Grin

timtam23 · 20/07/2012 23:25

My 2 yr old's favourite song is Tone Loc "Funky Cold Medina" - no idea why. He also picks out house/rave stuff given half a chance. I think he likes a lot of bass and the faster tempo. The 4 yr old still likes the Bob the Builder theme tune. I'm trying to get them into my 80s/90s indie stuff but they're not having any of it.

Springforward · 20/07/2012 23:52

DS (3) loves an old ska compilation we've got - his fave is Liquidator, followed by Bonanza Ska - but today, after a long car journey, he's very into All These Things That I've Done by the Killers. He's usually quite happy with Beatles or Kinks stuff too Smile?

ifeelloved · 21/07/2012 21:14

Bender that's brill. Thankfully it wasn't my daughter!

insancerre · 29/07/2012 14:55

Buy lots of compalition cds from hmv- ska, punk, indie, 80s, 90s etc and never listen to the radio or watch x factor.
DD is a bit older then your DD at 15 but I have brought her up listening to decent music- we are all going to see PIL on saturday at the punk festival at blackpool
we don't have any JLS or boyband interference in this house

MrsMcNulty · 12/08/2012 19:41

Hi all, just reporting back to say she loves Blondie and especially the Ting Tings! In fact to the Ting Tings she said "thank you for buying this mummy, this is the music I always wanted" and has said she now wants to be a drummer when she grows up. Yay!

So big big thanks in particular to anyone who mentioned these two bands (and whoever said about loving daft lyrics, she loves Debbie Harry's rap about the man form mars who's stopped eating cars and eating bars "and now he only eats guitars!").

Surprised no one suggested Scissor Sisters.

MelanieSminge · 16/08/2012 02:19

MelanieSminge · 16/08/2012 02:20
