I'm the antithesis of geek. Thankfully their ultra-geek dad takes care of all that stuff and enthuses them with Scratch and the like. Apparently coding Is A Very Good Thing. Mental note to investigate those Barclays classes.

coding is basically computer programming. Schools are now supposed to do it in some form from very early on, even reception and yr1 children are supposed to programme electronic toys like beebots etc. (think they are called beebots or something like that), then they can move on to using programmes like scratch where they can learn the stages to build up a programme to do something and then move on from there.

Done.

I've tried to interest mine, but they are resistant. I'm not convinced that we need to be teaching EVERY child to code. My DD would be happier drawing than coding - and she's more likely to be a graphic artist or photographer than a programmer.

I have my own websites, and it is handy to be able to do a bit of coding, but its not really necessary. I could get along without it (and when it gets a bit tricky, I ask someone else who really LIKES coding).

If your kids are interested, then the Raspberry Pi is a fab little gadget.

minklundy · 16/12/2014 11:34

meglet have a look at kano. uses raspberry pie and a drag and drop style of coding blocks.

minklundy · 16/12/2014 11:38

raspberry pi ^
sorry pie obsessed.

we started off with coding turtle. you just give them instructions to walk forwards, turn left or right and pen up or down. the draw simple shapes.

drawing and coding are not necessarily separate activities (I started in graphics and am now a programmer)

other ways in include logic and electronics.
most basic coding revolves around testing conditions and then acting on the results i.e. if this is true do this, if not do that.

I did the survey a few days ago but forgot to mention it Grin

Yes, it is computer coding or programming, writing applications or apps as most people refer to them nowadays.

I would like to know more about Barclays and how/where they teach coding as it is mentioned in the survey!

Scratch is great and our eldest son loves it! His siblings watch him completely glued on him!

Basic HTML (for website building) is also very simple if people think that a programming language would be too hard. Anybody can learn it and you can store/open the created pages locally on your computer, you don't have to upload them on a server. They can make up stories, describe their interests, hobbies and use colours and pictures (copied from google ;) ) to make it look nicer and prettier :)

Thank you mink.

mn can Barclays come back and tell us about their coding classes please? I've googled it but nothing comes up.

For those interested code.org is a brilliant site for kids to get started.
100% recommend it. (Not In Anyway affiliated with the site) uses great tutorials for students and parents wanting to learn.
