Dear "What Shall We Do Today?" Tester

Many thanks for being a tester for the Playhouse Disney 'What Shall We Do Today?' web based interactive tool with your child aged 2-5. We hope you are enjoying the website.

Please use this thread to record which activities you've done, your thoughts on the website in general and on the activities.

Playhouse Disney would also love to see any pictures or artwork which resulted from any activities undertaken - you can upload the images onto your MN profile or if you have online storage (ie Photobox/Flickr etc) please post a link so other Mumsnetters can see what you and your child have been doing!

Thanks

MNHQ

With the warm weather we haven't really been in on the computer but we did attempt the ice cream which went down a storm. An activity we will definately do again.
We are goign away again this weekend so won't be on again unfortunately.

liath · 03/06/2010 08:12

I've been surprised how little my kids have liked the video clips as they do enjoy cartoons etc normally but I'd agree the small screen size might be part of it as we use a small lap top so the screen really is tiny. That affects the games too, and makes the moves too fiddly. The painting games really need a full screen to enjoy properly.

LostArtofKeepingASecret · 03/06/2010 20:04

We had a little time to go on the site again today, but DS didn't want to use the WSWDT part - he just went straight to the games he wanted to play (handy manny and imagination movers). I think that is going to be the case from now on really.

I think we would use the function again to give us ideas for something to do. But to be fair, it needs to have a larger amount of more original ideas to hold our interest. The tool is good, although as it is quite 'wordy', is obviously designed to be used with parent and child together. If there were more pictures, DS would be happier as he could play it by himself, without me interfering!

Dysgu · 03/06/2010 23:43

We have not been on the site - or any other computer site - in a while as we have been having such wonderful weather and have been out and about a lot.

However, 'Hot and Cold' has become something of a favourite and we 'have' to play it numerous time a day!

The weather is meant to change next week perhaps so will try to see if DD1 (aged 3) wants to play some computer games. She had never really been into computer games until she started on this site - some of the games, like Mickey Mouse's slide and the Little Einstein sticker game, are easy enough that she can play them by herself which has been good for her independence and motor skills.

Haven't had time to go on there this week. Maybe get a chance later before bed.

mustrunmore · 04/06/2010 09:41

The boys actually spent 15 mins together not fighting They played the Handy Manny game with the pipes, and watched a story.

whimsy · 04/06/2010 10:17

Weve been doing lots of the print and colour sheets. Have tried the ice cream which we all loved

squishy · 04/06/2010 15:31

Are we still meant to be reviewing?!! Oops, had a manic week.

DD had a play with Ooh and Aah (nut bowling) and enjoyed it for a bit but needed help (and when I wasn't able to as I was on a work call, got told "this is boring").

More play with the Bunnytown ice-cream parlour - this would be lovely if there was a more advanced level that mixed the flavours of ice cream - DD is 3.5 and was starting to try and do that and be creative.

BulletFaeTheScheme · 04/06/2010 18:50

Weather has been too nice to spend much time on site.
If there had been more outdoor activites I might have spent more time on site

squishy · 05/06/2010 10:34

Going to a 4th b'day party today - wouldn't animal charades be a great game for that sort of party?!?!!!

Babieseverywhere · 05/06/2010 13:30

We have been playing every day, usually very early on when I am too tired to run around with them.

I am overall very surprised with how much my nearly 3 year old DD has got to grips with the website. Her mouse control has improved a lot over the last couple of weeks. She is certainly a lot more capable than I thought on the computer. I even let her play on her own for 15 minutes yesterday whilst I was cleaning the kitchen ! She kept calling me through to show me the different games she was playing. I think her mouse drifts off a lot as the play screen is pretty small and she ends up in the menu system. Not that she is that bothered. The waiting time to load games is annoying but 'put up able with'.

I don't think much of the activities section. We did dress up, have an inside picnic and planted up the seedling we have been growing on the kitchen windowsill into an outside hanging basket and watered it. But we did these things, as they are typical toddler play not because the site videos inspired us, sorry.

New games we have looked at included...
Goofy's silly slide. DD could use her mouse enough to run the slide and built it and enjoyed seeing the different characters down the slide. Fast becoming a favourite alongside Donald and the Beanstalk.

We liked the video stories under the Read section and watched all 5 stories twice each, simple to set going and just listen to no interaction just listening. I looked at the PDF documents but didn't print or use them. DD has asked for them instead of bedtime stories a couple of times, not sure if I like the idea of a computer reading to my kids, both DH and I have a passion for reading and enjoy reading to the children ourselves.

Things I would love to see on the website :-
: Play screen could be bigger
: Reduce loading time of games
: Introduction of a favourites list to avoid trawling the lists in search of a specific loved game
: Allow games to be chosen on skills level (i.e. reader/non reader AND keyboard only/limited mouse control/advance mouse control)
: Maybe have a suggestion list when a game is finished. IF you like this game why not try X.
: Keep the games with variable game play like Donald and the beanstalk and get rid or vary the ones like Hide and Seek. TBH finding the animals in the same locations didn't bother DD at all, but on the 5th play through I was starting to go a bit mad.

Overall I think we will continue to use the site for the games and printouts to colour on inside days but wouldn't visit it for outside activities ideas. DD certainly knows the theme tune and is more aware of Disney characters and will ask by name for her favourite games

liath · 06/06/2010 21:02

We made telescopes and winnie the pooh masks today so that went down well.

The bear hitting the pots and pans didn't hold attention long and ds asked for the bake a cake game instead which he enjoys. The ooh and aah bowling one was great fun and had us all giggling away. A few seem just too fiddly on such a small screen, like the painting or join the dots type games.

Tortoise · 06/06/2010 21:11

How long do we have to keep adding thoughts etc to the thread?
Sure DD2 will keep using the site. She enjoys the games and activities.

liath · 06/06/2010 21:37

I was wondering that too, tortoise.

aristocat · 06/06/2010 22:32

DD has been on in the last few days but has only done the same games/activities as before

she has stored in in her favourites so it gets 10/10 from her and i know she will continue to use the site

NeedCoffee · 07/06/2010 10:31

Posting so I don't lose the thread again. Will update later when I get chance.

AnnMumsnet · 07/06/2010 14:39

Dear "What Shall We Do Today?" Testers

On behalf of both Playhouse Disney and Mumsnet, thank you so much for all your comments, experiences, pictures and views on the website - Disney are really pleased to get all your feedback & are taking all of your comments on board. We hope both yourself and your child(ren) enjoyed interacting with the site and that you continue to use it in the future.

This project has now come to an end so you no longer need to post feedback on this thread.

We need to arrange the dispatch of the goody bags - and unfortunately we forgot to capture your postal addresses before so please either look out for an email from Mumsnet asking for your address or email it in to us using the '[email protected]' address (please put Disney in the subject line). Goody bags should be sent out within the next couple of weeks.

Once again, many thanks
MNHQ
