Dear "What Shall We Do Today?" Tester

Many thanks for being a tester for the Playhouse Disney 'What Shall We Do Today?' web based interactive tool with your child aged 2-5. We hope you are enjoying the website.

Please use this thread to record which activities you've done, your thoughts on the website in general and on the activities.

Playhouse Disney would also love to see any pictures or artwork which resulted from any activities undertaken - you can upload the images onto your MN profile or if you have online storage (ie Photobox/Flickr etc) please post a link so other Mumsnetters can see what you and your child have been doing!

Thanks

MNHQ

Thank so much for selecting me. I have just read the email but DS1 is in bed so he will find out in the morning - I know he will be excited.

I have just had a read through the section for parents and it is shockingly mis-spelled and there are basic grammar errors (its/it's and their/there not understood by the person who wrote it) and typos. Sorry to be a pedant but it really does distract from the genuinely useful information provided.

Looking forward to trying some of the activities tomorrow.

TheProvincialLady · 12/05/2010 20:25

So of course I have a typo in my own post

KiddingAnxiously · 12/05/2010 21:06

Typical

I agree that it takes an abnormal amount of time to load. DS is nearly 3 but got fidgety while the sections loaded.

On the plus side, he loved Handy Manny's musical tool box. We played on the Micky clubhouse slide and also the number/hiding a picture game.

He loves Bear in the big blue house, but only really liked the hitting pots and pans game, and the puzzle game, the others were either too hard or didn't hold his interest long enough.

Overall he is very excited by the website and didn't want to leave it.

Will try more tomorrow

MrsRhettButler · 12/05/2010 21:53

wow! we were chosen thanks disney

i've only just realised though and dd is in bed so can't do any yet.. shes away tomorrow also so will have to start on friday, i can't wait.

just had a little play tester session myself and i know dd is going to love it

loading didn't seem to take very long on my laptop, no longer than beebies anyway

will be back on friday to report on dd's experience

EsmeWeatherwax · 12/05/2010 22:34

Just been on the site myself to have a wee look around, will introduce it to dd tomorrow! Reaaly pleased to have been chosen too, and the site looks great!

welshgirlintherain · 13/05/2010 06:35

Yay - we have been chosen and just having a look at site now....DH & I will be "playing" between us as I am off to have a c-section for DC3 tomorrow but he is under strict instructions to spend quality time with DS1 & 2 having a play until i get released....sorry discharged! Just familiarising myself with the website now so can play with my LO's later on

Macdog · 13/05/2010 10:01

Hi there!
Had a look at the site yesterday with dd (4). She really liked the Goofy Slide game, it reallly made her laugh to have the characters doing 'loopy-loops'

I hadn't really done a lot of computer games with dd before, and was surprised how quickly she cottoned onto the mouse skills required.
I think this was helped by having nice big areas to click on.

I'm looking forward to trying out the other activities on the site

ilovesprouts · 13/05/2010 10:19

me and ds2 havee been on hint and hunt this morning had about 5 games had to help him tho gonna do some more later

TheProvincialLady · 13/05/2010 11:13

DS1 enjoyed doing the Beetlebugs nature trail and it was pitched at the right level for him. Also Donald and the beanstalk.

The missing drumsticks was a great idea and we both loved it - but DS's mouse control was not up to the job so I had to draw the pictures for him. Maybe some guidance re the skill level needed for each activity would be useful?

I do wish the site didn't open a new page each time. And that it told you before selecting that it would be a print out and cut activity, etc.

Avad · 13/05/2010 11:49

We have just been on and are now officially the best in the world at the Imagination Movers dance

It does seem to take a while to load up each part, any way that can be cut short at all Disney? It's definietely not our PC being slow as it's a fancy schmancy super dee dooper one

The part where you select what you want to do, it's very sensitive scrolling down to the different options, jumps all over the place for me and hell when little ones with little mouse/mousepad on lappy control, can it be made less sensitive at all please?

Agree with previous poster that it would be great to know beforehand if it's (only) a print out (esp as it takes a while to load up!)

Tortoise · 13/05/2010 12:18

we were selected too. DD2 is very excited. She wants to make ice cream!
Will let her have a play after school today.
Site slow to load for me too.

justwhen · 13/05/2010 12:39

Well I meant to have a look by myself last night but dd3 (4 yrs) heard the music & came over. She absolutely loves it & in particular the bunny games and spent ages dressing up her bunny and buying things for it's home!
At first I thought the voices may be a little hard for her to understand as I didn't think they were that clear, however she had no problem.
I also think the pages take too long to load.
Am looking forward to exploring other parts of the site later.

liahgen66 · 13/05/2010 12:52

Ok, so we have started too.

My dd (just 3) wanted to play Special agent Oso but to be honest it's a bit beyond her, will suit dd (5 yrs ) I think.

Took ages to load but that may be my ancient computer as much as anything, dd was a bit itchy with the mouse and we kept getting all sorts up but if I guide her hand it's ok.

She enjoyed "painting" the little einsteins but wanted to change the colours of the actual characters as opposed to painting round them.

Has also printed a picture to colour later.

I have uploaded photos to profile of her at work.

Will let dd (5) have a go later, dd (3) is itching to look at Minnie Mouse now. It's a bit addictive

comewhinewithme · 13/05/2010 13:24

DD played on it this morning before Nursery.
We tried to get the Special agent Oso game to load but it wouldn't so as we were short of time we had a quick go of the hot and cold game, it was fun and her sisters did the finding while she did the hiding.
It is a lovely looking site but she does get frustrated with the slow loading time.

Bigmouthstrikesagain · 13/05/2010 14:21

Hello dd1 (4) and I tried out the site today and dd was impressed with the 'what shall we do today' jingle - and has been singing it to herself.

She wanted to go straight to the games options (as that is what she usually does on Cbeebies etc) and so found the multiple choices available a little bit restrictive and was not able to navigate herself around them.

I liked the look of the site but I think the layout needs to be more intuitive. The outdoor activities are not particularly impressive from the brief look I gave it today - 'collecting leaves'? I do not need a website to tell me to go to the park!

Bigmouthstrikesagain · 13/05/2010 14:22

We didn't have trouble with loading times btw - and dd enjoyed the Special Agent Oso games very much.

TheOldestCat · 13/05/2010 14:31

Thanks for selecting us - DD (3) and I explored the site this morning, while I fed DS (11 weeks). The site engaged her for ages and we had a lot of fun. That's my main plus, actually - it's something I can do with her while feeding a small baby!

OK, a bit stream of consciousness but it's hard to make notes while breastfeeding...

DD 'oooohed' and 'aaaahed' as soon as the site loaded and she could see the different characters along the top. She responded to the audio stuff and 'answered' Mickey Mouse etc.

Speaking of mice, this was the first time she had a go at using the computer's mouse, which she really enjoyed.

We played 'mousekespotter' and she loved it. Then 'Little Einsteins' - the clips went down well.

Her favourite activity was the 'beetlebugs' game (this was pitched at the right level for her - just challenging enough, but achievable). Some of the other games/activities (Special Agent Oso?) seemed aimed at older children - perhaps some suggested age level for the different games would be useful? Though, once we play more on the site we'll get used to those games that are right for her age and ability.

DD also loved dressing the bunny up and changing its colour etc. When I had to leave the room, she was keen to keep playing.

From my perspective (am on mat leave, but normally edit webtext for a living), the site looks great - busy, but then I imagine that's right for the target audience. It seems easy to use.

We'll get cracking on some pictures at the weekend.

liath · 13/05/2010 16:13

I'd agree about the activity video clips - too basic and I need NEW ideas, we've done dens and leaf collecting to death in the past. I liked the presenters though - engaging without being too patronising.

I'll report back on other stuff later - we need some bad weather to test the site out, the kids have been more interested in playing outside today .

TabithaTwitchet · 13/05/2010 16:22

We have already had a go at making a den - and then we had a teddy bear's picnic inside it

I have printed off some of the pictures for her to colour.

To be honest it has never occurred to me to let her try doing something on the PC - but I might let her have a go on one of the games tomorrow. She has never used the mouse before so not sure how she will manage.

I agree with pp that some sort of indication of age/level would be really helpful - DD is 2 and some of the things seem a bit above her level, so it would be useful to be able to filter them out.

IlanaK · 13/05/2010 16:23

We are not having any problems with the loading, so it may be a problem depending on who your service provider is?

My kids are currently printing out the "make a board game" which they are very excited about. I will report back how they liked it.

IlanaK · 13/05/2010 16:39

It was ok, but not great. I would have prefered it to have spaces that said "jump 3 times" or other action things. It was just a basic board game of going back and forward.

craftynclothy · 13/05/2010 16:53

Dd (just turned 3) has just been playing the Hundred Acre Wood Hint 'n' Hunt game. Although some of it was beyond her ability it was easy enough for me to adapt it to her. For example, I would read the riddle out, then explain it using much more basic questions. She would spot the item and I'd do the clicking (she can't manage the touchpad and stuff yet)

Haven't had any problems with loading.

I do agree with others though that some sort of age indicator would be useful. I think if you could select your child's age first and the options were then based on that it would be more fun. I think it would get to a point fairly quickly where I got sick of selecting options only to find they're too hard for dd and I think she would get fed up of seeing the start of it only to not be able to play it.

She is really enjoying it overall though.

Dysgu · 13/05/2010 17:27

Just saw this thread and got sad that we had not been selected - but thought to check and the email had bumped into my deleted folder!

So we HAVE been selected and so will have to find time between tea and bath tonight to have an explore - DD will be especially excited to see Special Agent OSO.

Looking forward to playing,..

CarrieDaBabi · 13/05/2010 17:38

aristocat, yes

well ive been tot the denist today, and have a sore mouht, so i'm hiding upstairs, while dh is with dd downstairs.

but we will definatley do the bubble painting tomorrow, and go on the site again

i'm going to have a look tonight on my own

ThreadKillerQueen · 13/05/2010 17:57

Is there going to be any guidelines/structure as to what/when we are to look at things?

Or is the idea to discuss what we are doing twice a week?
