BellaMumsnet · 09/11/2022 09:58

Created for Adapt

This is the feedback thread for Mumsnet users with children in years 10, 11, 12, or 13 who took part in a product test of Adapt, a revision timetable app.

Testers, you can now share your feedback. Please do so by answering the below questions, as well as giving your feedback via the short survey we’ve emailed you.

  • Was your child more organised and in control of their revision while using the app?
  • Did you find the app helped you support your child with their learning and revision?
  • What were your favourite features of the Adapt app?
  • Would you recommend Adapt to other parents? If yes, why?
Here’s what Adapt has to say: "Want to be more involved with what your child is learning at school and revising at home? Which topics they’re covering and where they need additional support? As a revision app, we get questions from students all the time - but actually, we get even more questions from parents asking how they can support their children through exams. That’s why we’ve developed Adapt for Parents - now, we need your help to ensure we get it right!"

All testers who complete the required feedback will receive a £10 amazon voucher and be entered into a prize draw to win a £100 voucher (from a list).

Thanks and good luck!

App was very easy too use for my daughter.

Snowdropsarelovely · 29/11/2022 14:39

Thank you for giving us the opportunity to test this app!

Was your child more organised and in control of their revision while using the app?

They loved the idea of it but sometimes struggled to find the correct content - some subjects / areas were not yet populated

Did you find the app helped you support your child with their learning and revision?

I could see what was being done, although they can mark activities as done even if their efforts were cursory !!

What were your favourite features of the Adapt app?

I could see what my child had done. I liked that specific subjects could be allocated to days

Would you recommend Adapt to other parents? If yes, why?

I’m afraid not - I think it’s expensive for what it is, given that some curriculum areas are missing. I would also like it to be available for laptops

oodieoodie · 29/11/2022 14:41

Thanks for the chance to test out this app.

Was your child more organised and in control of their revision while using the app? Yes he seemed to be. He likes anything that is phone based rather than book based, so this was more beneficial to him.

Did you find the app helped you support your child with their learning and revision? Yes as I could see what he was doing and where he needed more support.

What were your favourite features of the Adapt app? The confidence rating

Would you recommend Adapt to other parents? If yes, why? Unfortunately no as I don't think it is worth the price of £9.99 a month.

Moocherbot · 29/11/2022 14:49

Was your child more organised and in control of their revision while using the app?
Yes, just using it as a reminder and breaking down tasks from a huge "Do revision" task seemed to help
Did you find the app helped you support your child with their learning and revision?
Not exactly, it was more about making a manageable and visible schedule
What were your favourite features of the Adapt app?
Board-specific info
Would you recommend Adapt to other parents? If yes, why?
Probably only if it was free/couple of pounds, for kids struggling to set a schedule

JulesJules · 29/11/2022 15:29

Was your child more organised and in control of their revision while using the app?

Not really. DD2 found that her modules were not on there or she could not find them. She found it difficult to navigate, not very intuitive to use.

Did you find the app helped you support your child with their learning and revision?

No, for the above reasons. A calendar would have worked just as well.

What were your favourite features of the Adapt app?

It was easy to set up. We both thought the idea of it was good, shame that it didn't really work at all for us in practise.

Would you recommend Adapt to other parents? If yes, why?

I think it may work better for younger children (my DD2 is 18 and doing A levels) where being able to more closely monitor schoolwork would be easier or more important for parents and child.

Poopoopoo · 29/11/2022 15:58

Was your child more organised and in control of their revision while using the app? No, she found it an extra thing to worry about
Did you find the app helped you support your child with their learning and revision? No, I did not have time to look. Besides she is very organised anyway and sitting with her and going over each subject on different days worked better
What were your favourite features of the Adapt app? My daughter liked looking through the curriculum information
Would you recommend Adapt to other parents? If yes, why? Not really.

Iwantawhippetor2 · 29/11/2022 16:37

I thought the app in general is a great idea but may suit younger learners. My DD is 15yo and quite an independent learner, at first she thought it was quite good but the subject list didn't really match the subjects she doing (WJEC). Also, when you put in that you have an exam coming up it didn't include any of those subjects in the study plan and kept bring up the same subjects to study rather than a variety. As a parent I thought it was great if you had a more willing participant, rather than a tricky teen 😁

barricade · 29/11/2022 22:02

Sincere thanks for the opportunity to test & trial this revision app.

Was your child more organised and in control of their revision while using the app?
Yes with certain aspects. Very good with learning formulas and quick facts. But it was rather fiddly when needing to enlarge large images and then reduce the screen size, and then enlarge something else again. The app was accessed via a phone - but desktop / laptop access would be a better alternative at times.

Did you find the app helped you support your child with their learning and revision?
If committed, this app can be extremely beneficial with aiding learning and revision.

What were your favourite features of the Adapt app?
A broad range of subject areas covered.

Would you recommend Adapt to other parents? If yes, why?
If users (school children) can commit themselves to regularly accessing and using the app extensively, the product can be very beneficial. However. it will not be economically viable if users just dip in and out occasionally (one can access the general internet for that for much less).

In summary, this is definitely an innovative product, and a good additional option for parents in helping their children with their revision and learning.

saltedcaramelhotchoc · 30/11/2022 07:33

Thank you for giving us the chance to test this app!

Was your child more organised and in control of their revision while using the app?
Not really, but she likes to organise herself and didnt at all like using the app, which surprised me as she is often an app person (more than me...).

Did you find the app helped you support your child with their learning and revision?
My DD didn't want me anywhere near the revision. I think she felt over-observed. She is generally good at getting on with things, and I felt it slightly odd to be micro managing teen work anyway - so it may just not work for us. The content was variably there - i think having more content might help.

What were your favourite features of the Adapt app?
The reminders.

Would you recommend Adapt to other parents? If yes, why?
I would if more content was added, and if parents are in habit of overseeing revision - but it depends a lot on the character of the child. I thought my DD would love it but I think she's got used to her own method. My younger one, however, might, when the time comes.

Thank you again!

Tobermory · 30/11/2022 17:53

Thankyou for the opportunity to try out this app.
Was your child more organised and in control of their revision while using the app?
somewhat. She struggles with self
organisation and so the reminders were helpful.

Did you find the app helped you support your child with their learning and revision?
a little, but as previous posters have said it would have been helpful to be able to be able to select the appropriate exam board and past papers.

What were your favourite features of the Adapt app?
Reminders

Would you recommend Adapt to other parents? If yes, why?
I don't think I wokld recomend it , due to the price. As a freebie yes, but not with the £10 a month cost. for me there wasn’t enough material or resources. If I was going to spend this amount every month I would expect it to have more resources to enhance learning and assessment. I can already download past papers and their mark schemes for free so should expect more than this.

TheTurn0fTheScrew · 30/11/2022 22:12

Thank you for the free trial.

Was your child more organised and in control of their revision while using the app?
Unfortunately not. She found it a little dry and lacking in content - she prefers apps with more fun features such as Quizlet. Also, although she puts in the hours she prefers to keep flexible in terms of what she does and when, so wasn't interested in the reminder feature.

Did you find the app helped you support your child with their learning and revision?
DD didn't like this AT ALL. I've never used Show My Homework and trust her to get on by herself. She prefers to manage herself so this aspect didn't appeal.

What were your favourite features of the Adapt app?
I like the reminders - DD didn't.

Would you recommend Adapt to other parents? If yes, why?
I think if you are used to overseeing your child's homework this could be a good way of extending that to revision, particularly if (eg) you're at work and they're at home. However I think that the current format does not offer enough content for £9.99 a month. Either the app needs more content and features, or it should be free.

LayeringUp · 01/12/2022 14:11

I thought DS would engage more with this than a written revision timetable as he prefers everything online. However, he didn't find it user friendly and there just wasn't enough content.
Like another user, it did prompt him to organise himself to revise so that was a benefit but I wouldn't pay for this, sorry.

starlingsintheslipstream · 03/12/2022 17:42

• Was your child more organised and in control of their revision while using the app?

Initially he started with a flurry of excitement. Seemed to think it was pretty good but then had quite specific topics he needed to revise for his mocks and I think the app wasn't quite tailored towards those so it went by the wayside.

• Did you find the app helped you support your child with their learning and revision?

Not really. As above he was focussing on certain topics and didn't really have time to delve into the app curating a revision guide.

• What were your favourite features of the Adapt app?

Ds said the timetable.

• Would you recommend Adapt to other parents? If yes, why?

Not really as regards the paid version. I'm not sure he found it that useful. And I'm not especially interested in monitoring what he does. He's 17 and needs to get on board and do it for himself. It might be better for younger children.

Thanks for allowing us to test though.

AugustRose · 03/12/2022 18:55

1.Was your child more organised and in control of their revision while using the app? No

2.Did you find the app helped you support your child with their learning and revision? Not really, they didn't really use it.

3.What were your favourite features of the Adapt app? It had information on relevant future jobs and courses which my child liked.

4.Would you recommend Adapt to other parents? If yes, why? Not sure. If they like being organised and doing revision then yes, but I don't think it helped someone who struggles to plan ahead.

We found that not all subjects were available for all of the exam boards, e.g. we wanted GCSE AQA History but at the time we downloaded the app, no aspects of this course were accessible. I also think £9.99 a month is expensive as there are free revision timetables available.

kennythekangaroo · 05/12/2022 19:24

Was your child more organised and in control of their revision while using the app?
Yes at the start, but lost it fairly quickly when she missed some days and then got stressed about it.
Did you find the app helped you support your child with their learning and revision?
It was useful to split the subjects up and ensuring they repeated each element several times.
What were your favourite features of the Adapt app?
Linking to the exam boards and repetition of elements.
Would you recommend Adapt to other parents? If yes, why?
Probably but I feel £9.99 a month is too much.

Buzzardbird · 09/12/2022 11:36

Was your child more organised and in control of their revision while using the app?
My child found the reminders useful

My child found that the app suggestions for revision were too simplistic and not at the level she was on.

My child took a while to discover that she could tick off revision she had done, but then found this useful.

I wouldn't really recommend this app to others until it has been tweaked a little to cover the difference between foundation levels and higher levels. This app acted no differently to her revision schedule that she had set for herself...she did however use it for the purpose of this test.

welshmardymum · 10/12/2022 09:52

Was your child more organised and in control of their revision while using the app?
She was very engaged initially and enjoyed looking around the app - we did it together actually and it was fun and we both felt quite inspired - however we couldnt quite work out how to link in to some of her subjects - she felt some were not there and whilst at the beginning liking how it suggested she could do things i don't think she actually bothered with it - and in the end we forgot about it which is probably indicative of how useful we found it. In fairness she is very engaged with school and quite focused on getting homework etc in on time - but i did feel this would have helped her with timing her revision - we are going to have another look as i think we may have some more time left.

Did you find the app helped you support your child with their learning and revision?
No - not really, and it may be as outlined above that she is already quite focused herself - i felt i needed to prod her to use it and i do enough of that already!

What were your favourite features of the Adapt app?
the linking in of the parent account and just seeing what kinds of subjects she is working on

Would you recommend Adapt to other parents? If yes, why? No - i think it is priced too highly for what it offers - engaged students won't need it and unengaged are not going to want to use it. In the current financial climate i think most parents will have something else thy would rather spend their money on per month sadly.

BadlyWrittenPoem · 12/12/2022 11:17

Was your child more organised and in control of their revision while using the app?
Most of the time. It was helpful that it adjusted the timetable if she missed a day rather than her being perpetually behind.
Did you find the app helped you support your child with their learning and revision?
Yes because it enabled her to have a structure for revision and covering content.
What were your favourite features of the Adapt app?
She could do it anywhere with an interent connection, the timetable adjusted if a day was missed, it covers all the content specific to her syllabus.
Would you recommend Adapt to other parents? If yes, why?
Yes, because my daughter has found it very helpful. In fact I have already recommended it to one of my daughter's friends.

Houseof5boys · 14/12/2022 12:28

Was your child more organised and in control of their revision while using the app?
Sadly not. He found it just added more confusion.

Did you find the app helped you support your child with their learning and revision?
Not really, I think if we could get more specific content then it might of.
It would have been helpful to have been able to put in the exam board to get tailored content.

What were your favourite features of the Adapt app?
It’s a great idea.
Would you recommend Adapt to other parents? If yes, why?
Probably not as it didn’t really work for us.

Coopee · 14/12/2022 15:50

thank you for the opportunity to test this app.

sadly for my teens this was not something I could get them to engage in. At 16, the testing window came shortly after GCSE’s and start of college. Effectively they ‘didn’t need to revise yet’ 🙄

both my children have SEN and I really felt this would help. Not through me and home though. It may be worth contacting colleges and seeing if they would be interested in uptake ?

I did feel, if I needed to study, this may be something that would help me (SEN), but not sure that warranted the cost.

the ability to ‘learn alongside a body double’ may help - if you know, you know … but obviously careful screening would be needed so not necessarily possible.

Was your child more organised and in control of their revision while using the app?

no. They just didn’t want to engage

Did you find the app helped you support your child with their learning and revision?
see above

What were your favourite features of the Adapt app?
see above.

Would you recommend Adapt to other parents? If yes, why?

probably if their children were younger and more able to engage in home learning and revision. However it’s quite sikr to Bbc bite size etc so it’s already been done - free

dickinson13 · 15/12/2022 16:54

Was your child more organised and in control of their revision while using the app?
He wasn't keen on using it as he found it seemed like extra work using the app.
Did you find the app helped you support your child with their learning and revision?
I thought it was handy to see all the different topics that my son was learning. Being in Year 10 he still has a lot he has bit yet covered.
What were your favourite features of the Adapt app?
The ability as a parent to overlook the revision timetable.
Would you recommend Adapt to other parents? If yes, why?
Yes if you need help with setting up a revision timetable.
