This is the feedback thread for the 120 Mumsnetters who tested out Birchbox’s monthly beauty box delivery service. Each tester received 3 Birchbox boxes each containing 5 make-up, skincare, hair, and body products.

Here’s what Birchbox has to say: “We really hope that you’ve enjoyed getting to know us through your Birchbox discovery bundle. (Fingers crossed that you found some new beauty favourites along the way, too!) We’re so excited to get your feedback on your experience with us so far – your thoughts are honestly so valuable to us. Here’s to discovering beauty that works for real life!”

Testers please answer the following questions:

- What was your favourite product? Why?
- Did the Birchbox boxes give you a chance to try products or brands that you wouldn’t have otherwise? Which ones? Did you like them?
- Which product(s) would you buy in future, now that you’ve tried them?
- Which was your favourite box design? Why?
- What did you like best about your Birchbox experience?
- Would you recommend Birchbox to a friend or family member?

All testers who leave their feedback on this thread AND fill in the feedback survey will be entered into a prize draw to win a £300 voucher of their choice (from a list).

Thanks

  • What was your favourite product? Why?
I really enjoyed trying the natural deodorant. It's not a product I've ever bought or would have bought and it smelt amazing! -Which was your favourite box design? Why? I loved the Disney themed box. So on trend and Christmassy. -What did you like best about your Birchbox experience? I liked receiving little bits and pieces to try out before investing in the full size. -Would you recommend Birchbox to a friend or family member? I would but the price is a tad steep for what you get - 5 samples for about £2 each. Some of the products can be hit and miss e.g. the thermotherapy mask. However, this might change if you subscribe and fill in a profile as it'd hopefully adapt to your preferences.

My favourite product was the gold face mark closely followed by the jasmine scented sleep mask. Anything that involves an excuse to lie down and relax!

Self care is not my specialty so nearly all the products and brands were new to me and I really enjoyed trying them all.

I would definitely buy the face mask. The solid deodorant is great too.

I liked the blue and silver box best. So pretty.

What I liked best was the chance to take some time for myself and try new things.

I would recommend the boxes to a friend. They are expensive but I've put them on my Christmas list!

  • What was your favourite product? Why?

I actually really liked the charcoal sponge – although it was a bit mess I felt it left my skin lovely and clear when I had used it. I was surprised that the Benefit blush suited me really well and I a have actually bought that in full size and used the little one in my make up bag for work. I also really liked the thermotherapy mask – I had the gold one and it was intensely hydrating and I felt it really did give my skin a lovely glow. I also really liked the Polar Night Cream. You have not asked but my least favourite was the roll on sparkly eye glitter which came in the Nutcracker box – did not rate that at all, barely came out!

  • Did the Birchbox boxes give you a chance to try products or brands that you wouldn’t have otherwise? Which ones? Did you like them?

Yes. I was surprised actually that so many of the brands contained within my 3 boxes were ones I had not heard of. I consider myself to be quite into beauty so it was nice to come across products that I had not heard of/seen before. The thermotherapy brand impressed me – seems to be some science behind the products.

  • Which product(s) would you buy in future, now that you’ve tried them?

I think I would definitely buy another charcoal cleanser – although not necessarily that one due to the mess. I also would consider purchasing both the mask and the night cream mentioned earlier. And I have already purchased the Benefit blusher.

  • Which was your favourite box design? Why?

I actually really liked the Nutcracker design (my DD also love it). I just thought it was quite Christmassy and magical.

  • What did you like best about your Birchbox experience?

I get very bored with products easily so I liked that I got 15 new things to try. I did expect the contents to be slightly larger – maybe beauty advent calendar sized? However had I have done my research and it makes sense. I had discounted signing up to this kind of thing in the past because I thought that maybe the products would not be of great quality but it is actually a really good way to find barnds you wouldn’t necessarily have heard of and to give new products a try.

  • Would you recommend Birchbox to a friend or family member?

Yes, if they were a beauty junkie and not someone with especially sensitive skin who has to be careful which products they use. I think the boxes are absolutely lovely and a real treat – I intend to send several as gifts thought the year on the back of doing this product test.

What was your favourite product? Why?
I love masks and I really liked the charcoal mask. I felt my skin feeling tight, my skin felt purified of toxins and fresh.

  • Did the Birchbox boxes give you a chance to try products or brands that you wouldn’t have otherwise? Which ones? Did you like them?
I loved the birchboxes. It was such a treat when I EVENTUALLY received them. I try different products all the time and do not stick to one product so this gave me the chance to try things I had not already tried. I had 2 mascaras and I don't really wear mascara, so these felt a little useless. I loved the eye mask and the highlighter. I felt pampered and special with these boxes.
  • Which product(s) would you buy in future, now that you’ve tried them? I would buy the charcoal face mask.
  • Which was your favourite box design? Why?
I have to say that all the boxes were lovely and I cant pick a favourite. They were girly, bright, attractive, reusable and good quality.
  • What did you like best about your Birchbox experience?
I liked the surprise of seeing what the boxes contained and what products I could try and seeing the results.
  • Would you recommend Birchbox to a friend or family member?NO

My big negative was it took months for me to eventually get my boxes. I had to chase this with mumsnet who were fantastic/ they contacted Birchbox on my behalf and it took ages for the delivery. I sent a message on facebook and there was no response. the communication was poor . The concept is fab, the price is great, the products are fab but I don't think I would recommend birchbox. I would be concerned that the boxes wouldn't arrive and I would make someone disappointed, like I was (until I received the boxes). I would buy a one off box as a gift and buy way in advance to guarantee I had it to give as a present.
