This is the feedback thread for the 120 Mumsnetters who tested out Birchbox’s monthly beauty box delivery service. Each tester received 3 Birchbox boxes each containing 5 make-up, skincare, hair, and body products.

After a really rubbish year, I felt so lucky when the boxes turned up at my door, it was like Christmas Day! And I've loved being a tester for each of these products. Here's my thoughts:

• What was your favourite product? Why?

Definitely the Polar Night Cream. My skin feels so dehydrated from this cold weather and central heating, and this was so soothing and nourishing. I loved waking up to a plumped up glow!

• Did the Birchbox boxes give you a chance to try products or brands that you wouldn’t have otherwise? Which ones? Did you like them?

Yes lots! I'd never heard of Daily Concepts, Schmidt’s or Sand & Sky before, and I tend to be a bit of a 'routine' kind of girl. So I never would've reached for any of these unknown (to me) brands in case I didn't get on with them. So the Birchbox allowed me to experiment without wasting a whole load of money. I can honestly say that I loved all of the brands and products.

• Which product(s) would you buy in future, now that you’ve tried them?

The Benefit blusher, the Polar Night Cream and the Hydrotherapy mask.

• Which was your favourite box design? Why?

100% The Nutcracker one! It made me feel all festive and reminded me of my childhood. I love anything with a nostalgic feel to it.

• What did you like best about your Birchbox experience?

The opportunity to try out lots of different brands and products that I either hadn't heard of before, or that I might not necessarily have reached for when out shopping. It was also fab to test out some more high end products without taking a risk and blowing a load of cash on them when they might not have agreed with my skin or hair.

• Would you recommend Birchbox to a friend or family member?

Definitely! In fact, I'm going to treat my cousin to a subscription for Christmas.

I'd like to just thank Mumsnet and Birchbox first for giving me the opportunity to take part in this trial. I've wanted to try Birchbox for a while but could never justify another monthly subscription for something that I wasn't sure if I'd like.

I really enjoyed the trial, it was lovely receiving three whole boxes of products just for me! There were so many things that I wouldn't have bought full size before trying them, that I will in future happily purchase.

- What was your favourite product? Why?
There are three products in particular that I have used on a daily basis for the last two weeks but my favourite of these is the Daily Concepts multi-functional charcoal soap sponge for the October box. It makes my face squeaky clean, has cleared my pores, smoothed my face and dramatically reduced the amount of breakouts.
(I also love the Polaar night cream from the November box and the Benefit Box O' Powder from the September box).

- Did the Birchbox boxes give you a chance to try products or brands that you wouldn’t have otherwise? Which ones? Did you like them?
Absolutely! I don't often try new, expensive products as I don't like the thought of wasting money if I don't like something.
I'd never have tried the Polar night cream or the Paul & Joe foundation primer but absolutely love them!

- Which product(s) would you buy in future, now that you’ve tried them?
I'd happily buy several of the full size versions of the products (and already have them on my Christmas list):
Daily Concepts charcoal soap sponge
Sand & Sky pink clay treatment
Pola night cream
Benefit Box O' Powder

- Which was your favourite box design? Why?
My favourite design by far was the Nutcracker box. Coming up to Christmas, I think it just felt a little more seasonal and I'm a sucker for a theme!

- What did you like best about your Birchbox experience?
I really enjoyed having boxes of products that were just for me! I felt really spoiled and I enjoyed taking the time to try out new products. I also enjoyed being able to try smaller sizes of products without worrying too much about waste if they weren't right for me.

- Would you recommend Birchbox to a friend or family member?
Definitely! I've already spoken to some friends about the trial and a couple are interested to find out more.

What was your favourite product? Why?
Probably the spacemask sleepmask, that’s probably because I had seen it on Instagram and wondered if the hype was real....and then loving the packaging and the design when it arrived, I tried it first! It was soooo lovely and I had such a good sleep after using it. It was a lovely way to try new things!

• Did the Birchbox boxes give you a chance to try products or brands that you wouldn’t have otherwise? Which ones? Did you like them?

Yes it was great! I don’t really like to spend much on myself, i can feel guilty sometimes, especially if the product isn’t good. But with Birchbox I felt that you knew how much it would cost; and that there should be something you would like in the box! A mixture of sample sizes and fill sizes is also very good. It means that you get to try high priced items too. I loved the night cream too, it smelt lovely. And the roller eyeshadow is gorgeous and perfect for Christmas!!

• Which product(s) would you buy in future, now that you’ve tried them?

Probably the spacemasks as a special treat when I need to relax!

• Which was your favourite box design? Why?

The nutcracker! Ohhhh so so so pretty. I will never get rid of these boxes! I’m keeping them forever!!!! The boxes are like little drawers, I’ve filled mine with pens, hair clips and things!

• What did you like best about your Birchbox experience?

The variety!

• Would you recommend Birchbox to a friend or family member?

Yes I would. It made me feel like it was a real treat to myself!

What was your favourite product? Why? I had a few ‘favourites’. The polar night cream because it felt very rich and I think did help my complexion, even with countless night feeds! The charcoal soap sponge as that made washing my face very easy. Finally Schmidt’s natural deodorant as it really did work!

• Did the Birchbox boxes give you a chance to try products or brands that you wouldn’t have otherwise? Which ones? Did you like them? Definitely! All of the products! Most of them I hadn’t even heard of and have since looked them up online. I don’t think there was any product I disliked although the makeup I haven’t tried very much yet.
• Which product(s) would you buy in future, now that you’ve tried them? The three I listed as my favourites definitely - polar night cream, charcoal soap sponge and the deodorant. Possibly the spacemask too.
• Which was your favourite box design? Why? I did like the November design. It seemed a bit more elegant and special
• What did you like best about your Birchbox experience? Having new things to try out.
• Would you recommend Birchbox to a friend or family member? Possibly. It’s a great idea and the products I tried were all lovely so if they were showing an interest I would encourage them.

What was your favourite product? Why?
Two favourites, natural deodorant and charcoal soap. The deodorant was used by my teen dd with sensory issues who tends to sweat a lot. Not only did she not feel uncomfortable after application but there was no odour whatsoever. The other favourite would have to be the charcoal soap. My skin has a tendency to get oily but since using it there's been no issues. Unlike other soaps it's not dried my skin out either.

-Did the Birchbox boxes give you a chance to try products or brands that you wouldn’t have otherwise? Which ones? Did you like them?
None of the brand's in the birchbox were ones I'd tried before really. I especially like the polaar night cream which went on without feeling heavy or greasy. I also really like the benefit box o' powder ehich is never tried but am now a convert.

-Which product(s) would you buy in future, now that you’ve tried them?
Think in future I'll buy the deodorant, charcoal soap and the Dr Pawpaw lip balm. Possibly the benefit powder too but likely won't need that for a while.
-Which was your favourite box design? Why?
I liked the days like these box, it reminds me a song, which in turn reminds me a much loved person.
-What did you like best about your Birchbox experience?
Getting to try things I'd not try otherwise. Discovering new products without having to put in the effort to source them myself.

-Would you recommend Birchbox to a friend or family member?
I'm not sure of I'd recommend it, I think if there was a smaller box option it might be easier to get people to try it but there's not really anyone I know who's at in to beauty items they'd be willing to pay for something which is a bit hit and miss.

-What was your favourite product? Why?
I haven’t tried all the products yet, but my favourite so far was the Nuxe oil. It smells amazing, doesn’t feel oily on the skin, gave me great results and it’s multi purpose.

-Did the Birchbox boxes give you a chance to try products or brands that you wouldn’t have otherwise? Which ones? Did you like them?
Definitely, like the Daily Concepts soap sponge, i had no idea such a product existed! Or the Spacemasks self-heating eye mask, that was a relaxing experience.

-Which product(s) would you buy in future, now that you’ve tried them?
Nuxe Huile prodigieuse riche, Schmidt’s natural deodorant

• Which was your favourite box design? Why?

Honestly, i loved all 3 designs but really liked the colours and writing of the “days like these” box.

• What did you like best about your Birchbox experience?

The Birchbox experience gave me the chance to discover new products from really nice brands that i wouldn’t have had time to find otherwise. And the fact that it was going to be a surprise was really exciting.

• Would you recommend Birchbox to a friend or family member?

Absolutely!

I was so excited to take part in this trial. Have looked at signing up in the past but didn’t want to commit!

• What was your favourite product? Why?

I loved the benefit blush. When i first saw it I thought it was a really odd orange colour but on my cheeks it was completely different. I’ve been wearing it everyday since! Also love the Paul and Joe primer. I’m trying to use this one sparingly as it’s not an easy brand to find!

• Did the Birchbox boxes give you a chance to try products or brands that you wouldn’t have otherwise? Which ones? Did you like them?

Definitely. I hadn’t heard of many of the brands and some of the products seemed really unique. I liked the mixture of well known brands with lesser known ones. The hair mask was lovely and I’m waiting on an evening where I can use the face mask.

• Which product(s) would you buy in future, now that you’ve tried them?

Definitely going to be buying the benefit blusher when the sample runs out. I may buy the Paul and Joe primer if I can find it (seemed to be sold out already on the birch box site).

• Which was your favourite box design? Why?

I loved the nutcracker one (November). It seemed lovely and Christmassy and all the stuff inside was shimmery too.

• What did you like best about your Birchbox experience?

The excitement of finding out what was in all the boxes. I can see it being a lovely treat every month which is very tempting. I still have loads of the products to try which is exciting.

• Would you recommend Birchbox to a friend or family member?

I would if they were into beauty and makeup. If they aren’t that into trying different products I would be wary of them ending up with a pile of stuff that doesn’t get touched after a few months. I would also recommend them look out for a discounted package if possible.

I’m hoping for a January sale offer as I think it’d be a lovely post Christmas pick me up for me!

I only found one thing that didn't agree with me and I knew it was down to my own sensitivity. I thought the boxes were a great treat, I found some products I would never have none about that I actually really love and would buy/ plan to buy independently of the product trial.

• What was your favourite product? Why?

My favourite product, without a doubt was Daily Concepts Multi-functional Soap Sponge Charcoal. I have Rosacea so products on my skin are always hit and miss- focus on miss, this however was amazing and I can't recommend it enough. When I've ran out I will be replacing it because I am just a little bit in love with it!

I also really liked the Manna Kadar Cosmetics Diamond Dust Eye Shadow, it's beautiful! The Dr. Paw Paw balm was the best thing I have ever used on my lips, the Klorane Mango Butter conditioner made my hair so so soft! I actually found very few, little, no faults with the products that were included and this list isn't exhaustive of all my favourites.

• Did the Birchbox boxes give you a chance to try products or brands that you wouldn’t have otherwise? Which ones? Did you like them?

Absolutely. I hadn't even heard of some of the brands before. Things like Spacemasks, Paul and Joe, Polaar, Schmidt's. And yes, once I was used to them I liked all of them. The deodorant was amazing but was the only thing that irritated my skin- a genuine shame because it smelt divine and the smell lasted for ages!

• Which product(s) would you buy in future, now that you’ve tried them?

The Spacemasks- for my daughter, she absolutely loved it! Yes, she stole it off me. Dr PawPaw for definite and the Charcoal soap which I never ever want to be without. Ever.

• Which was your favourite box design? Why?

Difficult choice, they were all so different. The one I was most excited about was The Nutcracker so i'll say that I think. Otherwise I think they were all equally as beautiful and so handy. My dressing table has never looked so pretty!

• What did you like best about your Birchbox experience?

The opportunity to try some new products, something that was just for me too. It was a real treat. Genuinely, this was a real treat for me. I never buy myself make up or really bother with my appearance but since having the Birchboxes sent I went out and bought myself some new bits (liquid eyeliner- never used it before and thought it would like nice with the pretty eye shadow from The Nutcracker box) It was a genuine pleasure to take part and find some amazing products along the way. I thought the boxes were a great treat, I found some products I would never have known about that I actually really love and would buy/ plan to buy independently of the product trial.

• Would you recommend Birchbox to a friend or family member?

Yes and I already have, my sister in law rummaged through the boxes and was very impressed. I've given my husband subtle hints that a subscription would be a lovely Christmas gift if he can afford it and as he's been nicking some of the Dr PawPaw I hope her agrees. He also used some of the face cream...

• Did the Birchbox boxes give you a chance to try products or brands that you wouldn’t have otherwise? Which ones? Did you like them? Yes great little idea to have little tasters. I really liked the masks, the one in the pink tube, clay mask and the sheet space mask.
• Which product(s) would you buy in future, now that you’ve tried them? I have already ordered another paw paw, I have been wanting to try this for ages so was pleasantly surprised when I saw it. The space masks I really liked and have ordered another box and the polar night cream. I already have a full size nuke oil otherwise that would have also been on my list
• Which was your favourite box design? Why? I liked them all, the nutcracker was cute but I also like the floral purple box
• What did you like best about your Birchbox experience? It’s really exciting opening the boxes, like Christmas comes early. It’s a nice way to try a lot of products, however I could see a regular subscription getting a bit much.
• Would you recommend Birchbox to a friend or family member? Yes on a trial or every few month basis if that’s available

It’s often easy enough to find out what’s in the boxes so you can pick and choose which ones to buy

Firstly, thanks for letting me take part in this, it was really good fun and was such a brilliant treat!

• What was your favourite product? Why?

The Polaar Nuit Polaire cream was a joy. I ended up using it during the day too because it quenched my thirsty skin and felt so luxurious and smoothing. I just looked forward to putting it on every time. I also loved it for being a 'large sample' size - I got to try it properly over nearly two weeks so I could really tell if it was the right thing for me.

• Did the Birchbox boxes give you a chance to try products or brands that you wouldn’t have otherwise? Which ones? Did you like them?

Yes definitely. I would not have tried many of the products or brands to be honest. I might have tried the gold thermotherapy mask as a treat to myself but probably none of the others, including my favourite. I was really surprised to like the charcoal sponge and soap. I found it quite harsh to begin with but it has blitzed my pores like nothing else so it gets big love. I also ended up really liking the mango hair mask even though I don't like fruity smelling products it was so good on my hair I couldn't stop using it.

• Which product(s) would you buy in future, now that you’ve tried them?

The gold thermotherapy mask, the charcoal sponge and soap, and maybe the Polaar night cream if I'm feeling flush and in need of luxury.

• Which was your favourite box design? Why?

Ah, now if I'd known you were going to ask that I'd have kept them... They were all very pretty and I did appreciate that they were different and that thought and creativity had gone into them. Sorry designer people that's all I can remember...

I actually really loved it all, even though there were quite a few things that didn't work for me.

Yes if I knew they liked makeup and skin stuff already.

The polaar night cream - made my skin glow each morning - such a treat!

Oh definitely - I'm a mess of a stay at home mum and never buy beauty products. Lip balm is as exciting as it's been the last few years! It was such a revelation to find so many lovely little products that made me look a little bit nicer!

Maybe the night cream, maybe the deodorant? They were both great!

I liked October, very nice colours. The boxes in general are such a lovely part of Birchbox - a nice addition to my chest of drawers.

The surprise aspect, and the chance to pamper myself.

Probably the NutCracker one, even though I didn’t like the obvious advert, could have been more subtle. Loved the colours. Felt right for this time of year

Probably as one offs but seems a bit wasteful for a monthly subscription

My favourite products were the Polar night cream and the eye and face masks.

Yes, there were lots of products I wouldn't have tried without Birchbox. I hadn't tried any of the brands before except Benefit. Some brands were entirely new to me such as the Schmidt deodorant and the Manna Kadar eyeshadow.

I would buy the Polar night cream and Dr Paw Paw lip balm in future

My favourite box design was the Nutcracker, as I love things that have a Nutcracker theme. Lovely for Christmas.

What I like best about my Birchbox experience was getting the chance to try lovely beauty products which I wouldn't have tried otherwise. It's great to have a surprise present for myself. Everyone loves a surprise as long as it's a good one!

Yes, I would recommend Birchbox to a friend or family member who likes
to try new beauty products. There was a good range of easy to use products which I would actually use on a day to day basis.

What was your favourite product? Why? I liked the Paul and Joe face primer due to its luxurious feel on my skin and fragrance. I also liked the polar night cream and the lip salve.

Yes I’d never tried most of the brands such as aMika, Dr paw paw and Klorane. I really like the polar night cream.

I don’t buy fancy products mainly because I don’t think I can justify the cost (and don’t want to spend £30 on a face cream that is rubbish or doesn’t work for me)

Nutcracker, I love Christmas so it was perfect for me!

Having something just for me, that I didn’t have to go out and source and buy! also it was perfect timing as I went to a make up class and some of things that were recommended were in the box plus I now know what to do with all the different things!

What was your favourite product?
The amika - soulfood nourishing mask
Why?
It smelt absolutely gorgeous and made my hair feel wonderfully soft and hydrated.

• Did the Birchbox boxes give you a chance to try products or brands that you wouldn’t have otherwise? Yes!

Which ones? The winky lux strobing balm, spacemasks self heating eye mask and the manna karat cosmetics roller shadow. Did you like them? Yes.

• Which product(s) would you buy in future, now that you’ve tried them? The pawpaw balm, space mask eye mask, winky lux strobing balm, amika soul food mask I would most likely purchase in the future but all the other products I received were great too so I would consider more than what I just listed. I have since purchased and received 2 more birchboxes with even more products to love!!!x
• Which was your favourite box design? Why? I liked the September box because of the colours used but liked the floral prints used on the October box
• What did you like best about your Birchbox experience? I am so grateful and happy to have been given the chance to try out the Birchbox experience. It gave me the chance to try products I wouldn’t normally buy but now would. Some of the items I wouldn’t of even thought to search for because I didn’t know they existed which is what is great about Birchbox. It gives you new experiences. Each box is like a gift and a happy surprise. I don’t normally like surprises but for someone who doesn’t normally receive gifts this was a wonderful experience. Thank you.

What was your favourite product? Why? I loved the space mask and also the benefit blusher. The Dr Pawpaw was a fab product too!

• Which product(s) would you buy in future, now that you’ve tried them? Dr Pawpaw and the space mask!
• Which was your favourite box design? Why? I loved them all - the ‘drawer’ design makes them great to reuse. My dd has stolen the Nutcracker one though!
• What did you like best about your Birchbox experience? It was so nice to get something through the post just for me - it felt really indulgent.
• Would you recommend Birchbox to a friend or family member? Absolutely- they are a fab way to try new products.

The Mannakadar Diamond dust. Lovely & sparkly in time for all the Christmas parties.

There was a lot of brands I had never heard of before so it was good to try something new. I initially liked Schmidt’s deodorant. The smell was lovely, but it got a little crumbly/ messy after a few days use.
The Sand & sky pink clay was new to me. It was fab. I also liked the Benefit Gold Rush.

Which product(s) would you buy in future, now that you’ve tried them?
I would buy the Pawpaw cream, the Polaar Nuit polaire night cream and the Nuxe oil.

Which was your favourite box design?
Why? The September box. Lovely colours.

I liked the highlighting creme. I’ve used it on my eyelids too! Very versatile.

The polar night cream. It was rich without being greasy. Smelt great and made my skin feel fab.

There were a few products that I wouldn’t have brought but received in the box. It was nice to have the benefit blush/bronzer. The face masks were a nice treat as well. I had looked at the space mask and seen it on lots of Instagram accounts but would never have brought it myself.

I have loved trying the boxes and the products however I still feel that they are a touch too expensive for what is mostly free sample size trial products and make up products that have been in colours that I wouldn’t use.

What was your favourite product? Polar Night Cream is an absolute dream! I have the most sensitive skin that always gets sore and angry with new products, but this was so brilliant!
Did the Birchbox boxes give you a chance to try products or brands that you wouldn’t have otherwise? Absolutely! Which ones? Benefit Did you like them? I ignored Benefit for a while (not believing the hype) but this product was awesome! I am a convert!!

I loved the diamond dust from then Nutcracker box, it was as colour I wouldn’t usually go for but absolutely loved it. I had lots of compliments when I wore it at the weekend.

Which ones? Did you like them? The natural deodorant was also lovely and I would buy again.
