Top tips for a big clear out? For me, it is having piles! One pile for selling, one for the charity shop, one for keep and one for bin. I also tend to have an ‘undecided’ pile so if I’m not dure about something I don’t put too much pressure on myself to decide straight away.

My tips for a BIG clear out, arrange some time in your diary that you can dedicate to decluttering.
While many people think you ought to be totally ruthless, I think if you're not sure about something, put it away, if you still haven't used it three months later then get rid. There's been so many times I've regretted throwing things away!
Anything that can be sold or given away stick on gumtree or eBay, then use your Hippo bag for the rest!

GruffaloPants · 01/04/2018 09:26

My golden rule has got to be: Be Ruthless. Get things out. Don't just rearrange stuff into new pikes, boxes etc.

Strax · 01/04/2018 09:48

My golden rule would be - check that hippobag cover your area before you buy one! We foolishly bought one a few years ago when we were moving, only to discover they don't collect from our postcode Sad. Still, we've used the bag a few times to store logs in etc.
We have resorted to traditional skips instead.

Sweep (sort through) the house from left to right, and the room from left to right so it's left right 😁

My golden rule for having a clear out is that when the kids stop looking after their toys, it is time for us to get rid of some. They then gets to choose what to keep or throw, and we all do the same. Then we fill charity shop bags and have a clear out.

My golden rule is to just do it. Start early and get chucking stuff out.

It looks really tempting. I see it says that 90% of the materials are recycled, which is good. What happens to the rest?

sealight123 · 02/04/2018 13:40

My golden rule for a clear out is to plan it.
Set day, set rooms, even a clear out crew with you, and a set reward for afterwards :)

We're doing a big clear out of my daughters room next week and she has picked a day out as her reward for doing all that hard work. However, what she doesn't know is when she goes for the day out with me my partner is going to decorate her room as a surprise.

Always have a purpose for the clear out...it means you are more likely to go through with it :)

Wow they sound great, I'd definitely consider using one of these instead of a skip when we clear our garden in the summer!

PorridgeAgainAbney · 02/04/2018 19:28

Golden rule for having a clear out:

Always allow tons of time for sitting down and losing yourself in the books/photo albums/home-recorded cassettes of the Top 40 before you throw them out.

Always have several bags on the go: Giving (charity shops or things that specific people would probably like), Selling, Recycling and Landfill. I always call the last one "landfill" rather than "bin" because it really makes me think about all the options available for that item before resigning it to that bag as a last resort.

CathBookworm · 02/04/2018 19:37

Non tester here. Top tips for clear out- have your partner or friend help you as they can talk you out of keeping things you don’t need. Donate what you can to charity as then you’ll feel better about parting with it.

Tip: Get everyone helping!...the more the merrier...above all don't try to undertake the task on your own!....however tempting this may well be! :

Jeffingandeffing · 02/04/2018 23:31

Non tester - When clearing out stuff, I always ask myself this question. If I was moving house would this make it into the removal van or not? If I wouldn’t pack it - then I get rid!

Oddbutnotodd · 03/04/2018 08:53

Non tester. Start small if you have difficulty parting with things. Decluttering takes longer than you think. Let things go and take a picture if it’s sentimental if that helps. Definitely remove from home ASAP. Would I buy this now? If not, why am I keeping it. If it was a gift don’t feel guilty letting it go.

lolly2011 · 03/04/2018 12:08

Non tester - My golden rule is ask yourself if you've used it in the last 6 months? Then decide if you really need it. It is very easy to over clutter, just in case.

pinkflump · 03/04/2018 16:46

Share your golden rule for having a big clear out!

Be ruthless! If you haven't used it for 6 months, you don't really need it Grin

Golden rule for having a big clear out - grab a bin bag and a charity bag and fill them both.

Hmumto3 · 03/04/2018 19:48

Non tester - be brutal don't be a hoarder get rid of things that you know you will not use or is just taking up unnecessary space.

Salmonpinkcords · 03/04/2018 21:15

Non tester here - be ruthless and dont do it in sight of the children! My children end up “saving” all the things I’m trying to get rid of!

CaviarAndCigarettes · 03/04/2018 22:51

Non tester here.
My golden tip is to wait for my hoarder four year old to be asleep!
My beautiful child lays claim to anything and everything we are thrown by out and sometimes wins...he has a little stash beneath his bed!
When he is asleep my key tip is to ask yourself,
"Do I use this"
"Have I used this"
"Can anything else do the same job?"

We have a small home and a large family. This process saves A LOT of space!

Landed · 03/04/2018 23:16

Non tester tip, enlist the help of the most ruthless person in your household and do not argue with them. My DD is far better than me!

colleenw · 04/04/2018 10:21

My golden rule with clearing out is if it hasn't been used or needed for 12 months (covers all seasons) then throw it!

Georgiamh84 · 04/04/2018 22:49

Tips for a clear out - be ruthless. It's too easy to cling to something once-loved when you stumble across it. If you've not missed it, bin it! Also, make to remove the kids before starting the clear out or nothing will ever be thrown away.
