This is the thread for the 24 Mumsnetters who tested out the HIPPOBAG and rubbish removal service.

Non-testers in order to be entered into a prize draw, where one MNer will win a £200 voucher, please answer this question: Share your golden rule for having a big clear out!

If you don't fancy reading the full thread, you can take a look at the highlights here: Mumsnetters review HIPPOBAG

Here’s what HIPPOBAG have to say: “HIPPO is the UK’s market leader of flexible waste solutions – Trusted by millions for waste removal across the UK, the iconic yellow HIPPOBAGs are the perfect way to dispose of household, garden or building waste. Arriving flat-packed and ready to use, customers are amazed at the amount of waste HIPPOBAGs can hold, and delighted by the 5-star collection service conducted by a fleet of HIPPO collection vehicles which crane the filled HIPPOBAGs from even the tightest of spaces. HIPPOBAGs are ultra-strong, holding up to 1.5 tonnes of waste, with the perfect size bag available for every job.”

Testers please answer the following feedback questions:

  • Which size HIPPOBAG did you use?
  • What did you use your HIPPOBAG for? Have you ever used one before?
  • What means of waste removal have you used in the past? (skip, going to the tip, man & van etc.)
  • What did you like most about the HIPPOBAG?
  • How did you find the collection experience and the overall quality of the service?
  • Based on your experience, would you use HIPPO again in the future? And recommend to friends?

All testers who post the required feedback will be entered into a prize draw where one tester will win a £100 voucher of their choice (from a list).

Thanks and good luck

  1. We used the Midibag. We definitely could have done with larger but it was good to trial.
  2. We have not used rubbish removal before but we had been considering getting a skip as we have lots of work we are doing in both the house and the garden. We filled the bag with broken fence panels and other wood items
  3. We usually just fill up the car and go to the tip but due to the level of rubbish and waste we need to remove it was much easier to have the rubbish collected.
  4. The process was so easy. The bag arrived flatpacked and arranging collection was straightforward and quick.
  5. The service was excellent. The representative I spoke to on the phone was very professional and friendly and arranged the collection very quickly. Delivery of the bag made it much easier than having to be home for a skip delivery.
  6. I would consider using Hippobag again however I would need a much larger bag for it to be worth it. I think I would also look out for special offers as otherwise it might be better to get a regular skip. I would recommend them to friends and family as the service and ease of use were exceptional.

Non tester. My golden rule for a clear out would be to make sure the kids are kept well away as they want to keep everything!!

BloodyWorried · 27/03/2018 22:24

Non-tester: Set aside the time (properly where there is nothing else to do and no reason to rush) and be methodical (start in a room, work your way through the room putting away or storing in piles: belongs somewhere else / bag for charity / bag for bin / needs further consideration). Once the room is complete take items for elsewhere and dump them in that room ready to tidy when you are doing that room - if the room has already been done put it away properly.

WhereDoAllThePokemonGo · 27/03/2018 23:09

Non tester. If you have managed without something for over a year, then you don't need it and it should go in the bin!

SalutHallo · 27/03/2018 23:21

Non tester clear out Golden rule : only keep things that bring you joy! Stolen from Marie Kondo but so helpful!

Myr4 · 27/03/2018 23:59

Non tester.
If you've not used it in the last 12 months, chuck it!
What's the worst that can happen? You'll need it a week after you've dumped it. Well, it's not the end of the world, you can go out and buy another!

del2929 · 28/03/2018 00:31

non tester-
if you havent used it in the past 2 weeks= get rid

SusanWalker · 28/03/2018 10:42

Do it by myself. I'm not a hoarder (apart from books and knitting/crochet stuff) so am quite good at chucking stuff. Ds has autism and hates for anything to go, even broken bits of wood!

I could actually use a hippo bag as I have no car at the moment and I have a jumble of stuff to go to the tip.

ilovekitkats · 28/03/2018 11:10

Non tester. When you declutter, find a home for everything. You’re allowed one box for misc items but everything else needs a home. NEVER throw out toys when your child is around Grin

kateandme · 28/03/2018 12:45

non tester.be ruthless but not hard on yourself.there are many that say oh just chuck it if you haven't used for so and so a ttime.but some people really struggle with hoarding tendencys.so open up enough time for yourself.dont overthink the items and there significance to you,how you were when you got them and how you are now.its ok to get rid of really treasured things at the time too.youll not foreget them and how they effected your wellbeing will be carried through.let the pieces themselves go though is ok to do.
no guilt.
a maybe pile for me is a guilt pile, once to brood over whether to get rid of or not! so either think keep it or not ,if you can.

UpOnDown · 28/03/2018 15:16

Non-tester: My golden rule is start with one room, and sort into keep, bin, recycle and freecycle/sell.

jacqui5366 · 28/03/2018 15:38

Non-tester Share your golden rule for having a big clear out!

If you have not used or needed it for 12 months then you do not need so donate, recycle, or clear it out.

Winningbeauty · 28/03/2018 15:51

My key rule is always to start with everything I haven’t used for a year, that stuff all goes first.

starlight36 · 28/03/2018 19:40

Anything which is broken and isn't easy to repay or doesn't do what it was bought to do needs to go.

DaisyDando · 28/03/2018 21:59

I'm finding this so tempting! I'd relish a good clear out and I'd never heard of a Hippo Bag before.
My top tip is to chuck stuff away in multiples of ten. So, for example, I'm not going to have a coffee, until I've put 30 items in a bin bag.

My golden rule for having a good clearout is to get the whole family on board. Get the kids to sort through and make piles of things to throw out or to be given away.

ILikeBigBumpsAndICannotLie · 28/03/2018 22:52

Non tester and gutted I missed this. Golden rule for a clear out is...to have the husband out of the house, and stuff gone immediately so bags can't be rootled in and stuff rescued. Found this out after I discovered we paid someone to bubble wrap and transport a broken polystyrene ceiling rose we had chopped off a ceiling seven years previously... just in case.

Pixiedust1973 · 29/03/2018 00:12

Non-tester. (Want to get a Hippo Bag now though after reading these reviews!) My golden rules for decluttering are; have an early night the night before in preparation for a busy, tiring day. Have a good breakfast & drinks & snacks on hand for energy boosts. Most importantly, fill the fridge with beer/wine or your drink of choice for when you're done & have your local takeaway number on speed dial. No way will you want to cook! Have fun! Smile

SillyMoomin · 29/03/2018 07:03

Non tester;

Golden rule for having a clear out is be ruthless!!

Look at it, make a decision, tidy away or throw away. Decide in 10 seconds. Be brutal!

JellySlice · 29/03/2018 07:17

Non-tester.

Golden rule for a big clear-out:

Set a date and Just Do It. Get up, get dressed, get breakfast and get on with it. If you've already procrastinated this long it'll be all too easy to procrastinate for yet another hour....day...week. So focus!

Treaclespongeandcustard · 29/03/2018 07:18

Non tester - my golden rule would be always wait until nobody else is around, then you have free reign of the bin. Don't tell anyone what you threw, they literally never notice. Grin

BothersomeCrow · 29/03/2018 08:13

Non-tester but have used them for a house clearance and they were very good.

Thought about using them recently to take garden waste and paving slabs but for over 4 tonnes a skip was much cheaper. But the convenience of something you can keep flat and then fill at leisure is great for household junk and smaller weights.

SmileyShazza · 29/03/2018 11:11

My golden rule for having a big clear out is to be RUTHLESS.

If you've not used it, worn it, seen it because it's been hidden in a box, loft or garage then off it goes!

I create four piles - sell, charity shop, recycle and dump and sort each thing accordingly as I come across them.

Amber0685 · 29/03/2018 12:37

My golden rule for having a clear out is to get someone to look after the kids! Otherwise nothing will get thrown out.
