This activity is closed

We’ve got together with Simply Beef & Lamb to find 100 MNers to take part in Love Lamb Week and test out 1 of 5 new lamb recipes. Each tester was sent either: garlic & mustard marinated lamb steaks, lamb caesar salad, lamb leg steaks with a paprika & herb rub, teriyaki lamb stir fry or a quick lamb wrap recipe to try with a loved one.

Here’s what Simply Beef & Lamb have to say: “We’d like to give parents the confidence to cook with lamb midweek, using lamb leg steaks as an easy introduction. They are versatile, relatively low price and can be cooked in less than 30 minutes.”

If you’ve taken part in this test, Simply Beef & Lamb would like you to post on this thread, answering the questions below:

  • Which lamb dish did you cook? Did you and your loved one enjoy the taste?
  • How easy did you find the dish to cook?
  • Do you consider it to be a healthy meal?
  • Did you consider the dish to be good value? What made it good value?
  • Would you buy lamb leg steaks again? If so why?

We’d also love to see some photos of the finished #lovelamb dishes and/or the cooking process, so please do share some on the thread if you can!

All those who give the required feedback will be entered into a prize draw where one MNer will win a £300 voucher of their choice (from a list).

Thanks and good luck!

  • Which lamb dish did you cook? Did you and your loved one enjoy the taste?

Lamb Teriyaki. We found it just ok so probably wouldn't cook it again.

  • How easy did you find the dish to cook?

Very easy too cook.

  • Do you consider it to be a healthy meal?

We added lots of veg so that was good however the sugar content of both the sauce then the added made it somewhat unhealthy.

  • Did you consider the dish to be good value? What made it good value?

As previous posters have said £10 for a midweek meal at home is quite a lot however we did manage to get 2 adult and 2 toddler meals out of it.

  • Would you buy lamb leg steaks again? If so why?
I would and do buy regularly but wouldn't to this recipe again and will stick to Greek style cooking with lamb.

  1. I cooked the leg steaks with a herb and paprika rub. We did enjoy the taste, although next time I will use fresh herbs as dried are just too overpowering and make the dish taste cheap.
  1. So easy. It's a perfect midweek meal as there is no planning ahead, just a few steps to a really yummy dish.
  1. Yes really healthy. The leg steaks were lean without being dry, so it actually feels more indulgent than it actually is.
  1. Very good value. The steaks are much cheaper than chops and completely bone free which I much prefer. The ingredients used are generally store cupboard staples, and once you've bought them they last for plenty of other meals.
  1. I will definitely buy them again. They're so quick and easy to cook with barely any fuss which is perfect after a long day. I'll be trying out other recipes with them as well.

  • Which lamb dish did you cook? Did you and your loved one enjoy the taste?
I cooked the lamb ceaser salad. We did enjoy the taste! I have never thought of putting lamb in a salad and it was great. I liked the dressing but I'm not sure I liked it enough on lamb to make the dressing again.
  • How easy did you find the dish to cook?
Really easy and simple. It didn't take too long.
  • Do you consider it to be a healthy meal?
Yes, I did. I would add more vegtables in my salad if I wasn't following a recipe.
  • Did you consider the dish to be good value? What made it good value?
It wasn't drastically expensive but not great value either. It had ingredients that I wouldn't normally buy like the anchovies amongst other things.
  • Would you buy lamb leg steaks again? If so why?
Yes I would as they are really nice, and we love eating lamb.

Hmmm, from the thread title, I thought there was a voucher to be won from reading the recipe feedback, for non-testers.
But nay.
Sound like good recipes though. I would like to try the mustard and garlic one.

  • Which lamb dish did you cook? Did you and your loved one enjoy the taste?
The lamb steak paprika and herb rub. We enjoyed the meal. It was a hit, back to back
  • How easy did you find the dish to cook?
I found it to be super quick. Very easy
  • Do you consider it to be a healthy meal?
Yes I do
  • Did you consider the dish to be good value?
Hmmmm, with my family we def had to increase the portions for the adults. But my kids adored it. I would actually make this occasionally as a treat What made it good value?
  • Would you buy lamb leg steaks again? If so why?
I would definitely try it. It was a hit back to back. My family voraciously cleared the plate and I forgot to take a picture in my haste. It's really healthy especially as I am on a low carb diet I ditched the potatoes.

  • Which lamb dish did you cook? Did you and your loved one enjoy the taste?
I cooked the Teryaki Lamb Stir Fry - it was a very tasty dish. I wasn't expecting to enjoy it as much as it did as I consider lamb to have quite a distinctive taste, but it matched the stir fry flavours well.
  • How easy did you find the dish to cook?
While the recipe called for lean lamb steaks, our local tesco only had one kind of lamb steak, so cutting off the fat to then cut the steaks into strips was a slightly laborious process. Aside from that, the recipe was very quick and easy.
  • Do you consider it to be a healthy meal?
On the whole. Lamb is a great source of protein and iron and the rainbow pack of veggies would have provided a wide array of phytonutrients. I do question the sugar content of the dish, although to be completely honest I didn't check the levels of the sauce itself - but brown sugar was also added so the dish was likely to be high in sugar overall.
  • Did you consider the dish to be good value? What made it good value?
While other cuts of lamb, such as leg and mince are usually quite expensive, lamb steaks did offer good value. I think buying fresh veggies, rather than a prepared pack would offer better value, but would add to the preparation time so one would need to consider which was more important!
  • Would you buy lamb leg steaks again? If so why?
Potentially - it was very tasty and worked very well in a stir fry but I would probably opt for a pack of beef strips for ease. If there were lamb strips available I would certainly give them a go!

  • Which lamb dish did you cook? Did you and your loved one enjoy the taste? I was selected to try the lamb wraps, and yes, we did both enjoy the taste. I would perhaps use fresh, finely chopped mint and popped mustard seeds with the yogurt as I found the supermarket mint sauce too sweet.
  • How easy did you find the dish to cook? It was quick and very simple. And ideal for cooking staight after work for the children. They 'helped' stir the yogurt while the lamb was cooking.
  • Do you consider it to be a healthy meal? I would personally take out the rice and add more vegetables for it to be healthy.
  • Did you consider the dish to be good value? Lamb is more expensive and leg steaks did cost more. It could be a bit of a weekend treat quick fix. What made it good value? The additions, ie the rice and wraps were very cheap and the wraps can be homemade very easily.
  • Would you buy lamb leg steaks again? If so why? I would as I found it tasty but again, more for every so often due to price.
I loved the recipe but at the moment our weekday meals need to be quick and cheap so this didn't quite tick those boxes.
allybird1 · 04/09/2017 21:04
  1. I tried the quick lamb wraps. I wanted to try this recipe as I thought it would be something I could make with the children.
  2. I found the dish easy to cook as there wasn't much prep to it. I used boil in the bag rice to save time and bulk of our a little.
3.I found it a fairly healthy meal. You didn't need much oil and there wasn't any excess fat etc. I used low fat yoghurt as well. The side salad helped too. I could have used brown rice or cous cous and some more vegetables.
  1. Lamb is obviously more expensive than chicken but I found it more filling. Also you could bulk it out with more vegetables.
  2. I would buy lamb steaks again as I enjoyed the taste. It was tender and less chewy than pork and easier for the children to eat.

  • Which lamb dish did you cook? Did you and your loved one enjoy the taste?
Paprika and herb rub. It was ok, but I wasn't that keen on the texture of the dried herbs.
  • How easy did you find the dish to cook?
Very easy.
  • Do you consider it to be a healthy meal?
Yes, if choosing steaks on the leaner side - the supermarket had some steaks that were very fatty. We had lots of veg with ours too.
  • Did you consider the dish to be good value? What made it good value?
Yes, the steaks were reasonably priced I thought, and no waste. Also not loads of ingredients required, so I didn't have to buy lots of different herbs and spices only to use a little and have them lying around
  • Would you buy lamb leg steaks again? If so why?
Yes, I think they would make a good midweek meal and a change from our usual choices.
kafelnikov · 04/09/2017 22:56
  • Which lamb dish did you cook?

We cooked the quick lamb wraps.

Did you and your loved one enjoy the taste?

Yes, although the lamb was a little chewy with the cooking times given..maybe because we used leg steaks rather than stir fry and didn't slice it fine enough? It reminded us of holidays to turkey with the mint and yoghurt dressing.

  • How easy did you find the dish to cook?

Very easy.

  • Do you consider it to be a healthy meal?

As I am following slimming world, we used wholemeal wraps, fat-free Greek yoghurt, and fry-lite (instead of normal oil) and served with a salad, so yes.

  • Did you consider the dish to be good value? What made it good value?

Lamb leg steaks are quite pricey but the two I bought bulked out with the rice easily served 4 so it wasn't too bad.

  • Would you buy lamb leg steaks again? If so why?

Yes, they were lean and tasty and I think if we'd have sliced them finer or cooked a bit longer they'd have been really succulent.

  • Do you consider it to be a healthy meal?
yes, use lots of vegatables, oil
  • Did you consider the dish to be good value? What made it good value?
yes very good. Good quality of meat
  • Would you buy lamb leg steaks again? If so why?
of course, lamb is very good meat, perfects for kids
kateandme · 05/09/2017 07:46

got my voucher through.
we made the mustard and garlic lamb and it was fab.
I think lamb is a gorgeous meat and isn't eat enough of.
usually we have stuck to roast joints so this was nice to try.
mustard is such a useful condiment to put in dressing and sauces and one people don't do or know about enough I think.it adds such depths, bite.or flavouring to dishes.
I don't like how expensive lamb is.i often find we aren't quite getting the amount wed like in an ideal serving as its so so expensive.
it was easy to cook..i should deff marinade more.
I would like to buy them but I have to say I am often put off more through cost so I think I casually skim over it without even noting why but it does stem from cost.

Mellington · 05/09/2017 13:07
  • Which lamb dish did you cook? Did you and your loved one enjoy the taste?
^I cooked the 'Garlic and Mustard Marinated Streaks', we both enjoyed it very much.
  • How easy did you find the dish to cook?
Super easy, marinate and then onto the griddle, we'd have loved to have done them on the barbecue but the weather didn't allow.
  • Do you consider it to be a healthy meal?
Yes, I cooked ours with fresh vegetables as the weather was a bit dire for the suggested salad but if we did it with a barbecue in future we'd do it with a large bowl of salad, the mustardy potato salad was great I used a mixture of Dijon and wholegrain for texture and flavour and added in some spring onion for a bit of texture.
  • Did you consider the dish to be good value? What made it good value?
Yes, very good value as apart from the apple juice we had a lot of the ingredients in the cupboard and you can basically serve them with what ever you have, veg, salad, cous cous salad etc, it gave us some new ideas for lamb marinades
  • Would you buy lamb leg steaks again? If so why?
We buy and marinade lamb quite often, we buy ours from a local producer so we usually tend to buy the cuts that are in stock, rather than a specific cut but we would definitely buy lamb steaks again. We'll definitely be adding this to the next barbecue we do.

- Which lamb dish did you cook? Did you and your loved one enjoy the taste?
We made lamb leg steaks with a paprika and herb rub. The lamb itself was lovely, far better than i expected, but the herb rub was overpowering. The measurements were also totally off, asking for 15g of herbs when an entire bottle is 13g! However, only my daughter (who doesn't like most meat) didn't like it. I would have said before this that I didn't like lamb at all, so was pleasantly surprised to enjoy it!

- How easy did you find the dish to cook?
Very easy. We cooked it under the grill and it was super simple. I made sweet potato wedges to have alongside with a bit of paprika and garlic salt, which complemented the lamb really well, and broccoli.

- Do you consider it to be a healthy meal?
Yes.

- Did you consider the dish to be good value? What made it good value?
No, I'm afraid not. The lamb steaks were expensive, £4 for two, so when cooking for 4 people and including the cost of the veges and herbs, it cost me more than the £10 voucher I was given - the first time that's ever happened in a food trial.

- Would you buy lamb leg steaks again? If so why?
Maybe as a special treat, or if they were on special, but no, not as a regular mid-week meal. It was just too expensive.

I really enjoyed the chance to try lamb though having not eaten it for years! So thanks for having us as a testing family!

mbb1 · 05/09/2017 18:07

I made quick lamb wraps, which were very tasty & v easy to make. I made it a second time but without the rice which we actually preferred. I do think it was a healthy choice but more a light snack than a meal. I probably wouldn't call it good value because lamb is so expensive that we don't have it v often. I would but lamb leg steaks again but only as a treat because of the cost

Flamingosrule · 06/09/2017 00:12
  • Which lamb dish did you cook?
I cooked the Garlic and Mustard Marinated Steaks

Did you and your loved one enjoy the taste?
Yes we all found them really tasty (myself and OH, Children - 18, 10, 9)

  • How easy did you find the dish to cook?
It was very easy ... the marinade was very quick to make and they cooked quickly on the BBQ
  • Do you consider it to be a healthy meal?
Yes, no oil added and the steaks didn't seem as fatty as some lamb meat. we had it with a large side salad ...
  • Did you consider the dish to be good value?
Yes... kind of. Lamb is an expensive meat to buy. To be honest, I only ever buy lamb when it's on offer. Saying that, I only ever tend to look at lamb legs / joints... so wouldn't normally even look at lamb steaks!

What made it good value?
The ingredients for the marinade are normal cupboard items for me

  • Would you buy lamb leg steaks again? If so why?
Yes, I definitely would. I normally think of lamb as quite a fatty meat, but the steaks weren't fatty at all .. and were very tasty and quick to cook! And it made a lovely change! I'm also very keen to try some of the other recipes - in particular, the herb and paprika rub one!
TitsalinaBumSqoosh · 06/09/2017 09:39
  • Which lamb dish did you cook?
We cooked the lamb steaks with paprika and herb rub.

Did you and your loved one enjoy the taste?
Yes, very much so, it was a hit with the whole family.

  • How easy did you find the dish to cook?
Very easy and nice and quick too.
  • Do you consider it to be a healthy meal?
Yes I think so, I served it with sweet potato wedges and a big green salad so it was balanced and healthy.
  • Did you consider the dish to be good value? What made it good value?
Yes, it's only a few ingredients for a big taste, plus it can be served with a few combos of things to make it as cheap or as luxurious as you fancy.
  • Would you buy lamb leg steaks again? If so why?
Yes we will, its great to have a decent lamb recipe in my arsenal, I usually roast a while leg for Sunday dinner if I'm going to use lamb or curry a cheaper cut in the slow cooker. This is quick and easy for a midweek meal and doesn't break the bank. The kids all enjoyed it and I think it will works well if DH and I want a nice couples dinner if we're having an indoor date so I think it's very flexible.

Thanks for the opportunity, I'm going to have a look at the other recipes and feedback and have a go at some more of them.

Apologies for no picture, the family all piled in and scoffed or before I could take one!

  • Which lamb dish did you cook? Did you and your loved one enjoy the taste?
We cooked the lamb with a paprika and herb rub. It was lovely and we both enjoyed it. It was a nice change as we tend to cook lamb in hot pot / curry type dishes.
  • How easy did you find the dish to cook?
It was straightforward to prepare and cook - a very easy midweek dinner.
  • Do you consider it to be a healthy meal?

With veg and new potatoes it was very healthy - particularly as we grilled the lamb.

  • Did you consider the dish to be good value? What made it good value?
It was quite good value. We love lamb but don't buy it every week. We had most of the dry ingredients in already and serving the lamb with new potatoes and veg made it a very reasonably priced meal.
  • Would you buy lamb leg steaks again? If so why?
Yes - they're very tasty and easy to cook.
Ladylucky99 · 06/09/2017 19:10
  • Which lamb dish did you cook? Did you and your loved one enjoy the taste? We did the quick lamb wraps. Yes we did, both of us enjoyed it but the kids weren't as keen. Think it might have been a little too chewy for them
  • How easy did you find the dish to cook? Very easy and quick but I prefer lamb in slower cooked dishes as I find it can be quite chewy
  • Do you consider it to be a healthy meal? Yes
  • Did you consider the dish to be good value? What made it good value? No I though it was a little pricey compared to what our meals usually cost
  • Would you buy lamb leg steaks again? If so why? Due to the cost I would say no unfortunately
Teabird · 07/09/2017 13:36

Which lamb dish did you cook? Did you and your loved one enjoy the taste?
I made the lamb caesar salad

  • How easy did you find the dish to cook?
very easy and very quick
  • Do you consider it to be a healthy meal?
yes very healthy.
  • Did you consider the dish to be good value? Lamb is quite an expensive meat and I made my pwn croutons. But this came out as good value overall.
  • Would you buy lamb leg steaks again?
yes I would If so why?they were delicious.

  • Which lamb dish did you cook?
Did you and your loved one enjoy the taste?

Lamb ceasear salad. DH didn't like the dressing . I liked the salad and love lamb, but didn't like lamb in the salad for some reason. I thought the flavour didn't go well.

  • How easy did you find the dish to cook?

Very easy.

  • Do you consider it to be a healthy meal?
Yeah
  • Did you consider the dish to be good value? What made it good value?

Good value assuming you have loads of store cupboard bits like mustard and things which we did. The recipient did us two nights so that lamb itself was under £1.50 a night per person.

  • Would you buy lamb leg steaks again? If so why?

I really would. I adore lamb, but rarely use it at home. When I have it has been a roast of lamb or mince to make meatballs. The lamb steak seemed very lean and cooked very quickly. We often have home made curry for an evening meal and I'm going to find a fast curry I can use with lamb.

Thanks for letting us do the test- it has certainly put lamb onto our regular menu.

Which lamb dish did you cook? Did you and your loved one enjoy the taste?
I cooked the garlic and mustard lamb legs. Very tasty.

- How easy did you find the dish to cook?
This was the stand out good bit about this product test for me. It took a matter of minutes! Had to remember to prep the night before but almost zero effort for me. Felt like I was cheating. I did make a side salad as well but plenty of pre-prepared options for this or very little effort options if you really don't have time. I'll add as well that I'm not the usual cook of the house so doubly surprised it was so quick.

- Do you consider it to be a healthy meal?
In the context of a varied diet of course, but absolutely.

- Did you consider the dish to be good value? What made it good value?
Just under a tenner for two adults is very good these days if you're including a slab of meat in that.

- Would you buy lamb leg steaks again? If so why?
Absolutely. I always mean to buy British lamb more often - good free range pretty guilt free option (if you are a meat eater obviously!) but cooking it well can be an issue. I'll check out the other recipes I think.

  • Which lamb dish did you cook? Lamb leg steaks with a herb and paprika rub.
Did you and your loved one enjoy the taste? The taste was good but the dryness of the herbs was a bit unpleasant.
  • How easy did you find the dish to cook?
It was very easy to cook. Not a recipe as such, just slight prep.
  • Do you consider it to be a healthy meal?
It was healthy- no added fat and lean meat.
  • Did you consider the dish to be good value? What made it good value?
Not good value at all. Lamb is very expensive so we will still only have it now and again.
  • Would you buy lamb leg steaks again? If so why?
Probably, for a treat, but not necessarily this recipe.
