This is the feedback thread for those MNers who tested ScreenLimit parental control app.

Here’s what ScreenLimit has to say about the app:

“ScreenLimit is a parental control app that allows parents to remotely manage their children's screen time from a smartphone, tablet or web browser on any computer.

It works on multiple devices, cross platform on Windows PCs and laptops along with iPhones, iPads, Android and Amazon devices (not Kindle Fire Kids Edition).

Parents can set a daily time allowance, instantly block access to sites, schedule times of the day when devices cannot be used, allow or block specific apps (not iOS), send their children direct messages and reward them for good behaviour. The innovative, built-in rewards function gives children the chance to earn ‘bonus’ screen time in exchange for completing tasks and household chores.

We’re a small team of dedicated parents with a mission to ensure children have a balanced childhood. If you have any issues we’re here to help and will respond quickly! Simply drop us an email at [email protected]

Testers: please answer the following questions:
• Do you think ScreenLimit could be useful for parents to manage screen time?
• How user-friendly did you find ScreenLimit?
• What did you think about the rewards system?
• What does ScreenLimit do really well?
• Are there any other features that you would like to see?

Please also add a review of the app in the Mumsnet reviews section

Everyone who leaves feedback on this thread and fills in the feedback survey will be entered into a prize draw where one Mumsnetter will win a £200 voucher from the store of your choice.

NON TESTERS If you’re not testing, but would like the chance to win a £200 voucher for the store of your choice, please answer the following question by sharing your reply in the feedback thread below:

What app is the most used/misused by your children?

Thanks! And Good Luck with the prize draw!

Non-tester - yes, YouTube for us too.

I realised that I needed to put parental controls on their tablets when I discovered my youngest playing a sniper app! Sad

nerysw · 02/06/2017 06:31

Agh, posted too soon! All locked down tight parental control wise but Fruit Ninja would be played till their fingers bled if they were allowed.

Non-tester. Yes, it's another vote for YouTube. So useful for demos of stuff you want to learn/do and occasional episodes of appropriate children's programmes etc, yet SO full of dodgy adults dressed in Disney Princess/Marvel etc costumes that get through our filters with their innocuous child-appealing titles - so easily stumbled upon by curious kids clicking on a link...Angry If ScreenLimit can help us to manage that, and my older daughter's positively addictive watching of endless streaming of American teen 'drama' on her phone, then I want it NOW!

funkypyjamas · 02/06/2017 10:42

Non-tester: What app is the most used/misused by your children?

Cbeebies Grin

Sounds like an interesting product. We got put off You Tube when we used it for a few nights to distract DS during toothbrushing but inadvertently ended up one night with him grinning at animations of dinosaurs being ripped to pieces while we gaped at eachother over his head Shock.

Ntinyn · 02/06/2017 11:18

We have the Lego game apps on the iPad and my daughter is addicted to them,!

8 ball pool most used app and most misused as they seem obsessed by it. The interactive element make a it all the more addictive.

I tried to wean them off the screen by buying a real snooker table sold by Argos for £199. Great big lump of a thing that I don't even have space for. They played with it a handful of times and then went back to the app. Only time it's used now is when I insist on a tech free afternoon and stop responding to their moans of being bored. Then they may decide to pull the snooker table out.

Netflix isn't generally misused it is loved by my kids. You tube kids concerns me, as I feel my four year old could find inappropriate content

A few more messages from ScreenLimit:

"Dear Mummyeme,

Thank you for testing ScreenLimit.

What device(s) is your daughter using? We can differentiate between homework apps and games on Windows PC's, Android and Kindles, just not on iOS at the moment. We are working on an iOS solution for the future. If you are using any of those devices other than iOS please email me at [email protected] and I will gladly help get that set up for you.

With regards to the initial setup we are working on making that easier and more intuitive and will have a better solution in the coming weeks.

For your comment on the rewards system, you don't need to use rewards. We are in the process of upgrading that too so that instead of earning credits to spend on more screen time, you will soon be able to define rewards for non screen time activities such as a trip to the zoo.

If you have any other queries please don't hesitate in contacting me.

Kind regards,

Jeremy Drayton
CEO ScreenLimit"

From ScreenLimit:

"Dear Fourmagpies,

Thanks for testing, I'm sorry you found it difficult to set up ScreenLimit, we are working on a new set up wizard to simplify the process. We will look into the issues that you had with the spinner that flips between Blocked, Timed and Unlimited and see if we can improve this.

With regards to the messaging, the message initially pops up on the screen as a notification, if you then go into the app you can read the messages in the message section. We will work on making that clearer for future users.

ScreenLimit works on wifi and mobile networks, unfortunately devices must be connected in order to receive commands from our servers to be able to block/unblock etc.

We are in a constant state of fine tuning and improving the app, we are a start up business comprising a handful of dedicated parents with a passion to ensure that our children have a balanced childhood. I'm really keen for you to get the most out of ScreenLimit and would be delighted to run through your setup, please email me at [email protected] to get this sorted.

Kind regards,

Jeremy Drayton
CEO ScreenLimit"

From ScreenLimit:

"Dear Justamoment,

What devices do your kids use?

On Android, Amazon Kindles and Windows PC's we can block individual apps such as youtube, you can also put a time limit on all apps apart from say educational apps which could be allowed for an unlimited amount of time.

With all devices including iOS you can put a time limit on how much time your children use the devices and when the time is up they can't use the devices. You can also set times of the day such as night time when devices are inactive.

I hope that helps, if you want to know more then check out our website www.screenlimit.net where you can join the free trial.

Thanks,

Jeremy Drayton
