This is the feedback thread for the 100 Mumsnetters who are trying the Milton Solo Travel Steriliser and antibacterial surface wipes with their baby aged 1 and under.

Here’s what Milton have to say about the products: "Our single bottle travel steriliser can be used in a microwave or with cold water. It’s ideal when you’re out and about during the day, for holidays or for overnight stays –as you don’t then need to carry your usual bulky sterilisers with you. It sterilises from 2 minutes in the microwave and in 15 mins with cold water. We're really proud of the unique safety vent technology which increases the temperature inside for better sterilisation. We'd love to know what Mumsnetters think about it!"

Q1. Where have you used the Solo travel steriliser/ Milton Antibacterial Surface Wipes when out and about?
I planned to take the steriliser to my mum's but I'm afraid large size Dr Brown bottles are massive with all the bits and they didn't fit in that well - see photo with lid on top. Next to my main Milton steriliser which has seen me through bottle feeding two babies. Shame as otherwise it looks a good product. The wipes are great, we used them after a dog walk in the countryside when we'd helped a newborn lamb get back to its mum and were consequently a bit grubby!
Q2. How easy were the Solo travel steriliser and Milton Antibacterial Surface Wipes to use? Were the instructions easy to follow?
As per other testers, the instructions re tablets were contradictory. How would you easily quarter a large tablet??
Q3. Would you buy the Solo travel steriliser and/or Milton Antibacterial Surface Wipes again, if the price was reasonable?
Wipes yes but not the steriliser unless I had much smaller bottles. Also to anyone out there thinking of purchasing, check you can actually get the Milton tablets. My local (large) Tesco stopped selling these about 3 months ago and now I use Tesco own brand ( sorry Milton!).
Q4. Would you recommend both of these products to a friend?
Yes depending on their bottles.

Q1. Where have you used the Solo travel steriliser/ Milton Antibacterial Surface Wipes when out and about?

I've mostly used the steriliser at home but also when visiting my parents house 14 miles away and we took it with us for a short break in Scotland where we stayed in a hotel. The wipes have been everywhere with me, the park, shopping (to clean the nasty shopping trolley handles), to the petting zoo etc.

Q2. How easy were the Solo travel steriliser and Milton Antibacterial Surface Wipes to use? Were the instructions easy to follow?
The steriliser gave me some trouble the first few times I used it. The reasons for this were firstly when I tried to use the cold water sterilisation method it didn't seem to tell you in the booklet not to put the water in first. I went ahead and made it up according to the instruction book, put a tablet in, and then quickly realised if I was to put the bottle and teat etc in the steriliser it would over flow. Once you know about this Im sure it would be a very easy way to get bottles sterile.

I also used the steriliser in the microwave and loved that you could lay it on its side in smaller microwaves. I did find the lid difficult to screw on but once it's in place there are no leaks which was great. I would also say that with the unit being on the small side (which is why you'd purchase it I should imagine), it was a faff getting a doctor Browns bottle in as they come in 6 parts. This just meant that I needed to really think how Id get the parts in, and meant that I needed to put the funnel inside the bottle and squeeze the teat in around the side. It did all go in with the exception of the lid but that definitely wouldn't have put me off the product.

I loved the idea of the wipes, it seemed they would be great for the highchair when you are eating out (although I bring my own portable high chair out with me), also fab for cleaning buggy handles and at the park and supermarket to clean the trolley handles. I would say that I was disappointed they weren't wetter. I think they'd work better if not so dry - I wasn't 100% confident that they had killed the bacteria.

Q3. Would you buy the Solo travel steriliser and/or Milton Antibacterial Surface Wipes again, if the price was reasonable?

I would buy the steriliser again for certain if reasonably priced. I enjoyed how convenient this was to use - especially when we stayed in a hotel where the kettle was tiny and would have taken forever to sterilise the bottles with plain boiled water. It fitted beautifully into my changing bag and therefore came on the aeroplane with us.

I don't think Id purchase the wipes as I was disappointed they weren't more moist.

Q4. Would you recommend both of these products to a friend?

I would (and have) already recommended the travel steriliser its fab, the wipes werent for me.

Q1. Where have you used the Solo travel steriliser/ Milton Antibacterial Surface Wipes when out and about?

We've been on holiday to Centre Parcs this weekend. Although we have Mam bottles, the self sterilising function is only possible with a microwave which we didn't have in our hotel. So the Milton allowed us to feed our baby for the holiday... Always helpful.

The wipes were put in to use on the multiple baby change units we used.

Q2. How easy were the Solo travel steriliser and Milton Antibacterial Surface Wipes to use? Were the instructions easy to follow?

Extremely! No brainer really.

Q3. Would you buy the Solo travel steriliser and/or Milton Antibacterial Surface Wipes again, if the price was reasonable?

Yes, absolutely. We have another hotel stay coming up for a wedding. As I say, without buying either 100 bottles and sterilising them at home, or taking our microwave with us, this will be one of the only ways to feed her!

Q4. Would you recommend both of these products to a friend?

Definitely!

honeysucklejasmine · 09/05/2016 10:11

Steriliser in a tion this morning. Obviously can only do one bottle at a time. And the mam ones are a bit of a squeeze... But when the alternative is a starving baby, it's a small price to pay for the mild inconvenience.

This is a fantastic steriliser, have now used it on numerous long car journeys down the coast and just as simple as going to a friends who doesn't have baby equipment!

We are driving to France in July and we will definitely be taking this with us as our twins love their milk!!

Q1. Where have you used the Solo travel steriliser/ Milton Antibacterial Surface Wipes when out and about?
I've only used the steriliser at home so far (Breastfeeding so no need to sterilise that!) but the wipes have been excellent for dropped dummies, wiping sticky high chairs and car seat. I've used the steriliser in the microwave and with the tablets for sterilising breast pump, 1 bottle and dummies. It's the perfect size! We've actually put our big steriliser away and we're just using the travel one now.

Q2. How easy were the Solo travel steriliser and Milton Antibacterial Surface Wipes to use? Were the instructions easy to follow?
Both very easy to use. I like the pop up button on the steriliser but it's not very clear when it's fully down - it would be good to have a click. The lie-flat function in the microwave worked really well too.
The instructions on the wipes were clear and easy to follow.

Q3. Would you buy the Solo travel steriliser and/or Milton Antibacterial Surface Wipes again, if the price was reasonable?
Definitely. I'd particularly look for the travel steriliser if you're just needing to sterilise a pump and 1 bottle as other sterilisers are so bulky.

Q4. Would you recommend both of these products to a friend?
Yes for the steriliser, and the wipes are very good if you're using dummies. For other things (like wiping down a change mat) I'd probably just use baby wipes.

We used the travel steriliser on a two night hotel break as a cold water solution. The instructions very easy to follow and the steriliser was easy to use, except for some water spilling out of the top once the bottle and teats were placed in there. It was also useful to be able to sterilise comforters (dummys) in with the bottle as I would with a microwave steamer at home.
I plan to use the travel steriliser in the microwave when visiting Granny for the afternoon. The wipes are also a great idea for wiping comforters but as my daughter is very young (9 weeks old) I was a bit reluctant to use them in this way.
I would definitely buy the Solo travel steriliser and the wipes for travel/occasional use. I would also recommend these products to a friend.

Q1. Where have you used the Solo travel steriliser/ Milton Antibacterial Surface Wipes when out and about?

We have used the Milton steriliser when we went to a friends for the weekend. They don't have a baby; and I didn't want to pack the world! We also took the wipes with us! Thank goodness we did, they are so useful for wiping the dummy when dropped on the floor or stored in my pocket to give to baby!!

Q2. How easy were the Solo travel steriliser and Milton Antibacterial Surface Wipes to use? Were the instructions easy to follow?

*so easy to use. The steriliser opens, you pop the items in, fill it with cold water (which is really easy to find!!) and pop in a tablet, pop on the lid; and voila, the items are in the sterilising process without a microwave!!

The wipes are also a doddle, wipe and go. No need to rinse!!! *

Q3. Would you buy the Solo travel steriliser and/or Milton Antibacterial Surface Wipes again, if the price was reasonable

yes definetely. The wipes are pocket sized, so handy and definetely thought of with parents in mind.
The steriliser is big enough for a bottle but small enough not to take up too much room

Q4. Would you recommend both of these products to a friend?

yes I would. They were easy to use and I have full confidence in this brand

Q1. Where have you used the Solo travel steriliser/ Milton Antibacterial Surface Wipes when out and about?
I haven't been anywhere that I would take a steriliser yet. I think if I was going away for a night I would probably take it with me. I have used the steriliser at home however, in hte microwave. I have two sets of teats (different sizes) for my bottles depending on which milk I use. I have found the small steriliser very useful for sterilisiing just the teats and then storing them for use the next day.

I haven't used the surface wipes outside the house yet as I tend to use baby wipes as I am not paranoid about germs. I have used them however next to my formula machine, to wipe down the surface around hte machine and to wipe the spoons after use.

Q2. How easy were the Solo travel steriliser and Milton Antibacterial Surface Wipes to use? Were the instructions easy to follow?

I use Dr Brown bottles and found the steriliser a bit small for the bottle plus all hte other pieces. I also didn't know where I was supposed to put all hte pieces, inside the bottle or not. I found the instructions were printed in very small print. I have very slight long sight and I found these instructions very hard to read due to the size of hte font.

The instructions for the wipes are fine and simple to follow.

Q3. Would you buy the Solo travel steriliser and/or Milton Antibacterial Surface Wipes again, if the price was reasonable?

I don't think I would buy the steriliser again as I don't think I would use it enough but i would use the wipes as they are in a nice small handy pack.

Q4. Would you recommend both of these products to a friend?

Yes if I thought they would suit their needs.

Salukigirl · 10/05/2016 15:23

Oops, forgot my photo of me using it for the teats.

I took the steriliser on a weekend away and mainly used in the microwave rather than the tablets as the written instructions didn't mention that you could break up the tablets. It uses a lot of energy if you only have a low energy microwave, 6 mins each go which as you can on do one at a time I think is a lot. Size wise it's about half the size of my steriliser which fits 6 bottles in it so I would have rather taken my own on a weekend away. However I can see the benefit if you're using it for a day out but wouldn't recommend it for any longer. Wipes are useful to carry around in the changing bag and at home.

horseyhorseydonotstop · 10/05/2016 20:14

Q1. Where have you used the Solo travel steriliser/ Milton Antibacterial Surface Wipes when out and about?

Away visiting family and friends, out and about on day trips and on the ferry.
We do a lot of day trips and family live quite a bit away so was extremely handy.

Q2. How easy were the Solo travel steriliser and Milton Antibacterial Surface Wipes to use? Were the instructions easy to follow?

Really easy to use, the two options of use were great and convenient.
Surface wipes were very handy out and about and wiping down high chair tables in restaurants.
Instructions were clear and concise and made it really quick and simple to use.

Q3. Would you buy the Solo travel steriliser and/or Milton Antibacterial Surface Wipes again, if the price was reasonable?

Trialled them with DC number 4 and nearly out of bottles so nearly out of need for it but if I was back at the start of bottles would definitely purchase.
I do think it is more suitable to people using it on daytrips out and about or visiting family for a day, or an older baby who doesn't need too many bottles. or just one overnight trip. If you had a baby on 4/5 bottles a day would be quite time consuming to use and you would probably be better off bringing your own larger one.

Q4. Would you recommend both of these products to a friend?
Yes

Will load pictures as soon as I figure out how

horseylady · 10/05/2016 20:31

I took the steriliser away on holiday! Great and so easy to use. The wipes are also incredibly handy. They fit perfectly into my handbag so I can just wipe down high chairs/tables as necessary.

Wipes are easy to use. Steriliser is also easy to use too. I did struggle to get the lid off first time I used it. But I filled it too high. It's so easy in the microwave and as cold water.

I would use both products again if the price was right, especially the wipes and I would recommend it to friends and family!!! Both are great products.

The wipes were great - i love them! so easy and simple and handy sized.

The wipes definitly! My friends have been around when i have used them and have been equally impressed.

jumie · 10/05/2016 21:42

Q1. Where have you used the Solo travel steriliser/ Milton Antibacterial Surface Wipes when out and about?
I have used the Solo travel steriliser at home for quickly sterilising 1 bottle as well as when visiting family. The Milton Antibacterial Surface Wipes have been used at home for wiping the highchair, when having meals out for wiping surfaces and wiping supermarket trolleys.
The Solo travel steriliser is going to be more useful now that my DC is having less bottles and I don’t have to wait till I have used several bottles to run my larger steriliser. I also like that the steriliser can be used in the microwave if I run out of tablets.

Q2. How easy were the Solo travel steriliser and Milton Antibacterial Surface Wipes to use? Were the instructions easy to follow?
The Solo travel steriliser was really easy to use. There was no need for measurements as it clearly indicates the required water level. The sterilising tablet was also easy to break to the required size. The and Milton Antibacterial Surface Wipes are also very easy to use and 1 wipe goes a long way.

Q3. Would you buy the Solo travel steriliser and/or Milton Antibacterial Surface Wipes again, if the price was reasonable?
I will definitely buy the Solo travel steriliser and the Milton Antibacterial Surface Wipes again.

Q4. Would you recommend both of these products to a friend?
I will also recommend the Solo travel steriliser and the Milton Antibacterial Surface Wipes to a friend.

This steriliser and wipes have accompanied my son and I to various baby groups, on several trips to see family and friends who live a fair few miles away. The ease in using the wipes and the steriliser was enough that even my partner managed in it whilst watching football! One noticeable downside was the breaking of the tablets causing some mess. I am not too sure I would use the steriliser enough to justify paying for another system but the wipes are definitely something I will be stocking up on! If friends were looking for a compact, simple steriliser this system is definitely one I would recommend.

I went away for the weekend to my parents, so we took the steriliser with us there. It was great being some compact, leaving more room in the case. I've used the wipes for the changing mat when we have been doing nappy changes out and about.

Both items were very easy to use and the instructions were clear and straightforward.

Both items were very useful so they would be on my shopping list if the price was right!

The wipes are a great size and were very useful so I would definitely recommend these to a friend. The steriliser was a great shape and size, very easy to use so yes I would also recommend this.

I think travel wipes are great, even if you don't have babies.
When making use of some cafe's, restaurants and public toilets, there's no telling what bugs might be lurking.
A quick wipe around put's you at ease that things are hygienic for you and your children.

I'm heading on holiday next week so wanted to test everything before we go so I know how to use it and it's really easy and convenient to use! The instruction are really clear and it's so quick I really like that the tablet dissolves quickly so there's no hanging about! I also like that it's compact and won't take up much space in your luggage when travelling but it's large enough to fit large sippy cups as per my photo! I had to sterilise this quickly as I stuck on the steriliser and no room for this and it was coming up to feeding time and it was all done in half an hour and I liked that it's ready to use immediately when using the cold water method as so often I have burnt my hands taking hot bottles out of the steriliser when in a hurry! I have used the wipes out in a cafe when giving my DD lunch and they are also great to use and compact enough not to take up any room in my nappy bag, I think going forward I will always carry them as so many tables etc when out and about are not clean enough!
I would definitely recommend the product to not only those travelling but any busy mum it's handy to have in case of emergencies and to take to family etc when visiting and not have to pack up the entire kitchen!
