This is the thread for the 300 Mumsnetters who were testing BEAR Paws with their DCs.

Here’s what BEAR say: "Hello we’re BEAR and we make healthy snack for kids, with absolutely no nonsense whatsoever. Our Paws are made from pure fruit that is gently baked and pressed into tasty paw shapes with no added sugar or concentrates and every bag contains 1 of your 5 a day. Grrr. Available in four tasty recipes, they’re great for little and big paws alike, perfect for grumbly tummies when you’re out and about or as a tasty, healthy snack at home. We’d love to know what you and your DCs think of BEAR Paws as a handy, healthy snack."

BEAR would love to know:

  1. How old are the DCs who took part in this test?
  2. Do you find it a challenge to get your DCs to eat fruit and veg/get their five a day?
  3. What did your DCs think of BEAR Paws (taste, packaging, concept)? What did they like or dislike about them?
  4. Do you think this snack was a suitable size for your child/ren? If so why, if not, why not?
  5. Would you buy BEAR Paws again?
  6. Would you recommend BEAR Paws to friends and family?

All testers who post their feedback on this feedback thread will be entered into a prize draw where one lucky Mumsnetter will win a £300 John Lewis voucher.

Thanks and good luck!

  1. How old are the DCs who took part in this test? My daughter is 3.5yrs old
  2. Do you find it a challenge to get your DCs to eat fruit and veg/get their five a day? She loves all fruit, but only a few vegetables.
  3. What did your DCs think of BEAR Paws (taste, packaging, concept)? What did they like or dislike about them? My daughter liked the different shapes paws in each pack, and the different animals on the front. The bright colours are nice and she liked choosing which packet to have. Also, she said they were delicious and her favourite were the apple flavoured ones.
  4. Do you think this snack was a suitable size for your child/ren? If so why, if not, why not? This was a good sized snack for my daughter. I originally thought that the pack was too big but she ate them all and didn't seem too full up for dinner. I like the size of the fruit snacks inside - made her eat them slowly!
  5. Would you buy BEAR Paws again? Yes definitely.
  6. Would you recommend BEAR Paws to friends and family? Yes I would

BEAR would love to know:

  1. How old are the DCs who took part in this test? 8&5&2
  2. Do you find it a challenge to get your DCs to eat fruit and veg/get their five a day? Yes. Absolutely.
  3. What did your DCs think of BEAR Paws (taste, packaging, concept)? What did they like or dislike about them? Liked the colourful packaging and theme. Sticker chart was a great idea...never eaten so much fruit and veg! Taste of all flavours. Being 'allowed' to eat what they think are healthy sweets. Struggled to open packets.
  4. Do you think this snack was a suitable size for your child/ren? If so why, if not, why not? Yes. Great snack / handbag / treat size.
  5. Would you buy BEAR Paws again? Yes definitely. Great for handbag / emergency school fruit snack.
  6. Would you recommend BEAR Paws to friends and family? Definitely. Thank you.

  1. How old are the DCs who took part in this test?
    They were 4 and 6

  2. Do you find it a challenge to get your DCs to eat fruit and veg/get their five a day?

They love fruit but will only eat limited vegetabkes.

  1. What did your DCs think of BEAR Paws (taste, packaging, concept)? What did they like or dislike about them?

They were really excited to see the packaging and loved the bright colours. They liked the sticker charts too. They knew they were snacks straight away too.

  1. Do you think this snack was a suitable size for your child/ren? If so why, if not, why not?

Yes they were a good size maybe s bit too generous portion.

  1. Would you buy BEAR Paws again?

No I wouldn't as they weren't overly keen on the flavour and choose real fruit over these when offered.

  1. Would you recommend BEAR Paws to friends and family? I would if they specifically were asking for this type of product, otherwise I wouldn't mention this product in conversation.
StillNoFuckingEyeDeer · 04/08/2015 10:21

BEAR would love to know:

  1. How old are the DCs who took part in this test? DD1 is 4 1/2, DD2 is 2.
  2. Do you find it a challenge to get your DCs to eat fruit and veg/get their five a day? They're both pretty good at eating fruit, but vegetables are a real struggle.
  3. What did your DCs think of BEAR Paws (taste, packaging, concept)? What did they like or dislike about them? They weren't that interested in the fact that they were paw prints, but they enjoyed that there were 2 separate colours/flavours per pack. They both loved the taste. DD1 tried fruit flavours that she won't generally eat at home (orange) and discovered she enjoyed it. They liked that there were lots of little sweets in the packet to enjoy.
  4. Do you think this snack was a suitable size for your child/ren? If so why, if not, why not? Yes. There was enough in the pack for the two of them to share a pack and both feel they'd had a good number of sweets, but it would be completely manageable for one child to eat by themselves. It's nice that it's an easy snack to share.
  5. Would you buy BEAR Paws again? Yes. I already have.
  6. Would you recommend BEAR Paws to friends and family? Yes.
WendyRB · 04/08/2015 10:21

Not sure if it's just me, but I still don't have mine (I have emailed to alert MNHQ to this).
My DDs are a bit annoyed: in my excitement at the original email informing me (I haven't been chosen before...) I told them that not only would they get to taste different BEAR Paw flavours, but that they were also a really important part of market research. Can we still take part? Please.

Elvish · 04/08/2015 11:03

I've not had mine either Wendy and I came on to ask if anyone else was still waiting... Sad

skyeskyeskye · 04/08/2015 11:15

Mine have now arrived, will leave review later.

  1. How old are the DCs who took part in this test?
  • 5 and 2
2) Do you find it a challenge to get your DCs to eat fruit and veg/get their five a day?
  • No problem eating fruit, getting them to eat vegetables can be trickier. They always get vegetables with their main meal but easier if the veg is 'hidden' in a sauce or similar.
3) What did your DCs think of BEAR Paws (taste, packaging, concept)? What did they like or dislike about them?
  • Both enjoyed the packs, the 5 year old said they were yummy and the 2 year old thought they were sweets. The eldest could open the pack himself. They didn't mention the packaging or the shape or colour of the bear paws.
4) Do you think this snack was a suitable size for your child/ren? If so why, if not, why not?
  • yes, I thought it was a suitable size
5) Would you buy BEAR Paws again?
  • I would for a long car/plane journey. Much healthier than sweets and crisps. Wouldn't buy them regularly as have no problems with them eating fruit. If some types of vegetables could be incorporated then I might think about buying them more often.
6) Would you recommend BEAR Paws to friends and family?
  • I wouldn't actively recommend them but if someone asked my opinion on them I would say both my DC's enjoyed them.
Shiraznowplease · 04/08/2015 16:27

1). My three year old dd, my 6 year old ds and his friend who was five
2) I have real issues getting them to eat fruit and veg and spend far far too much time hiding them in smoothies, cakes, pasta sauces and stews. I try cutting them into weird and wonderful shapes to make them fun, mainly for them to go into the bin untouched
3)they absolutely loved the packaging and the concept of animal footprints. The dinosaur ones went down very well with the two boys and my dd loved the jungle one. I don't allow them to eat sweets like haribo so they all thought they were being allowed a 'naughty' treat.
4) think they are a great size for a 5 and 6yo as they would be perfect for lunchboxs or after school snacks on the way to an activity or a reward after swimmimg lessons. For my 3 year old there was too many but we put them into a snack pot and she picked when she wanted some.
5) they were a definite winner in our house, the first day my little boy took them to holiday club and they all loved them so much so that we had to take an extra pack for his friend the next day
6) I would heartily recommend them, they are fun, the children love them and it is an easy way to get fruit into children. They would be great for school and would pass the healthy snack criteria. So win win win :)

axlbaby · 04/08/2015 16:30
  1. 3.5 and 5
  2. yes in Different ways. 3.5 year old I struggle to get veg in, 5 year old fruit! Both a struggle to get 5 a day
  3. they really liked the paws though were disappointed that there were no collector cards like in the yoyos ! My older daughter didn't like the blue packet and refused to try them as they looked "yucky". Other than that they both loved the taste though they did say they would like packs that has just one flavour in sometimes as they had a definite preference of the 2 each time.
  4. Was a good size. Got a decent amount to eat without filling them up too much.
  5. Would buy them again definitely and are on my next shopping list.
  6. Would recommend

Thanks!

  1. DC's aged 5 and 2
  1. Eldest will happily eat vegetables but not fruit, youngest will eat fruit all day but will not touch a single vegetable!
  1. Both loved the packaging and wanted to try the BEAR Paws as soon as they saw them. They picked the one they wanted to try first by the animal characters on the packaging rather than the flavours. Eldest also loved the sticker chart idea that came with them and even asked for fruit after dinner so she could then add another paw sticker to the chart. My youngest loved all the flavours, my eldest wasn't keen on the apple flavour paws.
  1. The packs were a great snack size, perfect for throwing in my bag to eat as a snack when we are out and about.
  1. I would consider buying these again, I wouldn't use them as a replacement for fruit or vegetables but they are great for on the go, travelling etc.
  1. I would recommend these to a friend.
WhatTheHellaballoo · 04/08/2015 19:21
  1. How old are the DCs who took part in this test?
they are 4 and 3 years old.

  2. Do you find it a challenge to get your DCs to eat fruit and veg/get their five a day?
My son eats most fruit quite happily but I really struggle with veg. My other son quite happily eats a range of veg but isn't really into fruit! so yes! getting our 5 a day in our house is bit of a struggle. i probably get 2 to 3 portions a day for each of them.

  3. What did your DCs think of BEAR Paws (taste, packaging, concept)? What did they like or dislike about them?
they loved the colourful packaging. as soon as I showed them they were very excited! They loved all the flavours but their favourite was the apple and strawberry. They really enjoyed matching the paw shapes to the pictures at the back. they would ask each day what animal paws they would be eating. I think that aspect of the snacks was very appealing to them. It was well thought out with jungle, polar themed etc.
I must admit when they first saw the snacks they were a little put off by the look of it and texture but once I told them that it was nice and tasty they were happy to try and loved them.

  4. Do you think this snack was a suitable size for your child/ren? If so why, if not, why not? i think it was a suitable size, however, i personally wouldn't give a whole packet to my kids at this age hence they shared each packet. i felt it was a bit too much.

  5. Would you buy BEAR Paws again?
yes. i have tried some bar type things from the same company when my children were younger and they didn't take to it very well so I never bought bear paw products again. i was quite sceptical before trying these as I thought it would be similar and my kids wouldn't like them but they really liked them and i was happy too!

  6. Would you recommend BEAR Paws to friends and family?
yes i would. I think its great that they are a natural product and a better alternative to chewy sweets. well done bear paws!

LowCarbHeaven · 04/08/2015 19:53
  1. How old are the DCs who took part in this test?

He is three and a half years old.

  1. Do you find it a challenge to get your DCs to eat fruit and veg/get their five a day?

My son is pretty good at eating fruit and vegetables. Sometimes he needs a lot of encouragement for his vegetables though.

  1. What did your DCs think of BEAR Paws (taste, packaging, concept)? What did they like or dislike about them?

My son really liked the snacks, they are easy to open, bright colours and he liked the different animals on the front. He really liked all the flavours. I personally have not seen many fruit snacks with those flavour combinations which is good. I have tried other bear snacks but this is my new favourite for him.

  1. Do you think this snack was a suitable size for your child/ren? If so why, if not, why not?

I think they are a good size for toddlers.

  1. Would you buy BEAR Paws again?

Yes definitely.

  1. Would you recommend BEAR Paws to friends and family?

Yes I would.

HarlettOScara · 04/08/2015 20:04
  1. How old are the DCs who took part in this test? 3yrs old

  2. Do you find it a challenge to get your DCs to eat fruit and veg/get their five a day?
Yes! DD will eat some fruit but practically no vegetables at home. She's better at nursery but getting her to eat a variety of fruit and veg is a constant struggle.

  3. What did your DCs think of BEAR Paws (taste, packaging, concept)? What did they like or dislike about them?
DD was immediately interested in the packaging and loved the little packets. She seems to like the colours and points out the Bears on the packs. She liked the reward chart and stickers too.

  4. Do you think this snack was a suitable size for your child/ren? If so why, if not, why not?
I actually give DD them half a pack at a time because I think, if anything, there are too many in the pack for a 3 year old. If they were also available in smaller 'fun size' packs, I would be more likely to buy those.

  5. Would you buy BEAR Paws again?
    Yes.

  6. Would you recommend BEAR Paws to friends and family? Yes, i would recommend them.

glasgowlass · 04/08/2015 22:20

1) How old are the DCs who took part in this test?

DS1 is 6 and DS2 is 2

2) Do you find it a challenge to get your DCs to eat fruit and veg/get their five a day?

It can sometimes be challenging to get them to eat enough fruit and veg, they tend to go through cycles of eating it all the time or none at all. I'm always looking for ways to make healthier snacks more fun and easy to take on the move.

3) What did your DCs think of BEAR Paws (taste, packaging, concept)? What did they like or dislike about them?

They both loved the eye catching packets and the cartoon animals. They both really liked that they could easily open the packets themselves and enjoyed looking at the pawprint and matching it to the animals listed. Both seemed to enjoy all the flavours and DS1 has asked me to buy some for snacks for school when he goes back!

4) Do you think this snack was a suitable size for your child/ren? If so why, if not, why not?

In my opinion this was a perfect snack size as it was just the right quantity to tide them over until the nest mealtime.

5) Would you buy BEAR Paws again?

I plan to buy some in the very near future!

6) Would you recommend BEAR Paws to friends and family?

Already have done so.

Thank you so much for choosing my family to be testers. The products were a big hit with us all!

HighOverTheFenceLeapsSunnyJim · 05/08/2015 09:13
  1. DC are 6 and 3.
  1. I wouldn't say it's a challenge, they are happy to eat fruit & will devour certain vegetables with gusto, but it's definitely something I am aware of in thinking about their diets.
  1. The kids both liked the taste of the paws. There were excited to see the packets & liked the animals on them. They are using the sticker chart!

  2. size was just right IMO.

  3. I would buy them occasionally eg for journeys/days out but think they are quite expensive. However kids will consider them a 'treat' so will get them sometimes.

  4. yes

Wenglish · 05/08/2015 09:33

1- 4 and 5
2- the 5 year old yes, I think he gets bored with veg.
3- they both loved the packaging and sticker chart.
4- perfect size, great for school I thought.
5- yes for snack time at school
6- yes I would, fun snack that I know isn't full of junk or chrmicals

Wenglish · 05/08/2015 09:34

Ps I would find it much easier to find them if they were with school snack type foods not in baby aisle

Moodykat · 05/08/2015 10:23

1) How old are the DCs who took part in this test?

DS1 is 6 and DS2 is 4

2) Do you find it a challenge to get your DCs to eat fruit and veg/get their five a day?

Yes! They seem to have an aversion to vegetables apart from carrots and peas. Only fruit they will eat is bananas and apples - you can hardly eat 5 apples a day!

3) What did your DCs think of BEAR Paws (taste, packaging, concept)? What did they like or dislike about them?

They really love them. They like the packaging - I think it is very child-friendly too!

4) Do you think this snack was a suitable size for your child/ren? If so why, if not, why not?

Yep, just the right size.

5) Would you buy BEAR Paws again?

I did buy them before and will definitely be buying them again - I try and find them on the best offer though as they are not the cheapest snack!

6) Would you recommend BEAR Paws to friends and family?

Yes, I definitely would!

Thank you very much for choosing us, the boys were thrilled!

Fillybuster · 05/08/2015 12:13
  1. How old are the DCs who took part in this test?

DD2, who just turned 5, was the official tester (and very proud of her formal position!) but DD1 (7) and DS (10) were keen to add suporting feedback Grin

  1. Do you find it a challenge to get your DCs to eat fruit and veg/get their five a day?

Fortunately, all 3 DCs love eating both fruit and vegetables and it's mostly easy to feed them a very varied diet. All 3 will willingly select fresh fruit or vegetables for a snack although will always trade up for something more sugary if they can get away with it

  1. What did your DCs think of BEAR Paws (taste, packaging, concept)? What did they like or dislike about them?

DD2 was absolutely blown away by the box when it arrived: she loved the stickers, the straw, the poster - everything!! Thank you Grin Most of all, she loved the BEAR-ness of it all: all 3 dcs love the BEAR brand! The dcs still play with their BEAR alphabet magnets (from the cereal test) almost daily, so she straight away ran over and used those to pin her 5-a-day sticker chart to the fridge Grin Grin

DD2 loved the packaging and the colours, and we spent some time discussing what we thought would be in each packet (turns out that the dcs were right: 2 colours of footprints in each - and I was wrong!).

It was great that there were 4 flavours, as the package arrived on a Monday, so DD2 had 4 days of camp packed lunches remaining. Every morning she got to choose which flavour she would try that day, and she loved coming home and giving me a detailed report each afternoon.

DD1 and DS immediately started negotiating some tasting rights - in the end, DD2 agreed to keep back a few of each packet from her packed lunch at day camp for them to try in the afternoons when they all got home.

Overall, she really loved them: the biggest hit was the 'blue' packet, but they were all great. DD2 and DS were also really keen: the biggest complaint was that they didn't get to try enough of them, as DD2 had eaten most of them each day!

  1. Do you think this snack was a suitable size for your child/ren? If so why, if not, why not?

Absolutely perfect size and great packaging: really attractive, colourful, handbag sized and easy to open. Also liked that they weren't too sticky. Best thing about them was that it was quite a small amount of dried fruit overall, but the pieces were small enough to make the snack last quite a long time Grin

  1. Would you buy BEAR Paws again?

Definitely. A mixed-flavour multi-pack would be awesome.

  1. Would you recommend BEAR Paws to friends and family?

Already have :)

Thanks so much for selecting DD2 for this test: she had loads of fun!
