This is the thread for the 300 Mumsnetters who were testing BEAR Paws with their DCs.

Here’s what BEAR say: "Hello we’re BEAR and we make healthy snack for kids, with absolutely no nonsense whatsoever. Our Paws are made from pure fruit that is gently baked and pressed into tasty paw shapes with no added sugar or concentrates and every bag contains 1 of your 5 a day. Grrr. Available in four tasty recipes, they’re great for little and big paws alike, perfect for grumbly tummies when you’re out and about or as a tasty, healthy snack at home. We’d love to know what you and your DCs think of BEAR Paws as a handy, healthy snack."

BEAR would love to know:

  1. How old are the DCs who took part in this test?
  2. Do you find it a challenge to get your DCs to eat fruit and veg/get their five a day?
  3. What did your DCs think of BEAR Paws (taste, packaging, concept)? What did they like or dislike about them?
  4. Do you think this snack was a suitable size for your child/ren? If so why, if not, why not?
  5. Would you buy BEAR Paws again?
  6. Would you recommend BEAR Paws to friends and family?

All testers who post their feedback on this feedback thread will be entered into a prize draw where one lucky Mumsnetter will win a £300 John Lewis voucher.

Thanks and good luck!

1, my daughter who is 5 tested them.
2, she doesn't really like veg but eats a range of fruit.
3, the packaging was attractive to my daughter but she didn't like them very much and said they were a bit sticky on her teeth!
4, I would think if the child liked them they would be a good size for a snack.
5, no I don't think I would buy them again as she really wasn't keen on the texture.
6,'probably wouldn't recommend them as I don't like recommending things that my daughter wouldn't eat.

  1. How old are the DCs who took part in this test?
Four and six years old. I would not give such a sweet snack to my 1 year old cub.

  2. Do you find it a challenge to get your DCs to eat fruit and veg/get their five a day?
No (at the moment. Fingers crossed that this doesn't change).

  3. What did your DCs think of BEAR Paws (taste, packaging, concept)? What did they like or dislike about them?
They LOVE them. My little girls are obsessed with dinosaurs, arctic wildlife and, for one, lions, so the packaging could not be better. As a biologist, I think that it is fantastic to have animal prints and a key on the back to help identify what they are eating. They play lots of games, testing their wildlife knowledge, practising reading and turning into allosaurs or polar bears and eating all the animals. No dislikes (although they would argue that a bottomless packet would be an improvement).

  4. Do you think this snack was a suitable size for your child/ren? If so why, if not, why not?
Yes. I am pretty strict about what my children eat and Bear Paws are a treat for days out, energy boost on a long/wet walk, pick me up for a nasty accident or surprise in their lunch box. Any bigger, and I would probably split the packet between two children which would spoil the whole experience for them. They are also very chewy and so teeth need a good brush in the evening.

  5. Would you buy BEAR Paws again?
    Absolutely.

  6. Would you recommend BEAR Paws to friends and family?
    Yes.

allybird1 · 18/08/2015 21:30
  1. My testers were 3 and 4 years old.
  2. I don't find it difficult to get the kids to eat fruit, but I do find it hard to find good snack alternatives -especially easy to transport for days out.
  3. They enjoyed the new range. It was ideally suited to the age bracket with the fun colourful packaging. The packets were easy to open but well sealed as the wax packaging was a very good idea for lunch boxes in case they get wet. We took the safari packet to the zoo. They loved the stickers and the hi fiveing was a clever bit of marketing as we have to hi 5 all the time, lol.
  4. Yes the size was good, maybe slightly bigger, but no smaller I don't think.
  5. Yes I would buy them again. My lo tried fruit winder things from other companies but did not enjoy them, so glad healthy options zre on market.
  6. Yes I would recommend them to others.
thanks for picking me to test the product 4.

  1. How old are the DCs who took part in this test?
    5 and almost 2.

  2. Do you find it a challenge to get your DCs to eat fruit and veg/get their five a day?

I find it a challenge to give a variety to my youngest, he doesn't like wet cold foods!

  1. What did your DCs think of BEAR Paws (taste, packaging, concept)? What did they like or dislike about them?

Both liked them, my eldest loved them and she has gone off the usual fruit bars so this is good news.

  1. Do you think this snack was a suitable size for your child/ren? If so why, if not, why not?

Perfect size for them and great for travelling!

  1. Would you buy BEAR Paws again?

Already have!

  1. Would you recommend BEAR Paws to friends and family?

Definitely. Both mine liked them and eldest loved them, why wouldn't I recommend?!

  1. My D.C. is 3.5
  2. D.C. will eat fruit but veg, especially raw, is more difficult to get into him!
  3. My D.C absolutely loved the snack. We had one pack a day and they were considered a real treat. He ate them very quickly and thought they were sweets. A real winner. He loved the bear theme too.
  4. The packs were perfect size.
  5. Yes.
  6. Yes

  1. How old are the DCs who took part in this test?

4 and 3 years

  1. Do you find it a challenge to get your DCs to eat fruit and veg/get their five a day?

They love fruit - can't get enough! Vegetables less so but not really a problem. We're vegetarian so it's just as well! The only obstacle to 5 a day is convenience if we're out and about sometimes.

  1. What did your DCs think of BEAR Paws (taste, packaging, concept)? What did they like or dislike about them?

The girls were both very keen on the concept of "fruit sweets". They love dried fruit snacks and consider anything in a packet like that to be sweets and therefore a treat. They loved every flavour, shape and size, they were gone very quickly. They said they liked the packaging but the oldest one of course loved the pinker colours more! I liked the paper packet, it was easy for them to open which would be helpful at nursery in a packed lunch.

Daddy suggested he'd prefer the stuff in a chew bar shape as it might last longer and be less messy if they dropped them but I liked the smaller pieces as I could give them out bit by bit if needed to keep them quiet in appointments (like the GPS etc)! The girls said they'd prefer a chew bar too. The pieces didn't last long enough for the print patterns to be noticed. When I pointed them out while they munched the last packet they couldn't read the animal names to match up with the prints on the pieces so they weren't really interested. Maybe pictures would help more.

  1. Do you think this snack was a suitable size for your child/ren? If so why, if not, why not?

The packets were a little small for my girls who have big appetites! They were gone a bit too quickly.

Ps sorry this review is late. There was a delay in receiving my products. Thanks for including us.

  1. Would you buy BEAR Paws again?

Depending on the price, definitely yes. They would be great as a healthy treat on a day out or in a lunch box.

  1. Would you recommend BEAR Paws to friends and family?

Dependent on price, definitely.

1) How old are the DCs who took part in this test?

3 and 5

2) Do you find it a challenge to get your DCs to eat fruit and veg/get their five a day?

Both eat a lot of veg and demolish the fruit bowl as fast as I can replenish it.

3) What did your DCs think of BEAR Paws (taste, packaging, concept)? What did they like or dislike about them?
They liked the range of flavours - although they preferred the citrusy ones. They also liked being able to have a packet each which they could trade. I liked the fact that they struggled to open the packets themselves which means they can't help them selves out of the cupboard. They thought they were a bit like sweets - but sweets they were actually allowed rather than having them rationned!

4) Do you think this snack was a suitable size for your child/ren? If so why, if not, why not?
It's a good size for lunch boxes and snacks and nice to share with others because there are plenty in a packet.

5) Would you buy BEAR Paws again?

Depending on price but probably yes.

6) Would you recommend BEAR Paws to friends and family?

Yes.

mm1975 · 21/08/2015 06:27

1, The children that tried them were 12,10,9,7,4 & 2

2, All my children eat a variety of fruit and vegetables, some more fussy than others.

3, The children loved the bright packaging and fun animal designs, they liked all the flavours.

4, Perfect size for a snack or in their lunchbox.

5, I would buy them again for taking to school in their lunchbox.

6, I would recommend them as they are a great fun, but healthy snack which all ages enjoy.

nerysw · 21/08/2015 07:17
  1. How old are the DCs who took part in this test? My daughter is 6 and my son is 4.
  2. Do you find it a challenge to get your DCs to eat fruit and veg/get their five a day? Not really, they both like fruit and veg and think that strawberries and blueberries are treats. I'm more concerned about giving them 'treats' which aren't sweets and are a bit healthier.
  3. What did your DCs think of BEAR Paws (taste, packaging, concept)? What did they like or dislike about them? My daughter has been nagging me to buy BEAR products as some of her friends at school have them in their lunchbox and she thinks they're very cool. She was really excited to try them. They both really liked the packs and the pictures of animals on them. It went downhill a bit when we opened them though and neither child were particularly impressed. Although they liked the paw shapes they didn't really like the products which surprised me after how excited they'd been to try them. My son tried one from each pack and refused to eat any more and my daughter ate some then asked for a banana instead. We tried different packets but to my surprise they weren't the hit I'd expected them to be.The Orange and Strawberry were least popular and the Blueberry and Raspberry were the most popular with my daughter but they're not something she's choose again.
  4. Do you think this snack was a suitable size for your child/ren? If so why, if not, why not? I think there are loads in a packet so maybe a bit large as a child portion.
  5. Would you buy BEAR Paws again? Not for my children but I might buy them for myself as a healthy snack to keep in my desk at work. I'll stick to buying raisins for the children as an out and about healthy snack.
  6. Would you recommend BEAR Paws to friends and family? Possibly, if they have children who don't eat much fruit and veg.
LakeFlyPie · 21/08/2015 09:43
  1. How old are the DCs who took part in this test?
    7 + 4

  2. Do you find it a challenge to get your DCs to eat fruit and veg/get their five a day?
    Not at all

  3. What did your DCs think of BEAR Paws (taste, packaging, concept)? What did they like or dislike about them?
Loved them especially as DS1 shared his name with one of the characters!

  4. Do you think this snack was a suitable size for your child/ren? If so why, if not, why not?
They shared a packet and had a few paws at a time.
I wouldn't be keen for them to scoff the whole pack in one go as am aware the stickier dried fruit type snacks aren't very good for their teeth.

  5. Would you buy BEAR Paws again?
    Possibly depending on price

  6. Would you recommend BEAR Paws to friends and family?
    If they asked specifically

kaymondo · 23/08/2015 19:59
  1. DC are 2 and 4
  2. They both like fruit but veg can be a bit more of a challenge.
  3. They were both excited by the packaging, def more interested in choosing which animal they wanted rather than which flavour!
  4. Just the right size for a snack for my 2
  5. We already have! Once the samples were gone the DC kept asking for them!
  6. Yes definitely Smile
LemonBreeland · 27/08/2015 13:07
  1. How old are the DCs who took part in this test?
This was for my 4 year old, however my 7 and 11yo tried them too.

  2. Do you find it a challenge to get your DCs to eat fruit and veg/get their five a day?
I do with my 4 year old, she is not keen on fruit or veg.

  3. What did your DCs think of BEAR Paws (taste, packaging, concept)? What did they like or dislike about them?
4yo DD like the look of the packaging, it made her interested to try them.
She only liked the taste of the strwaberry ones, she did not like any other falvour. My 11 year old loved them, but they are not aimed at him adn he eats plenty of fresh fruit anyway.

  4. Do you think this snack was a suitable size for your child/ren? If so why, if not, why not?
It was a good size pack for children, although each littel 'sweet' took a lot of eating, so an even smaller pack would be fine.

  5. Would you buy BEAR Paws again?
Probably not as my DD didn't really enjoy them.

  6. Would you recommend BEAR Paws to friends and family?
I would be acuse althoughmy DD didn't enjoy them I think that other children would.

  1. How old are the DCs who took part in this test?

10 months old

  1. Do you find it a challenge to get your DCs to eat fruit and veg/get their five a day?

To be fair, all 3 of my children have been great at eating fruit and veg. Sometimes too much!

  1. What did your DCs think of BEAR Paws (taste, packaging, concept)? What did they like or dislike about them?

Her eyes lit up when she saw the packaging, very bright and attractive. She picked the paws up and had a look, took a lick, then smiled. Next thing i now they were being piled in and chewed. And then calling for more! Even her 4 and 8 year old siblings tried them and thought they were great. They both eat Bear Yoyos so it was a similar taste for them.

  1. Do you think this snack was a suitable size for your child/ren? If so why, if not, why not?

Perfect for my 10 month old.

  1. Would you buy BEAR Paws again?

Yes, already on my shopping list. Now when the older 2 have a yoyo, she can have some paws.

  1. Would you recommend BEAR Paws to friends and family?

Yes, I'm going to get some for her party.

5madthings · 29/08/2015 00:27

Finally found thread and sorted out log in issues etc, place marking to come back and fill in the feedback.

AGnu · 31/08/2015 19:46

Can I just add to my response... I've discovered that it is actually possible to cut my DCs' hair. Every snip they sit still for earns them another Bear Paw in their reward jar - they both have much neater hair now! Grin They make much better rewards than the smarties I'd been trying to bribe them with & I'm much happier to give them something more natural. I think we're going to have to keep a stock of them in the house from now on!

bbrisotto · 02/09/2015 08:15
  1. How old are the DCs who took part in this test? 3 nearly 4
  2. Do you find it a challenge to get your DCs to eat fruit and veg/get their five a day? She loves fruit and veg but since having a relatively new baby it's a struggle to prepare healthy meals all the time.
  3. What did your DCs think of BEAR Paws (taste, packaging, concept)? What did they like or dislike about them? She could open the packet herself which is a plus to her. She liked the taste and the fact they were paws. At first try she got fed up before the end of the packet.
  4. Do you think this snack was a suitable size for your child/ren? If so why, if not, why not? Maybe quite a lot for a young toddler.
  5. Would you buy BEAR Paws again? Yes and we have done too.
  6. Would you recommend BEAR Paws to friends and family? Yes, i feel confident that they are a healthy snack.

Thanks to everyone who took part in this product test and left their feedback. This thread has now closed. Congratulations to minesapintofwine who has won the prize draw for a £300 John Lewis voucher! We'll be in touch soon.

minesapintofwine · 02/09/2015 12:29

Thank you so much! have spent it all in my head Smile

5madthings · 02/09/2015 12:53

I was just coming to add my feedback. Don't care that I missed out the draw so will leave feedback anyway, hope it can still be passed on.

Kids who ate the snacks were

4, 5, 7, 8,9 and 10 and 12.

They all liked the snacks though my boys wrre disappointed they didn't have the cards in like with the yo yo!

I don't have any issues getting my kids to eat fruit or veg, very lucky in that all the madthings are good eaters.

They all loved the taste and the packaging, easy for them to open. They loved the shapes of the 'sweets' all in they were a big hit.

I think size wise it was fine, my kids shared them with friends and there was plenty to go round. They would make a good after school snack or lunchbox treat.

As to buying them again, yes I will as we buy yo yo occasionally as a treat. But I do find them expensive so I tend to buy them when they are on offer.

Would I recommend? Yes I guess so if someone asked about them. Though most peoole we know buy them already, they are a very popular after school snack at my kids primary. Also good for party bags treats etc. And if you have a child who doesn't like fruit or veg then Def a good way of getting in one a day.

5madthings · 02/09/2015 12:55

Btw mnet, I tried to email back in reply to an email sent to me re this but it said email addy no longer existed? This was after all the hacking stuff so maybe that's why? I had a nightmare getting on until the last few days when finally managed to sort password etc. Hence late reply.
