This is the thread for the 300 Mumsnetters who were testing BEAR Paws with their DCs.

Here’s what BEAR say: "Hello we’re BEAR and we make healthy snack for kids, with absolutely no nonsense whatsoever. Our Paws are made from pure fruit that is gently baked and pressed into tasty paw shapes with no added sugar or concentrates and every bag contains 1 of your 5 a day. Grrr. Available in four tasty recipes, they’re great for little and big paws alike, perfect for grumbly tummies when you’re out and about or as a tasty, healthy snack at home. We’d love to know what you and your DCs think of BEAR Paws as a handy, healthy snack."

BEAR would love to know:

  1. How old are the DCs who took part in this test?
  2. Do you find it a challenge to get your DCs to eat fruit and veg/get their five a day?
  3. What did your DCs think of BEAR Paws (taste, packaging, concept)? What did they like or dislike about them?
  4. Do you think this snack was a suitable size for your child/ren? If so why, if not, why not?
  5. Would you buy BEAR Paws again?
  6. Would you recommend BEAR Paws to friends and family?

All testers who post their feedback on this feedback thread will be entered into a prize draw where one lucky Mumsnetter will win a £300 John Lewis voucher.

Thanks and good luck!

  1. How old are the DCs who took part in this test? 4 and nearly 2 (22 months)
  2. Do you find it a challenge to get your DCs to eat fruit and veg/get their five a day? No they eat both really well and fruit is a preferred snack.
  3. What did your DCs think of BEAR Paws (taste, packaging, concept)? What did they like or dislike about them? Eldest said delicious and perfect! She picked up on the animal designs on the front straight away and liked selecting which animal flavour to try. Was more concerned with colour of packet than flavour.
  4. Do you think this snack was a suitable size for your child/ren? If so why, if not, why not? I thought they were a bit small inside the packet.
  5. Would you buy BEAR Paws again? Yes for long car journeys etc but not sure they are more convenient than just giving a piece of fruit.
  6. Would you recommend BEAR Paws to friends and family? Yes as the girls both enjoyed them.

  1. How old are the DCs who took part in this test?
    Age 3

  2. Do you find it a challenge to get your DCs to eat fruit and veg/get their five a day?
It can be, DD prefers carbs such as potatoes and bread

  3. What did your DCs think of BEAR Paws (taste, packaging, concept)? What did they like or dislike about them?

  4. Do you think this snack was a suitable size for your child/ren? If so why, if not, why not?
    Yes

  5. Would you buy BEAR Paws again?
    Yes

  6. Would you recommend BEAR Paws to friends and family?
Yes - a great healthy snack to keep in your bag

  1. How old are the DCs who took part in this test?
DS2, 2y3m. His older siblings (5 & 8) are going to be around for the next couple of packs, so they'll get a taste too.

  2. Do you find it a challenge to get your DCs to eat fruit and veg/get their five a day?
Isn't it 7 a day now?! Generally they all eat at least some fruit and veg fairly readily. But it's often the expensive soft fruits - fine in summer when it's in season, but £££ over the winter. They don't always get 7 a day either, so I'm all for things that make it easier.

  3. What did your DCs think of BEAR Paws (taste, packaging, concept)? What did they like or dislike about them?
DS2 really enjoyed them - he scoffed his way through 2 packs in short order, at any rate. And said yum yum and signed that they were tasty, too.
He also liked the packets, as they were papery enough that he could open them himself (hence the 2 packs...) Hmm which will teach me for not putting them away properly.

  4. Do you think this snack was a suitable size for your child/ren? If so why, if not, why not?
Yes, it seemed like about the right amount.

  5. Would you buy BEAR Paws again?
Yes, assuming the cost was comparable to the fruit snacks I already buy.

  6. Would you recommend BEAR Paws to friends and family?
Definitely - I tasted them and I really liked them too, so I'd have no hesitation in recommending them.

  1. How old are the DCs who took part in this test? My DD is 3. I also gave some to my nephews aged 4 and 18 months.
  2. Do you find it a challenge to get your DCs to eat fruit and veg/get their five a day? DD loves most fruit and veg, but five a day can be tricky on busier days.
  3. What did your DCs think of BEAR Paws (taste, packaging, concept)? What did they like or dislike about them? They loved the colours and the different animals on the packaging. They also loved that there were 2 different colours in each pack. All 3 children liked the snack and my DD and older nephew have requested that I buy some more.
  4. Do you think this snack was a suitable size for your child/ren? If so why, if not, why not? It was a perfect size and as they come in little packets, they were convinced it was a pack of sweets.
  5. Would you buy BEAR Paws again? Absolutely!
  6. Would you recommend BEAR Paws to friends and family? Yes.

1) How old are the DCs who took part in this test?
Aged 3 & 9 years

2) Do you find it a challenge to get your DCs to eat fruit and veg/get their five a day?

I struggle with variety - both are very good with fruit (not so good with veg) but both will quite happily eat their 5 a day - if I can squeeze it in

3) What did your DCs think of BEAR Paws (taste, packaging, concept)? What did they like or dislike about them?

Both were excited when our box arrived - loved the packaging - bright colours and really easy to open - even for my 3 year old. Loved all the flavours, couldn't decide who was going to have which flavours - 3 year managed to get the strawberry & apple and said they were his best!

4) Do you think this snack was a suitable size for your child/ren? If so why, if not, why not?

Easy and quick way of getting an extra 5 a day into a lunch box - easy to open and eat at school

5) Would you buy BEAR Paws again?

I would buy bear paws but I do have a little hesitation over if there are bad for their teeth.

6) Would you recommend BEAR Paws to friends and family?

Yes - already have

  1. How old are the DCs who took part in this test? 2 & 5yrs
  2. Do you find it a challenge to get your DCs to eat fruit and veg/get their five a day? Sometimes, some days they'll happily eat everything I put in front of them but others they'll pick the smallest pieces of veg out of their dinner.
  3. What did your DCs think of BEAR Paws (taste, packaging, concept)? What did they like or dislike about them? My dc really liked the fun shapes and fruit tastes. Apparently they are yummy. The footprints are a fun idea. My ds (5) usually struggles to open packaging on his own but the Bear packaging is papery so he opened it easily.
  4. Do you think this snack was a suitable size for your child/ren? If so why, if not, why not? Yes. The packet was a decent size with plenty of fruit pieces in it.
  5. Would you buy BEAR Paws again? Yes definitely. My son has already spotted them while we were shopping.
  6. Would you recommend BEAR Paws to friends and family? Yew.
MimsyBorogroves · 31/07/2015 18:28
  1. How old are the DCs who took part in this test?
    DS1 is 7, DS2 is 3.

  2. Do you find it a challenge to get your DCs to eat fruit and veg/get their five a day?
DS1 will eat most fruit and veg. DS2 is very, very challenging. He has issues with tastes and texture and will really only eat bananas and occasionally apple, plus hidden veg in spag bol and pizza sauce.

  3. What did your DCs think of BEAR Paws (taste, packaging, concept)? What did they like or dislike about them?
Both boys loved the packaging. DS2 was THRILLED by the fact they had dinosaur footprints and dinosaur facts and and and DINOSAURS. He didn't like the taste or texture unfortunately - damn. DS1 thought they were delicious and thoroughly enjoyed his packet, plus DS2's, and has already asked when he can have the others...

  4. Do you think this snack was a suitable size for your child/ren? If so why, if not, why not?
Definitely. Great size for small hands and perfect either as a snack for in the car/between meals or as an addition to the lunch box in school or for picnics.

  5. Would you buy BEAR Paws again?
Possibly, for DS1 as he liked them so much. He will be going back to packed lunch for school dinners so they would be a nice occasional treat, but I don't like dried fruit etc as a regular item because of the links with tooth decay, and these definitely stuck to the teeth.

  6. Would you recommend BEAR Paws to friends and family?
    Yes, as a tasty snack.

AWhistlingWoman · 31/07/2015 19:11
  1. How old are the DCs who took part in this test?
    DD2 (6), DS1 (4) and DD3 (1) all tried them

  2. Do you find it a challenge to get your DCs to eat fruit and veg/get their five a day?
Both DD2 and DD3 eat quite a variety of fruit but very few vegetables sadly. DS1 is far better with vegetables but only eats bananas when it comes to fruit. He does, however, eat BEAR Yoyos.

  3. What did your DCs think of BEAR Paws (taste, packaging, concept)? What did they like or dislike about them?
They were all extremely interested in the packets from the outset and all wanted to try them. The dinosaur packet in particular was remarked upon and immediately baggsied by DS1. They didn't seem to link the product with fruit at all, I think that they viewed them more as sweets and this didn't change once they had tried them.
DD2 tried the polar bear snacks which I think were raspberry and blueberry and she immediately said that she didn't like them. Strange as she is very fond of fresh raspberries. However they were all snaffled in short order by DD3 so they didn't go to waste.
Both DS1 and DD3 ate all of their own packets (DS1 had dinosaurs and DD3 the safari paws) with relish. DD3 then ate all of DD1's left overs and they have just this evening fought with passion over which one will eat the Jungle Paws. Not pleased at being made to share. So I can safely that these were a big hit with 2/3 of the kids.

  4. Do you think this snack was a suitable size for your child/ren? If so why, if not, why not?
I think that these packets are quite a good size for a 'larger' snack. Certainly the children that liked them ate the whole pack without much hesitation. Don't think I would want a larger bag as they would probably snaffle even more (as DD3 managed to as she ate her sister's bag too!)

  5. Would you buy BEAR Paws again?
Yes I definitely would. The kids really liked them, they are healthier than some of the alternatives that they like to snack on (DS1 is very, very keen on crisps sadly) They are a handy size to pop in your hand bag and have a long shelf life. They are also quite 'fiddly' to eat being so small and thin. This is good for moments when you need a distraction! I find the same with the little boxes of raisins, that they have to focus quite hard on extracting the raisins which can buy you a few moments if things are getting fraught.

  6. Would you recommend BEAR Paws to friends and family?
Yes I definitely would. DS1 is proof that even fruit haters might eat these!

  1. How old are the DCs who took part in this test? nearly 6 and nearly 4

  2. Do you find it a challenge to get your DCs to eat fruit and veg/get their five a day?

fruit is quite easy but veg can be a bit of a battle!

  1. What did your DCs think of BEAR Paws (taste, packaging, concept)? What did they like or dislike about them?

Really excited about the packets and the different designs, great not to have gendered packaging and the different paw prints are a nice touch!

  1. Do you think this snack was a suitable size for your child/ren? If so why, if not, why not?

yes a good packet size, good for packed lunches or handbag snacks

  1. Would you buy BEAR Paws again?

yes definitely"

  1. Would you recommend BEAR Paws to friends and family

Yes - they are a great product

HaveTeaWillSurvive · 31/07/2015 19:36

1) How old are the DCs who took part in this test?
DS is about to turn 3, and his helpers were just turned 3.

2) Do you find it a challenge to get your DCs to eat fruit and veg/get their five a day?
Not generally, although it's more of a challenge to get the veg in there.

3) What did your DCs think of BEAR Paws (taste, packaging, concept)? What did they like or dislike about them?
He loved them, especially the characters on the front, dinosaur feet were a big success. In fact the problem was trying to stop him eating the whole box in one day. I'm afraid to say the stickers just got used in one sitting but it did buy me an hour of peace so was a winner from my point of view!

4) Do you think this snack was a suitable size for your child/ren? If so why, if not, why not?
Yes, took him a little while to eat but not too much for a wee one if it's been a 'light treat' day. A couple of times I halfed the pack and he didn't seem to notice. Would be good to have the option to buy a larger re sealable packet if you just want to hand out a little treat.

5) Would you buy BEAR Paws again?
Definitely, they were a big hit. DS has already asked for some.

6) Would you recommend BEAR Paws to friends and family?
Yes, we shared some with a couple of friends on a play date and they all loved them too.

lucyxloves · 31/07/2015 20:18
  1. How old are the DCs who took part in this test? 5 years.
  2. Do you find it a challenge to get your DCs to eat fruit and veg/get their five a day? Yes! My son told the school dinner ladies he was allergic to vegetables and needed to wear a sticker to tell everyone to keep them FAR away from him! It is a constant struggle to come up with ways to encourage him to eat them.
  3. What did your DCs think of BEAR Paws (taste, packaging, concept)? What did they like or dislike about them? He loved all the different animal packaging & the poster is a huge hit, up already & helping in the fight for five a day! I was amazed that he loved bear paws. We've tried other brands of fruit shapes and his response has always been "yucky!" He ate the raspberry & blueberry Arctic Paws first & now has tried them all. He said the best thing was the taste "They all taste YUMMY!" His favorite were the Dino Paws!
  4. Do you think this snack was a suitable size for your child/ren? If so why, if not, why not? Yes, it was the perfect size for a snack & took him longer to eat than his normal snack because "the paws are quite, quite, very chewy & small".
  5. Would you buy BEAR Paws again? Yes, I love the fact that they're pure fruit, my son loves everything about them and thinks he is eating sweets!
  6. Would you recommend BEAR Paws to friends and family? Yes, I already have!
asuwere · 31/07/2015 20:26

1) How old are the DCs who took part in this test?
2, 5, 7, 9 and almost 1 year old

2) Do you find it a challenge to get your DCs to eat fruit and veg/get their five a day?
They are happy to eat fruit and I struggle to keep the fruit bowl filled. Veg not so great but they each like different things so I just need to work with what they will have.

3) What did your DCs think of BEAR Paws (taste, packaging, concept)? What did they like or dislike about them?
They all liked them, they were very excited by the packaging and all loved the taste. They enjoyed that there were different shapes in each bag so not all the same.

4) Do you think this snack was a suitable size for your child/ren? If so why, if not, why not?
It is quite a lot for the younger ones to have at one time - they would probably eat it but it is quite sugary so I wouldn't really want them to. It is a good size bag to share though as treats. Would be a good size for eldest for in lunchbox.

5) Would you buy BEAR Paws again?
I might as a treat as the DC did enjoy them. I personally find an apple a better snack though.

6) Would you recommend BEAR Paws to friends and family?
Yes, as a treat, I probably would.

Thanks for picking us, the DC loved the post that day :)

  1. How old are the DCs who took part in this test?
    Five and three years old

  2. Do you find it a challenge to get your DCs to eat fruit and veg/get their five a day?
Fruit is easy, but a variety of vegetables can be difficult; depends on their whims!

  3. What did your DCs think of BEAR Paws (taste, packaging, concept)? What did they like or dislike about them?
They love BEAR Paws and took 32 seconds to eat all the packets. They love the packaging and taste in particular ie they think they are sweets...

  4. Do you think this snack was a suitable size for your child/ren? If so why, if not, why not?
Yes, as suitable size, though the children would like larger packets as they liked them so much

  5. Would you buy BEAR Paws again?
Yes, as they prefer the taste of them to BEAR yoyos.

  6. Would you recommend BEAR Paws to friends and family?
Yes have done and will again.

  1. How old are the DCs who took part in this test?

3 and 6

  1. Do you find it a challenge to get your DCs to eat fruit and veg/get their five a day?

The 3 year old eats 5 a day , my 6 year old is a struggle.

  1. What did your DCs think of BEAR Paws (taste, packaging, concept)? What did they like or dislike about them?

They love the packaging, the colours and design. I think it's very appealing to children. They totally get the concept. They loved the different type of paws!

  1. Do you think this snack was a suitable size for your child/ren? If so why, if not, why not?

Yes I do, I agree you do get quite a lot in a packet. But it's not a packet of sweets. I think it's a big enough packet to keep them quiet for a while!!!

  1. Would you buy BEAR Paws again?

Yes absolutely. I fact I currently buy the yo yo bears. My boys are familiar with the brand. I will buy these for snacks/out and about/lunch boxes.

  1. Would you recommend BEAR Paws to friends and family?

Yes, I would if it came up on conversation. I think they are a great healthy alternative to s packet of sweets! Intact my children thought they were sweets!!!

  1. How old are the DCs who took part in this test? DD is three
  2. Do you find it a challenge to get your DCs to eat fruit and veg/get their five a day? DD likes fruit and vegetables, but is quite particular about which ones she likes and it can be difficult to get her to eat new fruits or vegetables, she will try little bits but it can be hard to get her to eat a variety.
  3. What did your DCs think of BEAR Paws (taste, packaging, concept)? What did they like or dislike about them? She was really excited to receive her parcel, she loved that they are all different colours and enjoyed choosing which animal she wanted on her packet. She loves the taste and thinks they are sweeties!!
  4. Do you think this snack was a suitable size for your child/ren? If so why, if not, why not? Yes it was a good size, perfect for carrying round in my handbag.
  5. Would you buy BEAR Paws again? Yes, we really liked them - I enjoyed sharing them! They feel healthier than some dried fruit products and I was pleased with how little sugar is in them.
  6. Would you recommend BEAR Paws to friends and family? Yes, I know my friends with toddlers would love them as an alternative to raisins.
2boysnamedR · 31/07/2015 23:58
  1. I have four children so despite it being for my three year old, they all had a taste! I couldn't keep them off! 11 months, 3,7 and 11
  2. getting fruit into my three year old is hit and miss. His seems to have a few favourite fruits which change so I don't think we manage five diff fruits a day but at least two portion sizes is doable. Veg, that's not on favour right now but he will eat it, I'm hoping it's a passing dislike ;0)
  3. my older kids loved the packaging, they though it was fun and eye catching ( I hid them up high but my seven year old spotted them as he lives the yo yo's. My 11 year old liked the chart ( 3 year old only wanted to rip the packet out of my hand to shove in his face!). We all thought they had a nice taste and tasted like fruit
  4. The packs and shapes was a nice size, good for eating with more thought about what you was eating as opposed to eating a bar all in one go. They liked the shapes and two tone colours. We even had enough to share around in each pack ( I liked them too!). There was enough to spread into a few portions through the day
  5. I would buy them again for all of my kids. They would make a good after lunch treat or for those moments you want them to sit still for five minutes
  6. yes I would recommend them, I was surprised they was so tasty for a real fruit product
BathshebaDarkstone · 01/08/2015 06:36

My DC are 3 and 7.

I don't find it a challenge to get DS 3 to get his 5 a day, I do with DD 7 as she only likes apples.

My DC already love Bear Paws and we actually had a box of Jungle Paws on the shelf when we did the trial! They love the taste, packaging and concept.

I do think that the snack is a suitable snack for my children, they have it for morning and afternoon snack and they don't ask for more, so it must be enough.

We buy Bear Paws quite regularly and will definitely be buying them again.

I would definitely recommend Bear Paws to friends and family.

  1. How old are the DCs who took part in this test? DS has just turned 3.
  2. Do you find it a challenge to get your DCs to eat fruit and veg/get their five a day? No, he is very good - a relief, given that he is dairy and soya intolerant. I made a list for the dietitian recently of types that he eats, and in a typical week he eats 10-15 different varieties of veg, and 8 of fruit. He likes minestrone!
  3. What did your DCs think of BEAR Paws (taste, packaging, concept)? What did they like or dislike about them? I'm afraid the packaging went way over his head, he's too excited by treats in packets! He kind of got the concept of the footprints, but didn't really stop to admire. When it comes to food, DS is not subtle. He loved them though, judging by the speed with which they disappeared.
  4. Do you think this snack was a suitable size for your child/ren? If so why, if not, why not? Yes, it was a good size.
  5. Would you buy BEAR Paws again? Definitely. A big plus was that they are not sticky (the one thing DS seems to hate). It's also so nice to find something like this that he can have, given his intolerances.
  6. Would you recommend BEAR Paws to friends and family? Yes.

  2. Do you find it a challenge to get your DCs to eat fruit and veg/get their five a day?
No, luckily they both love fruit and veg.

  3. What did your DCs think of BEAR Paws (taste, packaging, concept)? What did they like or dislike about them?
they loved them as soon as i opened the box they were jumping up and down as they recognized the packaging. they have had the yoyo's before and are always asking for them but they are a rear treat as our supermarket doesnt stock them.
they love the taste, shapes, texture, packaging and everything about them.

  4. Do you think this snack was a suitable size for your child/ren? If so why, if not, why not?
yes, perfect size for a snack. only at meal times though as they do get stuck in their teeth and i dont want to cause problems with their teeth.

  5. Would you buy BEAR Paws again?
yes provided i can find them, the only place i seem to find the yoyo.s is a trip to subway!

  6. Would you recommend BEAR Paws to friends and family?
    yes

  1. How old are the DCs who took part in this test?
    3yo twins, 5 and 7.

  2. Do you find it a challenge to get your DCs to eat fruit and veg/get their five a day?
Yes. Mainly getting their veg portions as I could get 5 fruit in them a day with careful planning and snacking. This last academic year they have all had free fruit snack at school, which has helped a lot but our eldest will be going up to juniors from sept so no longer eligible to have free, we will have to send a snack in.

  3. What did your DCs think of BEAR Paws (taste, packaging, concept)? What did they like or dislike about them? The dc loved them. They identified the ones they wanted by the character on the packet (thankfully no arguments). I think the pack could do with one of those 'tear here' strips to take one side off as the younger 3 had to have the pack opened for them. I'd worry if they did try it themselves, they'd spill them everywhere whereas the strip to take the side off wouldn't have the same issue.

I think they looked at each piece as they ate it, which was nice as they weren't just scoffed straight down. They loved that they were paw shaped.

They each tried a piece of the others and all liked all flavours. Dh and I also tried some. The flavours weren't too strong - this has been a problem with some concentrates fruit pieces we've tried in the past. I think the combination of flavours complimented each other well and contributed to this. There were certainly no complaints from the children and they were well aware there were some fruits they normally turn their noses up at when in their natural state.

  1. Do you think this snack was a suitable size for your child/ren? If so why, if not, why not?
There were a surprising amount of pieces in the pack. As a snack, they were a great size and it was good to know each pack has 1 daily portion in it. Sometimes portion sizes can seem a bit daunting for the children and they struggle to eat a whole one.

  2. Would you buy BEAR Paws again? Yes I would, although when they are on offer as they are expensive for a regular purchase. They're currently on offer in Tesco so I have bought a box of each flavour.

  3. Would you recommend BEAR Paws to friends and family?
Yes I would. They would be a welcome change to the endless small pack sweet type goods. As they are also fruit and nothing else, they are also suitable for a family member with many allergies and intolerances so a welcome addition to their stocks of safe food in fun form.

  1. 3 and a half
  2. it can sometimes be hard, DD will eat vegetables in her dinner but isn't great with fruit, so these snacks are a handy way to get some into her as she thinks they are sweets / a treat
  3. DD loved the bright colours and the animals on the packets, and she loves the poster and stickers, they are right up her street. We have opened three of the four packets and she has liked all the flavours so far
  4. The packs have quite a bit in, which is good, but I think there is too much to have in one go. We have taken all week to eat three bags! I think they are a good size to carry about though so I wouldn't change the pack size.
  5. I would, yes
  6. Definitely, and they have already gone down well with DD's cousins!

  2. Do you find it a challenge to get your DCs to eat fruit and veg/get their five a day?
My 1 year old is really good, my 3 year old sticks to the same 3 fruit, she's quite difficult to get eating fruit.

  3. What did your DCs think of BEAR Paws (taste, packaging, concept)? What did they like or dislike about them?
My 3 year old ate a few and didn't like them. She liked looking and playing with them as she liked the paws on them. She liked the pink and yellow packets. I liked the design and feel of the packets. My 1 year old loved the taste. She ate them very fast!

  4. Do you think this snack was a suitable size for your child/ren? If so why, if not, why not?
Yes I think they were good sized packets and size of fruit.

  5. Would you buy BEAR Paws again?
If they were a good price then yes, they taste lovely and would be great for long car journeys.

  6. Would you recommend BEAR Paws to friends and family?
Yes! I love the design, taste and how natural they are.

1) How old are the DCs who took part in this test?

4 and 2

2) Do you find it a challenge to get your DCs to eat fruit and veg/get their five a day?

No, they love fresh fruit and I hide veg in loads of their food!

3) What did your DCs think of BEAR Paws (taste, packaging, concept)? What did they like or dislike about them?

They were very excited when the package came in the post. The eldest decided which one he wanted by the colour of the package so I think that works well. They both liked having their own individual package.

4) Do you think this snack was a suitable size for your child/ren? If so why, if not, why not?

Yes though the eldest didn't eat all of his packs. The packets are very good size for packing in a picnic lunch or a snack on the go.

5) Would you buy BEAR Paws again?

Yes as a handy & easy snack to have when we are out and about.

6) Would you recommend BEAR Paws to friends and family?

Yes.

Other notes

I felt the need to brush their teeth immediately after they ate the snack is so sticky (I do the same things when they eat raisins).

I like that they aren't too sweet, the flavour can even be a touch sharp which I think is good.
