This is the feedback thread for the 250 Mumsnetters who have been trying out Anchor butter and the baking kits with their children. Non testers - do check out the feedback from the testers PLUS what's your favourite flavour cake? Chocolate, Victoria Sponge, Carrot, something else? Add your comment to this thread and you'll be entered into a prize draw where one MNer will win a £250 voucher to spend in John Lewis (imagine all the baking kit you could get!)

Here's what Anchor says: “We're looking forward to seeing what MNers have created with our rich and creamy block butter. We know it's perfect for all types of tasty bakes, whether it's making the pastry for your homemade chicken pie, or millionaires shortbread for that weekend treat with the kids. At Anchor we've been making block butter for over 125 years, to bring bakers high quality, rich and creamy butter for their bakes."

Plenty of recipe ideas here – including delicious
ginger biscuits or does anyone fancy
Cheese Scones for a snack?

Below are the questions we'd like testers to answer, but please feel free to add your own comments too.

  1. What bakes did you and your DC create? Please post a photo or two on the thread of the finished result or of the baking session!

  2. What was your child’s favourite aspect of the baking process? Getting messy, licking the bowl at the end or anything in between!

  3. What was your favourite aspect of baking with your DC?

  4. If you don't normally use Anchor, do you think that your bakes taste different when using Anchor butter compared to your normal butter? Please explain.

  5. Do you normally use butter or margarine for baking? Do you usually use unsalted or salted butter for baking? How aware were you that using unsalted butter is great for baking?

  6. Were you pleased with the results of your baking?

  7. Would you use Anchor butter again for your baking? Why? Were you aware Anchor was the original block butter company having made butter for over 125 years? Is this important to you?

  8. If it came up in conversation, would you recommend Anchor butter to friends and family? Why?

All testers who leaves their feedback on this thread and who complete the survey (emailed to testers) will be entered in to a prize draw, where one lucky Mumsnet tester will win a £300 John Lewis voucher.

Thanks and good luck!

This product test came just at the right time as my children and I had just begun baking in earnest. The Anchor butter was easy to soften and beat in the mixture, resulting in great tasting cakes, buns and biscuits. As a result I have continued to purchase this block of butter for all my baking needs. It has also been used when making pastry which has also come out tops.

I also didn't know Anchor had been around for so long especially as when you look at supermarket shelves there are an inordinate amount of butter varieties. I think this fact in itself shows what a good product it is.

I will definitely be purchasing this in the future and happily informed family and friends of the results.

My responses:

butter. Sometimes stork too. I don't usually opt for unsalted. I think the but of salt gives the finished product a better taste.

  1. I was pleased with the end result. There is is a marked difference between using butter and margarine in this recipe.

  2. I think this trial has made me more inclined to use anchor butter. More than it being the original butter, I think I am also more inclined to go back to using it because my mum always used it. We never used to say "pass me the butter.", it was always "pass me the anchorbutter." Exactly like that, all as one word.

  3. I might. Not sure. I would definitely chose anchor over other butters if price was not a problem.

  1. What bakes did you and your DC create?

Coffee and walnut cake. It's an unusual favourite for children, but they've always enjoyed it! They're old before their time Smile

  1. What was your child’s favourite aspect of the baking process? Getting messy, licking the bowl at the end or anything in between!

They like gathering the ingredients together.

  1. What was your favourite aspect of baking with your DC?

The end results. We bake together a lot, so there wasn't much novelty to the baking process. We bake a lot because we're all greedy cake-lovers Grin

  1. If you don't normally use Anchor, do you think that your bakes taste different when using Anchor butter compared to your normal butter? Please explain.

I couldn't detect any difference in taste or consistency.

  1. Do you normally use butter or margarine for baking? Do you usually use unsalted or salted butter for baking? How aware were you that using unsalted butter is great for baking?

Butter, unless I'm making hundreds of buns for children's events, in which case I use Stork to keep costs down. Usually salted, but I'm not bothered either way.

  1. Were you pleased with the results of your baking?

Yes! Tasty cake and a happy family were what I always want from baking, and we achieved it.

  1. Would you use Anchor butter again for your baking? Why? Were you aware Anchor was the original block butter company having made butter for over 125 years? Is this important to you?

Perhaps. It's expensive compared to the brands I use, with no noticeable advantage. I never bought Anchor in the past because it was shipped all the way from New Zealand (seemed a wasteful and inefficient way to get butter) and I prefer to support British farmers, but I believe it's now produced in Britain so if it was on a good offer making it better value I would consider it.

  1. If it came up in conversation, would you recommend Anchor butter to friends and family? Why?

No, it's no better than any other butter I've used, but costs more.

  1. What bakes did you and your DC create? Please post aphoto or twoon the thread of the finished result or of the baking session!

We made chocolate cookies.

  1. What was your child’s favourite aspect of the baking process? Getting messy, licking the bowl at the end or anything in between!

Eating the resulting cookies!

  1. What was your favourite aspect of baking with your DC?

1 on 1 time with middle dc.

  1. If you don't normally use Anchor, do you think that your bakes taste different when using Anchor butter compared to your normal butter? Please explain.

Can't say I noticed a difference

  1. Do you normally use butter or margarine for baking? Do you usually use unsalted or salted butter for baking? How aware were you that using unsalted butter is great for baking?

I normally use either margarine or butter, depending on what the bake is, eg more likely to use butter for pastry. I tend to find that most recipes call for added salt anyway, so just omit that if I've used salted butter.

  1. Were you pleased with the results of your baking?

Yes

  1. Would you use Anchor butter again for your baking? Why? Were you aware Anchor was the original block butter company having made butter for over 125 years? Is this important to you?

The heritage of the company is not important to me. I would use whatever butter was on offer, and was shocked to find that anchor was more whitebait that what I would consider a luxury French brand.

  1. If it came up in conversation, would you recommend Anchor butter to friends and family? Why?

Not particularly, I didn't find it any better than any other butter.

  1. What bakes did you and your DC create? Please post a photo or two on the thread of the finished result or of the baking session!
We made cinnamon spiced star biscuits

  2. What was your child’s favourite aspect of the baking process? Getting messy, licking the bowl at the end or anything in between!
DD's absolutely most favourite part is licking the bowl or in this case, eating the biscuit dough, I had to act fast to get them in the oven!

  3. What was your favourite aspect of baking with your DC? Seeing how much she enjoys herself

  4. If you don't normally use Anchor, do you think that your bakes taste different when using Anchor butter compared to your normal butter? Please explain.
I think Anchor butter tastes similar to other butters, I didn't notice any difference

  5. Do you normally use butter or margarine for baking? Do you usually use unsalted or salted butter for baking? How aware were you that using unsalted butter is great for baking? I use a combination depending on what I'm making. I normally use unsalted butter and then add salt to taste. I like to use butter for scone and biscuits when a rubbing in method is required but soft margarine is easier for cakes.

  6. Were you pleased with the results of your baking? Yes, even if I do say so myself.

  7. Would you use Anchor butter again for your baking? Why? Were you aware Anchor was the original block butter company having made butter for over 125 years? Is this important to you? Probably not because it is quite a bit more expensive than shop's own butter. It's not important to me that Anchor have been making butter for 125 years.

  8. If it came up in conversation, would you recommend Anchor butter to friends and family? Why? I can't imagine a scenario in which this would occur, but, suspending disbelief, I would say Anchor butter is as good as other butters I have used.

We made a sponge cake which we decorated like a pizza for a special birthday for daddy.
I am a professional baker so I bake every day and my children are always desperate to join in.
This was fun for them as it was their project. They enjoyed cracking the eggs and sifting the flour and icing sugar the best.
I found the cake tasted richer and was a heavier consistency than normal as I usually use baking margarine for sponges and then butter for the buttercream.
The buttercream wasn't as nice as normal - I use willow for that but i think I am just used to the taste as I make it so often.
I really enjoyed baking with the kids and watching their faces peering into the oven every five minutes! But most of all I enjoyed decorating the cake with them and seeing how proud they were giving it to their dad.
I'm not sure I would use it for professional cakes as I like the lighter texture that margarine creates but I would use it for scones etc. and pastry.
again I don't think I would be raving to friends and family about it but then I don't think I would about any butter really!
I didn't know it had been around so long nor the NZ history. But I've never used it before.
Overall it was a great experience, thank you Anchor for a lovely afternoon.

Feedback from TuppyB is below

  1. What bakes did you and your children create? Please post a photo or two on the thread of the finished result or of the baking session!
We made chocolate brownies and chocolate banana bread, all of which turned out brilliantly.

  2. What was your child’s favourite aspect of the baking process? Getting messy, licking the bowl at the end or anything in between!
My son actually enjoyed eating the butter, which was weird, but true. They both like licking the bowl and the mess and general chaos.

  3. What was your favourite aspect of baking with your children?

It is lovely to be so close to them and for us all to be so relaxed and happy together, and I don't mind the mess and chaos because there is always cake to follow!

  1. If you don't normally use Anchor, do you think that your bakes taste different when using Anchor butter compared to your normal butter? Please explain.

There was a subtle difference in cooking, but it really shone on toast and crumpets so we now buy it more for the superior taste there.

  1. Do you normally use butter or margarine for baking? Do you usually use unsalted or salted butter for baking? How aware were you that using unsalted butter is great for baking?

I always use salted butter as it has never failed and is much healthier and far nicer.

  1. Were you pleased with the results of your baking?
    Yes, it went down well.

  2. Would you use Anchor butter again for your baking? Why? Were you aware Anchor was the original block butter company having made butter for over 125 years? Is this important to you?
Yes we are now buying anchor and I didn't know it was the original block butter. As a historian and archaeologist I found this interesting, but it would not affect my decision to buy it again. It won that honour purely on taste.

  3. If it came up in conversation, would you recommend Anchor butter to friends and family? Why?
Yes, it tastes great on toast and makes good cakes.

  1. What bakes did you and your DC create? Please post a photo or two on the thread of the finished result or of the baking session!
We made scones - hundreds of scones - mostly fruit but a few cheese too! We had a hot cross bun "bake off" which my son won! I made a New York cheesecake and the buttery biscuit base was sooo much better with Anchor block butter! My son made me a beautiful Victoria sponge with fresh cream and fresh berries in it. We made chocolate chip cookies as well, but not everything was photographed before it was eaten!!

  2. What was your child’s favourite aspect of the baking process? Getting messy, licking the bowl at the end or anything in between!
My son loves to measure the ingredients out, he is very mathematical and wont let us go even 1g either side! Makes for a long baking session Grin He also ADORES to lick the bowls and all baking implements and denies the use of spatulas as they clean the bowls too well Wink

  3. What was your favourite aspect of baking with your DC?
Its 1:1 time, which is precious as we have 3 children, work full time and care for an elderly parent! We like to sit by the oven watching things rise/brown minute by minute and of course, eating the end product is the best part of all!

  4. If you don't normally use Anchor, do you think that your bakes taste different when using Anchor butter compared to your normal butter? Please explain.
The bakes all tasted completely different with Anchor, much more buttery and creamy - and more yellow in colour, especially sponge cakes. We tend to use the whiter butters and own brand blocks and Anchor has made us realise who bland they are!

  5. Do you normally use butter or margarine for baking? Do you usually use unsalted or salted butter for baking? How aware were you that using unsalted butter is great for baking?
We use a mixture of Stork margarine and lightly salted block butter. I am not normally keen on unsalted butter but in the scones especially it did make a big difference.

  6. Were you pleased with the results of your baking?
Absolutely thrilled, to be honest, we dont have many disasters, but the taste and colour made such a difference that we will splash out on anchor more often now!

  7. Would you use Anchor butter again for your baking? Why? Were you aware Anchor was the original block butter company having made butter for over 125 years? Is this important to you?
As above, the Anchor made such a difference in taste and colour, that it was pretty obvious. I am not really bothered that it was the original block butter and has been made for so long though....

  8. If it came up in conversation, would you recommend Anchor butter to friends and family? Why?
I would recommend for certain things, but for others such as a chocolate cake or similar, I don't think it would make much difference.

Hi, thanks for the trial :-)

What bakes did you and your DC create? Please post a photo or two on the thread of the finished result or of the baking session!
We made some banana and chocolate chip cakes. We'd never tried this particular recipe before and thought it was a good way to use up a stash of over-ripe bananas.

What was your child’s favourite aspect of the baking process? Getting messy, licking the bowl at the end or anything in between! All of it! But DD1 particularly likes cracking eggs, and DD2 is a fan of mixing.

What was your favourite aspect of baking with your DC? Seeing how much they enjoy it. Oh and eating the finished result obviously!

If you don't normally use Anchor, do you think that your bakes taste different when using Anchor butter compared to your normal butter? Please explain. I've not used Anchor for baking before. As I've not made these particular cakes before I can't compare to the butter we would normal use, but they turned out very tasty!

Do you normally use butter or margarine for baking? Do you usually use unsalted or salted butter for baking? How aware were you that using unsalted butter is great for baking? I would normally use either butter or sometimes stork depending on what I'm making. If I remember to buy butter in specially than I would always buy unsalted as I know that it's better for baking (I can't remember where I heard that though!) but if I've not bought it in then I'd just use whatever butter we had in.

Were you pleased with the results of your baking? Yes the cakes turned out ok, I'd probably use less butter next time (this is probably down to the recipe than the Anchor though). You can tell they were ok as we made 24 of them yesterday and these were the only ones left for the photo :-)

Would you use Anchor butter again for your baking? Why? Were you aware Anchor was the original block butter company having made butter for over 125 years? Is this important to you? Whilst it's nice they've been making butter for so long it makes no difference to how likely I would be to buy it or not, all that I'm interested in is the taste and the price. I probably would buy it again, particularly if it's on special offer, but I'd need to make a few more things with it first to see how it fares.

If it came up in conversation, would you recommend Anchor butter to friends and family? Why? I can't imagine it coming up in conversation, but if it did I would say I'd tried it and liked it, but I wouldn't go all out to recommend it until I've used it some more.

Thanks again

1- What did we bake? Cherry buns & coconut flapjacks.

2 - what did DS enjoy? Measuring ingredients out & eating the results!

3- What did I enjoy? Watching DS measuring things out, spending time with him and seeing his proud face at the end.

4- Did bakes taste different? Yes they tasted richer.

6- we always use unsalted butter for baking (different brand).

7- pleased with results? Yes definitely. It was all very tasty.

8- I'd definitely use Anchor again. The results were good & it mixed well. I wasn't aware how old it is but it shows it's a tried & tested brand.

9- Would I recommend Anchor? Yes - I like passing on tips & think my friends & family would enjoy the taste / results.

So sorry AnnMumsnet for the delay in responding! We were unable to get on it for ages due to me travelling for work! Anyway:

Below are the questions we'd like testers to answer, but please feel free to add your own comments too.

  1. What bakes did you and your DC create? Please post a photo or two on the thread of the finished result or of the baking session! We created chocolate fondants as they are a family favourite and we are all crashing chocolate snobs so use decent butter to create the nice complimentary flavour with the Valrhona chocolate. We chose the Anchor unsalted so we could add our own salt and control the salt levels ourselves. We also made waffles (not a bake I grant you).

  2. What was your child’s favourite aspect of the baking process? Getting messy, licking the bowl at the end or anything in between! DD loves to get involved throughout and her favourite bit is probably doing anything I am cautious about, like cracking open the eggs as I do not want shell in the mix!

  3. What was your favourite aspect of baking with your DC? My DD's enthusiasm for it and the opportunity it gives me to espouse the importance of good ingredients by doing rather than preaching. It has backfired slightly as I can't appease her with cheap milk chocolate!

  4. If you don't normally use Anchor, do you think that your bakes taste different when using Anchor butter compared to your normal butter? Please explain. I normally use Lurpak unsalted and did not notice a difference with Anchor.

  5. Do you normally use butter or margarine for baking? Do you usually use unsalted or salted butter for baking? How aware were you that using unsalted butter is great for baking? I use unsalted butter mostly to control salt levels as I think this gives a better flavour but for a reliable sponge I often use stork as recommended by Mary Berry!

  6. Were you pleased with the results of your baking? Yes! Perfect runny chocolates middle and rich sponge outer.

  7. Would you use Anchor butter again for your baking? Why? Were you aware Anchor was the original block butter company having made butter for over 125 years? Is this important to you? Yes, it was very reliable and gave good flavour. I was not aware anchor was the original block butter company and, because I am nostalgic this will probably influence my buying in a positive way!

  8. If it came up in conversation, would you recommend Anchor butter to friends and family? Why yes, but I could never convince my nuclear age mother to stop using terrible 'spread' Grin.

  1. What bakes did you and your DC create? Please post a photo or two on the thread of the finished result or of the baking session!

We made 24 hour cookies - a bit of a faff as they need to be refrigerated for at least 24 hours before baking but the wait is worth it!

  1. What was your child’s favourite aspect of the baking process? Getting messy, licking the bowl at the end or anything in between!

Definitely licking the bowl the spatula and anything else that had mixture attached to it

  1. What was your favourite aspect of baking with your DC?

Choosing what to make and letting them work out the measurements

  1. If you don't normally use Anchor, do you think that your bakes taste different when using Anchor butter compared to your normal butter? Please explain.

I normally use any butter that's on offer - didn't really notice any difference using anchor

  1. Do you normally use butter or margarine for baking? Do you usually use unsalted or salted butter for baking? How aware were you that using unsalted butter is great for baking?

Normally unsalted but as above, any butter that's on offer, the cookies have sea salt sprinkled on them at the end so unsalted is deffo better in the mixture

  1. Were you pleased with the results of your baking?

They went down a treat!

  1. Would you use Anchor butter again for your baking? Why? Were you aware Anchor was the original block butter company having made butter for over 125 years? Is this important to you?

I always used to buy anchor as that was the brand that my Mum bought - it doesn't taste as good as it used to but I would use it again if it was on offer

  1. If it came up in conversation, would you recommend Anchor butter to friends and family? Why?

probably - didn't find anything to dislike but didn't really see that it was any different to any other butter

Sorry for the delay in posting Ann. My dd & I made shortbread with unsalted butter.

She loved the mixing (and testing the mix), rolling out and also the end result.

I enjoyed the time in the kitchen with her. She has already told me she wants to cook something harder next time.

We generally use a generic butter, I'm not sure we noticed a difference - perhaps we would have in frosting or if used as a spread.

The shortbread turned out beautifully - we were both happy with it.

I didn't know about Anchor being the oldest block butter - I'm not sure it would make a difference to my buying but I would recommend it if it came up in conversation.

Getting them involved and teaching them what to do

We usually use anchor as we love the creamy taste it produces wen baking

  1. Do you normally use butter or margarine for baking? Do you usually use unsalted or salted butter for baking? How aware were you that using unsalted butter is great for baking?
We usually use unsalted butter for baking as salted tends to spoilt the taste

Very pleased

  1. Would you use Anchor butter again for your baking? Why? Were you aware Anchor was the original block butter company having made butter for over 125 years? Is this important to you?

We made a definitive chocolate cake, a Nigella recipe, which has butter both in the main cake mix and in the icing.

She enjoyed tasting the mixture but she also likes the fact that she is quite autonomous now (she is 8) and can produce something almost entirely by herself. She also likes to do it as a gift (this is for Daddy!).

3) What was your favourite aspect of baking with your DC?

Seeing her grow in confidence and develop as a baker, as I enjoy cooking.

4) If you don't normally use Anchor, do you think that your bakes taste different when using Anchor butter compared to your normal butter? Please explain.

I liked its subtle taste. I do notice the difference between different fats I use. I thought the Anchor taste was subtle, buttery, just rich but not sickly.

6) Do you normally use butter or margarine for baking? Do you usually use unsalted or salted butter for baking? How aware were you that using unsalted butter is great for baking?

I usually use butter, as I prefer the taste. I tend to use unsalted butter, though, sometimes salted for savoury pastry.

7) Were you pleased with the results of your baking?

Yes. It was rich, especially the icing/ganache, with a slightly decadent taste. The butter handled nicely in baking and was easy for my daughter to bake with and mixed well.

8) Would you use Anchor butter again for your baking? Why? Were you aware Anchor was the original block butter company having made butter for over 125 years? Is this important to you?

I didn't know Anchor was the original block butter, though I was aware It was an old brand. I might well, it Is mostly dependent on cost and availability. I tend to buy own brands but do buy brands if I think there is an significant difference in taste or if they are better to handle.

9) If it came up in conversation, would you recommend Anchor butter to friends and family? Why?

I would say that I was very pleased with how easy it was to use and that it has a nice taste, without being too heavy.

My son (4) was very impressed with the bowl and spoon (he claims they're way better than what we were using before!)
We made shortbread biscuits - it's quite an easy recipe so he can do most of it and the weighing helps with his numbers.
He enjoys all the parts of baking and was very proud that HE'D made them.
I really enjoy baking and used to bake with my mum so I love spending time in the kitchen with my kids - I also think it's a very important life skill to learn.
I sometimes use baking margerine and I thought the Anchor made the biscuits taste better than normal and we were really pleased with the results. I'd use it again and recommend if it came up in conversation.

  1. What bakes did you and your DC create? Please post a photo or two on the thread of the finished result or of the baking session!
Victoria sponge with a buttercream filling

  2. What was your child’s favourite aspect of the baking process? Getting messy, licking the bowl at the end or anything in between!
They like weighing and measuring best but licking the bowl comes in a close second!

  3. What was your favourite aspect of baking with your DC?
It's always very funny but a trifle stressful.

  4. If you don't normally use Anchor, do you think that your bakes taste different when using Anchor butter compared to your normal butter? Please explain.
    Not much difference otherwise.

  5. Do you normally use butter or margarine for baking? Do you usually use unsalted or salted butter for baking? How aware were you that using unsalted butter is great for baking?
I always use salted butter and don't think unsalted butter is as good for baking

  6. Were you pleased with the results of your baking?
    Yes, tasted lovely

  7. Would you use Anchor butter again for your baking? Why? Were you aware Anchor was the original block butter company having made butter for over 125 years? Is this important to you?
Currently the only thing important is price! I would use it again if it were free.

  8. If it came up in conversation, would you recommend Anchor butter to friends and family? Why?
Not really because I wouldn't be able to recommend due to the price.
