This is the feedback thread for the 250 Mumsnetters who have been trying out Anchor butter and the baking kits with their children. Non testers - do check out the feedback from the testers PLUS what's your favourite flavour cake? Chocolate, Victoria Sponge, Carrot, something else? Add your comment to this thread and you'll be entered into a prize draw where one MNer will win a £250 voucher to spend in John Lewis (imagine all the baking kit you could get!)

Here's what Anchor says: “We're looking forward to seeing what MNers have created with our rich and creamy block butter. We know it's perfect for all types of tasty bakes, whether it's making the pastry for your homemade chicken pie, or millionaires shortbread for that weekend treat with the kids. At Anchor we've been making block butter for over 125 years, to bring bakers high quality, rich and creamy butter for their bakes."

Plenty of recipe ideas here – including delicious
ginger biscuits or does anyone fancy
Cheese Scones for a snack?

Below are the questions we'd like testers to answer, but please feel free to add your own comments too.

  1. What bakes did you and your DC create? Please post a photo or two on the thread of the finished result or of the baking session!

  2. What was your child’s favourite aspect of the baking process? Getting messy, licking the bowl at the end or anything in between!

  3. What was your favourite aspect of baking with your DC?

  4. If you don't normally use Anchor, do you think that your bakes taste different when using Anchor butter compared to your normal butter? Please explain.

  5. Do you normally use butter or margarine for baking? Do you usually use unsalted or salted butter for baking? How aware were you that using unsalted butter is great for baking?

  6. Were you pleased with the results of your baking?

  7. Would you use Anchor butter again for your baking? Why? Were you aware Anchor was the original block butter company having made butter for over 125 years? Is this important to you?

  8. If it came up in conversation, would you recommend Anchor butter to friends and family? Why?

All testers who leaves their feedback on this thread and who complete the survey (emailed to testers) will be entered in to a prize draw, where one lucky Mumsnet tester will win a £300 John Lewis voucher.

Thanks and good luck!

  1. What bakes did you and your DC create?

fairy cakes :)

  1. What was your child’s favourite aspect of the baking process? Getting messy, licking the bowl at the end or anything in between!

Eating the cake mixture, and then the left over icing at the end.

  1. What was your favourite aspect of baking with your DC?

We have fun, and chat in a way we don't doing other activities.

  1. If you don't normally use Anchor, do you think that your bakes taste different when using Anchor butter compared to your normal butter? Please explain.

They taste nicer, but I like the fact that you can take spread straight out of the fridge and use it, unlike butter.

  1. Do you normally use butter or margarine for baking? Do you usually use unsalted or salted butter for baking? How aware were you that using unsalted butter is great for baking?

I usually use margarine when cooking.

  1. Were you pleased with the results of your baking?
    Yes, we all were!

  2. Would you use Anchor butter again for your baking? Why? Were you aware Anchor was the original block butter company having made butter for over 125 years? Is this important to you?

I would use it again, but only if I was planning my baking ahead and remembered to take it out the the fridge in time.

  1. If it came up in conversation, would you recommend Anchor butter to friends and family? Why?

I would. It's all we used when growing up, and reminds me of my childhood.

create? Please post a photo or two on the thread of the finished result or of the baking session!

We made mix up cookies. So I make a cookie a dough and add whatever chocolate we have to hand.

  1. What was your child’s favourite aspect of the baking process? Getting messy, licking the bowl at the end or anything in between!

Just helping out. The mixing. The mashing. The weighing.

  1. What was your favourite aspect of baking with your DC?

Just teaching them and spending time with them.

  1. If you don't normally use Anchor, do you think that your bakes taste different when using Anchor butter compared to your normal butter? Please explain.
Had a lovely rich buttery taste.

  2. Do you normally use butter or margarine for baking? Do you usually use unsalted or salted butter for baking? How aware were you that using unsalted butter is great for baking?

I use margarine mainly due to price. Stick to unsalted for the bakes but do sometimes uses salted for icing to give a nice taste.

  1. Were you pleased with the results of your baking?
    Yes went down well.

  2. Would you use Anchor butter again for your baking? Why? Were you aware Anchor was the original block butter company having made butter for over 125 years? Is this important to you?
Yes I do use anchor when it is on offer. Mainly I use own brand.

  3. If it came up in conversation, would you recommend Anchor butter to friends and family? Why?

The taste was lovely and even at room temp it wasn't a big sloppy mess so I would recommend it especially for icing.

We bought more Anchor as it was on a good offer and made chewy chic chip cookies.
Best cookies we've made! No pictures as they lasted about an hour after baking Grin.
Grateful tester here - already posted on the thread about our main bake.
Thank you again Anchor & Mumsnet.

  1. What bakes did you and your DC create?
Chocolate cake, Victoria Sponge, apple crumble

  2. What was your child’s favourite aspect of the baking process?
    The weighing and mixing.

  3. What was your favourite aspect of baking with your DC?
    Specialness of our time together.

  4. If you don't normally use Anchor, do you think that your bakes taste different when using Anchor butter compared to your normal butter? Please explain.
Definite improvement - sponges springier and crumble was much crisper.

  5. Do you normally use butter or margarine for baking? Do you usually use unsalted or salted butter for baking? How aware were you that using unsalted butter is great for baking?
    Normally use unsalted spreadable butter.

  6. Were you pleased with the results of your baking?

  7. Would you use Anchor butter again for your baking? Why? Were you aware Anchor was the original block butter company having made butter for over 125 years? Is this important to you?
I have since switched to Anchor only for our baking - the improvement is obvious in our baking. I was not aware of how old the company is but I do find that traditional element appealing in a traditional pastime.

  8. If it came up in conversation, would you recommend Anchor butter to friends and family? Why?
Definitely recommend as it made such a difference, so simply.

Just bog standard fairy cakes :)

  1. What was your child’s favourite aspect of the baking process? Getting messy, licking the bowl at the end or anything in between!

Obviously licking the spoon!

  1. What was your favourite aspect of baking with your DC?

Eating the end result

  1. If you don't normally use Anchor, do you think that your bakes taste different when using Anchor butter compared to your normal butter? Please explain.

I didn't notice any difference tbh. I know that some people have been saying Anchor butter has changed since they moved production to the UK but I can tell.

  1. Do you normally use butter or margarine for baking? Do you usually use unsalted or salted butter for baking? How aware were you that using unsalted butter is great for baking?

Butter. Always butter. I usually use salted as the results taste better. Plus, a lot of recipes star 'use unsalted' but the tell you to add a teaspoon of salt?!?!?

  1. Were you pleased with the results of your baking?

Yes, very tasty

  1. Would you use Anchor butter again for your baking? Why? Were you aware Anchor was the original block butter company having made butter for over 125 years? Is this important to you?

Yes I would if it were on offer to make it comparable in price to my normal butter. Yes I was aware of Anchors heritage but as it wasn't produced in the UK using British milk I never used it. However, now manufacture has moved back to the UK I would consider it

  1. If it came up in conversation, would you recommend Anchor butter to friends and family? Why?

Yes

  1. What bakes did you and your DC create? Please post a photo or two on the thread of the finished result or of the baking session!

We made Shortbread

  1. What was your child’s favourite aspect of the baking process? Getting messy, licking the bowl at the end or anything in between!

Mixing with her fingers!

  1. What was your favourite aspect of baking with your DC?

I always enjoy spending one to one time with them and baking is a great way to do this.

  1. If you don't normally use Anchor, do you think that your bakes taste different when using Anchor butter compared to your normal butter? Please explain.

I always use Anchor as the taste is superior.

  1. Do you normally use butter or margarine for baking? Do you usually use unsalted or salted butter for baking? How aware were you that using unsalted butter is great for baking?

I use butter because it tastes so much nicer. I always use salted as I wasn't aware that unsalted was good for baking - I will try this :)

  1. Were you pleased with the results of your baking?

Yup it tasted yummy and lasted about 5 seconds!

  1. Would you use Anchor butter again for your baking? Why? Were you aware Anchor was the original block butter company having made butter for over 125 years? Is this important to you?

I will be using it again (there are 8 pats in my fridge at the moment!) It isn't important to me how old the company is - just the quality of the product.

  1. If it came up in conversation, would you recommend Anchor butter to friends and family? Why?

I would as I feel it is the best butter in the supermarkets :)

I'm really sorry but pictures were totally beyond me this time! As my pack took an AGE to arrive I did actually buy Anchor butter in advance of it arriving as I wanted to be able to take part still!

  1. What bakes did you and your DC create? Please post a photo or two on the thread of the finished result or of the baking session!

We made a golden syrup sponge pudding.

  1. What was your child’s favourite aspect of the baking process? Getting messy, licking the bowl at the end or anything in between!

I dedicated this time to my eldest. He loved being in charge of the mixing (with a mixer!) and we all licked the beaters and bowls afterwards!

  1. What was your favourite aspect of baking with your DC?

I don't spend as much time as I should with him one on one so I really liked just taking the time to do something with him!

  1. If you don't normally use Anchor, do you think that your bakes taste different when using Anchor butter compared to your normal butter? Please explain.

Actually I didn't really find it any different, I normally use supermarket own - sorry Anchor!

  1. Do you normally use butter or margarine for baking? Do you usually use unsalted or salted butter for baking? How aware were you that using unsalted butter is great for baking?

I always use butter. I always use salted though for some reason!

  1. Were you pleased with the results of your baking?

Very, the pudding was lovely, and small boys face was a picture when it came out of the oven!

  1. Would you use Anchor butter again for your baking? Why? Were you aware Anchor was the original block butter company having made butter for over 125 years? Is this important to you?

I had no idea that they have made butter for 125 but I'm not sure it is that important to me. I probably would use Anchor butter again but only if it was on special offer!

  1. If it came up in conversation, would you recommend Anchor butter to friends and family? Why?

Probably not to be honest. I would recommend "butter" in a general sense but not necessarily Anchor. Sorry again!

Rhumba · 05/05/2015 13:08

Hi, Thanks for the chance to test this. I often bake with my DC so we decided to do the cheese scones and also choc chip cookies which is a favourite of ours. both mine enjoy all aspects of baking and probably the eating bit being the best. I enjoy the time spent with them and seeing what they can manage as feel this is an essential life skill.
I must admit I would struggle to taste any difference in the end product especially with all the chocolate and the cheese scones was a new recipe but would possibly agreed that easier to mix than some butters. I would normally use baking margarine unless recipe specifically asks for butter and then tend to use unsalted butter

really pleased with the result which didn't last long once out the oven. not sure if I would use Anchor as typically use a cheaper butter. Not aware Anchor around so long and not sure how important this is to me.

Wouldn't necessarily recommended it over any other butter.

    Dr who biscuits

  2. What was your child’s favourite aspect of the baking process? Getting messy, licking the bowl at the end or anything in between!
She loves it all, especially cutting out the biscuit shapes though.

  3. What was your favourite aspect of baking with your DC?
I love her growing independence and sharing her enjoyment.

  4. If you don't normally use Anchor, do you think that your bakes taste different when using Anchor butter compared to your normal butter? Please explain.
I didn't notice a different taste to other real butter, but it tasts less synthetic than any spread we have tried.

  5. Do you normally use butter or margarine for baking? Do you usually use unsalted or salted butter for baking? How aware were you that using unsalted butter is great for baking?
I use what we have but prefer unsalted .

  6. Were you pleased with the results of your baking?
    Yes

  7. Would you use Anchor butter again for your baking? Why? Were you aware Anchor was the original block butter company having made butter for over 125 years? Is this important to you?
Yes, the biscuits were yummy. I dint know but like companies with heritage.

  8. If it came up in conversation, would you recommend Anchor butter to friends and family? Why?
Can't see me recommending as I don't think it would come up.

Here's the feedback from toptomatoes

  1. What bakes did you and your DC create? Please post a photo or two on the thread of the finished result or of the baking session!
We made smartie cookies, they all got eaten before I took a picture (we had guests round!)

  2. What was your child’s favourite aspect of the baking process? Getting messy, licking the bowl at the end or anything in between!

My 4 year old likes weighing and mixing and the 8 year old likes the licking! The toddler likes being a menace and wants to do everything!

  1. What was your favourite aspect of baking with your DC?

They all love baking, we make bread and pizza dough frequently and they gobble that up. They have so much fun and it is nice to do it all together.

  1. If you don't normally use Anchor, do you think that your bakes taste different when using Anchor butter compared to your normal butter? Please explain.

We use own brand unsalted butter for baking and I did find the anchor creamed really nicely with the sugar but I don't think the end result was much different.

  1. Do you normally use butter or margarine for baking? Do you usually use unsalted or salted butter for baking? How aware were you that using unsalted butter is great for baking?

We normally use unsalted butter for everything, both spreading and baking. I like to cut down on salt where possible so we don't use salted butter (although it tastes so good on toast!). I think unsalted butter is more multi purpose for baking anyway.

  1. Were you pleased with the results of your baking?

Yes, they smelled gorgeous and got gobbled up in a heartbeat.

  1. Would you use Anchor butter again for your baking? Why? Were you aware Anchor was the original block butter company having made butter for over 125 years? Is this important to you?

Yes but only if it is on offer to make it not much more than our usual butter. It's nice to bake with but I wouldn't pay a premium for it, the cookies always get gobbled up! It's nice that the company have such longevity but it wouldn't be much of a consideration when deciding which butter to buy.

  1. If it came up in conversation, would you recommend Anchor butter to friends and family? Why?

Yes, it creamed so nicely and also has the edge when spreading so I think my baker friends would like it.

  3. If you don't normally use Anchor, do you think that your bakes taste different when using Anchor butter compared to your normal butter? Please explain. I usually buy whatever is cheapest. 5. Were you pleased with the results of your baking? very. the cakes tasted fab

fixuplooksharp · 06/05/2015 12:11

We made brownies, my DS (6) and even my DS (2.5) helped too.
Licking the bowl was a definate favourite part, both of them, oh ok me too :)
My best part was seeing the boys doing things by themselves and taking pride in what they were doing. They loved it!
I usually always use lurpak, I foudn Anchor not as creamy but more sustainable.
I usually use butter for baking and everything else, I don't have Marg in the house.
We were all really pleased with the results, so pleased there were barely any left for DH to try when he finished work :)
I would use it again, and after baking with it, my eldest son had it on toast and said it was his favorite butter.
Thanks for the trial :)

FrankWelker · 06/05/2015 12:27

We made Belgian waffles
Best bit was eating them at the end
I liked doing something just the two of us
I didn't notice a difference
I use any unsalted butter for baking.
I was very happy and would use again. I knew it was 125 years old.
I would recommend it as the waffles were great!

GlitzAndGigglesx · 06/05/2015 12:42
  1. We made chocolate muffins with glacé cherries mixed in

  2. DD's (4yo) favourite part was the mixing. She really goes for it

  3. I could teach her more responsibility in the kitchen and different ingredients

  4. I've not used it before so used a bit more than the recipe stated to get a more moist result

  5. I usually use salted butter. I'd never thought to use unsalted before and can't say I noticed a huge difference

  6. Yes I seemed to enjoy them more than dd who only wanted to pick out the chocolate chips

  7. Yes I would. I only buy branded anyway as I prefer it to supermarkets own. No I wasn't aware

  8. Yes I would. I was very happy with the good results

1) What bakes did you and your DC create? Please post a photo or two on the thread of the finished result or of the baking session!
We made millionaire's shortbread - DDs choice, and something we'd never made before.

2) What was your child’s favourite aspect of the baking process?
Getting messy, licking the bowl at the end or anything in between!

Always, always, always licking the bowl!

3) What was your favourite aspect of baking with your DC?
Spending some one-on-one time with my eldest

4) If you don't normally use Anchor, do you think that your bakes taste different when using Anchor butter compared to your normal butter? Please explain.
Not really. I use whatever butter is on offer and have only found one brand I couldn't get on with

6) Do you normally use butter or margarine for baking? Do you usually use unsalted or salted butter for baking? How aware were you that using unsalted butter is great for baking?
Always use butter, and usually unsalted. I've trialled butter/marge/spreads and butter gives by far the best taste.

7) Were you pleased with the results of your baking?
Very! The biscuits are lovely!

8) Would you use Anchor butter again for your baking? Why? Were you aware Anchor was the original block butter company having made butter for over 125 years? Is this important to you?
Yes I would, but only if it was on offer, it's not different enough to supermarket own-brand to justify the extra cost. I wasn't aware, but it makes no difference to my purchasing decision.

9) If it came up in conversation, would you recommend Anchor butter to friends and family? Why?
Again, only if on offer! I would always recommend pure butter for baking though!

We made a Rainbow cake!

  1. What was your child’s favourite aspect of the baking process? Getting messy, licking the bowl at the end or anything in between!

Licking the Cake dough that sticks to the spatula! Actually, Being in the kitchen cooking/baking something herself itself a BIG achievement for her! On top of it, Aprons, measuring and mixing makes her more proud!

Cupcakes

  1. What was your child’s favourite aspect of the baking process?

Cooking by herself (almost!), watching them bake and tasting

  1. What was your favourite aspect of baking with your DC?

Tasting and analysing afterwards - we treated it as a bit of an experiment as I wanted to compare with our favourite butter

  1. If you don't normally use Anchor, do you think that your bakes taste different when using Anchor butter compared to your normal butter? Please explain.

I normally purchase unsalted and add just a smidge of salt. We coukld definitely taste more salt than usual and the cupcakes were more yellow in colour - not an issue but was in the buttercream which wasn't as pale

  1. Do you normally use butter or margarine for baking? Do you usually use unsalted or salted butter for baking? How aware were you that using unsalted butter is great for baking?

Always use unsalted and much prefer for baking - I couldn't find an unsalted Anchor in my local supermarket though :(

  1. Were you pleased with the results of your baking?

Okay the sponge was light but more golden in colour than usual - we preferred our usual unsalted though but this was down to the saltier taste.

  1. Would you use Anchor butter again for your baking? Why? Were you aware Anchor was the original block butter company having made butter for over 125 years? Is this important to you?

Possibly if I could buy an unsalted version if not then No we preferred the taste of Lurpak and it is paler in colour which for baking is preferable - the tradition is nice to know but not a decision maker. Price is obviously important as well.

  1. If it came up in conversation, would you recommend Anchor butter to friends and family? Why?

No sorry - Lurpak is our family favourite, shame we would have liked a British one...

I wouldn't say it made much different to flavour although it was rather frustrating that no where locally seems to sell the unsalted butter so we had to use salted.
