This is the feedback thread for the 250 Mumsnetters who have been trying out Anchor butter and the baking kits with their children. Non testers - do check out the feedback from the testers PLUS what's your favourite flavour cake? Chocolate, Victoria Sponge, Carrot, something else? Add your comment to this thread and you'll be entered into a prize draw where one MNer will win a £250 voucher to spend in John Lewis (imagine all the baking kit you could get!)

Here's what Anchor says: “We're looking forward to seeing what MNers have created with our rich and creamy block butter. We know it's perfect for all types of tasty bakes, whether it's making the pastry for your homemade chicken pie, or millionaires shortbread for that weekend treat with the kids. At Anchor we've been making block butter for over 125 years, to bring bakers high quality, rich and creamy butter for their bakes."

Plenty of recipe ideas here – including delicious
ginger biscuits or does anyone fancy
Cheese Scones for a snack?

Below are the questions we'd like testers to answer, but please feel free to add your own comments too.

  1. What bakes did you and your DC create? Please post a photo or two on the thread of the finished result or of the baking session!

  2. What was your child’s favourite aspect of the baking process? Getting messy, licking the bowl at the end or anything in between!

  3. What was your favourite aspect of baking with your DC?

  4. If you don't normally use Anchor, do you think that your bakes taste different when using Anchor butter compared to your normal butter? Please explain.

  5. Do you normally use butter or margarine for baking? Do you usually use unsalted or salted butter for baking? How aware were you that using unsalted butter is great for baking?

  6. Were you pleased with the results of your baking?

  7. Would you use Anchor butter again for your baking? Why? Were you aware Anchor was the original block butter company having made butter for over 125 years? Is this important to you?

  8. If it came up in conversation, would you recommend Anchor butter to friends and family? Why?

All testers who leaves their feedback on this thread and who complete the survey (emailed to testers) will be entered in to a prize draw, where one lucky Mumsnet tester will win a £300 John Lewis voucher.

Thanks and good luck!

What bakes did you and your DC create? Please post a photo or two on the thread of the finished result or of the baking session!
We baked cupcakes for my son's classmates to celebrate his Birthday! I should confess that first pack of Anchor butter I used to make buttercream for my son's birthday cake as I run out of unsalted butter. One pack was enough to decorate cake with buttercream and it was delicious ;P than I bought one more (this time without voucher:) to bake cupcakes which were yummy too!

  1. What was your child’s favourite aspect of the baking process? Getting messy, licking the bowl at the end or anything in between!
My son loves to crack eggs, mix everything or beat with mixer,he also likes to weight ingredients and add everything in one ball.Of course like other kids he likes to lick and try everything possible while he bakes:)

  2. What was your favourite aspect of baking with your DC?

I love to bake with my son and we were baking together for ages but now his 7 month old baby brother need a lot of my time and there isn't much left for baking.Baking with child is best experience you can get for them,it is messy takes longer time but is fun to bake at home

  1. If you don't normally use Anchor, do you think that your bakes taste different when using Anchor butter compared to your normal butter? Please explain.
I usually don't use Anchor, instead I buy Kerrygold, Lurpak, Yeo valley, Rachels organic, president butter. I really liked the taste of cupcakes and buttercream was delicious too and my son told that everything is yummy.Anchor was good choice for baking if compared with my usuall butter choice, very pleased with results.

  2. Do you normally use butter or margarine for baking? Do you usually use unsalted or salted butter for baking? How aware were you that using unsalted butter is great for baking?
I usually use butter,it is more expensive but the taste.mmm... it is impossible to compare butter and margarine in baking as butter will always be superior.I like to use usnalted butter for buttercream and salted one for cakes, biscuits, cupcakes as I don't need to remember to add pinch of salt to my batter,as tiny bit of salt in makes baking more delicious:)

  3. Were you pleased with the results of your baking?
yes, very pleased.I even bought more Anchor butter as it was on promotion 2 for 2 £ whish is very good price.

  4. Would you use Anchor butter again for your baking? Why? Were you aware Anchor was the original block butter company having made butter for over 125 years? Is this important to you?
I wasn't aware that Anchor was 125 years old and to be honest packaging somehow always put me off buying this butter. For me more important is taste and price of butter than age of company.I really liked Anchor butter and will definitely buy it in future. Thanks a lot for choosing us to trial,as it was fun to do baking and decorating, yummy to eat and great to know that there is one more delicious butter brand!

  5. If it came up in conversation, would you recommend Anchor butter to friends and family? Why?
yes, sure! it is good butter! Expensive like all other butters but affordable when on promotion!Good for baki

  1. What bakes did you and your DC create? Please post a photo or two on the thread of the finished result or of the baking session!
DD (5) and I made chocolate brownies. No photos I'm afraid as DD accidently erased them!

  2. What was your child’s favourite aspect of the baking process? Getting messy, licking the bowl at the end or anything in between!
DD loved mixing and getting messy. Oh and eating them afterwards obviously.

  3. What was your favourite aspect of baking with your DC?
It was just lovely to spend some time together, just the two of us, doing something that we both enjoy.

  4. If you don't normally use Anchor, do you think that your bakes taste different when using Anchor butter compared to your normal butter? Please explain.
For baking, I normally use whichever butter is on offer and I couldn't taste the difference using Anchor, sorry!

  5. Do you normally use butter or margarine for baking? Do you usually use unsalted or salted butter for baking? How aware were you that using unsalted butter is great for baking?
I use both salted and unsalted butter for baking, never margarine. I don't really know which is best to use (salted or unsalted) so just go with whichever is cheapest!

  6. Were you pleased with the results of your baking?
Very! They went down well with all the family!

  7. Would you use Anchor butter again for your baking? Why? Were you aware Anchor was the original block butter company having made butter for over 125 years? Is this important to you?
I would use Anchor butter again, although probably only if it was the cheapest option. To be honest butter is butter to me, I cant really taste the difference. It is not important to me that Anchor was the original block butter company.

  8. If it came up in conversation, would you recommend Anchor butter to friends and family? Why?
Probably not, for the reasons given above.

  5. Do you normally use butter or margarine for baking? Do you usually use unsalted or salted butter for baking? How aware were you that using unsalted butter is great for baking? sometimes utterly butterly for cakes as its easier to cream, always butter for biscuits, unsalted

  6. Were you pleased with the results of your baking? yes but we have made these before

  7. Would you use Anchor butter again for your baking? Why? Were you aware Anchor was the original block butter company having made butter for over 125 years? Is this important to you? I buy based on lowest price so if not on offer then no!

  1. What bakes did you and your DC create? Please post a photo or two on the thread of the finished result or of the baking session!

We made chocolate chips cookies, sorry that I don't have any photos to post, the baking session was a bit chaotic with dd who is 3 and afterwards they were so yummy that I completely forgot to take photosGrin

  1. What was your child’s favourite aspect of the baking process? Getting messy, licking the bowl at the end or anything in between!

She loved pouring the ingredient in the bowl, and helping me to mix as well as eating the dough

  1. What was your favourite aspect of baking with your DC?

To watch her enjoy herself

  1. If you don't normally use Anchor, do you think that your bakes taste different when using Anchor butter compared to your normal butter? Please explain.

I usually use stork in my cooking, this was definitely better, more buttery

  1. Do you normally use butter or margarine for baking? Do you usually use unsalted or salted butter for baking? How aware were you that using unsalted butter is great for baking?

I usually use margarine (stork).

  1. Were you pleased with the results of your baking?

Very pleased, we wished we made more batter :)

  1. Would you use Anchor butter again for your baking? Why? Were you aware Anchor was the original block butter company having made butter for over 125 years? Is this important to you?

We would definitely use it again, as it made the cookies a lot tastier than usual.

  1. If it came up in conversation, would you recommend Anchor butter to friends and family? Why?

Yes because I feel this is a quality product.

tester here...I'm adding feedback from my phone as I just can't access the thread from my ipad...It just keeps hanging. so, means I can't add my pictures just yet.

  1. ds and I made a chocolate cake with butter cream filling
  1. ds enjoyed licking the beaters and the bowl...In fact I had barely finished mixing when he was asking fur the beaters to lick Grin he also particularly likes it when the oven beeps to tell us the cake is ready!
  1. I must admit I don't really enjoy baking with the children Blush it's just too faffy for my liking and I can't concentrate. In saying that, it was good to spend time just with dc3 and of course having a yummy cake to scoff at the end was a bonus!
  1. I normally use lurpak it Grahams spreadable, I never bother buying block butter for baking as I just use what I have in at the time. I didn't honestly notice a difference in taste/texture/quality.
  1. I always use butter for baking as I don't buy margarine but my dear old mum swears by margarine and she is a very good Baker.
  1. We were all super pleased with our cake...It only lasted 2 days Grin

I would definitely use Anchor butter again and I would recommend it but I wouldn't make a special trip to the shops just to but it.

I absolutely did not know that Anchor were the original block butter

Thanks for the opportunity, ds and I had fun Smile

Tester here.

  1. DD wanted to test out her new Bunny shaped cutters so we made shortbread.

  2. She enjoys all aspects of baking especially the weighing, rolling, testing (most important) and end results.

  3. I enjoy seeing the confidence it gives her to make something that people enjoy the results of.

  4. I normally use a spread for cooking as I though it was easier to work with, I have actually found that Anchor is easier to cream with sugar.

  5. I normally use salted as I prefer the flavour.

  6. The results are great, the butter has definitely improved the flavour.

  7. I will definitely use Anchor again for cooking and was not previously aware that Anchor was the original block butter.

  8. I already recommend Anchor as a nicer tasting butter for bread and I will let the results of this shortbread speak for itself in it's recommendation.

  1. What bakes did you and your DC create? Please post a photo or two on the thread of the finished result or of the baking session!
We made chocolate fairy cakes and I then used the butter in a salmon and asparagus risotto.

  2. What was your child’s favourite aspect of the baking process? Getting messy, licking the bowl at the end or anything in between!
My dd loves to pick the bowl ((and spoons!) And she loves the decorating.

  3. What was your favourite aspect of baking with your DC?
Seeing her exciting and enthused about the whole process, and getting to spend time one on one with her.

  4. If you don't normally use Anchor, do you think that your bakes taste different when using Anchor butter compared to your normal butter? Please explain.
I must admit that I didn't notice any difference in the cakes, I usually buy organic butter, but the risotto was particularly tasty.

  5. Do you normally use butter or margarine for baking? Do you usually use unsalted or salted butter for baking? How aware were you that using unsalted butter is great for baking?
I always choose unsalted butter in baking.

  6. Were you pleased with the results of your baking?
    Yes very!

  7. Would you use Anchor butter again for your baking? Why? Were you aware Anchor was the original block butter company having made butter for over 125 years? Is this important to you?
I was happy with the results, but wouldn't usually pick anchor as I thought it was still made in nz - although I know see it is made here now. I prefer to buy organic butter however.
I didn't know about the history, which is interesting but wouldn't affect my decision to buy.

  8. If it came up in conversation, would you recommend Anchor butter to friends and family? Why?
If asked I would tell them I was happy with the results but that I have read on here the cows are now grain fed here rather than grass fed in nz.

chocolate courgette cake

  1. What was your child’s favourite aspect of the baking process? Getting messy, licking the bowl at the end or anything in between!

doing it themselves and licking the bowl of course!

seeing their sense of pride when tasting the baked goodies!

  1. If you don't normally use Anchor, do you think that your bakes taste different when using Anchor butter compared to your normal butter? Please explain.

much richer - definitely worth the extra time and thinking ahead to allow it to get to room temp (for baking would normally use a spreadable butter)

  1. Do you normally use butter or margarine for baking? Do you usually use unsalted or salted butter for baking? How aware were you that using unsalted butter is great for baking?

spreadable butter, unsalted. know it usually tastes good, although some recipes particularly chocolate ones, call for a little salt.

  1. Were you pleased with the results of your baking?
i was pleased, children were ecstatic (and very proud).

  2. Would you use Anchor butter again for your baking? Why? Were you aware Anchor was the original block butter company having made butter for over 125 years? Is this important to you?

yes, would use again due to rich results - wasn't aware of history so as such not overly important but did grow up with anchor butter so sense of nostalgia there which is subconsciously important.

  1. If it came up in conversation, would you recommend Anchor butter to friends and family? Why? would mention rich taste and childhood use - like the continuity for my own children.

  4. If you don't normally use Anchor, do you think that your bakes taste different when using Anchor butter compared to your normal butter? Please explain.
I go between different butters and have used Anchor before when baking but didn't notice any real difference, there were a lot of strong flavours going on with our bakes!

  5. Do you normally use butter or margarine for baking? Do you usually use unsalted or salted butter for baking? How aware were you that using unsalted butter is great for baking?
I do usually use unsalted butter and was aware that it is better for baking with.

  1. What bakes did you and your DC create? Please post a photo or two on the thread of the finished result or of the baking session! We made a coffee cake for Grandma's Birthday
  2. What was your child’s favourite aspect of the baking process? Getting messy, licking the bowl at the end or anything in between! Cracking the eggs, he loves the squish as they break between his fingers
  3. What was your favourite aspect of baking with your DC? It was lovely to make something together that would be a present for Grandma. It helps him understand that homemade presents can be just as good as Lego, Grandma certainly loved it.
  4. If you don't normally use Anchor, do you think that your bakes taste different when using Anchor butter compared to your normal butter? Please explain. It did cream with the sugar much quicker than my usual butter but I think it tasted the same
  5. Do you normally use butter or margarine for baking? Do you usually use unsalted or salted butter for baking? How aware were you that using unsalted butter is great for baking? I always use unsalted butter, but don't really mind which brand I buy. I think unsalted butter tastes much better than marg in cakes
  6. Were you pleased with the results of your baking? Yes, it was light and airy, the buttercream was lovely and silky
  7. Would you use Anchor butter again for your baking? Why? Were you aware Anchor was the original block butter company having made butter for over 125 years? Is this important to you? Yes, it was just as good as the other butters I buy. I didn't realise Anchor was the original block butter company but knew it had been around for quite a while. I don't feel that is overly important when deciding which butter to buy
  8. If it came up in conversation, would you recommend Anchor butter to friends and family? Why? Yes, it was creamy and made a good cake

1) What bakes did you and your DC create? Please post a photo or two on the thread of the finished result or of the baking session!

We have finally got round to baking! We made fairy cakes, using Mary Berry's recipe.

2) What was your child’s favourite aspect of the baking process? Getting messy, licking the bowl at the end or anything in between!

They love licking the bowl and mixing, although to be fair, I was putting in most of the hard work beating the mixture together. They like weighing things out and then 'testing' the ingredients to make sure that they are ok, like the butter (they eat butter, strange little things, along with the sugar, sprinkles, raisins etc when we are baking so I need to keep a good eye on the ingredients!)

3) What was your favourite aspect of baking with your DC?

It is just a nice time being with them, lots of different things to find in the cupboards, weigh out, mixing, chopping etc so it keeps their interest - especially as there will be cake at the end.

4) If you don't normally use Anchor, do you think that your bakes taste different when using Anchor butter compared to your normal butter? Please explain.

The cakes tasted really nice and creamy, but the thing I most noticed was the lovely yellow (not in an artificial way) of the cake mix.

6) Do you normally use butter or margarine for baking? Do you usually use unsalted or salted butter for baking? How aware were you that using unsalted butter is great for baking?

I normally use unsalted butter, because I read that the butter will be better than salted. Although Mary Berry says that margarine is good for baking, it is one of the few things I'd disagree on.

7) Were you pleased with the results of your baking?

They were lovely and light, very tasty!

8) Would you use Anchor butter again for your baking? Why? Were you aware Anchor was the original block butter company having made butter for over 125 years? Is this important to you?

I'd happily use it again, assuming it was an a good price. I wasn't aware about Anchor being the original block butter company and can't claim that it would be important. Price and good quality are far more important to me, so if it was at a good price, I would definitely buy it again.

9) If it came up in conversation, would you recommend Anchor butter to friends and family? Why?

Yes, lovely colour, lovely taste.

Thank you very much for baking kit!

  1. What bakes did you and your DC create? Please post a photo or two on the thread of the finished result or of the baking session! We made sausage rolls, lemon drizzle cake and coconut and lime cake. Will post photos when I can find them.

  2. What was your child’s favourite aspect of the baking process? Getting messy, licking the bowl at the end or anything in between!Dd likes being chief tester she's not all that bothered about doing much of the work tbh.

  3. What was your favourite aspect of baking with your DC? It gives us time to talk without her being distracted by screens.

  4. If you don't normally use Anchor, do you think that your bakes taste different when using Anchor butter compared to your normal butter? Please explain. I tend to use stork for baking to be honest I couldn't really tell the difference between the baking with Anchor and my usual baking.

  5. Do you normally use butter or margarine for baking? Do you usually use unsalted or salted butter for baking? How aware were you that using unsalted butter is great for baking?I use stork, I'm pretty sure that is unsalted. I knew unsalted was good for baking.

  6. Were you pleased with the results of your baking? Yes it all turned out well and was soon eaten up

  7. Would you use Anchor butter again for your baking? Why? Were you aware Anchor was the original block butter company having made butter for over 125 years? Is this important to you? I probably wouldn't buy Anchor for baking because of the price but we use Anchor for everyday use anyway. I only knew that it was 125 years old because of the wrapper tbh.

  8. If it came up in conversation, would you recommend Anchor butter to friends and family? Why? I'd recommend Anchor as a really nice tasty butter of course it would be up to them if they baked with it.

Mama2bubs · 23/04/2015 21:47

We made chocolate covered flapjacks.

Measuring the ingredients & licking the spoon.

Spending quality time with them & seeing them have fun.

I usually use supermarket own brand butter. I can't say I noticed a difference in taste.

I always use unsalted butter for baking unless the recipes states otherwise. I knew unsalted butter was suitable for baking.

The flapjacks were very tasty, & are disappearing fast.

I would use anchor again but maybe wait until it was on promotion. I didn't realise it's history but I don't think it'd be that important when purchasing butter.

It's a good butter but I don't think I'd recommend it over other (cheaper) butters which perform just as well.

  1. What bakes did you and your DC create? Please post a photo or two on the thread of the finished result or of the baking session!

We've made Chelsea buns, banana cake and chocolate muffins

  1. What was your child’s favourite aspect of the baking process? Getting messy, licking the bowl at the end or anything in between!

Cracking the eggs and licking the bowl/spoon

  1. What was your favourite aspect of baking with your DC?

I love baking with the kids, it is great to make something together and they love showing off their creations to their dad or sharing with their friends - they're so proud when they've made it themselves

  1. If you don't normally use Anchor, do you think that your bakes taste different when using Anchor butter compared to your normal butter? Please explain.

I don't usually use Anchor, I usually use supermarket own brand butter. Unfortunately I didn't really notice the difference.

  1. Do you normally use butter or margarine for baking? Do you usually use unsalted or salted butter for baking? How aware were you that using unsalted butter is great for baking?

Butter, always, never margarine - horrible stuff. I use salted butter most of the time - unsalted for a very few recipes where the flavour of the butter will really matter (and those sort of bakes I rarely do with the kids!)

  1. Were you pleased with the results of your baking?

Very pleased. While I didn't notice much of an improvement using Anchor I have no complaints either.

  1. Would you use Anchor butter again for your baking? Why? Were you aware Anchor was the original block butter company having made butter for over 125 years? Is this important to you?

I wasn't aware and it isn't important to me - not sure why it should be...? I would use Anchor again if there was a special offer or another reason to choose it.

  1. If it came up in conversation, would you recommend Anchor butter to friends and family? Why?

I don't think I would particularly say "you must must use Anchor" unprompted, but if someone asked if I had a positive or negative perception I would say positive.

MyNameIsInigoMontoya · 23/04/2015 23:34

(Non-tester) - I think my new favourite is Simnel cake, I love marzipan!

LoveAnchor · 24/04/2015 00:25

We had a great time baking, and loved the challenge!

The fun started on the day when kids were playing in the garden, and the postman delivered a medium-size brown parcel. The label on the parcel said 'Anchor Butter Baking Kit'. Kids couldn't wait to open it and see what's inside. In the box there was an apron, a mixing bowl and a plastic mixing spoon, which we put to good use soon enough.

I thought about how other children might be playing in their gardens, and how postmen might be delivering baking kits to lots of children in different parts of the country, and how those kids might be smiling too, running to their mums and sharing the excitement!

Now, to the questions.

1) What bakes did you and your DC create? Please post a photo or two on the thread of the finished result or of the baking session!

We chose to bake apple crumble, my son's absolute favourite of all times!

2) What was your child’s favourite aspect of the baking process? Getting messy, licking the bowl at the end or anything in between!

My son loves mixing (in this case flour, butter and sugar). My daughter likes to be trusted with cutting (under supervision). Both kids get really excited about weighing or measuring ingredients; and reading the recipe, so that they are 'in charge' of the process. They also like the feeling of knowing their favourite recipes by heart. But the best part of the process is obviously eating the results!!!

3) What was your favourite aspect of baking with your DC?

When I was growing up, my parents didn't teach me to cook, and to this day cooking doesn't appeal to me very much, which is a shame. But kids bring in the enthusiasm that is irresistible and contagious - baking with kids is fun! On a practical level, now that my kids are 10 and 7, they do really help, and we cook and bake things faster than I would on my own. They also love writing down in a notebook any adjustments or personal touches that we discover as we go through the same recipe a couple of times, and I'm very grateful for that!

4) If you don't normally use Anchor, do you think that your bakes taste different when using Anchor butter compared to your normal butter? Please explain.

Our apple crumble was more tasty than usual. Whether it was because of the butter or not, I find it hard to tell.

6) Do you normally use butter or margarine for baking? Do you usually use unsalted or salted butter for baking? How aware were you that using unsalted butter is great for baking?

Unsalted butter.

7) Were you pleased with the results of your baking?

Loved it!

8) Would you use Anchor butter again for your baking? Why? Were you aware Anchor was the original block butter company having made butter for over 125 years? Is this important to you?

Well, the main problem with Anchor butter for us was finding it in the shop, so that we can use the voucher, in the first place! We buy the weekly shop from Aldi, then top up in Co-op and small Tesco, none of which sell Anchor unsalted butter. I then found it in Asda but I don't regularly shop there.

Anchor baking challenge made me think about which butter is better, something I didn't consider before. Ingredients are the same for all brands, it seems, so the only differentiating factor I could previously see, was the price. If Anchor could explain how their production process is superior to other brands', or how the taste is better (perhaps based on reputable chefs' opinions?) then I would be more inclined to pay the premium price. Organic label would also make me it stand out for me. 125 years don't mean much - it's marketing language, and it's more about the company than the customer, but if this experience/history can be translated into meaningful, factual statements about quality and taste, then that would have an impact.

9) If it came up in conversation, would you recommend Anchor butter to friends and family? Why?

I would probably mention the baking campaign, and how we had lots of fun baking with Anchor. It really left me with a warm fuzzy feeling that I'm more than happy to share with friends and family!

I'm not entirely persuaded that Anchor butter is actually better than others, but I might give Anchor another try and see whether I come to a more definitive conclusion.

Thank you Anchor! :)

  1. We made a lemon tart

  2. Oldest child liked mixing and weighing, and eating the end result. Youngest one liked that the red bowl looked like Paddington's hat - I don't think I will be able to reclaim it for baking any time soon!

  3. It was great that they enjoyed themselves, once I got over my hygiene stress.

  4. I do sometimes use Anchor for baking and do I like it. Must confess I tend to choose whichever one is on offer, rather than a particular brand and don't notice the difference between butter brands. Maybe it isn't noticeable as I am never comparing them with each other at the same time, IYSWIM?

  5. I normally use spreadable butter for baking as I like the buttery taste, but never remember to take block butter out of the fridge in time for recipes that ask you to cream the butter. As this recipe was pastry though it came straight from the fridge. I usually use salted butter for baking, I know that unsalted is supposed to be better but whenever I have tried it I haven't really enjoyed the results as much. Especially chocolate cake - that is just so nothingy without salt! I find personally that using salted butter is better as there is no risk of putting too much in if you add the salt separately.

  6. Yes, I was pleased with my baking: it tasted delicious and disappeared very quickly.

  7. Yes I would use it again as it has done the job. I didn't know that Anchor was the original block butter company. It is very interesting, and I would probably fall for offers for vintage style merchandise, and maybe feel more like it is a brand I can trust because of that - but in the big scheme of things it's not very important.

  8. I'm not sure that it would come up in conversation, but if so I would be happy to say I'd used it and was pleased with the result, rather than it being intrinsically better than another block butter. I'd also say how lovely it was that you were doing this promotion and encouraging baking in schools.
