Hedrin Once Spray Gel - feedback thread NOW CLOSED

This thread is for the MNers who have recently experienced head lice in the family and have tried Hedrin Once Spray Gel to blast those little critters!

Here's what Hedrin have to say about their product, "head lice remedies have traditionally required a second application to kill lice that have hatched since the original treatment - where they were protected in the egg. Hedrin Once Spray Gel has been shown, in a clinical trial, to eradicate the infestation of live lice and the un-hatched eggs with a single application. This removes the need for repeat treatments and laborious combing, making the process of managing head lice easier than ever before.

"Hedrin Once Spray Gel is a silicone-based, skin-friendly non-pesticide formula that is pleasant for children and easy for parents to use. The active ingredient, dimeticone, kills lice by blocking the opening to their air tubes and disrupting their ability to manage water. Its physical method of killing head lice prevents them developing a resistance – a common problem with traditional pesticide treatments. Available in Boots and pharmacies nationwide, Hedrin Once is available in a liquid or spray gel format priced from £7.14 for 60ml".

So if you're a tester we'd like you to add feedback to this thread and complete the survey which we emailed to you.

Please note your comments may be used by Hedrin in marketing material, on their website and possibly elsewhere.

  1. Who in your family is being treated for head lice? Please include gender and age
  2. Is this the first time they've had head lice? If no, how many times have they had head lice?
  3. How did you find the application process for the Hedrin Once Spray Gel? How long did it take to apply and use the spray gel?
  4. How did Hedrin Once Spray Gel compare to other treatments you've used in the past?
  5. (if you used it on your child) Did your child like the gel? Please say what they thought
  6. How effective has this product been?
  7. Would you use this product again if you or your child had headlice?

All selected testers who add their feedback on this thread and complete the survey form will be entered into a prize draw where one MNer will win a £200 John Lewis voucher.

Thanks and good luck (with everything Grin)

Tested on my 10 year old DD and 7 year old DS.
This was the first time DS had lice but DD has had them several times.
The gel spray was extremely easy to use, there was easily enough to saturate DD's very long hair and DS's shortish hair.
They didn't complain at the process and there was no hideous smell.
Even with putting shampoo straight onto their hair, it was difficult to wash out and took a couple of applications of shampoo to get rid of the greasy feeling.
It was, however, very effective. So far, there have been no further outbreaks.
I would use the product again!

  1. Who in your family is being treated for head lice? Please include gender and age

DS (7)
DD (4)

  1. Is this the first time they've had head lice? If no, how many times have they had head lice?

They had them a couple of months ago too, for the first time.

  1. How did you find the application process for the Hedrin Once Spray Gel? How long did it take to apply and use the spray gel?

It was fairly easy to apply, you need loads for long thick hair though as all of the hair must be coated. It only took minutes.

  1. How did Hedrin Once Spray Gel compare to other treatments you've used in the past?

I've only ever used Hedrin.

  1. (if you used it on your child) Did your child like the gel? Please say what they thought

They were fine with it, even though one has sensory issues and hates hair washing generally. Hedrin has no scent, doesn't sting, and feels soft going on.
And they hated the idea of 'hair bugs' so were happy to do whatever it took. Grin

  1. How effective has this product been?

Fantastically effective. It seemed to work after just one application. I bought more and did another application a week later, just to be safe, but I don't think it was necessary
.

  1. Would you use this product again if you or your child had headlice?

Yes, without a doubt.

DS Aged 4

We have been fighting the battle since February! Each time we thought we had it sorted they reappeared!

Application was really easy. We applied whilst LO was watching tv before bath time then left it on as directed then followed shampooing instructions once in the bath. The spray gun applicator was much better than the other brands in applying the product too.

Hedrin is by far the best product we have used (and we have bought a few!) It has certainly got rid of them. DS didn't seem to mind it too much, but then he has been subjected to quite a few treatments over the past couple of months. We have recently gone back to school so will be interesting to see if they return or if it was the previous treatments we were using that failed to completely eradicate the headlice.

Without doubt I would recommend Hedrin and use it again. I will certainly buy this product if we needed treating again in the future. Although it was quite greasy and it took a couple of washes to really get the hair back to normal in the long run this is no big deal as give me greasy hair over headlice any day of the week!

Definitely 5*'s from this household. Bye bye headlice

themonstersmum · 25/04/2015 22:20

This works! Amazingly! My kids have had headline almost continuously for a year. We take the nit comb on holiday with us, so usual is it for one if them to start scratching. I had not used Hedrin as I thought it was a bit expensive frankly, but having had a sample and used it, it is the only thing that seems to have worked. All three have been back at school for two weeks now and no headlice. I have spent a fortune on treatments in the last year for the little beggars to return after a week. This time my foe appears to have been vanquished! Hurrah!

  1. Who in your family is being treated for head lice? Please include gender and age

Daughter aged 5, Daughter aged 12

  1. Is this the first time they've had head lice? If no, how many times have they had head lice?

Quite a few times, I cannot be more specific.

  1. How did you find the application process for the Hedrin Once Spray Gel? How long did it take to apply and use the spray gel?

Easy to use.

  1. How did Hedrin Once Spray Gel compare to other treatments you've used in the past?

Possibly slightly easier to use, in terms of applying it. But quite difficult to wash out. It left the hair a bit greasy.

  1. (if you used it on your child) Did your child like the gel? Please say what they thought

They did not moan particularly about it, they were quite happy to have the treatment done. The older of the two complained about having greasy hair afterwards.

  1. How effective has this product been?

It does seem to have been effective. I must say I was quite surprised that my 5 year old was nit free at the last check. My 12 year old has not let me check but says she checked herself and she is clear. I will try and get her to let me check properly when she is back from her school trip. She has long hair and has had nits several times so I will be very suspicious until I've done it myself.

  1. Would you use this product again if you or your child had headlice?

Yes, it does seem have been helpful. So I would use again.

nerysw · 27/04/2015 14:26

I tested my daughter who's 6 and she's had them before (once at nursery and once at preschool).
The spray was easy to apply and I prefer having a spray than other bottle types I've used before.
My child didn't particularly like having it done but this wasn't down to the product, just the fact that she was unimpressed at having caught 'The NITS' as she put it.
It's worked which is the important thing and I'd be happy to use this again.

  1. Who in your family is being treated for head lice? Please include gender and age
My Son age 8 and Step-son age 13.
  1. Is this the first time they've had head lice? If no, how many times have they had head lice?
They have had headlice a few times before.
  1. How did you find the application process for the Hedrin Once Spray Gel? How long did it take to apply and use the spray gel?
Very easy to apply and took a few minutes as they both have very short hair.
  1. How did Hedrin Once Spray Gel compare to other treatments you've used in the past?
Very quick and easy to apply. Doesn't seem to drip as much as some other brands.
  1. (if you used it on your child) Did your child like the gel? Please say what they thought
My youngest does not like to sit still long enough to get all the lotion on usually but it was on his head before he had time to complain too much.
  1. How effective has this product been?
Seems very effective, no visible lice, no itching.
  1. Would you use this product again if you or your child had headlice?
Yes I would use it again.

  1. Who in your family is being treated for head lice? Please include gender and age.
My daughter, 2. Step sons, 6 & 12.
  1. Is this the first time they've had head lice? If no, how many times have they had head lice?
My daughter, yes. My step sons, no. They have had once before.
  1. How did you find the application process for the Hedrin Once Spray Gel? How long did it take to apply and use the spray gel?
Really easy, took around half an hour but that's mostly due to being really thorough.
  1. How did Hedrin Once Spray Gel compare to other treatments you've used in the past?
Spray made things much easier & faster. Washing out was more tricky but not so bad that it put me off.
  1. (if you used it on your child) Did your child like the gel? Please say what they thought
They had no strong feelings about it, must be ok if there were no complaints.
  1. How effective has this product been?
Very. No more lice. (coupled with lots of combing)
  1. Would you use this product again if you or your child had headlice?
Absolutely. No doubt.
JugglingAct123 · 28/04/2015 15:23

I was treating my 2 year old daughter and she had suffered with headlice on and off for months. I would say she had a case of headlice one week out of every month for the last 8 months.

The product was very easy to apply.

It was much easier and much more effective than other products I have used.

I would definitely use this product again.

SoThisisMe · 28/04/2015 16:10

I treated my 7 year old daughter who has had head lice several times. We normally treat through regular wet combing but with long thick hair we were both fed up.

I was very pleased with both the easy application and the results. She didnt would mind the gel at all. I would definitely use again and have already recommended to friends.

Scootergrrrl · 28/04/2015 16:17

DD, who is 11, and DS, who is five, were our current infestees who were treated with the Hedrin. They've both had it a couple of times but I think we are either not completely clearing the eggs when treating them with other things, or they are being reinfected in their classes at school. The gel is much easier to use than liquids we have tried in the past, and much more effective than wet combing as, touch wood, we haven't seen any headlice since applying it. The children didn't mind it too much, as the bit they hate about the liquid treatments is that it's cold and drips down their necks! They definitely needed another shampoo after the first time we completed the cycle of use, but that's fairly standard for headlice treatments. I'd definitely buy this again.

TopGearBird · 28/04/2015 16:52

I hate nits, when they arrive they dominate the house for the next week.
Liked the gel, worked in the short term - I'd like to do the rest of the school.

Please make the leaflet and box instructions large, easy to read, foolproof. I know you have to include the small print but make the timetable, application, rinsing stuff really clear so that I can look at it whilst trying to get a brush through DDs hair. I've used so many potions over the years - it neddsto be clear.

  1. Who in your family is being treated for head lice? Please include gender and age EVERYONE, unfortunately. DD aged 5 yrs is the worst for gettin nits and has been resistant to everything we have tried. DD aged 9 yrs, DS aged 12 yrs, me aged 45 and DH aged 44. Surprised the cats havent got them too, tbh.
  2. Is this the first time they've had head lice? If no, how many times have they had head lice? Despite regular (weekly or more) combing and trying every treatment on the market, our 3 children have them pretty much constantly, especially the youngest. It drive us nuts!
  3. How did you find the application process for the Hedrin Once Spray Gel? How long did it take to apply and use the spray gel? A bit messy but OK if you get well towelled up on the shoulders.

Me (39), DS1 (7), DS2 (4)
  1. Is this the first time they've had head lice? If no, how many times have they had head lice?
I wish! Several bouts over the years; especially recurrent this year.
  1. How did you find the application process for the Hedrin Once Spray Gel? How long did it take to apply and use the spray gel?
For the boys, who have short hair, not too bad - a few minutes total.

For me - shoulder length, VERY thick hair - it was a bloody nightmare. Took ages, best part of two bottles and I nearly got RSI from pulling the trigger.

I should say that having used it before and tried to wash out without putting shampoo on first, that is excellent advice and works well.

  1. How did Hedrin Once Spray Gel compare to other treatments you've used in the past?
Well, it didn't smell and it worked fine on the boys, but it didn't work on me! I've just spent an hour combing and re-treating my hair, and I had quite the infestation. And I haven't been near enough to anyone but DH and the DCs (who don't have them) to have caught them again.
  1. (if you used it on your child) Did your child like the gel? Please say what they thought
They weren't bothered at all.
  1. How effective has this product been?
DCs - good. Me - ineffective.
  1. Would you use this product again if you or your child had headlice?
No, sadly. I'd use the Hedrin Treat and Go overnight one for the boys, and prob something like Lyclear (if it works; just tried it tonight) for me.
YellowTangerine · 29/04/2015 09:42

I used the product on my daughter who is 3 years old. She had them but I also did my own and my partners. My daughter has had them so many times I've lost count. One of her beat friends has them and never seems to get rid of them.
I found this product really easy to apply which I was surprised by. It was easy to cover her whole hair whilst she insisted on dancing!
My daughter seemed very happy to have it applied whereas others she has said the smell is horrible but she didn't comment with this one.
I have just checked her hair again now and I found one dead lice. Overall this appears to have worked excellently.
I will be using this again and have actually ordered some already in preparation for her next lot!
Thank you for the opportunity to try this Product as it is something that is essential in our house!

  1. Dd age 9 and dd age 7.
  2. Both girls have had headlice repeatedly since summer 2013.
  3. It was ok to apply. Dd1 has thick, long ringlets so hers took about 20 mins.
  4. Easier to apply than liquids.
  5. No complaints at the time, but both girls complained of greasy hair the next day...
  6. 2 weeks later, no lice still...
  7. Yes but I would wash it off more thoroughly to prevent the greasy-haired effect the next day.

Son age 4 and myself,female age 42.
1st time for son but not for me.
Application was really easy. I read reviews saying it's not very easy to wash out but we did the 1st dry shampoo, washed it out then applied more shampoo and that worked brilliantly.
Much better than others as it was so easy to use and didn't smell bad!
Son was fine with the gel.
Really effective, haven't needed another treatment.
Would use again and highly recommend to others. Have already told other mums in the playground about it.
