Hedrin Once Spray Gel - feedback thread NOW CLOSED

This thread is for the MNers who have recently experienced head lice in the family and have tried Hedrin Once Spray Gel to blast those little critters!

Here's what Hedrin have to say about their product, "head lice remedies have traditionally required a second application to kill lice that have hatched since the original treatment - where they were protected in the egg. Hedrin Once Spray Gel has been shown, in a clinical trial, to eradicate the infestation of live lice and the un-hatched eggs with a single application. This removes the need for repeat treatments and laborious combing, making the process of managing head lice easier than ever before.

"Hedrin Once Spray Gel is a silicone-based, skin-friendly non-pesticide formula that is pleasant for children and easy for parents to use. The active ingredient, dimeticone, kills lice by blocking the opening to their air tubes and disrupting their ability to manage water. Its physical method of killing head lice prevents them developing a resistance – a common problem with traditional pesticide treatments. Available in Boots and pharmacies nationwide, Hedrin Once is available in a liquid or spray gel format priced from £7.14 for 60ml".

So if you're a tester we'd like you to add feedback to this thread and complete the survey which we emailed to you.

Please note your comments may be used by Hedrin in marketing material, on their website and possibly elsewhere.

  1. Who in your family is being treated for head lice? Please include gender and age
  2. Is this the first time they've had head lice? If no, how many times have they had head lice?
  3. How did you find the application process for the Hedrin Once Spray Gel? How long did it take to apply and use the spray gel?
  4. How did Hedrin Once Spray Gel compare to other treatments you've used in the past?
  5. (if you used it on your child) Did your child like the gel? Please say what they thought
  6. How effective has this product been?
  7. Would you use this product again if you or your child had headlice?

All selected testers who add their feedback on this thread and complete the survey form will be entered into a prize draw where one MNer will win a £200 John Lewis voucher.

Thanks and good luck (with everything Grin)

DD2 and myself . Dd is 7 and I am 37, both female. we have both had headlice before, many times. I thought it was easy to apply, took 5 minutes spraying and 20 minutes waiting and washing off, all done in the bath. No complaints about smell which is a bonus but still very greasy but that's to be expected. Dd liked the fact there was no combing, we have used lots of different products including wet combing but I will run a nitty gritty through her hair tomorrow to see if it has worked. she is no longer itchybrid though. I am clear. It was difficult to wash out and will need a second wash tomorrow but no different to other products. I also had to use one and half bottles on dd2 thick long hair in order to cover it all, so could prove expensive in the long run.

I will probably recommend to others, however if your like me with a large famile it gets expensive, so for myself I would probably stick to wet combing if more than two are affected.

Thank you for the chance to try this though, it is a good product

  1. Who in your family is being treated for head lice? Please include gender and age
DD age 10years.
  1. Is this the first time they've had head lice? If no, how many times have they had head lice?
Yes its our first time with lice :(
  1. How did you find the application process for the Hedrin Once Spray Gel? How long did it take to apply and use the spray gel?
I loved that it was easy to spray onto her long hair.
  1. How did Hedrin Once Spray Gel compare to other treatments you've used in the past?
We had never had lice before so this was our first product that we had any experience with.
  1. (if you used it on your child) Did your child like the gel? Please say what they thought
No negative comments at all, she just to get rid of them asap.
  1. How effective has this product been?
It has not worked at all :( DD has what /I assume are the eggs and its as if they are glued to her hair. The Hedrin didn't work on Wednesday when we used it so now I have wet combed twice and that has removed some of them. I really am not sure how to manage this and need to research some more.
  1. Would you use this product again if you or your child had headlice?
Not at the moment. We were so hopeful when we used it that they would be gone easily but I could still see them as I rinsed her hair.

  1. Who in your family is being treated for head lice? Please include gender and age.
DD1 - Girl aged 7.
  1. Is this the first time they've had head lice? If no, how many times have they had head lice?
No the second. She first had it when she was 5.
  1. How did you find the application process for the Hedrin Once Spray Gel? How long did it take to apply and use the spray gel?
Took about 5-10minutes just to make sure all the hair was covered (she has really long hair) but the spray definitely made that easier.
  1. How did Hedrin Once Spray Gel compare to other treatments you've used in the past?
A lot better because it only takes 15 minutes. The stuff you leave on over night/8 hours is a nightmare. They cant go to school with it on as it is super greasy and looks disgusting and if you leave it overnight there bedding needs changed again and its just annoying. This is really quick and easy.
  1. (if you used it on your child) Did your child like the gel? Please say what they thought.
She likes that she didn't have to leave it on for long.
  1. How effective has this product been?
It did the job! So very.
  1. Would you use this product again if you or your child had headlice?
If I needed something quick then yes, however living in Scotland we can get treatment free on Minor Ailments so I would rather that then pay £7.
SoonToBeSix · 11/04/2015 12:35

  1. Is this the first time they've had head lice? If no, how many times have they had head lice?
Countless times, my eldest always brings them home from school with him
  1. How did you find the application process for the Hedrin Once Spray Gel? How long did it take to apply and use the spray gel?
Struggled with the bottle at first lol, but application was easy enough, took around 10/15mins to apply
  1. How did Hedrin Once Spray Gel compare to other treatments you've used in the past?
It's quite good, doesn't smell which is a bonus
  1. (if you used it on your child) Did your child like the gel? Please say what they thought
My kids weren't too fussed by it, to them it was just yet another nit treatment lol
  1. How effective has this product been?
So far so good. I'll keep on wet combing with the nitty gritty comb to make sure the eggs are completely gone
  1. Would you use this product again if you or your child had head lice?
Yea I'd use it again :)
Justyou · 11/04/2015 23:23

1 dd1 13
2 twice previously
3 mega thick hair so about 20 minutes
4 impressed with the spray and seemed to coat the hair well
5 very pleased that didn't need overnight treatment - meant could do discreetly without the other dc knowing and teasing
6 very effective I think, have found a couple of empty eggs but no sign of anything living
7 definitely the only negative thing was it took 3 washes to remove even though shampooed twice each time.

JoanCallamezzo · 12/04/2015 12:42

I was on a work trip so left the treatment for DH to do on DD - which he completely forgot to do but did take her for a short haircut Hmm. Anyway, since I've been home I've done a few nit checks and there is no sign of the buggers. Maybe they saw the hedrin package and scarpered.

No doubt they will return when school resumes so I will update when we've used the spray!

  1. Who in your family is being treated for head lice? Please include gender and age

Daughter aged 7.Picked up from school.

  1. Is this the first time they've had head lice? If no, how many times have they had head lice?

No.Had it for a year now on and off.

  1. How did you find the application process for the Hedrin Once Spray Gel? How long did it take to apply and use the spray gel?

The spray gel was so easy to apply. With hair spray,it's always a confusion how much it's enough. However,it was very quick plus no strong smell from it.

  1. How did Hedrin Once Spray Gel compare to other treatments you've used in the past
Have only tried wet combing before and it took a long time to get it out.Hair spray was a quicker method.Though it took two shampooing to get the product out.
  1. (if you used it on your child) Did your child like the gel? Please say what they thought

yes as it was quicker than wet combing.

  1. How effective has this product been?
I had a look at her hair thoroughly after the shampooing as I wasn't sure whether it would work.I didn't find any nits or eggs but will have to check again in a few days to see whether it really work.
  1. Would you use this product again if you or your child had head lice?

I would if it really remove all of the eggs which I will find out in few days.If it doesn't,and I will have to apply it time and again,I will go back to wet combing due to the cost. However,if I have a young toddler, they may be more fussy on wet combing,so I would use the hair spray instead for quicker treatment.

Thank you for allowing me to review this product.

My children, 2 girls, 9 and 13
  1. Is this the first time they've had head lice? If no, how many times have they had head lice?
This is not the first time, they've had nits on several occasions, and with my younger daughter, despite constant combing and treatments always seems to have 1 or 2 nits.
  1. How did you find the application process for the Hedrin Once Spray Gel? How long did it take to apply and use the spray gel?
Very quick and easy, took a couple of minutes
  1. How did Hedrin Once Spray Gel compare to other treatments you've used in the past?
Very easy, and very pleased that I don't have to remember to repeat the process in a few days. Although it's quite difficult to wash out!
  1. (if you used it on your child) Did your child like the gel? Please say what they thought
Yes, youngest child usually hates these treatments but on this occasion it was quick and easy and we had no complaints
  1. How effective has this product been?
So far, so good

  2. Is this the first time they've had head lice? If no, how many times have they had head lice? No they have had them repeatedly over the last 2 years
  3. How did you find the application process for the Hedrin Once Spray Gel? Easy to apply and caused less fuss than other treatments
How long did it take to apply and use the spray gel? about 10 mins per child
  1. How did Hedrin Once Spray Gel compare to other treatments you've used in the past? it was quicker and easier. It's very tricky to get out of their after takes several washes
  2. (if you used it on your child) Did your child like the gel? Please say what they thought they were happier with this than they have been with some other treatments
  3. How effective has this product been? Not very I treated them on 08/04/2015. I took them to the hairdresser on 09/04/2015 and he commented that he could see some live eggs in their hair so I combed through their hair with the nit comb to remove the eggs. On 12/04/2015 I found more live lice in their hair
  4. Would you use this product again if you or your child had headlice? No as it doesn't seem to be any more effective than combing alone.

  1. Ds1 - 6 ds2 - 3
  1. No. Ds1 seems to be a headlice magnet (or he has a close friend at school who is never treated) and has had it at least 4 times previously.
  1. The application was a doddle. The gel went on well and there was very little wastage/dripping due to the spray bottle.
  1. Previous treatments either haven't worked or have been very laborious and awkward for everyone. Interestingly, I've used the hedrin solution before which didn't work. The nitty gritty comb plus tea tree conditioner had been the most successful until now (although, when ds2 was about 2yo he had a very short haircut and when I took him out in the frosty weather without a hat, all the nits went to the top of his head and I just picked them off like a monkey :) . Now that was Most effective!)
  1. The boys are well practiced now at nit removal and this seems to be the most favourable way for them.
  1. Yes. The nits died quite quickly and I found them on pillows etc and a very dead and flat one in ds1's ear the eggs were also zapped as they have changed colour. I've not used the nit comb yet as I wanted to see what happens to them and they seem to be coming off the hair of their own accord, their grip on the hair shaft seems loosened and are easily picked off. I have done a second treatment two weeks on just to make sure but as yet, no re infestation.
  1. Yes, definitely, although I might not use it every time as I don't want the buggers building up resistance.

Thanks Hedrin.

DD aged 16

  1. Is this the first time they've had head lice? If no, how many times have they had head lice?
Countless times - in fact they never seem to go.
  1. How did you find the application process for the Hedrin Once Spray Gel? How long did it take to apply and use the spray gel?
Absolutely fine and what I'd expect from this sort of treatment. Easy to apply. Our bottle gave more of a direct stream than a spray!
  1. How did Hedrin Once Spray Gel compare to other treatments you've used in the past?
We've tried everything, including Listerine! Less smelly. Takes longer than the zapper comb, but it feels effective as you use it
  1. (if you used it on your child) Did your child like the gel? Please say what they thought
Was very happy to use it - as it was me who was applying, she just wrapped a towel round her shoulders and continued on her phone! Hair took a couple of washes to reduce the greasy residue
  1. How effective has this product been?
Ah here's the crunch... We were hoping and praying that This Would Be The One. It certainly displaced lots and the hair looked much better. But a few days later we saw new nits - very small ones and much fewer, but there nevertheless. So we undertook another treatment, but sadly I'm not convinced it's rid her of them. As a point for your R& D dept - we have never been able to find an actual louse. This despite any comb-throughs and plus use of the electric zapper comb. Why can't I find them?
  1. Would you use this product again if you or your child had headlice?
Yes, it seemed marginally more effective than other treatments
