Hedrin Once Spray Gel - feedback thread NOW CLOSED

AnnMumsnet · 30/03/2015 10:58

This thread is for the MNers who have recently experienced head lice in the family and have tried Hedrin Once Spray Gel to blast those little critters!

Here's what Hedrin have to say about their product, "head lice remedies have traditionally required a second application to kill lice that have hatched since the original treatment - where they were protected in the egg. Hedrin Once Spray Gel has been shown, in a clinical trial, to eradicate the infestation of live lice and the un-hatched eggs with a single application. This removes the need for repeat treatments and laborious combing, making the process of managing head lice easier than ever before.

"Hedrin Once Spray Gel is a silicone-based, skin-friendly non-pesticide formula that is pleasant for children and easy for parents to use. The active ingredient, dimeticone, kills lice by blocking the opening to their air tubes and disrupting their ability to manage water. Its physical method of killing head lice prevents them developing a resistance – a common problem with traditional pesticide treatments. Available in Boots and pharmacies nationwide, Hedrin Once is available in a liquid or spray gel format priced from £7.14 for 60ml".

So if you're a tester we'd like you to add feedback to this thread and complete the survey which we emailed to you.

Please note your comments may be used by Hedrin in marketing material, on their website and possibly elsewhere.

  1. Who in your family is being treated for head lice? Please include gender and age
  2. Is this the first time they've had head lice? If no, how many times have they had head lice?
  3. How did you find the application process for the Hedrin Once Spray Gel? How long did it take to apply and use the spray gel?
  4. How did Hedrin Once Spray Gel compare to other treatments you've used in the past?
  5. (if you used it on your child) Did your child like the gel? Please say what they thought
  6. How effective has this product been?
  7. Would you use this product again if you or your child had headlice?

All selected testers who add their feedback on this thread and complete the survey form will be entered into a prize draw where one MNer will win a £200 John Lewis voucher.

Thanks and good luck (with everything Grin)

  1. Who in your family is being treated for head lice? Please include gender and age
  • Daughter, aged 12
  1. Is this the first time they've had head lice? If no, how many times have they had head lice?
  • Multiple times, far to many to count.
  1. How did you find the application process for the Hedrin Once Spray Gel?
  • Super easy to use. I love the trigger action spay.
How long did it take to apply and use the spray gel?
  • My daughter has quite long hair, so it took a good 10 minutes to section hair, apply and throughly massage in and work to the ends of the hair.
  1. How did Hedrin Once Spray Gel compare to other treatments you've used in the past?
  • Similar to work into the hair, but this is made much easier by the handy trigger spray. Both my daughter & I were sceptical of ever getting this very oily substance out of my daughters long hair... To ensure removal I worked in lots & lots & lots of cheap/own brand shampoo, taking as much time & care as when working in the lice treatment; hey presto it totally washed out leaving squeaky clean, silky hair. My top tip is - be sure to read the instructions which clearly state to work shampoo into hair BEFORE wetting.
  1. (if you used it on your child) Did your child like the gel? Please say what they thought
  • She was worried we'd never wash to gel out and her hair would be left greasy (like previously tired products), but as per my last comment it washed out a treat by using lots of shampoo! She was happy it was unscented.
  1. How effective has this product been?
  • We seem to be lice free!
  1. Would you use this product again if you or your child had headlice?
  • Absolutely.

Delayed reply as hasnt worked (yet!?!). Going for 3rd retreat tonight if my poor trigger finger can take it. Will report back but initial thoughts - not enough in the bottle to treat long/thick hair, the greasiness takes about 5 or 6 washes to come out meanwhilE you look like youve dipped your head in chip fat. Why dont you make a big family sized bottle to do everyone?

  1. How did you find the application process for the Hedrin Once Spray Gel? How long did it take to apply and use the spray gel?

Very easy - did them all at once, in about 5 minutes, pre bath time, then combed it through and showered them off. Too two shampoos to get it out.

  1. How did Hedrin Once Spray Gel compare to other treatments you've used in the past?

Much easier to use, and not stinky!

No. not many maybe 4/5 times

  1. How did you find the application process for the Hedrin Once Spray Gel? How long did it take to apply and use the spray gel?

Fairly easy took about 10 minutes as hair is long but fine, took a good couple of washes to get it all out, followed instructions to the letter.

  1. How did Hedrin Once Spray Gel compare to other treatments you've used in the past?

Easier to use that others and without the horrid chemical smell of other brands I have used in the past.

  1. Did your child like the gel? Please say what they thought

He was fine about it. Said it was quick but didn't like having to have hair washed twice to get it all out.

  1. How effective has this product been?

Will keep combing through but seems to have worked but it wasn't a big infestation or anything.

  1. Would you use this product again if you or your child had headlice?

Yes good if you have missed them early. Ds didn't have any skin reaction so that was a huge bonus.

  1. How did Hedrin Once Spray Gel compare to other treatments you've used in the past? worked very well, killed lice, combed through very easily, was difficult to wash out though

  1. Who in your family is being treated for head lice?
DS - 7 and myself
  1. Is this the first time they've had head lice? If no, how many times have they had head lice?

Yes for DS, no for myself

  1. How did you find the application process for the Hedrin Once Spray Gel? How long did it take to apply and use the spray gel?

I found it very easy to apply to the hair, however I cant say the same for taking it off. It literally took me 2-3 washes with baking soda to take the gel off.

  1. How did Hedrin Once Spray Gel compare to other treatments you've used in the past?

I have to say the ease of application was much better as it was a spray version, but it's not better when washing it off.

  1. (if you used it on your child) Did your child like the gel? Please say what they thought

Do children ever like any sort of treatment? Lol. DS thought it was such a hassle and kept complaining.

  1. How effective has this product been?

It appears to have all gone after 2 weeks for both of us. Now I just need to make sure that DS doesn't have contact with other people that have it.

  1. Would you use this product again if you or your child had headlice?

If the washing off was less hassle then possibly.

Me - 39, dd2 - 9.

  1. Is this the first time they've had head lice? If no, how many times have they had head lice?

No, dd2 about 3-4 times already. Me - my second time since becoming an adult!

  1. How did you find the application process for the Hedrin Once Spray Gel? How long did it take to apply and use the spray gel?

Really easy, application took about 10 mins for both of us. We do have thin hair though.

  1. How did Hedrin Once Spray Gel compare to other treatments you've used in the past?

Great! so easy, no combing through afterwards, quick. No repeat visitors - yet! Never used a treatment that's worked so well.

  1. (if you used it on your child) Did your child like the gel? Please say what they thought

Seemed indifferent. Washing out was a bit of a pain afterwards though as I had to convince dd2 to wash her hair twice in as many days!

  1. How effective has this product been?

Excellent so far.

  1. Would you use this product again if you or your child had headlice?

Without a doubt, yes.

Indifferent to gel but not to happy to have to wash her hair for a second time next day as so greasy looking! We live in a hard water area so probably even harder to lather up the shampoo.

  1. How effective has this product been?

Great - no repeat visitors - yet! Been two weeks.

I used this a couple of weeks ago now, and actually wanted to use it on myself and DD but by the time it turned up I'd started wet combing on DD's hair and got the live ones out so just used it on myself.

  1. Who in your family is being treated for head lice? Please include gender and age
Me, female, 35
  1. Is this the first time they've had head lice? If no, how many times have they had head lice?
First time
  1. How did you find the application process for the Hedrin Once Spray Gel? How long did it take to apply and use the spray gel?
I found it slightly tricky to apply, but only because I was using it on myself and I've got quite thick hair so had to use quite a bit of it to make sure I'd completely covered my hair. It took a lot of shampoo and washing to get it out, my natural/eco friendly shampoo didn't touch it and I had to use DH's.
  1. How did Hedrin Once Spray Gel compare to other treatments you've used in the past?

  1. How effective has this product been?
It got rid of them all, I didn't use it again a week later but wet combed my hair and didn't find anything.
  1. Would you use this product again if you or your child had headlice?
I would definitely use it on myself, as wet combing is difficult as I've got longish thick hair. However, wet combing was very effective on my DD's hair and is cheaper (!) so I don't know if I'd use it on the children, especially as toddler DS hates having his hair washed so getting it out of his hair would be a real chore.

  1. Who in your family is being treated for head lice? Dd(1), Ds(4) and me
  2. Is this the first time they've had head lice? If no, how many times have they had head lice? This was Dd's first time with them, Ds has had them on and off a few times since September and I haven't had them since I was a child
  3. How did you find the application process for the Hedrin Once Spray Gel? How long did it take to apply and use the spray gel? The application was very easy took no time at all to comb it through
  4. How did Hedrin Once Spray Gel compare to other treatments you've used in the past? We have only wet combed previously this was just as easy
  5. (if you used it on your child) Did your child like the gel? Neither child was at all bothered by the gel and just played as usual until it came time to wash it out
  6. How effective has this product been? Fantastic, very effective, no need for any extra treatments, all the lice and eggs were killed in the one application
  7. Would you use this product again if you or your child had headlice? Even though it is slightly expensive, yes, most definitely
SocksRock · 15/04/2015 20:23

I treated myself and my DD, aged 7, and DS aged 5. We have all had live multiple times since September.

It was easy to apply and comb through, neither child complained at all. I winged at my mother, who helped me do my hair, but she told me to act my age (37) and shut up. We are all used to wet combing though, not much difference there.

In terms of washing it out, I needed three goes each, but we all have pretty thick hair. Again, I did winge quite a lot but neither child was particularly bothered.

Was great not having to remember to reapply, and two weeks down the line we appear to still be live free. I'm sure this will not last, sadly...

All in all, was a good product and I would probably buy in place of the regular Hedrin. However, I am a big fan of the mousse stuff, purely because it is easier to wash out.

Me, age late 20's. I thought dd had them as she was itching too but I couldn't find any in the end... Thankfully!
  1. Is this the first time they've had head lice? If no, how many times have they had head lice?
I've had lice 4-5 times in my life I think
  1. How did you find the application process for the Hedrin Once Spray Gel? How long did it take to apply and use the spray gel?
Took about 5-10 mins to apply as I have lots if hair. I found it pretty easy to apply,
  1. How did Hedrin Once Spray Gel compare to other treatments you've used in the past?
It's the best one I have used as it didn't smell awful like some other ones.
  1. (if you used it on your child) Did your child like the gel? Please say what they thought I didn't use it on her in the end.
  1. How effective has this product been?
Perfect, it treated my hair really well. I was worried that I hadn't got enough on my hair, but it appears as it worked that I did.

Yes

  1. How did you find the application process for the Hedrin Once Spray Gel? How long did it take to apply and use the spray gel? About 10 mins for me, 205 mins for dd, but only because I was really thorough (I wanted to make sure I didn't miss anything)
  1. How did Hedrin Once Spray Gel compare to other treatments you've used in the past? Much easier that the stuff my dm used on me as a child. Every night for about a week iirc
  1. (if you used it on your child) Did your child like the gel? Please say what they thought She didn't really express anything other than she wanted me to get the bugs out of her hair thanks mil. She certainly wasn't bothered by it though, and was fine about the feel and smell of it
  1. How effective has this product been? 100% I am very relieved to say
  1. Would you use this product again if you or your child had headlice? Yes, absolutely, I wouldn't hesitate.
halestone · 17/04/2015 14:20

1, My DsD 10, my Dd 2 and myself (f) 31.

2, No my DsD has had them pretty consistantly since before christmas and is treated every weekend by myself. 2nd time for my Dd and 1st time since childhood for me Sad

3, I found the application process really easy. My Dd took a couple of minutes for application. My DsD took about 10 minutes and I took about the same amount of time.

4, To be honest I found it about the same as other treatments to use. I did find it ran down my Dds head into her eyes though and no amount of rubbing seemed to stop this. This did not happen to myself or DsD though.

5, DsD wasn't bothered by it and didn't comment at all about the gel. Dd was hugely bothered by it running into her eyes.

6, At the minute it seems to have worked but I will be interested to see if DsD has nits again next weekend.

7, I would use this product again on me and DsD, as it was easy, the only thing that would put me off is the amount of time it took to wash out. But I always use the washing out process to go through it again with the nit comb. I wouldn't however use this product again on my Dd.

startwig1982 · 18/04/2015 22:56

Finally used the stuff!
Ds is 3.10 and this is the first time we've had headlice. Fortunately he hasn't minded having stuff put on and having his hair combed, although putting it on was a bit of a faff having to do the shampoo first. The only real difficulty was getting it out and we shampooed twice to make sure it had gone. We also combed just to make sure we'd got it all. The lice that I saw were all dead and I suppose the proof is in the pudding as to whether any eggs survived. I'd recommend it as long as it works!

xxtracy09xx · 19/04/2015 10:08

make sure you treat your own hair impossible to get out found out.
had headrin lots cant remember how much. stuck in my hair.
The only way get them out conditioner nit comb. do it every day and all kids every one in the house change bedding. mine were playing xbox in my bed now I cringe. check when there gone get white bits still glued in there head. lovely schools. nothing to do with how you wash how clean you are...

Treated myself and DD (13) who has long hair and nits since Xmas.

  1. Is this the first time they've had head lice? If no, how many times have they had head lice?

First time for ages but struggling to get rid og them. Daily combing, loads of conditioner gets them out, but keep coming back.

  1. How did you find the application process for the Hedrin Once Spray Gel? How long did it take to apply and use the spray gel?

easy to use (did manage to get it on the bedroom wall through...). Used two bottles as she has long hair and its thick.

  1. How did Hedrin Once Spray Gel compare to other treatments you've used in the past?

Better than lotions as a gel, so not running down her face and neck.

  1. (if you used it on your child) Did your child like the gel? Please say what they thought

No issues - no smell, short time to be on hair. Not so easy to wash out, but did follow the shampoo before water instruciton. Took two washes to get it out and made the bath slippy

  1. How effective has this product been?

Seems to have worked - need to check as been 10 days since used it.

  1. Would you use this product again if you or your child had headlice?

I already have a bottle in the cupboard in case!

  1. Who in your family is being treated for head lice? Please include gender and age

Myself (female, late 30s) and my two year old daughter

  1. Is this the first time they've had head lice? If no, how many times have they had head lice?

Yes, I think my son brought it home from school. We got rid of his really easily but have found dealing with ours more dificult.

  1. How did you find the application process for the Hedrin Once Spray Gel? How long did it take to apply and use the spray gel?

It was quick and easy to apply, it probably took around fifteen minutes to apply it for both of us.

  1. How did Hedrin Once Spray Gel compare to other treatments you've used in the past?
It was quite different. It worked which is the major difference, both of us have been clear since we used the treatment. I did find it more difficult to wash off and it was two full hair washes before our hair returned to normal. We followed the instructions to apply shampoo before the water but still had greasy hair until we washed it again.
  1. (if you used it on your child) Did your child like the gel? Please say what they thought

My daughter is only two. She has hated having nits so has been completely fed up by the treatments we have used. She didn't like having the Hedrin on but she hasn't liked anything we have used.

  1. How effective has this product been?
Very effective. I'm currently pregnant and this is suitable for use in pregnancy which was a huge bonus. Neither me or my daughter have had any signs of headlice since we used it. It's been brilliant.
  1. Would you use this product again if you or your child had headlice?
Yes, absolutely. I've used a number of products this time but this one is worth paying more for. It will be my 'go to' product if we have another infestation in future. I would heartily recommend it.

  1. Who in your family is being treated for head lice? Please include gender and age
Two DC: DS 6yrs and DD 3yrs
  1. Is this the first time they've had head lice? If no, how many times have they had head lice?
First time for both
  1. How did you find the application process for the Hedrin Once Spray Gel? How long did it take to apply and use the spray gel?
Simple to spray on and massage through, though I found it easier to dispense the gel into my hand and then massage into their hair. I would say that it took about 5-6 minutes per child as both have short hair. It took 2 washes to completely remove from their hair, and I needed a lot of shampoo and rubbing to do this. But their hair was left shiny and looking in good condition afterwards.
  1. How did Hedrin Once Spray Gel compare to other treatments you've used in the past?
We’ve not had lice before so unable to comment fully, though we do thoroughly wet comb if an alert comes out from school. It is somewhat hard to remove the gel once it has been left on the hair.
  1. (if you used it on your child) Did your child like the gel? Please say what they thought
Neither are particularly enthusiastic about hair washing at the best of times, so it was never going to be warmly welcomed, but I was surprised that the complaints were no different to usual! The lack of any strong smell is a bonus too.
  1. How effective has this product been?
Very effective – seems to have worked first time, which surprised me.
  1. Would you use this product again if you or your child had headlice?
Probably yes.
