Microsoft have asked us to find 10 Mumsnetters to test out Nokia Lumia 735, Xbox One Console with Kinect and a Linx tablet (total RRP ~£750).

Here’s what Microsoft’s marketing manager says, “As a marketing manager for Microsoft and mum of 2 boys, I know that things at home and at work can get pretty busy – especially this time of year with present buying, decorating the house, nativity play outfits, pantomimes……you know the rest :-). That is why we wanted to show you the collective power of some of these Microsoft products and how they can be used for the whole family. We would like to find families that can try out a Nokia Lumia phone, XBox One console and one of the new very affordable Linx tablets. All of these work together in a way that your family’s life can be fun and organised, productive and producing lots of laughs.”

This product test is open to UK Mumsnetters who have at least two children age between 5-15.

Testers will need to be available to attend an event in Victoria, London on Tuesday 16th December between 10-12:30 to learn how to get most out of all the products and how to use them together.

Testers will each receive:

  • Nokia Lumia 735
  • Xbox One Console with Kinect + 12 month Xbox Live subscription + Project Spark game
  • Linx tablet (7 will receive the 8" tablet and and 3 testers will receive the 10" tablet)

Testers will be required to add their feedback on the products on three separate feedback threads onsite. So long as you add feedback as required you will be able to keep the products.

Thanks and good luck

What a shame, automatically excluding those not in London, as most with children cannot even travel for it due to school run! I would have loved to sign up for this.

Well you're not excluded. I have put in for it and I live in Cheshire!

I will make arrangements for a friend or relative to sort DC out.

"All of these work together in a way that your family’s life can be fun and organised, productive and producing lots of laughs."

But only if you can come to London while we show you how they work...um, is that not almost the exact opposite of what products like that are supposed to enable you to do? Rofl.

I'm not eligible anyway because my eldest is too old, but, that's just made me genuinely lol a bit that you have to go see them work to be able to use them Grin

Is that not terrible marketing? So hard to work that we can't let you online with them until we show you how to use them...

(Is on her iphone, which she manages to use fine and connect to other devices without travelling the length of the country to see it demonstrated)

This would be amazing for my DCs, three of them are in the age range. Its a shame I'm in Yorkshire and its too expensive to get the train to London even if I could get the school run covered.

Surely it would be possible to show testers how to use the products online. Or better yet, send them out and let testers figure it out for themselves, this would also test the accessibility of the products to the average consumer, or is Microsoft going to have tutorial days for everyone who buys one of these products?

There have been a few product tests that rule out a huge chunk of MNers as they involve getting to London which isn't easy with school age DCs if you don't have childcare. It can also be prohibitively expensive for many if they have to rely on public transport.

Argh! we would love this! have a 4 and a half year old and a nephew who is nearly 15 does that count (my DH is also a big kid!)? [wishful thinking!]

StripedOss · 04/12/2014 23:34

why do we need to be shown? funnily enough most of us are intelligent enough to be able to work out how to link them without needing to attend an event to show us how.

Microsoft you have seriously gone down in my estimation. I have bought both an X Box One (+ Kinect) and a Lynx tablet as Christmas presents this year and a Lumia is on ds2's list still. I was pleased with my purchases although now not so much. Would it really be so hard to choose a more central part of the UK for such a gathering. Is there any wonder people feel resentful of London residents when they can't possibly be expected to travel but everyone else is! This is a country which is varied in its economic diversity but are people outside London disregarded so easily big business because there are many former Microsoft customers who are currently smarting at this attitude.

Timely there's actually nobody that can care for my 8yo with disabilities and my 5yo with SNs, and nobody that can transport them to school or pick them up. So yes, actually, I am excluded, due to my location (and circumstances). As are a number of people, perhaps such as lone parents, who may be quite happy to test the products, but cannot make the trip into London due to child care issues.

So yes, it's a bit disappointing for myself, as well as (I imagine) a number of others. Some of us have mentioned it because we feel it's something that perhaps these companies should keep in mind, as they limit the number of potential testers available to them by doing this. (Not to mention we're a bit Hmm at having to be "shown" how to use it in a meeting)

Echoing pp's, we're a perfect fit for the test requirements except we live in Devon. Very disappointed not to be eligible to enter. Looks fantastic otherwise.

Alice the showing us how to use it will be purely an opportunity for them to film/photograph the proceedings for their marketing and PR. The form asks whether participants will be willing to be filmed.

It's an exercise in PR.

No, on rereading it doesn't say dc are needed. But, as it's about interconnectivity between dc/family/tech, and havi g appropriate dc is a requirement, I would assume that they are relevant to the event as well.

I'm a perfect fit but can't go, anyway, with or without dc, as I'll be too busy parenting said dc in RL - ie watching dc3's school show.
