So here's your chance to join in the celebration, try our breakfast menu with your family let us know what you think!"

What was the best part about your experience?
How about service: was it friendly and welcoming?

  1. We thought that it was a lovely place to visit with our two girls. It was clean, friendly, the food was pretty decent and it was not at all busy, basically exactly what we look for at the moment!
  2. For a fry up, which is what we all opted for, it was fine. You can't go too wring with that sort of food though, can you?
  3. We felt that the children's menu was limited but our little girl enjoyed her cooked breakfast nonetheless.
  4. Probably the best aspect was being able to take the children somewhere a bit different to where we normally go. My daughter (aged 2) thought it was really exciting so that was lovely.
  5. We felt that the service was friendly and we didn't feel rushed during our visit. I didn't know that Bella Italia did breakfast prior to this. I would return occasionally for breakfast there. It will definitely be added to our list of child friendly places to eat nearby.

Thank you for choosing me to take part :)

Generally - how did you find Bella as a place to visit with the family for breakfast?

DS (9) and I went to the Edinburgh, Hanover Street Branch, at 12.30 on Sunday 23 November.

The restaurant was busy and buzzing with a lovely atmosphere when we arrived. I was glad that we had booked a table.

We were greeted and offered a choice of table - I choose to go upstairs as it was very busy downstairs. The date was the day of the "Edinburgh Christmas" launch so town was very busy - so I would expect that Bella Italia would be busier than usual due to its central location.

The waiter was very friendly and welcoming. He called me "Ma'am" which I found amusing!

How would you rate the food quality?

The food was pleasant, although the portion was too small for DS and he eats like a bird. I would say that the portion was a toddler size rather than being suitable for up to ten year olds!

How would you rate the selection of food – grown ups and kids - what did you and your DC choose?

I choose the mozzarella, avocado and tomato toasted ciabatta sandwich. It was a good size portion - I would have preferred a wee salad garnish on the side in terms of presentation.

I happily ate it but the avocado was black - most people would not serve it like that! I would not serve an avocado like that at home so I was surprised that a restaurant would. There was avocado in other items so I would have thought they would have a good stock of avocado in the kitchen so would not need to serve black avocado!

DS chose the pancake face. As there were only two items it was not much of a choice though. I would not consider it to be a "children's menu" as there are only two items available. I did not realise that DS could have chosen from the adult section. If I had known this then he would probably have had something more substantial from the adult section.

What he has was teeny - a scotch pancake sized pancake, with two slices of banana, a sliver of strawberry, a couple of mini fudge chunks and a smear of melted chocolate. This portion would perhaps feed a toddler or would be suitable as a dessert but it was not enough for a child.

DS does not eat much and it was not enough for him. He had already had breakfast that day (up at 6.30 am for a bowl of cereal then had a pain au chocolate at the cinema at 10.30) and he was still hungry after the pancake. The waiter did offer dessert but I felt that the pancake was a dessert so declined.

What was the best part about your experience?

DS liked the place - he liked the pancake face and wants to go back for pizza.

How about service: was it friendly and welcoming?

The service was great - very friendly and welcoming.

Did you know Bella did breakfast prior to this?

no
And lastly, would you go again?
Yes, DS is keen to go back. We would not be likely to go back for breakfast but will go back for pizza one evening if we are in town.

Thanks again.

Firstly I'd like to thank mumsnet and Bella Italia for the opportunity to do this product test.

The day we went turned out to be during the week my bf had his kids, so we brought them along as well and paid for their food separately. It was a great opportunity for the 6 of us to eat out together, which is too expensive for us to do under normal circumstances.

I managed to email the restaurant to make the booking as the website did not clearly say to what hour the brunch menu was served. And online bookings were only for lunch and dinner.

The staff welcomed us warmly as we came in and showed us to a nice table. The restaurant is in a beautiful riverside location and I'd love to go back in the summer and eat in the garden. The ambience was relaxing and warm.

We got our drinks which were fine.

Food:
Gigante breakfast; the bacon was nice bacon, perfectly cooked. The sausages were really good too.

Pizza was delicious brilliant and filling, make sure to have enough space. (Age10) The fried egg in the centre was a nice addition. Could have been bigger. (Age 16)

Bacon pancakes
Good quality bacon but pancakes weren't really big enough. Could have had a side thing of something... Otherwise it's not a big enough dish. (Age 16)

Fruity pancakes; the syrup was too sweet, the strawberries were sour and the bananas were tasteless. (Age 8)

Steak was delicious potatoes were crispy great meal. (Adult)

We went to Bella on Saturday and had a lovely time Smile

Generally how did you find bella Italia as a place to visit with the family for breakfast? It was a nice atmosphere and lovely big tables so we didn’t have to all squeeze together.

How would you rate the food quality? Very good, everything looked and tasted really fresh.

How would you rate the selection of food? Excellent for adults, could have done with a few more choices for children.

Grown ups and kids- what did you choose? The adults had the bella breakfast and the gigante breakfast and the 2 children had the smiley face pancakes.

What was the best part about the experience? The service was very good and the food came quickly before the children got bored.

How about service: was it friendly and welcoming/ Very, the staff were patient and attentive, they didn’t mind the children making a bit of noise and they were happy to accommodate 2 extra family members who had come along to join us and pay for their breakfast.

Did you know Bella did breakfast prior to this? No

And lastly, would you go again? Yes

Generally - how did you find Bella as a place to visit with the family for breakfast?
The restaurant we visited was very quiet, I think there was only one other table in there and we were sitting in a booth opposite the bar which made me a little conscious of the volume of the kids who were particularly excited by the Christmas decorations, if it was busier I think it would have been nice.

Also we had to wait quite a while for the food and it would have been nice to have some crayons or similar while we waited.

How would you rate the food quality?
It was good, we all enjoyed the breakfast

How would you rate the selection of food – grown ups and kids - what did you and your DC choose?
The kids selection was poor, my 8 yr old and 3 yr old chose the pancake but it wasn't a big enough portion for the 8 yr old. My 5 yr old and 1yr old had the kids cooked breakfast which was better and a good size portion.

The adult selection was much better with loads of choice. I had the breakfast pizza which was really tasty and my DH had the diavolo omlette which he really enjoyed

How about service: was it friendly and welcoming?
Yes, although I did feel a little uncomfortable with the restaurant being so empty.

Did you know Bella did breakfast prior to this?
No

And lastly, would you go again?
Yes
