Swap your usual spread for Flora Buttery and you could win a £200 John Lewis voucher NOW CLOSED

We've been asked by Flora to find 200 MNers to try out Flora Buttery spread over the course of a couple of weeks.

Flora says: "Lovingly blended for a flavoursome buttery taste, Flora Buttery has a splash of buttermilk mixed in with our natural sunflower goodness. So you can smooth it over toast, daub it on hot asparagus or melt it into spuds for a little extra indulgence. It’s also great for baking and even pan-frying, so we’d love you to give it a try and let us know what you think"

Those selected will be given a voucher, which can be used to buy Flora Buttery 500g at most major supermarkets.

Selected testers will then need to swap their regular spread, butter or oil for Flora and use it for cooking, baking and spreading over the 2-week period.

This product test is open to all UK MNers with at least one child living at home.

The testing period will be from 4th to 17th November. During this time, you'll need to post your feedback on a thread on MN. Please only sign up if you and your family are available to take part during this time period.

God this is insane! I cannot believe you encouraging people to use a nasty chemical mess containing oxidised fatty acids instead of something natural like butter! Nutritional science is firmly reaching the consensus that saturated fat is not harmful, and that it is damaged plant oils, such as those used in spreads like this, which contribute to inflammatory disease processes like heart disease.
Speaking as a nutritionist I am really disappointed to see this spread being promoted on Mumsnet. I think the most 'family friendly' message you could be imparting would be to eat real food, not something created in a factory and containing ingredients which, throughout human history, have never been consumed in the manner or quantity being presented here.

I am interested to taste this as no margerine I have ever had tasted anything like butter.

Agree with Miss Plum. I won't change from 'my usual spread' (butter!) to flora for even a guaranteed £200! Ta very much anyway!

Another one holding tightly onto my butter (though I use yeo valley spreadable for sarnies as that is at least mostly butter, whisked up with a bit of oil and my kitchen is always hot or cold and rarely anything in between, so either I can't keep butter out of the fridge or it's still hard if I take it out of the fridge)

I use butter in moderation. I have family members who use olive oil based products including a DH who spread his bread with EVOO.

Natural animal fat, minimally processed, or a fake approximation thereof, put through many high temperature and chemical processes, dyed to look like butter and appalling high in omega 6... I know which is rather cook with, eat and feed to my children.

Margarine or any type of fake fat will never darken my door again (or my fridge!).

Ouryve, try KerryGold butter - pure butter but its soft enough to spread from the fridge. Tastes absolutely fabulous too.

Coincidentally I bought Flora Buttery at the weekend when I sent DS2 to get a tub of margarine and he got this one.

When I met DH I started using the flora in a circle tub but have bought most spreads over the years. Recently I have been using Lurpak spreadable and I love it but no one else finds it easy to use so I have several in the fridge.

I still have concerns as to the health benefits of a margarine like spread over butter and would be interested in knowing some facts.

Done. I like free stuff and the fewer people that sign up, the higher my chances of getting some money before Christmas.

Used Flora for some years as husband had high cholesterol, but after listening to an industrial chemist, we gave up margarine instantly. Evidently it is 'almost plastic' in its composition, and never goes off. That was enough for me - butter tastes so much better and we do need some cholesterol of the right kind to repair cells etc. - what we don't need is any more chemicals!

I got some of this as a substitute in my shopping not long ago and it was utterly vile. Tasted very chemical tbh. I use Lurpak Spreadable or pure butter (tesco value perfectly good) and would not go back to marg, and certainly not this type of marg, the olive spreads are better for you I think but they are yuk too.

Thanks, Raw. I'll give it a go because the YV spread isn't always easy to come by. I like the actual butter for baking and cooking (and on MY toast, on the rare occasion I eat it!).

Good thinking, SpareTime. I've done product tests of stuff I've turned out to hate, in the past.

Rosina - all the processed stuff mixed with margarine to make it palatable does go off. Very off.

Okay, so what exactly is Flora Buttery? Every butter substitute I have ever tasted, tastes of plastic. Will this taste of plastic? A whiff of a carrier bag on toast?

Flora buttery is vile, it has a horrible aftertaste. And previously to trying it, I liked every margarine I ever tasted and had no particular preference as they were all good - from own brand soya margarine through to I Can't Believe It's Not Butter.
