Swap your usual spread for Flora Buttery and you could win a £200 John Lewis voucher NOW CLOSED

We've been asked by Flora to find 200 MNers to try out Flora Buttery spread over the course of a couple of weeks.

Flora says: "Lovingly blended for a flavoursome buttery taste, Flora Buttery has a splash of buttermilk mixed in with our natural sunflower goodness. So you can smooth it over toast, daub it on hot asparagus or melt it into spuds for a little extra indulgence. It’s also great for baking and even pan-frying, so we’d love you to give it a try and let us know what you think"

Those selected will be given a voucher, which can be used to buy Flora Buttery 500g at most major supermarkets.

Selected testers will then need to swap their regular spread, butter or oil for Flora and use it for cooking, baking and spreading over the 2-week period.

This product test is open to all UK MNers with at least one child living at home.

The testing period will be from 4th to 17th November. During this time, you'll need to post your feedback on a thread on MN. Please only sign up if you and your family are available to take part during this time period.

If you'd like to take part, please sign up here.

Thanks and good luck,

MNHQ

Ha! See everyone I know in real life uses crap like this and judges me for using real butter for everything (or occasionally olive oil for pizza bases or tomatoey sauces. I get through 2 butters a week and more if baking, and that's only two adults and a toddler! Plus the toddler eats plain butter sticks, which he seems to enjoy Hmm

Not something pretending to be butter with some dubious health benefits but definite higher profit margin for the manufacturers...

I love MN.

Shredded, the toddler eating butter is quite usual - they are growing so fast they need a lot of calories and nutrients - butter is jam-packed with both. I have yet to any young child eat mouthfuls of "spread", I think their Little tastebuds know that stuff is not actually food!

Wrt everyone else you know eating spreads, don't let them make you feel defensive - eating real natural foodstuffs with real ingredients is just common sense, and the tide is turning, wrt animal fats being "bad" and veg seed oils being "good", even fairly mainstream advice is starting to change (just a little), with regards to animal fats/cholesterol (you can eat eggs after all, for example), and the fact that seed oils are not good due to omega 6 content.
There are even a few studies about butter being better than spreads (although these usually also tell you to limit fat intake Sad).

We'd all be a lot healthier if we eat more like our great grandparents c100 years ago.

Oh dear. We use Flora and I bought some of the Buttery one at the weekend to try.

I must admit I prefer real butter on my toast (as a treat) but always went along with all the usual stuff about margarine being healthier.

So having clicked on the thread thinking oh maybe I could do the survey, you've all practically convinced me to switch to butter nowConfused

Is there anything I can read up further on this? Dh may take some persuading.

Is the consensus for salted or unsalted? (I think salted tastes nicer personally)

I've got no DC so not eligible anyway.

I'll take real butter over fake food, any day of the week.

I've never come across this hatred of margarine spreads before! Shock

Have signed up as I've never tried Flora Buttery and I'll happily give it a go.

Questions:
Is butter more expensive than margarine?
I worry butter is more fattening than margarine?
Can someone find me a link, or list the facts of why spreads are so terrible?

I must admit I don't buy butter purely because my mum never did. It isn't wise to use her logic really though as we were always given sugar free/low fat/processed stuff in general when we'd have been better with wholesome, from scratch type foods. Hmm

I have a butter dish so it stays out of the fridge and therefore soft. We use it within a week so it doesn't go off - if it goes a bit yellow it's still fine. I always have about 8 in the fridge - it's like loo rolls or baby wipes, I live in fear of running out!

Cheaper than spreads. I use unsalted as have a baby and do lots of baking. I might get some salted too though... I have Maldon, maybe I could make my own. Although that's a bit too much faff.

Nothing nicer than mushrooms fried gently in loads of butter, with a clove of garlic. Or seeded bread toasted with lashings of it. Or chicken, cooked on a really high heat with loads of butter in a frying pan til the butter browns the chicken. Mmm.

YourHand - I don't think butter will make you fat Grin sugar is the culprit in most cases nowadays - I'd advise anyone wanting to lose weight to up their fat and protein drastically, and cut down on sugary stuff. I don't low carb but I do add masses of fat and salt to my food and don't tend to feel bloated or ravenous like I used to when I avoided fat, plus my skin and general health is better. Eggs, butter, cream in every sauce is my motto Grin I'm a slim size 10 btw.

Even the daily fail says butter is healthier (but yes, there are actual studies).

Sorry can't live link from phone.

I've come back to this thread after posting near the start and am surprised to see so many people agreeing! Looks like the tide is turning against 'fake food' as someone upthread called it! So... this thread went well for Flora! Ha!
