I liked that it tastes more of peanuts than of sugar (we had the crunchy jar), but the children said it wasn't sweet enough (heathens!).
Some of the nuts were almost whole, it could have done with being a little more consistent.
The RRP is quite high, I'd prefer a larger jar (or even a tub) that cost less per gram of peanut butter.
it's nice and nutty, but I'd have thought you should aim at making this the first peanut butter a child tastes, so they don't have the sweet stuff to compare it to.

HALA · 18/09/2013 13:37

I love the taste of crunchy peanut butter !

malteser17 · 18/09/2013 15:35

I'm not a tester but I always buy Whole Earth peanut butter because it's less sweet than the other varieties. And it's got to be crunchy all the time (apart from when I start feeding it to my son in a few months in which case I will relent and buy smooth) I love peanut butter and jam on toast (yes, on the same slice!).

halcyondays · 18/09/2013 17:41

I prefer crunchy, so does dd1. DD2 doesnt like peanut butter.

applebread · 18/09/2013 18:10

We get both sorts. I use the smooth sort to put a bit of protein into pancake mix or biscuits and I use the crunchy stuff on toast when I'm not eating it straight from the jar.

VerySmallSqueak · 18/09/2013 19:24

I really really fancy crunchy peanut butter, right now.
That's it really.

Thatsinteresting · 18/09/2013 19:53

Smooth for the toddler, crunchy for everyone else.

thecatfromjapan · 18/09/2013 20:06

I have made, so far, peanut butter chicken - sold to the children as Satay Chicken Tortillas.

I'm going to make peanut butter milkshake at some point, too.

I'm a bit late to the thread on account of my children having eaten the original jar of peanut butter and it's replacement. We do get through a lot of peanut butter, but I had explained to them that I needed to cook something particular and could they just leave this jar ... it appears not. Oh well.

Q1. It was as expected, since we do buy Whole Earth as a rule. We buy the crunchy version. The tasters like it very much. Too much, frankly.

Q2. We've done taste testing on most brands. Whole Earth has a more intense, less salty-sweet flavour. It does pack the peanut punch.

I really like peanuts: I like the Caribbean drink "Peanut Punch" and I love Reese's Peanut Butter Cups and peanut butter milkshake. Naming no names, but other supermarket brands don't really come close.

To be honest, I remember Meridian being quite good - and I saw the poster on the other thread saying that they don't use palm oil - I am tempted to hunt them down (because of the palm oil), but they are available mainly in health stores - which are a schlep - whereas Whole Earth in in supermarkets (convenient).

Q3. We're pretty much a peanut butter/honey household. They are our indulgences, and I am willing to put cost below taste as a consideration when it comes to buying these two items. I quite ruthlessly don't look at the prices for peanut butter and honey. I think I am parsimonious and careful elsewhere in the budget, so I can choose to not think about the cost here. I do think about the taste, though.

Q4. so far I have cooked Satay Chicken Tortillas. It was supposed to be Satay Chicken Lollipops but I was a bit tired, and this was a very quick meal ... with almost no washing-up afterwards (ha!).

As I said, I would have cooked more, and hopefully will cook more, but you have to be pretty darn quick in this house to get the peanut butter.

thecatfromjapan · 18/09/2013 20:08

Oops.

Q5. Would I recommend it?

Yes. If you like peanuts, this is the sort of peanut butter you want.

thecatfromjapan · 18/09/2013 20:11

Honestly, I am tired and headache-y tonight.

"Its" not "it's" - I cannot believe I did that with a possessive.

and ...

... what I meant to begin with, I shall finish with ...

... Thank You. I very much enjoyed receiving a parcel, and the family really enjoyed the peanut butter that was in that parcel. It was lovely. Smile

talkingnonsense · 18/09/2013 20:11

Not a tester: crunchy. And I like the organic (red top) better than the normal (green top). And I but whole earth because it doesn't have added sugar.

ViviDeBeauvoir · 18/09/2013 21:06

Crunchy!

There's nothing quite like a hot toasted peanut butter and jam sandwich.

2 slices of white sandwich bread, toasted.
One slice slathered in peanut butter (whole earth is actually my peanut butter of choice because it tastes peanutty and not synthetic) so it melts a little bit.

On the other slice; bonne maman strawberry jam with lots of strawberries in it.

Slap them together and cut in half.

Devour. Mmmmmm.

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 18/09/2013 21:16

Tester

Good texture and flavour. Not sweet and not gloopy.

I liked it more than some of the supermarket brands which can be a bit greasier.

Price is OK as I would expect to pay a bit more for a healthy
version.

I made some peanut butter and honey flapjacks for the children to have after school.

If someone mentioned they were looking for alternative to supermarket own brands or well known commercial brands I would suggest they tried it.

Non tester.
Love crunchy and smooth.
FYI: you should store opened jar of peanut butter in the fridge, I believe, to prevent growth of mould spores that can grow on the peanut skin.

Aworryingtrend · 19/09/2013 06:59

Non tester but DHs favourite peanut butter in the world is Whole Earth peanut butter.

florencebabyjo · 19/09/2013 08:01

Hi, I am a tester and this was a tasty challenge!
Q1. What did you/your DCs think of the consistency, texture and flavour of Whole Earth peanut butter? Was this similar/different to what you were expecting? They loved the crunchy texture and it was what I expected it to be. Nice chunks and a good mixture of smooth and pieces.

Q2. If you have tried other peanut butter brands before, how do you think Whole Earth Crunchy Original peanut butter compared overall? It was much less salty than the others with a good naturally sweet taste.

Q3. The RRP for 227g of Whole Earth Crunchy Original peanut butter is £1.99 and 454g is £3.19. Would you be happy to pay this? If so, why. If not, why not?
Yes, on taste alone I prefer this one.

Q4. How did you eat your peanut butter product? On its own? On toast? Did you use it in a recipe? If so, what did you cook? I did have a few sneaky spoonfulls straight out of the jar, but we had it in sandwiches, made peanut pork balls with satay sauce and also mini peanut and chocolate pies which was gorgeous. I did have to buy another jar as we got carried away.

Q5. If it came up in conversation would you recommend Whole Earth peanut butter to friends or family? If so, why? If not, why not? Yes, it was a great texture and taste and would be happy to recommend it.

Q1. Really enjoyed it; crunchier and fuller taste.

Q2. Nicer, less greasy, more taste.

Q3. Don't think there's anything wrong with the RRP but personally it would depend on finances and would devolve back to usual brand if skint

Q4. on toast with jam for breakfast/on toast with sliced banana for hangover cure/on toast with sliced fresh tomato and sprinkling of salt for treat

Q5. Have done when talking about testing it, said it was delicious

apatchylass · 19/09/2013 11:15

Tester here too. We got the crunchy.

  1. Loved the texture and flavour, though DS prefers smooth normally.
  1. It didn't taste too palm oil-y, which was a surprise as I don't like palm oil and it usually taints food imo, but this just tasted of nuts and salt. I liked the salty flavour and that it had no sugar, as the supermarket brands tend to taste a lot more processed. (The salt content was fine btw - we all need some salt in the diet and this is a tasty way to have it.)
  1. The price is good value for what it is, but I would tend towards cheaper brands these days simply because the budget is tight.
  1. Mostly just eaten and enjoyed on hot toast but I used the last of it to make a citrussy curry with skinned boned chicken thighs, coconut milk, lots of grated fresh ginger and the zest and juice of 2 limes, a lemon and an orange, plus a bit of turmeric, cumin and fenugreek powder, cooked with butternut squash and peas, served with brown rice. Lovely! Sorry, I didn't take a photo as DC scoffed it down before I had a chance. But the peanut butter gave a lovely savoury density to the sauce. I'd do it again, and would buy Whole Earth for this recipe as I don't think cheaper brands with sugar in would work well.
  1. Yes
BigGapMum · 19/09/2013 11:18

Not a tester.
It's crunchy all the way in this house. You can't beat those little lumps of nuts.
We love peanut butter cookies too.

KvassInTheNight · 19/09/2013 15:04

Loved the crunchy version. It's much more intensely peanutty than any other nut butter I have tried. As well as being good on toast/ in sandwiches/ on celery it's got enough flavour to cook with. The fact that it has no sugar means can use it while low carbing. Love it.

jennymac · 19/09/2013 15:40

Crunchy definitely!

SweetSeraphim · 19/09/2013 18:08

Tester...

Q1. What did you/your DCs think of the consistency, texture and flavour of Whole Earth peanut butter? Was this similar/different to what you were expecting?

One of mine loved it, the other hated it! Personally I thought it was delicious. Just the right amount of proper peanutty texture.

Q2. If you have tried other peanut butter brands before, how do you think Whole Earth Crunchy Original peanut butter compared overall?

Much better. It's very flavoursome, and I love that it's natural.

Q3. The RRP for 227g of Whole Earth Crunchy Original peanut butter is £1.99 and 454g is £3.19. Would you be happy to pay this? If so, why. If not, why not?

I would be happy to pay it, although I suspect I'll have to buy a cheaper one as well for dd.

Q4. How did you eat your peanut butter product? On its own? On toast? Did you use it in a recipe? If so, what did you cook?

We had it on toast and in a peanut butter and banana wrap.

Q5. If it came up in conversation would you recommend Whole Earth peanut butter to friends or family? If so, why? If not, why not?

Definitely. I'm a convert!

I love Whole Earth peanut butter and much prefer crunchy especially melted into toast.

hjmiller · 20/09/2013 05:31

I wasn't a tester but love Whole Earth and am crunchy all the way!

SmeeHee · 20/09/2013 10:35

Q1. What did you/your DCs think of the consistency, texture and flavour of Whole Earth peanut butter? Was this similar/different to what you were expecting?

DS1 (6) wasn't keen on the crunchy bits, but then he isn't a big fan of peanut butter anyway. DS2 (2) and I both liked it.

Q2. If you have tried other peanut butter brands before, how do you think Whole Earth Crunchy Original peanut butter compared overall?

I used to have crunchy SunPat as a child but have always bought smooth SunPat for the children (out of habit more than anything else, although don't know why I started on the smooth rather than crunchy). When directly comparing the Whole Earth peanut butter with the SunPat it definitely tasted less sweet but I don't know if I'd notice it otherwise. The children didn't comment on any differences in flavour, just the texture.

Q3. The RRP for 227g of Whole Earth Crunchy Original peanut butter is £1.99 and 454g is £3.19. Would you be happy to pay this? If so, why. If not, why not?

I've never really considered the price aspect but I'm now having to watch what I spend so have just checked the prices of other brands on a supermarket website and I am Shock at the difference in price. SunPat costs about 46.5p per 100g and Waitrose Organic is 58.5p so I'm afraid that I won't be buying Whole Earth!

Q4. How did you eat your peanut butter product? On its own? On toast? Did you use it in a recipe? If so, what did you cook?

Ate it on toast. Haven't cooked with it yet but I'm planning on making a satay sauce or maybe cookies.

Q5. If it came up in conversation would you recommend Whole Earth peanut butter to friends or family? If so, why? If not, why not?

Yes - if money really isn't an issue for them!
