This thread is for the 250 Mumsnetters who have been trying out the new 2in1 recipe mixes from Schwartz.

Here's what they say: "The new 2in1 range offers two easy to use recipe mix sachets in one handy pack: one sachet flavours the main dish whilst the other contains a seasoning for a complementary side dish or topping. With five different varieties to choose from, and an easy recipe on the back of each pack, this is a great way to try out new dishes or transform an existing family favourite from ordinary to special."

Mumsnetters have been trying the following recipe mixes:

Below are some questions for you to answer but please do feel free to add any other comments you may also have. We'd like you to post at least 3 sets of feedback - answering the same questions for each recipe mix you try. Please also upload any pictures you take of your creations. • How would you rate this recipe mix out of 5 (1 being lowest and 5 highest)
5 out of 5
  • What did you/your DCs think of the overall flavour of the product?
They both loved it - had it with salad and new potatoes and everything got dipped.
  • How easy, or difficult, did you find the 2in1 mix to use?
I did the chicken which I thought was very simple and the kids did the dip - was lovely for them to be able to be involved to a degree.
  • Did you follow the recipe on the back of the packet or did you add/take away any other ingredients?
Followed them to the letter.
  • Would you say the 2in1 recipe mix made your mealtimes easier at all? If so, why? If not, why not?
Yes, most certainly. The kids were more inclined to try something new as they got involved in its preparation.
  • Do you think you will buy, or look to buy, Schwartz 2in1 recipe mixes in the future? If so, why? If not, why not?
Yes most certainly as long as they are stocked by Waitrose and I can order them on line.

I loved it - it made me try something new and the kids were very excited about helping out and trying it.

Which 2in1 recipe mix did you try?
Chicken Tikka + Mint & Cucumber Raita
How would you rate this recipe mix out of 5 (1 being lowest and 5 highest)?
2/5 on average

What did you/your DCs think of the overall flavour of the product?
I was hopeful about this one, having read some positive reviews of it by others. Unfortunately I was disappointed. It wasn?t very tasty. The dip was a bit bland and we didn?t really like the taste of the chicken.

How easy, or difficult, did you find the 2in1 mix to use?
I didn?t read the instructions the first time I got chicken out and so missed the marinade overnight bit. DH took over in kitchen and whipped up some spices to coat. Quite frankly I should have let him do so the second time around. His version was easier to prepare and vastly better.

Did you follow the recipe on the back of the packet or did you add/take away any other ingredients?
We followed the recipe on the packet . Hmmmm.

Would you say the 2in1 recipe mix made your mealtimes easier at all? If so, why? If not, why not?
I wouldn?t say it really made mealtimes easier at all. I rarely marinade things overnight and am often in a hurry weekdays. The fact that I hadn?t thought about it the day before the first time I went to cook this was obviously a problem. It wasn?t terribly popular with DSs, so again had to deal with hungry tummies post dinner.

Do you think you will buy, or look to buy, Schwartz 2in1 recipe mixes in the future? If so, why? If not, why not?
So far we?ve had 2 thumbs down and 1 thumb wavering, so probably not. They just don?t taste great or save time.

Overall, would you say you loved the 2in1 recipe mix, you liked it or you hated it?
Didn?t really like I?m afraid.

  • Which 2in1 recipe mix did you try?
We tried the garlic and tyme roast chicken and roast potatos
  • How would you rate this recipe mix out of 5 (1 being lowest and 5 highest)
5 from me and dh
  • What did you/your DCs think of the overall flavour of the product?
She liked the potatos but wouldn't try the chicken - no idea why!
  • How easy, or difficult, did you find the 2in1 mix to use?
This was really easy :) very clear instructions
  • Did you follow the recipe on the back of the packet or did you add/take away any other ingredients?
We followed the packet
  • Would you say the 2in1 recipe mix made your mealtimes easier at all? If so, why? If not, why not?
This one did, it meant i didnt have to search through recipe books looking for ideas how to season a roast, and buy lots of random seasonings. I rarely make a roast so it was lovely and easy
  • Do you think you will buy, or look to buy, Schwartz 2in1 recipe mixes in the future? If so, why? If not, why not?
This one i would, we really liked it and it is something we know we like, so i would buy it.
  • Overall, would you say you loved the 2in1 recipe mix, you liked it or you hated it?
We loved it, and the juice from the meat made a really good gravy with a bit of seasoning :)

This is a picture of our chicken :)

- Which 2in1 recipe mix did you try? Chicken Tikka + mint & cucumber raita
- How would you rate this recipe mix out of 5 (1 being lowest and 5 highest) 3 I found it quite bland.
- What did you/your DCs think of the overall flavour of the product? My girls really loved this one as well, my youngest asked me to make it again, I reckon it would be a perfect marinade for barbecued chicken actually.
- How easy, or difficult, did you find the 2in1 mix to use? Very easy and straight forward
- Did you follow the recipe on the back of the packet or did you add/take away any other ingredients? I cooked the chicken in the oven wrapped in foil, then I uncovered it and grilled it to char it a bit, I don't think cooking it as per the instructions would have cooked the chicken thro.
I added crushed garlic, ginger and toasted powdered cumin and coriander seeds to the riata otherwise it was boring, I also needed to add a bit of salt.
I served it with parathas.
- Would you say the 2in1 recipe mix made your mealtimes easier at all? If so, why? If not, why not? Yes, it requires very little thinking which I feel is half the battle in producing a family meal!
- Do you think you will buy, or look to buy, Schwartz 2in1 recipe mixes in the future? If so, why? If not, why not? Yes I will, for days when I want to do the minimum of cooking and want a break from the norm.
- Overall, would you say you loved the 2in1 recipe mix, you liked it or you hated it? This one we liked a lot.

  • How would you rate this recipe mix out of 5 (1 being lowest and 5 highest) .......3
  • What did you/your DCs think of the overall flavour of the product?
We had ours in a wrap.. was actually pretty tasty. I wasn't a big fan of the dip but it was ok. DS (2) liked the chicken but not the dip.
  • How easy, or difficult, did you find the 2in1 mix to use?
Ver easy
  • Did you follow the recipe on the back of the packet or did you add/take away any other ingredients?
We did ours in a herb wrap with peppers and onions.
  • Would you say the 2in1 recipe mix made your mealtimes easier at all? If so, why? If not, why not?
This meal time was easier, it was very quick to do and we used products we a;ways have in the house.
  • Do you think you will buy, or look to buy, Schwartz 2in1 recipe mixes in the future? If so, why? If not, why not?
I don't think I would buy this one again but perhaps would if the chicken coating was available separately.

  • Which 2in1 recipe mix did you try?
Southern style chicken bites and bbq dip
  • How would you rate this recipe mix out of 5 (1 being lowest and 5 highest)
5 and 5 from dh
  • What did you/your DCs think of the overall flavour of the product?
She wouldn't eat it as it didnt look like her normal chicken :(
  • How easy, or difficult, did you find the 2in1 mix to use?
This was very easy, and it had ingredients that we had in the cupboards already.
  • Did you follow the recipe on the back of the packet or did you add/take away any other ingredients?
We followed the packet
  • Would you say the 2in1 recipe mix made your mealtimes easier at all? If so, why? If not, why not?
I wouldn't say this one is easier as you can buy things like chicken bites already made and bbq sauce ready made without creating more washing up. But we thought they were so nice. It tasted so good!
  • Do you think you will buy, or look to buy, Schwartz 2in1 recipe mixes in the future? If so, why? If not, why not?
This one I would as well, the chicken tasted so good :) i would probably put it in a salad next time. We always have bbq sauce in our house, so that part wasn't so useful to us, dh liked it the more he ate it, but i thought it was a bit powdery- it was ok though :)
  • Overall, would you say you loved the 2in1 recipe mix, you liked it or you hated it?
We both loved this one

2 in 1 recipe mix : Chicken Tikka + mint & Cucumber Raita

Overall this recipe went down well in our household. The recipe mix was easy to follow and the tasted good. We did not feel the need to make alterations to the instructions.

We would rate the recipe as 3/5.

This made our evening meal much easier as the meal took very little preparation and could be prepared in between attending to our 3 week old son. Also, when served with pitta bread and salad could be eaten one handed which I found very useful with a newborn to look after

poppy1973 · 02/07/2013 12:55

Which 2in1 recipe mix did you try?
This is the second recipe - we tried the chicken tikka mix

  • How would you rate this recipe mix out of 5 (1 being lowest and 5 highest)
Going to give this a 3
  • What did you/your DCs think of the overall flavour of the product?

  • Would you say the 2in1 recipe mix made your mealtimes easier at all? If so, why? If not, why not?
Something different to do with the chicken, easy option. So yes it made my cooking time quicker and easier.
  • Do you think you will buy, or look to buy, Schwartz 2in1 recipe mixes in the future? If so, why? If not, why not?
I probably would keep a packet in the cupboard if it was sold on offer in the supermarkets. The children felt it was okay so it would be handy for them.
  • Overall, would you say you loved the 2in1 recipe mix, you liked it or you hated it? The children thought it was okay, a bit bland for my husband and me as we like spicer food generally. Overall - liked it.

We all enjoyed it, I prefered this one to the southern style one we tried last week. We all ate it and the dip was very tasty :)
  • How easy, or difficult, did you find the 2in1 mix to use?
It was easy, although it seems to be a waste of an egg to me as most of it gets tipped away. would prefer if the mixture would stick alone (probably impossible!)
  • Did you follow the recipe on the back of the packet or did you add/take away any other ingredients?
yes I followed the recipe
  • Would you say the 2in1 recipe mix made your mealtimes easier at all? If so, why? If not, why not?

Tried the garlic and herb chicken, and everybody really enjoyed it. I would give it a rating of 5. It was easy to prepare - even my kids can do it, following the recipe on the back. I would definately buy it again, as it saves so much time.

ash1112 · 02/07/2013 14:31
  1. Tried the chicken tikka mix
  2. 4/5
  3. We all enjoyed this. I made this yesterday and it went down a treat. My husband loved it too. dd enjoyed the chicken as well! The raita didn't live up to our expectations, I would have made a better one myself.
  4. It was very easy to use this mix. It's a lot easier than making your own mix of spices.
  5. I followed the instructions. I made the cucumber in the raita small cubes instead of grated because that's how dd loves them.
  6. It certainly made dinner easier, I had the chicken marinated over night so just had to pop em under the grill!
  7. I will certainly buy this again.
  8. Loved it!

Which 2in1 recipe mix did you try?

Garlic and Herb Crunchy Bites and Cheese and Herb Dip

  • How would you rate this recipe mix out of 5 (1 being lowest and 5 highest) 3
  • What did you/your DCs think of the overall flavour of the product? The flavour was fine. It was tasty but not particularly strong. Perhaps we use lots more garlic in our cooking but the taste was quite mild.
  • How easy, or difficult, did you find the 2in1 mix to use? The mix was very easy to use and the crumbs were a nice texture.
  • Did you follow the recipe on the back of the packet or did you add/take away any other ingredients? I followed the alternative suggestion and used the mix with fish rather than chicken. I kept the fish in fillets rather than cutting into fingers.
  • Would you say the 2in1 recipe mix made your mealtimes easier at all? If so, why? If not, why not? Yes the recipe mix made the meal easier as I didn't have to prepare the breadcrumbs or chop herbs / prepare garlic. The dip was very quick to prepare but usually we would just have mayonnaise so this was more effort than I would make.
  • Do you think you will buy, or look to buy, Schwartz 2in1 recipe mixes in the future? If so, why? If not, why not? I would potentially use the mixes again as a convenience, although probably not this pack as the flavour wasn't that strong
  • Overall, would you say you loved the 2in1 recipe mix, you liked it or you hated it? We liked the recipe mix.

  • How easy, or difficult, did you find the 2in1 mix to use? Easy peasy!
  • Did you follow the recipe on the back of the packet or did you add/take away any other ingredients? I followed it except I used a red pepper and I cooked the chicken in a pan that could go in the oven so I wouldn't have to dirty another dish.
  • Would you say the 2in1 recipe mix made your mealtimes easier at all? If so, why? If not, why not? Not so much easier, as it's very similar to one I already make, but a different flavour.

  • What did you/your DCs think of the overall flavour of the product?

Didn't notice any difference from a normal roast. I tbought it smelt lovely and had high hopes but once again the flavour is not strong enough.

  • How easy, or difficult, did you find the 2in1 mix to use?

Bit confused on the instructions regarding timings. If your not used to cooking a roast very confusing but I stuck to what I knew and just added the packet at the stage it was required.

  • Did you follow the recipe on the back of the packet or did you add/take away any other ingredients?

Followed

  • Would you say the 2in1 recipe mix made your mealtimes easier at all? If so, why? If not, why not?

Not on this occation. A roast is a very practiced meal and this just put faf into it.

No. Flavour not strong enough.

]- What did you/your DCs think of the overall flavour of the product?

My son enjoyed it but my daughter wasn't impressed. I didn't like the flavour of the sauce and again (sorry) the flavour of the chicken was not strong enough.
However I actually quite liked it with mayo which brought out the flavour a bit more.

Which 2in1 recipe mix did you try?

Chicken Tikka + mint & cucumber raita

How would you rate this recipe mix out of 5 (1 being lowest and 5 highest)

1/5 I can safely say this was the worst out of all 5.

What did you/your DCs think of the overall flavour of the product?

So when I first had this on my plate I couldn't wait to try it I normally love the homemade Tikka chicken that my partner makes. I saw the sauce however and it had chuncky bits so I was thinking that it wouldn't taste that nice as the flavour prehaps would be too strong. Oh how I was wrong, I had some of the sauce first and it was soooo lovely! So lovely infact it was much better then the chicken! Urgh the chicken, it tasted bitter and left a horrible aftertaste in my mouth. I dunno why maybe it was because it was a powder instead of the paste but it was just sooo bitter. We followed the recipe so didn't overload it with lemon...just..oh god that taste never want to taste it again. My partner and my son thought the same.

How easy, or difficult, did you find the 2in1 mix to use?

I found this quite easy. However there had been easier recipes out the 5.

Did you follow the recipe on the back of the packet or did you add/take away any other ingredients?

I followed the recipe on the back of the packet, though I also added rice and a nan bread.

Would you say the 2in1 recipe mix made your mealtimes easier at all? If so, why? If not, why not?

It made it easier but I would of rather it take longer to prepare if it tasted nicer.

Do you think you will buy, or look to buy, Schwartz 2in1 recipe mixes in the future? If so, why? If not, why not?

No defenitely not! I will prefer to make it myself from scratch.

Overall, would you say you loved the 2in1 recipe mix, you liked it or you hated it?

I hated this without a doubt.

Which 2in1 recipe mix did you try?
Chicken Tikka and Mint and Cucumber Raita

  • How would you rate this recipe mix out of 5 (1 being lowest and 5 highest) 3.5 our of 5
  • What did you/your DCs think of the overall flavour of the
product? The chicken was initially really nice and was a good spicy flavour, however it has a bit of a harsh after-taste. My DH described this as being like the flavour he tastes after having horseradish.

The 2 in 1 mix was very easy to use.
  • Did you follow the recipe on the back of the packet or did you add/take away any other ingredients?
Yes, I followed the advice to marinate overnight to get the best flavour.
  • Would you say the 2in1 recipe mix made your mealtimes easier at all? If so, why? If not, why not?
Yes, definitely an easy midweek tea for the family tonight. We supplemented the meal with some bought naan bread, some onion bhajis and a bit of salad.

Perhaps as a convenience meal or to take when we are self-catering on holiday.

My third review.

  • Which 2in1 recipe mix did you try?

Garlic & Thyme roast chicken + crispy roast potatoes

  • What did you/your DCs think of the overall flavour of the product?

It tasted better than it smelled when cooking. I didn't like how the skin cooked in the foil - it came out a bit wet and rubbery rather than crispy so we all removed it and therefore most of the flavour from the mix I think. The potatoes were quite nice. I was expecting the DC not to like them as they really like the way that I make roasties but they gobbled them up.

  • How easy, or difficult, did you find the 2in1 mix to use?

Easy

  • Did you follow the recipe on the back of the packet or did you add/take away any other ingredients?

Pretty much followed exactly. Served with steamed broccoli and roast carrots.

  • Would you say the 2in1 recipe mix made your mealtimes easier at all? If so, why? If not, why not?

It didn't make it easier or harder.

  • Do you think you will buy, or look to buy, Schwartz 2in1 recipe mixes in the future? If so, why? If not, why not?

I wouldn't buy this particular mix again as I didn't feel it made enough difference and I prefer the way I normally make this meal.

Liked it-ish.
