This thread is for the 250 Mumsnetters who have been trying out the new 2in1 recipe mixes from Schwartz.

Here's what they say: "The new 2in1 range offers two easy to use recipe mix sachets in one handy pack: one sachet flavours the main dish whilst the other contains a seasoning for a complementary side dish or topping. With five different varieties to choose from, and an easy recipe on the back of each pack, this is a great way to try out new dishes or transform an existing family favourite from ordinary to special."

Mumsnetters have been trying the following recipe mixes:

Below are some questions for you to answer but please do feel free to add any other comments you may also have. We'd like you to post at least 3 sets of feedback - answering the same questions for each recipe mix you try. Please also upload any pictures you take of your creations. Dish number 2:

  • Garlic & Thyme roast chicken + crispy roast potatoes
  • How would you rate this recipe mix out of 5 (1 being lowest and 5 highest)

2/5

  • What did you/your DCs think of the overall flavour of the product?

He ate it and said it was nice. Enjoyed the potatoes.

  • How easy, or difficult, did you find the 2in1 mix to use?

Very easy to use.

  • Did you follow the recipe on the back of the packet or did you add/take away any other ingredients?

Yes, I followed it. I put carrots in the tray with the chicken.

  • Would you say the 2in1 recipe mix made your mealtimes easier at all? If so, why? If not, why not?

Not really. I rubbed on the chicken powder mix onto the chicken. Like what I sometimes do with the 'season and shake' packs and 'oh so juicy' packs so not much difference.

  • Do you think you will buy, or look to buy, Schwartz 2in1 recipe mixes in the future? If so, why? If not, why not?

I wouldn't buy this one as I found it very bland. I think the instructions on the back were poor. I had to turn the temperature of the oven up in the end as gas mark 5 was too low it seemed.

  • Overall, would you say you loved the 2in1 recipe mix, you liked it or you hated it?

No, nothing special and was very bland in comparison to the other flavour packs I mention above, which I sometimes use without the bag and cook as this one suggests. The potatoes were ok but expected more flavour from it,

Which 2in1 recipe mix did you try?

Today we did the Garlic & Thyme Roast Chicken with Crispy Roast Potatoes.

How would you rate this recipe mix out of 5 (1 being lowest and 5 highest)

Well, I normally cheat & buy a ready prepared garlic chicken but today I had a lovely free-range plain one to try out this recipe on. The chicken turned out perfectly and I was mighty relieved as I had the GP's eatng with us too and I wanted it to turn out OK. Everyone said it was good, and everyne had clear plates, so I'd say a 4.5.

What did you/your DCs think of the overall flavour of the product?

We all really enjoyed it, as I said before, clean plates all round Grin

How easy, or difficult, did you find the 2in1 mix to use?

So simple. DGM read out the instructions to me, and I followed 'em!

Did you follow the recipe on the back of the packet or did you add/take away any other ingredients?

Just followed the instructions to the letter!

Would you say the 2in1 recipe mix made your mealtimes easier at all? If so, why? If not, why not?

I thought it was slightly easier than the way I normally cook the chicken and a quicker way of seasoning the potatoes.

Do you think you will buy, or look to buy, Schwartz 2in1 recipe mixes in the future? If so, why? If not, why not?

Oh yes Smile

Overall, would you say you loved the 2in1 recipe mix, you liked it or you hated it?

I liked it for the roast chicken, but I prefer the way I usually season my roast potatoes. So half & half really.

vjhist85 · 30/06/2013 21:55

Southern style crunchy bites for us tonight. DH in charge again, and he said they were easy to make. The bites themselves were really tasty, chicken stayed nice and moist and the coating was lovely.

The BBQ dip was tasty (although felt a bit silly as its made from ketchup and we had a bottle of BBQ sauce in the cupboard which would have been easier!) We had this with some steamed broccoli.

Again, I felt that this filled a gap between convenience food and home cooked food. To be honest, if I want convenience, I want proper convenience (think ready breaded chicken that goes straight in the oven), and if I want to cook then I want to cook from scratch. However, I think these are great for hubby who is not confident in the kitchen.

A belated start to the spice mix party but here we go:

Which 2in1 recipe mix did you try?
Chicken Tikka + Raita

How would you rate this recipe mix out of 5

  1. Meal shared with PILs and baby daughter. She liked the bit of raita she had so might have said 4 if she could.

What did you/your DCs think of the overall flavour of the product?
Disappointed, really. I thought the raita was underwhelming (and as at least one previous poster has said, watery, despite using less than suggested cucumber.) The chicken pieces were spicy (too spicy for MIL) and according to FIL 'like vaseline.' (Charming!) All agreed they had heat but not much flavour otherwise. I did think they cooked nicely in the yoghurt marinade though

How easy, or difficult, did you find the 2in1 mix to use?
Pretty easy. Had to double check which sachet was which and this was not totally clear.

Did you follow the recipe on the back of the packet or did you add/take away any other ingredients?
Yes, though I baked rather than grilled the chicken.

Would you say the 2in1 recipe mix made your mealtimes easier at all? If so, why? If not, why not?
Faster than making a full curry but not much saving on marinated grilled chicken I don't think.

Do you think you will buy, or look to buy, Schwartz 2in1 recipe mixes in the future? If so, why? If not, why not?
Probably not - have yet to try other packets but my first impression was that I can make my own seasoning mixes and don't need to buy extra packets.

Overall, would you say you loved the 2in1 recipe mix, you liked it or you hated it?
Somewhere between liked and disliked. Not bad as a stop gap or to take away for self-catering holidays or some such when a spice rack is not available! But the chicken pieces were not a success (though they were polished off.)

  • Which 2in1 recipe mix did you try?
Chicken Tikka
  • How would you rate this recipe mix out of 5 (1 being lowest and 5 highest)
3/5
  • What did you/your DCs think of the overall flavour of the product?
Bit too spicy for me but DH liked it.
  • How easy, or difficult, did you find the 2in1 mix to use?
In the middle. It is easy to use but a bit too much preparation for me. Certainly would not have the time or organisation to marinate the chicken the day before.
  • Did you follow the recipe on the back of the packet or did you add/take away any other ingredients?
Did not use mint & cucumber Riata as it is something none of us in the house like.
  • Would you say the 2in1 recipe mix made your mealtimes easier at all? If so, why? If not, why not?
Too much preparation for my liking & would never think to marinate the chicken the night before. Used ingredients that I never normally buy so had to buy them specially to make this meal. I would prefer just to buy pre-made chicken tikka products.
  • Do you think you will buy, or look to buy, Schwartz 2in1 recipe mixes in the future? If so, why? If not, why not?
Depends if the price is right. I usually buy supermarket own brands as they are cheaper.
  • Overall, would you say you loved the 2in1 recipe mix, you liked it or you hated it?
Was OK. Wouldn't buy again.

4/5
  • What did you/your DCs think of the overall flavour of the product?
Very nice indeed.
  • How easy, or difficult, did you find the 2in1 mix to use?
Very easy but more preparation than I would normally do.
  • Did you follow the recipe on the back of the packet or did you add/take away any other ingredients?
Followed recipe.
  • Would you say the 2in1 recipe mix made your mealtimes easier at all? If so, why? If not, why not?
No. I would normally just buy pre-done chicken bites & already have BBQ sauce in the cupboard. So made mealtime harder as I had to spend more time preparing.
  • Do you think you will buy, or look to buy, Schwartz 2in1 recipe mixes in the future? If so, why? If not, why not?
Yes if the price was reasonable. Would buy Supermarket own brands if cheaper.

Very nice

Easy

Used red pepper rather than yellow as I prefer it.
  • Would you say the 2in1 recipe mix made your mealtimes easier at all? If so, why? If not, why not?
On the fence. I would normally buy a pre-done jar of pasta sauce for quick & ease but was nice to make this from scratch. Took a bit of preparation to fry chicken, then cook in pan & then put under the grill. Had a lot of washing up to do as used so many pans!

Which 2in1 recipe mix did you try?
Southern Stlye Chicken Bites with BBQ dip

  • How would you rate this recipe mix out of 5 (1 being lowest and 5 highest) 5
  • What did you/your DCs think of the overall flavour of the product?
They loved the taste of the chicken and it was not too peppery, so even DD who is only 2 enjoyed it. The dip was tasty and complemented the chicken well.
  • How easy, or difficult, did you find the 2in1 mix to use?
Very easy although it may have been better to have the dip already to squeeze from the packet as it seemed silly to mix up the ketchp and was a bit fiddly.
  • Did you follow the recipe on the back of the packet or did you add/take away any other ingredients?
We followed the recipe and served with salad and baked potatoes.
  • Would you say the 2in1 recipe mix made your mealtimes easier at all? If so, why? If not, why not? Again, it was easier as it made a different kind of meal and I normally do everything rom scratch, but time wise not much different after egging and breading the chicken.
  • Do you think you will buy, or look to buy, Schwartz 2in1 recipe mixes in the future? If so, why? If not, why not? I might buy this one as a treat and the tikka one as everyone loved these two.
  • Overall, would you say you loved the 2in1 recipe mix, you liked it or you hated it? I would say everyone loved this one, very tasty!
DoodleAlley · 01/07/2013 08:25

So my second review is for the chicken tikka bites.
I would rate these as a three/four.
I enjoyed the flavour but it was too spicy for DS but then lots of curry spice mixes would be.
The mix was easy to use, but then no easier than doing it myself with my own brand tikka spice mix.
I followed the instructions to begin with so I could taste it as the packet intended, but I couldn't really make a meal out of it so I had kept out spare spice and added some passata and yogurt to make a sauce and ate it with rice.
Did it make mealtimes easier? Well having the instructions would have done if I had wanted tikka bites and I might consider this again but for a curry it was the same as normal.
I would actually buy this again if I was intending to do chicken tikka.
In summary I quite liked it, just not for a normal curry as the texture was a bit weird but the flavour nice.

DoodleAlley · 01/07/2013 08:28

Adding a couple of general comments if I may?

I think if you regularly cook meals from scratch these packets don't always seem to add much and can seem over processed or unnecessary but if you don't cook that item from scratch the concept at least is fun.

As someone on a diet it would have been helpful for you to separate the nutritional information for each sachet. The lack of this info might deter me from purchasing in future.

Pascha · 01/07/2013 09:14

No picture this time as the camera wasn't available. DH made it and forgot

Which 2in1 recipe mix did you try? Southern Style crunchy chicken bites & BBQ dip
How would you rate this recipe mix out of 5 (1 being lowest and 5 highest) 3.5/5 The chicken coating was very tasty and crisped up nicely, the BBQ sauce was a bit silly, DH said it tasted no different to the bottled stuff we have in the fridge anyway. I don't like BBQ flavour so I just had mayonnaise.
What did you/your DCs think of the overall flavour of the product? DS1 loved it, he is fussy with meat (and everything else) but quite happily had at least 2 bits of chicken. It made me consider how many vegetables you could get away with in a breadcrumb coating.
How easy, or difficult, did you find the 2in1 mix to use? DH made this one, with the 'help' of DS1. He found it very simple but complained there was not enough for the chicken so some was a bit bare. I agree with this. How can this be for four portions? 2 adults and 1 child found it barely enough with lots of food on the side.
Did you follow the recipe on the back of the packet or did you add/take away any other ingredients? Followed the recipe (such as it is) and added wedges and salad to make a meal.
Would you say the 2in1 recipe mix made your mealtimes easier at all? If so, why? If not, why not? as easy as anything else I suppose.

Do you think you will buy, or look to buy, Schwartz 2in1 recipe mixes in the future? If so, why? If not, why not? I'm not sure I would, as these trials go on, I feel more and more that they aren't actually good value for money if you're cooking for a family. The all-in-one mixes are ok I suppose, pasta bake etc, but the individual ones like this one are not enough. I'd rather have a big jar of some of the mixes and use how much I needed each time.
Overall, would you say you loved the 2in1 recipe mix, you liked it or you hated it? DS1 loved it, DH and I liked it.

Which 2in1 recipe mix did you try? Southern Crunchy Chicken Bites & BBQ dip

How would you rate this recipe mix out of 5? 3, the coating was ok the BBQ wasn't anything special/wouldn't of missed it if we just had the coating & used other BBQ sauce.

What did you/your DCs think of the overall flavour of the product? DH & DS both liked the chicken, I felt it wasn't spicy enough/there wasn't a strong enough kick.

How easy, or difficult, did you find the 2in1 mix to use? Foolproof, simple to follow instructions.

Did you follow the recipe on the back of the packet or did you add/take away any other ingredients? Followed the recipe.

Would you say the 2in1 recipe mix made your mealtimes easier at all? If so, why? If not, why not? Easier as it was quicker/less prep/washing up than making coating & breading chicken from scratch.

Do you think you will buy, or look to buy, Schwartz 2in1 recipe mixes in the future? If so, why? If not, why not? I wouldn't buy this one for myself again, but as an easy dish to prepare for DH/DS/others I'd probably buy from the range again (not this one, didn't see the point of the BBQ sauce).

Overall, would you say you loved the 2in1 recipe mix, you liked it or you hated it? Hated it is most accurate. Liked how easy it was prepared, hated how flavourless it was.

3rd feedback.

Garlic and thyme roast chicken.

Everyone enjoyed the chicken, thought it was tasty and DH had some in a sandwich for tea and said it was very tasty cold too. DC said it was really good. Roast potatoes weren't so popular, they were just so-so, and we all said we preferred regular roast potatoes.

I followed the instructions on the pack. It was easy to use, but really didn't make a roast any easier if that makes sense.

I wouldn't buy this sachet again, but will look for something similar but that contains just the seasoning for a roast chicken as we all thought it made a nice change from our usual 'stick a lemon inside' roast chicken Smile

We all liked one part of it, so 3/5 seems a fair score.

Which 2in1 recipe mix did you try? Chicken Tikka & mint raita.

How would you rate this recipe mix out of 5? 1

What did you/your DCs think of the overall flavour of the product? Didn't like the yogurt seasoning, tasted really artificial. Although the tikka seasoning was spicy, it was very bland.

How easy, or difficult, did you find the 2in1 mix to use? Very easy

Did you follow the recipe on the back of the packet or did you add/take away any other ingredients? Followed recipe, left chicken marinating overnight.

  • Would you say the 2in1 recipe mix made your mealtimes easier at all? If so, why? If not, why not? No, I marinate my chicken overnight anyway...I think the appeal of packet/'lazy' dish food should be being able to cook them on a whim/last minute (and have them taste ok) instead of cooking as you would do normally from scratch.

Do you think you will buy, or look to buy, Schwartz 2in1 recipe mixes in the future? If so, why? If not, why not? I wouldn't buy this packet again.

Overall, would you say you loved the 2in1 recipe mix, you liked it or you hated it? Hated it, both components tasted weak.

Which 2in1 recipe mix did you try? Chicken Pasta + cheesy crumb topping

  • How would you rate this recipe mix out of 5? 4
-What did you/your DCs think of the overall flavour of the product? Surprisingly nice! DS, DH & I all thought it was really nice for a packet meal, although pasta bake is a firm favourite here. DH was a real fan of the topping.

How easy, or difficult, did you find the 2in1 mix to use? Easy enough, but no more easier than preparing the meal without the packet mix.

Did you follow the recipe on the back of the packet or did you add/take away any other ingredients? Added more pasta.

Would you say the 2in1 recipe mix made your mealtimes easier at all? If so, why? If not, why not? No, it took slightly longer/more faff to make this than it would've if I'd made this meal from scratch.

  • Do you think you will buy, or look to buy, Schwartz 2in1 recipe mixes in the future? If so, why? If not, why not? I might be tempted to try this one again as everyone liked it so much...but having tested 4 of the packets so far, most haven't been great so I think it would have to be when they're on offer or I didn't have enough in to cook from scratch.

  • What did you/your DCs think of the overall flavour of the product? We thought the roast potatoes were great. But the flavouring on the chicken didn't seem to flavour much of the meat, mainly the skin.

emily80 · 01/07/2013 14:45

I made the garlic and thyme roast chicken with crispy roast potatoes when we had friends round the other day and it went down really well. I used individual chicken breast fillets instead of a whole roast chicken as I had them in my freezer, and both adults and children really enjoyed them, actually I was surprised both 4 year olds ate all their chicken as I thought at least one would turn their nose up at it being different to usual! The potatoes were lovely, they had so much more flavour than usual, and again, everyone enjoyed them even the children.

I'd give this 4/5 as everyone really enjoyed it, and it made a nice change, although it was a bit fiddley and took more time than I was expecting. If you were doing a roast anyway though this wouldn't take too much longer than normal. I don't think it made my mealtime easier, but it did make it tastier. I'd be really interested in just getting the potato mix to use in future, maybe in a larger quantity so you could use it several times, just sprinkle out as much as you need and reseal it.

Was very easy to make and always have the extra ingredients in house. - Do you think you will buy, or look to buy, Schwartz 2in1 recipe mixes in the future? If so, why? If not, why not? Would buy again as was very tasty but would need double the amount if feeding a family of four!

  • Which 2in1 recipe mix did you try?
Chicken Tikka + mint & cucumber raita
  • How would you rate this recipe mix out of 5 (1 being lowest and 5 highest)
4/5
  • What did you/your DCs think of the overall flavour of the product?
I quite liked the flavour but it was too spicy for my DD (2yo) and my DH wasn't a fan either.
  • How easy, or difficult, did you find the 2in1 mix to use?
It was fairly easy to prepare and make, though it required more forethought and preparation than the other mixes I have tried.
  • Did you follow the recipe on the back of the packet or did you add/take away any other ingredients?
Followed the recipe
  • Would you say the 2in1 recipe mix made your mealtimes easier at all? If so, why? If not, why not?
Not really easier. I made it for lunch and had to be more prepared in the morning in order to have it marinading. Also more ingredients in the dip was more time consuming. If I had made it for dinner it would have been about the same amount of preparation.
  • Do you think you will buy, or look to buy, Schwartz 2in1 recipe mixes in the future? If so, why? If not, why not?
I probably wouldn't buy this one. It was a lot of work for something only I will eat. Also most of the extra ingredients are not ones I routinely buy so it's not a mix I can just keep in the cupboard and whip up quickly if needed.

I liked it.

4 stars from us, DC's really enjoyed this one, they helped prepare it and wolfed it down.

  • What did you/your DCs think of the overall flavour of the product?

They really enjoyed it, especially the crispy topping.

  • How easy, or difficult, did you find the 2in1 mix to use?

It was really easy although it's a bit of a faff having to cook the pasta first unlike some other pasta bakes on the market.

  • Did you follow the recipe on the back of the packet or did you add/take away any other ingredients?

We did the suggestion of using Tuna instead of chicken, we had moved house that day and it was a store cupboard dinner. :)

  • Would you say the 2in1 recipe mix made your mealtimes easier at all? If so, why? If not, why not?

I wouldn't say it made it easier, as such, some pasta bakes it is just a case of adding sauce to dry pasta then adding water and bunging it in the oven.

  • Do you think you will buy, or look to buy, Schwartz 2in1 recipe mixes in the future? If so, why? If not, why not?

I will because the children enjoyed it.

Loved this one!

No pictures from me I'm afraid, one box went missing in transit of moving and the camera was in there! Plus it all got wolfed down pretty quickly.
